Fighting Racism in the U.S. Military: Dismantling the United States Africa Command

Abstract This article reviews the teaching of international relations in relation to the deployment of racist tropes to understand the current war on terror. It elaborates on how the justification for the U.S. Africa Command changed over time from fighting terror to confronting Russia and China in the big power game. The paper argues that the rift in the U.S. military since the January 6, 2021 insurrection is only one manifestation of the coalescing of forces of conservatism who are opposed to the restructuring of the international political economy. The emergence of military forces in West Africa opposed to the U.S. has brought about a discussion about the U.S.A. being pushed to the margins in Africa. This racial project has created global chaos, and the task of scholars dedicated to peace is to push for the dismantling of the U.S. Africa Command as one component of the global anti racist project.

“The Brunt of the Colonial Yoke Continues to Weigh on Us”: Understanding Africa’s Geopolitics as a Decolonial Struggle

ABSTRACT The escalation of tensions in the global political arena is hardly a recent development. Presently, there’s a notable shift toward acknowledging the enduring impact of historical traumas such as slavery, World Wars, and colonialism on humans and nations. Colonialism dealt a significant blow to Africa, with the effects manifesting as trauma. Despite its colonial tragedy, a substantial body of literature recognizes the increasing agency of Africa. Thus, this study examines Africa’s evolving economic, political, and security tensions in light of its colonial history. It applies Postcolonial Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as theoretical and analytical lenses to examine the speeches of twelve (12) African leaders who participated in the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit. I explore the pattern of issues discussed by these leaders in terms of their indicative nature of postcolonial trauma and examine how the speeches demonstrate Africa’s agency within the international political landscape. The findings reveal that African leaders tie their current political, economic, and security situations in their country to the remnants of colonialism and imperialism. Fueled with resentments, these leaders are more inclined to distrust the West but maintain trust in Russia and its “strategic” partnership. Therefore, in asserting to their agency, the analysis indicates a shift toward Africa’s interdependency and desired participation in big power politics with “sincere” support from Russia. This study highlights a significant trend in Africa’s geopolitical landscape, examining how colonialism has shaped the region’s political dynamics and impacted its diplomatic aspirations in today’s multipolar world.

Understanding the Decline of the US Dollar: Key Factors and Implications

This paper mainly focuses on the declining dominance of US dollar especially in the recent century and the role of different factors in this phenomenon. Recently decline is seen in the power of US dollar. The global dollar reserves faced so much pressure in recent times. Within two decades a sharp decline is seen in US dollar share of global currency reserves. This paper starts with the review on the factors that are causing the decline of US dollar. Many internal and external factors are causing this decline in dollar’s hegemony. These factors include external factors like de-dollarization, rise of other currencies like renminbi, euro, rise of China as a global power, rise of digital currencies, geopolitical risks, US sanctions on the Russia etc. and many internal factors like monetary policy given by US central bank, rising prices or inflation, demand for currency, economic growth, export prices, increasing federal debt etc. Countries mainly BRICS countries are moving towards de dollarization by proceeding their trade in their local currencies or currencies other than dollar, similarly rise of China as a big economic power also fastening this process as China increasing the scope of its renminbi, digital currencies also replacing paper currency effecting dollar’s hegemony, US sanctions on countries like Russia, Iran etc. also forcing states to move towards other banking systems. Likewise, US internal factors like inflation is on 40 years peak and federal debt rise up to 110% of GDP, economic growth is declining. These internal and external factors speeding up this process. As major world trade is still happening in dollar so decline in its dominance has a major impact on the global financial system. So, to study about its declining phenomenon is very important and this research mainly analyze on this declining trend of US dollar. The paper also looked at the short history of dollar that how it became the paper currency and how it emerged as main currency of the world. Liberalization of Electricity Sales Side for Electricity Market-Oriented Transaction Mode

The market-oriented reform of the energy sales side is currently having a considerable impact, and in the economically developed regions, the electricity sales industry has evolved a competitive trend. Background: Despite the ongoing efforts to digitalize the healthcare sector in developing countries, the full adoption of big data analytics in healthcare settings is yet to be attained Exploring opportunities and challenges encountered is essential for designing and implementing effective interventional strategies. Objective: Exploring opportunities and challenges towards integrating big data analytics technologies in the healthcare industry in developing countries. Methodology: This was a narrative review study design. A literature search on different databases was conducted including PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Articles with predetermined keywords and written in English were included. Results: Big data analytics finds its application in population health management and clinical decision-support systems even in developing countries. The major challenges towards the integration of big data analytics in the healthcare sector in developing countries include fragmentation of healthcare data and lack of interoperability, data security, privacy and confidentiality concerns, limited resources and inadequate regulatory and policy frameworks for governing big data analytics technologies and limited reliable power and internet infrastructures. Conclusion: Digitalization of healthcare delivery in developing countries faces several significant challenges. However, the integration of big data analytics can potentially open new avenues for enhancing healthcare delivery with cost-effective benefits.

Voltage Regulation through Wide Area Voltage Control of HV/MV Transformers and Inverters’ Reactive Power Support

This paper presents a technical evaluation of two different methods to avoid the excessive voltage deviations caused by dispersed generation in distribution grids. Two voltage regulation methods, wide area voltage control of HV/MV transformer and inverters’ reactive power support, are simulated in several real rural grids with different topologies located in Northern Germany. In all these analysed grids the high penetration of dispersed generation produces big power flow reversals during low load periods. The objective of implementing both voltage regulation methods is to reduce voltage deviations in such an extent that voltage band violations no longer act as the principal obstacle to host more dispersed generation in the distribution grid. We evaluate the effectiveness of these two methods through a power system analysis program and analyse the reciprocal effects caused by simultaneous use of both methods. Moreover, the concept of “voltage inhomogeneity” is introduced.

ESKOM and the problems of South African energy

For a long period, the industrial development of South Africa has been stimulated by cheap and abundant electricity supply through a unified energy system created in 1969–1973 by ESKOM (until 1987 ESCOM), founded in 1923 as an Electricity Supply Commission, a state-owned enterprise. Until early 2000, Eskom was considered one of the most advanced and efficient energy utilities of the world. During the last two decades it is in deep crisis and actually turned bankrupt, being drained by corruption, mismanagement and technological decay. Eskom has been confronted with escalating plant breakdowns and critically tight reserve margins, to the extent that reliable electricity supply of the economy has been blocked. The troubled utility failed to meet demand, resulting in South Africa’s numerous crippling blackouts between 2007 and 2023. Eskom has also been unsuccessfully struggling to service its massive debt – over $30 billion, largely due to massive theft and corruption. Accordingly, a bibliographic review was conducted to better understand the Brazilian energetic scenario. Brazil accounts for the biggest biodiversity on the planet, as well as for having great climatic variety, such as equatorial, tropical and altitude tropical, sub-tropical, semiarid and Atlantic tropical climate. Brazilian power supply is in the hands of big power plants, like hydroelectric, thermo-electric, wind and solar plants. Hydroelectric plants correspond to approximately 59% of the country’s total installed capacity; moreover, it is often presented as clean and renewable energy source. Optimal power flow with distributed energy sources using whale optimization algorithm

<span lang="EN-US">Renewable energy generation is increasingly attractive since it is <br /> non-polluting and viable. Recently, the technical and economic performance of power system networks has been enhanced by integrating renewable energy sources (RES). This work focuses on the size of solar and wind production by replacing the thermal generation to decrease cost and losses on a big electrical power system. The Weibull and Lognormal probability density functions are used to calculate the deliverable power of wind and solar energy, to be integrated into the power system. Due to the uncertain and intermittent conditions of these sources, their integration complicates the optimal power flow problem. This paper proposes an optimal power flow (OPF) using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), to solve for the stochastic wind and solar power integrated power system. In this paper, the ideal capacity of RES along with thermal generators has been determined by considering total generation cost as an objective function. The proposed methodology is tested on the IEEE-30 system to ensure its usefulness. Obtained results show the effectiveness of WOA when compared with other algorithms like non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), grey wolf optimization (GWO) and particle swarm optimization-GWO (PSO-GWO).</span>

Modeling the power system resilience in China under different natural disasters

A good understanding of the power system resilience is necessary for optimizing the investment strategies and supporting the emergency rescue, but the existing quantitative estimation results based on real outage events are still lacked due to the data limitations. Therefore, this study first establishes a unified framework to measure the power system resilience under different natural disasters, by integrating the electricity performance curve with the dynamic inoperability input-output model. Then, a database of 285 Chinese historical big power outage events caused by natural disasters is established, and the city-level power system resilience values are estimated. Finally, a benefit analysis is conducted for improving the power system resilience. Our major findings are that: (1) Electricity system recoveries quickest from hail (23.05 h), while restores slowest from snowstorm (117.31 h). (2) China's city electricity system is the most resilient to the thunderstorm, while is the least resilient to the earthquake. (3) Enhancing the power system resilience will significantly reduce the requirements for rescue resources, and the saved emergency rescue cost ranges from 0.57 million yuan to 12.08 million yuan with 1% reduction of initial inoperability.

Modeling the local geography of country music concerts in U.S. urban areas: insights from big data analysis of live music events

Music cities leverage live music as a tool for urban revitalization. Identifying influential industries in U.S. urban areas that have shaped the country music landscape can provide valuable insights into the role of the music industry in urban development. The ‘big data’ of country music concerts obtained from Spotify were examined to discern the relative importance of food and transportation services in explaining the spatial distribution of country music concerts from 2009 to 2019. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analyses show that both food and transportation services have a positive relationship with country music concerts. The analysis also reveals that the majority of country music concerts occurred in urbanized areas. Although country music has successfully spread throughout the entire country, there are distinctive regional clusters in large cities such as Nashville, Dallas, New York City, and Austin. The result also indicates the strength of GWR in improving and sustaining the explanatory power of models. The GWR was implemented to execute four models separately considering different explanatory variables and a comparative analysis of the model performance then suggested that food service appears to perform best, whilst bus service performs better than train service and air service. These findings highlight the roles of food and transportation service facilities that have made country music — a form of Southern culture visible in the urban landscape. This study encourages music cities to harness the potential of big data's power to foster vibrant industrial ecosystems in urban environments.

New Media in Global Politics: the Role of Media in the Image Construction of African Region

New media is one of the rapid development of technology that makes the exchange of information happen more quickly. Communication patterns in this information technology era are convergent. This is due to the current technological capabilities that enable existing information to be disseminated widely and swiftly. The convergence characteristics of this information technology era lead to the transformation of conventional media into new digital forms. The massive amount of information that can be disseminated through the media makes it one of the big power holders to shape an image. The greater the influence in new media, the greater the tendency for the information to be known and understood. The dissemination of information using digital media is practiced by the African Region to construct its own image for the purpose of changing the international public's view of the region. In this study, a qualitative method with a case study approach is implemented. The research findings revealed that the African Region has utilized digital diplomacy, public diplomacy and the concept of multi-track diplomacy to improve its image. However, there is a need for a better coordination from governments in African countries to develop a positive image.
