“AH, A PROGRAM FOR FORMER CAREGIVERS. WHAT A GREAT IDEA! WHY DON’T YOU START SOMETHING?”

Abstract Sheryl Fairbanks and Warren Wolfe had insight into the experiences of bereaved dementia caregivers, having cared for four parents, two of whom had dementia, who all died within 14 months of each other after 12 years of care. After taking some time to grieve and settling an entire generation’s estates, Ms. Fairbanks and Mr. Wolfe sought resources to help them re-engage in life following caregiving. Here they were uniquely qualified to find what resources might exist. Mr. Wolfe had been a newspaper reporter and editor for four decades. Two of these decades were spent covering aging and in 2010 he was a member of the GSA Journalists in Aging Fellows Program. Likewise, Ms. Fairbanks attended GSA in 2015 as a journalist and editor as they contacted experts across the country seeking resources for bereaved dementia caregivers. While many sympathized with the need for such resources, few could be found, and it was suggested that maybe Mr. Wolfe and Ms. Fairbanks ought to create a group to help bereaved dementia caregivers figure out what was next after caregiving. In 2016 they created the Former Dementia Caregiver Re-Entry Initiative, which has helped more than 60 members figure out the next steps for themselves, re-engaging with life after caregiving. They have talked about hundreds of topics, laughed a lot, cried at times, disclosed deep fears, shared small and big discoveries about themselves, and generally have found a firmer footing as they have embarked on this new journey.

Searches for continuous gravitational waves from neutron stars: A twenty-year retrospective

Seven years after the first direct detection of gravitational waves, from the collision of two black holes, the field of gravitational wave astronomy is firmly established. A first detection of continuous gravitational waves from rapidly-spinning neutron stars could be the field’s next big discovery. I review the last twenty years of efforts to detect continuous gravitational waves using the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors. I summarise the model of a continuous gravitational wave signal, the challenges to finding such signals in noisy data, and the data analysis algorithms that have been developed to address those challenges. I present a quantitative analysis of 297 continuous wave searches from 80 papers, published from 2003 to 2022, and compare their sensitivities and coverage of the signal model parameter space.

Small fish, big discoveries: zebrafish shed light on microbial biomarkers for neuro-immune-cardiovascular health.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have emerged as a powerful model to study the gut microbiome in the context of human conditions, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and immune dysfunction. Here, we highlight zebrafish as a tool to bridge the gap in knowledge in linking the gut microbiome and physiological homeostasis of cardiovascular, neural, and immune systems, both independently and as an integrated axis. Drawing on zebrafish studies to date, we discuss challenges in microbiota transplant techniques and gnotobiotic husbandry practices. We present advantages and current limitations in zebrafish microbiome research and discuss the use of zebrafish in identification of microbial enterotypes in health and disease. We also highlight the versatility of zebrafish studies to further explore the function of human conditions relevant to gut dysbiosis and reveal novel therapeutic targets.

A Critical Study on Availability of Agricultural Inputs with the Agri Input Dealers of Nagarkarnool and Wanaparthy Districts of Telangana State, India

Biggest discovery in the history of humanity was agriculture for basic livelihood of people to sustain this biggest development the quality supply of agricultural inputs to the farming community is essential because agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58% of India’s population. Gross Value Added by agriculture, forestry, and fishing was estimated at Rs. 19.48 lakh crore (US$ 276.37 billion) in FY20. Share of agriculture and allied sectors in gross value added (GVA) of India at current prices stood at 20.2 % in FY20. (Source: National Statistical Office (NSO). Seeds are critical to successful crop production and inevitably, farm productivity and profitability. Fertilizer supplies nutrients to the soil that are essential for growth. Crop protection chemicals control weed species, harmful insects and plant diseases that affect crops. Technical knowledge and Machinery enhance human labor effectiveness and increase farm productivity. Farm information helps the farmer to identify efficiencies that lead to higher productivity and profitability through achieving cost minimization and profit maximization. The study was carried out in the districts of Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy of Telangana. A total of 60 input dealers were selected from the two districts based on Simple random sampling method. majority of the input dealers deal with medium range of agricultural inputs (55.00 per cent) Input dealers are dealing with combination of agricultural inputs and also various groups of plant protection chemicals based on their chemical classification are noticed to be sold by the input dealers during the study.

Management of Patients Diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer: Comparison of Guidelines.

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological malignancy in Europe and its management involves a variety of health professionals. In recent years, big discoveries were made concerning the management of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer, particularly in the field of molecular biology and minimally invasive surgery. This requires the continuous updating of guidelines and protocols over the years. In this paper, we aim to summarize and compare common points and disparities among protocols for management of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer by leading international gynecological oncological societies. We therefore systematically report the parallel among the guidelines based on the various steps patients with endometrial cancer usually undergo. The comparison between American and European protocols revealed some relevant disparities, in particular regarding surgical staging, molecular biology application as a prognostic tool and follow up regimens. This could possibly cause differences in interpreting and applying protocols in clinical practice in small centers, leading to a lack of adherence to guidelines or even prompting a confusing mix of them.

Signing a Pact with the Devil: Hermeticism in Shakespeare’s Macbeth

The Renaissance was an enlightening period in which new ethics and world views emerged. A move from a zealous Christian creed to an interest in worldly pleasures and the cult of the self and beauty were preached. Running parallel to these big discoveries and giant progress in different spheres, Renaissance England still bore the vestige of credence in what is considered as “weird” to contemporary man as ghosts, apparitions, and witches. Magic continued to be evoked and practices of witchcraft bore its fruition back then. What is noticeable is that despite the overall ambiance of a prevailing rational mood and thirst for the palpable, Hermeticism had a strongly felt presence in the new social milieu. This paper seeks to turn an analytical eye on hermeticism that was vividly present during Shakespeare’s time through his tragedy, Macbeth. Above all, it sheds light on the evil practices that were conquering the Elizabethans despite the progressive era that the nation was witnessing.

Women in the ICT sector in Kosovo - barriers and opportunities

Information and communication technology, as a big discovery, is a tool that has affected the entire society by giving access to huge quantities of information. As a result, the ICT industry is considered an important factor for economic development in the knowledge society. Moreover, ICT has an important impact on gender equality and women empowerment. This paper shows an overview of barriers and opportunities by analysing the survey that we conducted with 105 Kosovar females respondents from the ICT industry. The findings from the survey show that women in the ICT industry in Kosovo face barriers based on gender discrimination. On the other hand, the opportunities that we generated from the survey let to know that ICT can provide the economic and social empowerment of women, and this should be a message for ICT companies, government, and society.

This article provides critical analysis of A. Yasnitsky’s project of “Cultural-Historical Gestalt Psychology.” He uses this term to describe Vygotsky’s biggest discovery and the future of Vygotsky studies. Yasnitsky discards the activity approach to studying the human mind and reduces the social nature of personality to an “aspect” that did not receive serious elaboration in Vygotsky’s works. In the present article, it is argued that the prospect of the development of cultural-historical theory consists in elaborating on Vygotsky’s project of “height / acmeist psychology.” Its subject matter is “the reverse movement from consciousness to life,” as Vygotsky put it. The purpose of height psychology is to help humans master their affects by means of concepts. This science realizes “the motion toward freedom — toward a life guided by reason.”

Science: A Sixth Sense

When we hear about science, a certain fear of formulae, complex reactions and theories comes to our mind. But have we ever thought of science as a concept beyond the textbooks? If we can understand how things work, why certain things happen the way we see them or what causes certain phenomena, science will no longer be limited to textbooks. The best way of familiarizing society to science is to first simplify it to an extent where the common man understands it not as magic but as a happening with proper reasoning. As per my opinion, science is the way of thinking how and why things happen around us. The reason gives the science behind it. Science has the power of existence. Science is not a subject to learn; it is the power of thinking. In a world where technology surpasses everything, science has still managed to find utmost importance in everyday life. Without science, technology wouldn't flourish and without technology, science would not have got the respect it deserves. I don’t know why, but we have divided science into different branches,for example physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology etc. Now they have become major subjects and have been divided into smaller branches. I think, these different branches or subjects are nothing but the various ways of thinking over the same problem. Science is all about understanding. All branches of science have made tremendous progress in giving directions to thoughts and ideas. This has ultimately led mankind to make advancements in all areas related to science. Whenever there is a new discovery or invention, it proves that we are taking science a step ahead, making it more accessible to the common man and in the course providing solutions to even the smallest of problems. If you don’t understand science, you will continuously feel that magics are happening in nature. There is nothing magical in the world of science, only our sense of power has some limits and that is why we are unable to experience or sense the waves and tiny matters. There are lots of phenomena happening in nature continuously with a reason. If we want to understand the reason behind it then we will definitely have to convert that reason into technology. Science is truly a fascinating world, where we see the tiniest inventions becoming the biggest comfort or the biggest discoveries helping mankind to leap forward without any hurdles. It is only due to the understanding of science, more importantly rocket science, that the sky is now no longer a limit. Man has also been able to give a reasonable scientific explanation to most of the so-called magical phenomena of nature. It is only because of science which is the backbone of technology, that man is able to achieve the comfort of happy living, by decoding problems while treading on the path of innovative thinking. So, every student has to learn conceptual basic science. You can understand science once you start thinking in a proper way. Every student needs to generate the habit of thinking on any problem. This will slowly decrease the fear about science. Lastly, to conclude I want to say that Science is the sixth sense for human beings so try to use it to experience the lovely and fascinating world.

Responses to the 2018 and 2019 “One Big Discovery” Question: ASTRO Membership’s Opinions on the Most Important Research Question Facing Radiation Oncology…Where Are We Headed?

At the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s (ASTRO) 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, attendees were asked for the first time “What is the most important research question that needs to be answered in the next 3 to 5 years?” This request was meant to start a dialogue, promote thoughtful discussion within our professional community, and help inform topics for ASTRO workshops and focus meetings. There were nearly 550 responses in 2017, with the top 5 as follows: immunotherapy/radiation therapy combination, genomic influences and targeted medicine, new clinical trial design, advanced imaging, and oligometastatic disease. In the subsequent years, ASTRO used these results to help guide future directions in several ways, including forming think tanks and developing workshops. Think tanks were dedicated to biomarkers and nanotechnology in radiation oncology, the promises and pitfalls of genetic testing, and genetic determinants in radiation oncology. Subsequent ASTRO research workshops deliberated on the role of the tumor microenvironment, the influence of radiation on the immune response, and treatment of oligometastatic disease, highlighting the biology, clinical trials, and advances in imaging and physics relevant to the management of oligometastatic disease.

An exploratory teaching program in big data analysis for undergraduate students

Many of the world’s biggest discoveries and decisions in science, technology, business, medicine, politics, and society as a whole, are now being made on the basis of analyzing massive datasets. In this paper, exploratory teaching program is proposed. It provides a broad and practical introduction to big data analysis. This exploratory teaching program was designed and given in Department of Computer Engineering at Kocaeli University in the spring semester of 2018–2019. To assess the educational program’s impact on the learning process and to evaluate the acceptance and satisfaction level of students, they answered a questionnaire after finishing the program. According to students’ feedback, the exploratory teaching program is useful for learning how to analyze large datasets and identify patterns that will improve any company’s and organization decision-making process.

Extraordinary developments in transplant medicine have taken place over the past 75 years, and big discoveries remain on the horizon. However, just as the United States is experiencing deep and worsening economic inequality, a distinct but similar trend is noticeable in healthcare. At the same time that some patients benefit from novel therapies and precision medicine, other patients are unable to enjoy insurance coverage for even the most basic immunosuppressive therapies.
