Comparison of Turkey's Sectoral Energy Utilization Efficiencies between 1990 and 2000, Part 2: Residential-Commercial and Transportation Sectors

Turkey's energy consumption and imports are experiencing rapid growth, as is the Turkish economy. Hence, rational and efficient utilization of energy resources is very essential. Therefore, knowledge of the Turkish energy utilization efficiencies is of paramount importance in establishing the energy policy of the country. The present study, consisting of two parts, analyzes sectoral energy utilization in Turkey over an 11-yr period from 1990 to 2000. In order to calculate sectoral energy utilization efficiency values, Turkey is subgrouped into four main sectors, namely, utility, industrial, residential-commercial and transportation. Part 1 of this study investigated the first two subsectors, while the rest is studied here. Turkey's overall first law efficiencies for the entire residential-commercial sector are found to vary from 54.19 to 57.76%, while those for the whole transportation sector are obtained to range from 20.15 to 23.88%, with average values of 56.21 and 21.70% for 11 years, respectively. Total energy utilization efficiencies are calculated to vary from 43.24 to 45.81%, with an average value of 44.66% for the same years. It is anticipated that the results obtained can assist national government for future planning studies. However, a good energy management system should be installed throughout the country for the optimum use of these resources.

Design, manufacture, and test of lightweight composite sandwich helmets

This paper summarises work undertaken on the design, manufacturing development, and impact testing of a lightweight composite aircrew helmet. Full details are given on the double diaphragm forming process, developed at DERA, which has been extensively used to manufacture the complex, doubly curved layers that form the final helmet assembly. Manufacturing options for the development of a ‘form fitting’ foam liner are also included, as are developments in the foam liner press moulding processes.Results from an extensive impact test programme conducted on fully assembled shell samples are provided, illustrating good energy management during test. Some redundant material was apparent from the results, hence further mass reduction is possible. Modification of the layer deformation sequence is also required. However the sandwich shells met all impact test requirements. Correlation of the impact test data and helmet damage cross- sections has allowed recommendations to be made regarding improved design and manufacture of the layered construction. Predictions based on these improvements show the final helmet mass should be ∼750 g, excluding breathing systems and communications.

Research information: Regional architecture as a model towards sustainability

Yoshio Kato discusses the idea of village life as a model for sustainability based on better management of energy and entropy including reduced consumption, recycling and self-sufficiency. A recent house design in Japan by Kato incorporating these ideas is presented, along with questions of lifestyle and consumption that architects, their clients and others will have to consider in the transition toward sustainable design.

Linking energy efficiency into company objectives

This article argues that, even in cases where energy represents only a small percentage of costs, improvements in efficiency can nevertheless make a significant impact on business performance. Good energy management can be readily achieved by linking it into existing company activities and so improvements are not difficult to make.

A microcomputer-based energy monitoring program for industry: emopin

This paper introduces a microcomputer-based energy monitoring program for industry ( EMOPIN). The essential information of energy consumption in industrial plants is discussed and analyzed. When running the program, the energy consumption data, the production output data, and other information are recorded into a data base, processed into useful and meaningful indicators, and reported to the plant's energy managers or engineers. Where appropriate, suggestions are provided by the computer to assist in the identification of the source of any energy consumption abnormality. The EMOPIN program is written in TURBO PASCAL on PC machines. It is user-friendly and easy to install and use by inexperienced users. The application results of the program are satisfactory. It shows that microcomputers may assist plant managers or engineers greatly for good energy management in industry.
