QUENCHING EFFECT OF OXIMES ON THE PHOTOLYSIS OF COPOLYMER OF STYRENE AND PHENYL VINYL KETONE

Abstract In order to estimate the function of oximes as quenchers, their effect on the photolysis of copolymer of styrene and phenyl vinyl ketone was investigated in solution and in the solid phase. 2-Acetonaphthone oxime and benzylidene acetone oxime among the oximes examined in this paper were as effective as naphthalene, which is a well known quencher.

Complexes of methyl vinyl ketone, benzylidene acetone and cyclohexenone were synthesized by photochemical substitution of one carbonyl group of cyclopentadienyl- and methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl. Only the olefinic double bond is coordinated to the metal.

The role of the S-conformation of?-phenylvinyl ketones in their polymerization according to the michael reaction

It was shown by the methods of IR and UV spectroscopy that the molecules of benzalacetone (BAC) and α-benzalmethyl ethyl ketone (α-BMEK) are labile and can exist in S-cis- and S-trans-conformations, while γ-benzalmethyl ethyl ketone (γ-BMEK) exists primarily in an S-trans-conformation. 2. The possibility of the existence of BAC andα-BMEK molecules in S-cis-conformation is responsible for their greater ability for polymerization according to the Michael reaction in comparison with γ-BMEK. 3. Some considerations were expressed on the possible mechanism of the polymerization.

The reduction of unsaturated ketones

Abstract Adequate details for the preparation of a number of unsaturated ketones (including substituted benzylidene acetophenones) are described. Reduction of these unsaturated ketones by various chemical agencies has been studied. Conversion to saturated ketones is effected by sodium amalgam in acetic acid. This method of obtaining such compounds is particularly useful since the necessary unsaturated ketones are derived in good yield by condensation of simple aldehydes and ketones. Diketone secondary products in this mode of reduction are now shown to arise only at elevated temperatures. The presence of chloro or nitro substituent inhibits reduction. Generalisations made by Harries on the sodium amalgam reduction are criticised. The Clemmensen reduction applies smoothly to benzylidene acetone yielding n‐propyl benzene.
