Refractive Index and Dispersion of the Benzene-Carbon Tetrachloride System

The refractive indices of the benzene-carbon tetrachloride system have been measured at seven different wavelengths in the visible region. These indices show only slight departure from linearity in the mole fraction. The molar refractions, calculated according to the Lorentz-Lorenz equation, are not additive in the mole fraction. Moreover, no simple relation between the molar refractions and the frequency of the light source is obtained.

Refractive Index and Dispersion of the Benzene-Methanol System

The refractive indices of the benzene—methanol system have been measured at 25° at seven wavelengths in the visible region. The electronic polarizability of benzene, methanol, and carbon tetrachloride have been calculated from the refractive indices of this system and those of the benzene-carbon tetrachloride system by use of the Böttcher equation. The data are then used to calculate the molar electronic polarizations of the carbon tetrachloride-methanol system which are found to be in good agreement with experimentally determined values. These results show that, within the experimental error, the electronic polarizabilities of the three components are independent of the composition and hence of the environment. The electronic polarizabilities of the three substances are found to follow a dispersion equation with only one term.

Sound Velocities in Binary Liquid Mixtures

AbstractThe velocity of sound in five binary liquid mixtures of Toluene–Carbon tetrachloride, Benzene–Hexane, Cyclo hexane–Carbon tetrachloride, Hexane‐Toluene and Benzene–Carbon tetrachloride at various concentrations has been measured by the Debye Sear's diffraction method. It is found that the velocity and compressibility vary approximately linearly with concentration. Comparison between experimental and theoretical results shows fairly good agreement between them.

Interaction between Sulfur Dioxide and Polar Molecules. I. Systems Containing Aliphatic Alcohols, Ethers, or Benzene in Carbon Tetrachloride

The absorption band of sulfur dioxide near 2800 A in mixed solvents of benzene, aliphatic alcohols, or ethers with carbon tetrachloride is probably in part the result of a donor-acceptor complex with sulfur dioxide as acceptor. The characteristic constants for the MeOH, EtOH, n-PrOH, n-BuOH, and benzene complexes with sulfur dioxide, and the heats of formation of the benzene and ethanol complexes with sulfur dioxide in carbon tetrachloride have been estimated. The effect of atmospheric water vapor on these systems is also discussed.

The quaternary system: benzene—carbon tetrachloride—acetic acid—water at 25°C

Apparatus is described for the accurate determination of liquid — liquid equilibrium in ternary and quaternary systems by the synthetic method; and in particular, a microburette for use in cloud point titrations, and a flask which enables the weights of the equilibrium phases to be determined directly. Tie lines may then be located by the “lever rule,” more accurately and conveniently than in the method of O thmer, W hite and T rueger [14]. Results are presented for the system benzene — carbon tetrachloride — acetic acid — water at 25°C, and relationships between the equilibrium concentrations in the quaternary and the ternary systems are discussed.

XCIII. The magnetic double refraction of liquid mixtures

Abstract The theories for non-polar substances, and the previous experimental studies of the magnetic double refraction of liquid mixtures are reviewed. Measurements are given for benzene in the following solvents: carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexane, pentane, hexane, heptane, and dodecane. The value of the Cotton-Mouton constant of dodecane is given for the first time, C m =-2·81 × 10-14, and compared with the values for other paraffins. The results are discussed in relation to the theories of Snellman and Ramanadham. Complete agreement is found with Ramanadham's theory for the simple case of benzene in carbon tetrachloride. The values also support Snellman's theory, but more data are required for a closer check, especially values for vapours.
