Quality of parenting and juvenile delinquency

The increase in the number of juvenile delinquents in Nigeria especially Benin Metropolis can be dangerous for the future of adolescents. One of the factors causing this as inferred in this study is parents. This study therefore aims to determine the relationship between Quality of Parenting and Juvenile Delinquency. The design of this study was descriptive. Analysis of the study was carried out using the Chi-square test. The number of samples in this study was 123 juvenile delinquents and 5 officials at the Children Correctional Center, Benin City. The study adopted the total number of population as its sample which is 123 juvenile delinquents thus no sample technique was used. While the 5 officials were purposively selected out of 7 officials. The dependent variable was juvenile delinquency. The parameters for measuring Quality of Parenting were parenting styles, parents’-child communication, family structure and parents’ socio-economic status. The two parameters were significantly related to juvenile delinquency especially parenting styles and family structure. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between Quality of Parenting and Juvenile Delinquency.

Determinants of willingness and level of COVID-19 vaccination uptake among intra-city transporters in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria

The COVID-19 pandemic was a litmus test for the epidemic preparedness and response mechanism of health systems. Road Transporters constitute a large at-risk group for spread and morbidity related to the disease. This study assessed determinants of willingness and level of COVID-19 vaccination uptake among intra-city road transporters in the Benin City Metropolis of Edo State Nigeria. An analytic cross-sectional design was utilized for this study using 389 structured questionnaires distributed among intra-city drivers selected via a multi-stage sampling technique across bus parks in Benin City metropolis. The mean age of respondents studied was 38.7 ± 9.3 years. Less than one-tenth 30 (7.7%) of respondents had taken the COVID-19 vaccine. Willingness to take COVID-19 vaccine was a significant determinant of uptake of COVID-19 vaccine (OR = 8.082; 95% Cl = 2.208 – 29.584; p = 0.002). There is need to initiate appropriate health promotional interventions to address vaccine hesitancy for improve vaccination uptake.

Evaluation of Equivalent Noise Levels across Some Commercial Areas of Warri and Benin Metropolis in Nigeria

Globalisation has given rise to an increase in the amount of noise generated around us, such that man has adjusted to this increment without considering the possible risks associated with it. This study aims to measure the equivalent noise level in eighteen (18) locations in some commercial areas of Warri and Benin Metropolis in Nigeria using a noise level metre (Model: CEL-231). The assessment was done twice daily, during the day and at night. The results obtained revealed that the daytime equivalent noise level of both cities ranged from 48–68, 78–102 dBA for minimum and maximum noise levels, while the nighttime equivalent noise level ranged from 39–59, 59–83 dBA for minimum and maximum levels, respectively. It was observed that the daytime noise level values in some locations for both cities were higher than the nighttime values and also higher than the recommended standard noise quality description for daytime and nighttime duration as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and some existing literature in Nigeria and across the globe. The reason for this noise level elevation is due to the activities of automobiles and tricycles plying the road incessantly, and again, these are major industrial cities with a lot of activities during the daytime. However, it can be recommended that those whose daily activities confine them to areas with unhealthy noise levels ensure at least 10 hours of recovery time in areas where the sound level is less than 65 dBA and also encourage the planting of trees in this vicinity

Economic Analysis of Waterleaf and Fluted Pumpkin Production in Benin Metropolis, Edo state, Nigeria

Vegetable farming operations range from small patches of crops, producing a few vegetables for family use or marketing, to the great highly organized and mechanized farms common in industrialized countries. In parts of Nigeria, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin farming are very important. This study evaluates the economic analysis of waterleaf and fluted pumpkin farming in Benin Metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria using well-structured questionnaire. Data obtained revealed mean age of 52 years and 53 years both waterleaf and fluted pumpkin farmers with female having a simple majority of 74.36% and 84.31% for both groups. The result also revealed a fairly equal moderate level of education with majority 56.41% and 58.82% of waterleaf and fluted pumpkin farmers attaining primary school education respectively. The mean farming experience was 6 years for both groups. Furthermore, the study revealed that fluted pumpkin enterprises was more profitable than water leaf, with a net profit of $177.0473 and $324.4252 for waterleaf and fluted pumpkin enterprise respectively. The family labour cost was the only significant factors affecting water leaf production at 5% level probability whilst pesticide cost and size of plot were the two significant factors affecting fluted pumpkin production. It was recommended for farmer of fluted pumpkin enterprise to improvised organic pesticide which will help reduce cost and as well increase their land holding for maximum and profit.

Advanced metallothionein profile in children with malaria infection

Background: Malaria is a leading cause of death in sub-Sahara Africa including Nigeria. The oxidative stress associated with malaria infection may affect the plasma protective proteins and trace elements which participate in the antioxidant defensive system. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the Advanced Metallothionein Profile (AMP) of malaria infected children in Benin metropolis and determine its association with parasite density. Methods: This case-control study had a total of 350 children between 6 months and 11 years with two hundred malaria positive children as case and 150 malaria negative children as control. Socio-demographic data was obtained through a semi-structured questionnaire. Blood samples were taken from participants to determine malaria parasite density using thick film microscopy. Serum Metallothionein (MT), Glutathione (GSH) and Ceruloplasmin (CP) were analyzed using Enzyme linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques, while copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) levels were determined using Atomic Absorption spectrometry (AAS). The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools.

UV Spectrophotometric Quantification of Sudan-IV Dye in Palm Oil from Major Markets of Benin Metropolis

The deficit in the supply of palm oil in Nigeria over the years has been met in part through smuggling of the product from different sources into the Nigerian market by marketers of which some of the products have been reported to be adulterated with azo dyes. The aim of this study was to detect and quantify sudan dyes in adulterated palm oil from the open market using simple and inexpensive procedures such as analytical thin layer chromatography (TLC) and Ultra violet spectrophotometric methods respectively. Seven palm oil samples from the open markets within Benin metropolis labelled as (AUC, AUC2, IK1, IK5, OLK1, ADIT, and OB) were screened for the presence of Sudan-III and Sudan-IV dyes. Four of the samples (IK1, IK5, OLK1, ADIT) were confirmed to contain Sudan-IV dye with quantities of 22.5mg/L, 21.7mg/L, 29.5mg/L, 23.8mg/L respectively. This experiment shows that the use of easy and cheap methods such as TLC and UV-spectrophotometry can be used to detect and quantify Sudan dyes in adulterated palm oil.

Reproductive and sexual health implications of illegal migration among young adults in Benin Metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria.

Reproductive and sexual health implications of illegal migration among young adults encompass a range of complex and interconnected challenges that demand attention and comprehensive solutions. This study is aimed at determining the reproductive and sexual health implications of illegal migration among young adults in Benin metropolis. Analytical cross-sectional study design was adopted. A purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample size of three hundred and forty-four participants. A one-time-survey method was adopted for the study as the questionnaire was administered on a face-to-face basis. Simple frequencies, percentage, charts, and graph were used to analyze the data, with the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 22. The results showed that majority of the respondents were sexually abused which resulted in unwanted pregnancies, when travelling through an illegal route. Majority of irregular migrants were doing so for socio-economic reasons in search of greener pastures. It was concluded that most of the respondents were faced by unethical challenges while travelling through the route like sexual harassment and robbery.. Most returnees are likely to contact STD/STIs including HIV/AIDs, as well as engage in abortion especially among the young adults, which may have some adverse effects on their reproductive and sexual health later in the future. It is recommended that there is a need to enlighten the young adults who want to migrate illegally on the implication of the illegal migration on their reproductive and sexual health. Campaigns against illegal migration/trafficking should be conducted regularly, stressing the negative effects such as the risks to which victims are exposed along the routes.

An Assessment of Stress Management Skills and Teachers’ Performance in Public Secondary Schools in Benin Metropolis

The study aimed to determine the level of stress management skills and teachers’ performance in public secondary schools in the Benin metropolis. The dimensions of stress studied included physical stress, mental stress, emotional stress and social stress. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey design using a sample of 171 teachers and school administrators randomly drawn from six secondary schools in Benin City, Edo State Nigeria. The secondary schools were selected from the three local government areas that make up Benin City (Egor, Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha). Using a convenient sampling technique, a self-developed instrument titled: Stress Management Skills and Teachers’ Performance (SMSTP) was used to collect data for the study. The data were analysed using simple percentages. Underpinned by the psychological stress theory of Lazarus, the results showed that public secondary school teachers had a high level of stress and that there are no proper stress management techniques for them in the Benin metropolis. The findings equally revealed that stress has a direct relationship with teachers’ productivity that invariably affects students’ academic performance. Consequently, the study recommended that the same attention given to stress management by corporate organizations which are on the increase should be extended to the education industry.

ANALYSIS OF THE APPLICATION OF FORENSIC TOOLS IN CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION IN NIGERIA; A CASE STUDY OF BENIN METROPOLIS.

Abstract Crime scene investigation is a significant and vital stage in criminal investigation. The process is a very long and tedious exercise that involves meticulous documentation of the crime scene leading to collection and recovery of evidence in order to deduce the events of a crime. Doing this, requires the application of some scientific or forensic tools which enables the prosecution to produce credible evidence with which to get justice for the victim. Objectives; This study was therefore conducted to investigate the application of forensic tools in crime scene investigation in Nigerian using Benin City as a case study. Method; In the study, investigators of the various investigative units in Edo State Criminal Investigations Department in Benin City within the three local government areas that make up Benin metropolis was the study population. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire and key informant interview from senior serving and retired police officers. 110 respondents were initially drawn as the sample for the study, however, only 98 results were received and were used for the final sample. Using an interview schedule and statistical analysis technique, the data were critically analyzed. Results; Results from the study showed non usage of any form of forensic evidence in the various investigations carried out by the Police. Challenges, such as poor training, inadequate funding and interference from diverse quarters contribute to limit the effective use of forensic investigation in the conduct of criminal investigations. Conclusion; The Police being the chief execution arm of government and by implication other law enforcement agencies, the legal community and the Nigerian public are yet to fully grasp the nucleus or important roles of forensics science in crime investigation. On this premise, it was recommended that specialized forensic units be established for criminal investigations which should be adequately funded.

Application of Generalizability Theory in Measurement Error in 2019 WAEC Mathematics Objective Examination in Benin Metropolis

This study investigated measurement error in 2019 WAEC senior secondary school examination using generalizability theory. The study was specifically concerned with identifying and analyzing measurement error in the senior secondary school 2019 WAEC mathematics objective examination using generalizability theory, and also to determine the highest contribution of facets: students, items and teachers to measurement error. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The study was survey which adopted a random effect two-facet fully crossed <i>s×t×i</i> design for a generalizability (G) and decision (D) studies. The population consisted of fifty-six thousand, seven hundred and ninety-seven (5697) senior secondary three (SS3) students in the seventy-five (75) public secondary schools in Benin metropolis for the 2019/2020 academic session. The instrument for data collection was a fifty (50) multiple choice WAEC, mathematics 2019 examination. The instrument has been validated by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The reliability of the items was ascertained using the Kuder – Richardson 20 (KR 20) to obtain internal consistency. It gave a value of 0.92. Data collected were analyzed using a software EduG version 6.0-e based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) and generalizability. The findings which emerged from the study were: the highest contribution to measurement error in examination scores was the students - teacher interaction which accounted for 68.9%, this was followed by the student factor (27.5%) and the residual, that is, interaction of student, teachers and items (3.6%). A generalizability coefficient of 0.97 high enough to rank order students according to their relative abilities in examinations was obtained when the number of teachers was increased to 78. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended that generalizability analysis should be carried out by researchers, test developers and examination bodies so as to reduce or eliminate measurement error and hence maximize reliability.

Assessment of airborne bacteria in residential buildings in Benin City, Nigeria

Exposure to bioaerosols poses significant health risks to occupants of buildings, especially in tropical areas due to its climatic characteristics that favour airborne bacterial growth. This study investigated the levels and composition of indoor and outdoor airborne bacteria in residential buildings in Benin Metropolis. Air samples were collected from forty-five randomly selected houses across the five local government areas in Benin City using the passive sampling technique. The culture-dependent 16S rRNA gene technique was utilized in theidentification of the bacterial isolates. The results revealed that the mean concentrations of the indoor and 3 3 outdoor total bacteria varied from 476.1 to 939.3 CFU/m3 and 181.1 to 373.2 CFU/m3 in the wet season, 335.0 3 3 to 457.2 CFU/m3 and 387.2 to 627.8 CFU/m3 in the dry season, respectively. The concentration of indoor and outdoor airborne bacteria varied significantly (P=0.001) during the wet and dry seasons. Basic Local Alignment Search Tool homology showed that the 16S rRNA gene sequences of isolates were related to Proteus mirabilis, Pectobacterium brasiliense, and Enterobacter sichuanensis. The bacterial communities identified are associated with humans and other outdoor environmental media and could lead to critical health outcomes among exposed vulnerable occupants of the buildings. This study, therefore, provides a database for airborne bacteria in residential houses in the study area and could assist in the implementation of effective interventions that reduce the risks and provide a safe environment.

INVESTIGATING THE PATH LOSS OF CELLULAR MOBILE NETWORK IN SUBURBAN AREAS OF BENIN METROPOLIS OF NIGERIA AT 910MHZ

This paper focuses on investigating path loss of mobile cellular network in suburban areas of Benin metropolis at a propagation frequency of 910MHz. The network Cell Info Lite application installed in GIONEE M5 CDMA was used to measure the received signal strength of the transmitted signal. The relative parameters were obtained from 100meters from the Glo base station from August, 2021 to October, 2021 within an average temperature of 270C. The results showed that Hata models are extensively used for the analysis of path loss evident in mobile cellular networks, GSM and CDMA system as depicted by the terrain of sub-urban areas of Benin City Metropolis. It was observed that the more the mobile stations move away from the base station, the higher the signal loss. This paper therefore guides cellular network service provider on accurate method of designing, deploying, and managing network to enhance good network coverage.

Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Atlantic Horse Mackerel (Trachurus Trachurus) from Cold Storage in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria

Heavy metals can contaminate fish and water which in turn present a risk to humans. The dearth of eco-toxicological data on the heavy metal content in Trachurus trachurus particularly from cold storage in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria, warranted this research, which was achieved via Atomic Absorption Spectrometric technique. The mean concentrations (mg/kg, wet weight) of heavy metals in T. trachurus by cold storage point ranged from 0.242 for Cd at Uselu to 52.98 for Zn also at Uselu with significant differences (p&lt;0.05) in the mean concentrations of heavy metals in T. trachurus between cold storage points. The total toxicity of mixtures (TTM) value for heavy metals was 0.845 while the estimated annual intake (EAI) and estimated daily intake (EDI) of heavy metals peaked for Zn with values of 1.345 mg/person/year and 0.00368 mg/person/day respectively. The target hazard quotient (THQ) values ranged from 0.0000276 (Cd) to 0.0000135 (Zn) with a total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) value of 0.0000267 while the quota for heavy metals in T. trachurus ranged from 0.36% for Cd to 87.80% for Zn. The total heavy metal burden in T. trachurus by cold storage point ranged from 46.95 mg/kg at Oliha to 54.37 mg/kg at Uselu. T. trachurus from cold storage were safe for human consumption with regard to heavy metal levels as International thresholds for heavy metals in fish were not surpassed. It was proffered that continuous monitoring of the heavy metal status of this fish species is maintained in order to protect the health of potential consumers.

IMPACT OF MARKET PATRONAGE ON THE TRAFFIC SITUATION IN BENIN METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

This paper examines the influence of market patronage on the traffic situation in Benin City, Nigeria. Nine market routes were studied, and a well-structured questionnaire administered randomly and systematically was used to collect data from 407 respondents. Descriptive and correlation techniques were used to analyse the responses. Most of the markets were found to be situated along transit routes, and operated every day, resulting in street trading and parking which contributed 76.2 percent to the traffic situation in Benin metropolis. It is suggested that traffic laws prohibiting street trading and parking be enacted and enforced. The marketplaces should be restructured to accommodate motor parks, and alternative routes to bypass market areas for non-market trips should be considered as well as the provision of priority lanes for High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV).

A 2-Year Audit Report of the Socio-Demographics and Clinical Profile of ‘One-Way’ Traffic Offenders Referred to the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Benin

Background: Wrong-way driving, sometimes referred to as ‘one-way’ driving, is a common offence, however, the role mental illness plays is unknown. This study aims to determine the socio-demographic and clinical profile, in addition to the prevalence of mental disorders, among arrested wrong-way traffic offenders in the Benin metropolis. Methods: Socio-demographic and clinical correlate data was obtained from the records of 18 one-way traffic offenders who were referred to the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria for evaluation within the last 24 months. Results: All offenders were males, with an age range of 23-63 years. None of the traffic offenders had a past psychiatric disorder, neither was there any significant finding in their mental state examination. Only three of the offenders tested positive for cannabinoids in a urine toxicology screen. Conclusion: Mental illness did not contribute remarkably to traffic offending in the sample of offenders sent for psychiatric evaluation. Rather than refer, appropriate punishment should be meted out on offenders to serve as deterrence.

City residents’ awareness and perception of covid 19 vaccination

Background of the study: With the roll out of vaccines in Edo state and the increasing number of cases of infections, it has become imperative to investigate residents’ awareness and perception of the Corona virus vaccine in order to understand the willingness and readiness of the public to accept vaccines in Benin City. Purpose: The study investigates Benin City residents’ awareness and perception of COVID19 vaccination. Method: A descriptive survey was adopted for the research. The study setting is the Benin metropolis. A sample of 400 respondents was drawn randomly from the resident population for the research from three local government areas that make up the Benin metropolis. Findings: The study found that social media is the most important source of awareness on COVID 19 vaccination, the perception of COVID 19 vaccination is poor among Benin city residents, the willingness to participate in the COVID19 vaccination is poor and factors affecting COVID19 vaccinations among Benin city residents are the systems factors of government and the healthcare system and personal doubts about vaccinations Conclusion: It is evident that the poor perception is a stumbling block to the acceptance of the COVID 19 vaccines and may derive attempts to reach herd immunity in Benin City.

Effects of Two Modes of Groups Counseling Approaches on HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing Among School-going Adolescents

Aims: The study investigated the effects of cognitive behavioral and reality group therapies in fostering human immunodeficiency virus/ voluntary counseling and testing among school-going adolescents in Benin Metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria. Method: A pre- and post-test true experimental control group design was observed. While 120 school-going adolescents from three randomly selected schools were recruited and randomly assigned to two treatments (Cognitive Behavior [37] and Reality [34] Therapies) and control [38] groups, with 11 dropout accounting for 9% alteration rate. The treatment last six weeks. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The instruments used for data collection were self-administered scales with a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.87 after an interval of three weeks. Data generated was analyzed using the inferential statistics of Analysis of Variance tested at a 0.05 level of significance. Results: The results showed that cognitive behaviour and reality therapies were significantly effective in fostering HIV/voluntary counselling and testing among school-going adolescents. That is, the two modes of group interventions improve the willingness of adolescents of these schools towards receiving counselling and performing testing for HIV. Conclusion: It was concluded that cognitive behaviour and reality therapies were found to be potent on school-going adolescents’ willingness toward HIV voluntary counselling and testing for prevention and treatment.
