Analysis and Optimization of Hybrid Soil Properties for Gel Based Roof Tiles

Our current 21st century has seen more drastic changes in terms of environmental conditions due to global warming, climate change and deforestation. This has shown a great rise in the global temperature throughout the world. Normally, the roof top of a building is provided with tiles to protect the structural components and to create a comfortable environment. The tiles can be made of materials like clay, concrete, fly ash, lime etc. Due to the prevailing environmental challenges, there is a need for the tiles to be made as with more energy efficient material that supports thermal insulation and cost effectiveness. Aerogel and hydrogel are the gel based product that are used in our current work to enhance the thermal insulation property of the tiles. Various tests such as water absorption test, wet and dry cycle test, bending strength test, thermal conductivity test, wear and tear test are carried out on the tile to quantify its characteristics. All the above shows better value than the normal commercial tile product.

Influence of accelerated aging on bending strength of particleboards

Particleboards are used in the manufacture of furniture, as well as the furnishing of structures and prefabricated homes. Their quality dictates where they can be used and how long they can last. The boards’ characteristics deteriorate as they are used. To examine the change-degradation of the properties of the boards are exposed to the effects of the external climate (rain, snow, wind, sun) or regimes of accelerated aging. For this purpose, a degradation test of the properties of wood-based panels was performed, which aims to create a model that will describe the change in bending strength of the mentioned panels. The paper presents the results of bending strength and thickness swelling tests of 16 mm thick particleboards that were exposed to accelerated aging regimes, and the basic model of property degradation.

Bending performance of cross-laminated timber-concrete composite slabs according to the composite method

Bending strength tests were conducted of cross-laminated timber (CLT)-concrete composite slabs according to the shear connection method and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) reinforcement. The bending strength of the composite slab that was shear-connected with an epoxy adhesive was 17% higher than that of a composite slab that was shear-connected with a self-tapping screw. In addition, the CLT-concrete slip of the former composite slab was also measured as 20% lower than the latter under the same load, showing a behavior close to that of a full composite. Both shear connection methods generated a failure in a low load-deformation section when there was a defect in the outermost tensile laminae of the CLT. In contrast, the CFRP reinforcement in the tension part of the composite slab suppressed the failure at the defect in the outermost tensile laminae. This reinforcement effect increased the reliability of the bending performance of the composite slab by preventing the failure of the composite slab while in a constant failure mode. Furthermore, the slip of the composite slab decreased 49% after its reinforcement with CFRP, showing a behavior close to that of a full composite.

Bending strength analysis of HDPE plastic reinforced wood waste and thermoplastic polymer to replace ceramic tile composites

Commercial products made from plastics, papers, and various other materials are always in high demand in this day and age. The waste products also increase with time accumulating becomes very high that it impacts the environment. Recycling waste products can reduce waste and improve the development of manufacturing products as the materials are readily available as waste especially plastic waste. This project research presents bending strength analysis of HDPE plastic waste reinforced wood waste and thermoplastic polymer. The waste materials of HDPE plastic waste and wood waste potential to replace ceramic tile composites. Four samples were prepared to produce ceramic tile samples at different composition ratio of HDPE plastic waste: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 weight by weight (wt/wt%) reinforced composition ratio of wood waste at 2.0 (wt/wt%) and thermoplastic polymer. It is revealed the higher bending strength test for composition ratio of 3.0 HPDE plastic waste produce 8.28 MPa with the density at 0.83 g/cm3 and a porosity value of 0.05%. The image microstructure by using Optical Microscope (OM) analysis shows the 10x magnification of matrix reinforcement bonding between HDPE plastic waste reinforced wood waste and thermoplastic polymer has a good matrix-reinforcement bonding and suitable to replace ceramic tile applications.

Characterization of Thermal Bio-Insulation Materials Based on Oil Palm Wood: The Effect of Hybridization and Particle Size.

Oil palm wood is the primary biomass waste produced from plantations, comprising up to 70% of the volume of trunks. It has been used in non-structural materials, such as plywood, lumber, and particleboard. However, one aspect has not been disclosed, namely, its use in thermal insulation materials. In this study, we investigated the thermal conductivity and the mechanical and physical properties of bio-insulation materials based on oil palm wood. The effects of hybridization and particle size on the properties of the panels were also evaluated. Oil palm wood and ramie were applied as reinforcements, and tapioca starch was applied as a bio-binder. Panels were prepared using a hot press at a temperature of 150 °C and constant pressure of 9.8 MPa. Thermal conductivity, bending strength, water absorption, dimensional stability, and thermogravimetric tests were performed to evaluate the properties of the panels. The results show that hybridization and particle size significantly affected the properties of the panels. The density and thermal conductivity of the panels were in the ranges of 0.66–0.79 g/cm3 and 0.067–0.154 W/mK, respectively. The least thermal conductivity, i.e., 0.067 W/mK, was obtained for the hybrid panels with coarse particles at density 0.66 g/cm3. The lowest water absorption (54.75%) and thickness swelling (18.18%) were found in the hybrid panels with fine particles. The observed mechanical properties were a bending strength of 11.49–18.15 MPa and a modulus of elasticity of 1864–3093 MPa. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that hybrid panels had better thermal stability than pure panels. Overall, the hybrid panels manufactured with a coarse particle size exhibited better thermal resistance and mechanical properties than did other panels. Our results show that oil palm wood wastes are a promising candidate for thermal insulation materials.

Mechanical and Fracture Properties of Long Fiber Reinforced Geopolymer Composites.

The aim of the article is to analyze the structure and mechanical properties in terms of the cracking mechanics of geopolymer composites based on fly ash and river sand, as well as metakaolin and river sand with three types of reinforcement material: glass fiber, carbon fiber, and aramid fiber, in terms of their use in additive manufacturing. Geopolymer composites were reinforced with fibers in a volume ratio of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%. Subsequently, these samples were subjected to bending strength tests in accordance with the European standard EN 12390-3. The addition of fibers significantly improved the bending strength of all composites made of metakaolin and sand. The reinforcement with aramid fiber in the amount of 2.0% resulted in more than a 3-fold increase in strength compared to the reinforcement-free composites. An analysis of the morphology of the fibers was carried out on the basis of photos taken from an electron microscope. The correct addition of fibers changes the nature of the fracture from brittle to more ductile and reduces the number of cracks in the material.

The Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Composites Produced With the Use of Alternative Wastes

Various studies on the disposal or storage of the wastes generated due to mining activities have been carried out until today. With the developing technology, the use of alternative products instead of aggregates in Composite and the effect of fiber addition were investigated. The most common of these studies is the bending strength tests on the beam sample. In this study, solid wastes generated by mining operations were used instead of aggregate used in Composite. Beam samples were poured with the dimensions of 40×40×160 mm by adding 4-6 kg/m3 polypropylene fiber to the mixture obtained by using these solid wastes; then, its effects on ultrasonic pulse velocity test, tensile test, and compressive strength tests were conducted. According to the results of these tests, it was found that the fibers had a positive effect on compressive strength and bending strength. Also, it was found that water absorption rates and densities did not have an effect, while the ultrasonic pulse velocity decreased with increasing fiber content.

Foamed Geopolymer Composites with the Addition of Glass Wool Waste.

This study examines foamed geopolymer composites based on fly ash from the Skawina coal-fired power plant in Poland. The paper presents the effect of adding 3% and 5% by weight of glass wool waste on selected properties of foamed geopolymers. The scope of the tests carried out included density measurements, compressive and bending strength tests, measurements of the heat conduction coefficient, and the results of measurements of changes in thermal radiation in samples subjected to a temperature of 800 °C. The obtained results indicate that glass wool waste can be successfully used to lower the density and heat conduction coefficient of foamed geopolymer composites with a fly ash matrix. In addition, the results of changes in thermal radiation in the samples subjected to the temperature of 800 °C showed a positive effect of the addition of glass wool waste. Moreover, the introduction of the addition of glass wool waste made it possible to increase the compressive strength of the examined foamed geopolymers. For the material modified with 3% by weight of mineral wool, the increase in compressive strength was about 10%, and the increase in fibers in the amount of 5% by weight resulted in an increase of 20% concerning the base material. The obtained results seem promising for future applications. Such materials can be used in technical constructions as thermal insulation materials.

EXPERIMENTAL SETTING FOR TESTING THE BOND STRENGTH BETWEEN METAL ALLOY AND PEEK

Purpose: The aim of the article is to present an experimental setting for bending strength testing of metal specimens covered with PEEK. Materials and methods: Three groups of metal specimens made of cobalt chromium alloy are produced using the lost wax technique: group 1 – specimens with a smooth metal surface; group 2 – sand blasted metal surface; group 3 - sand blasted metal surface with retention crystals. The shape and size of the specimens are designed to correspond to the retentive elements of the apparatus for micro tension and micro pressure LMT 100. PEEK is pressed over the specimens, and after thermal cycling, the bond between metal alloy and PEEK is studied using bending strength three-point micro testing. Results and discussion: The experimental setting is focused on the type of specific contact surface between the two materials. The design corresponds to the requirements of apparatus LMT 100 and allows the production of a big number of specimens. Because of the thermal regime of BioHPP pressing, it is impossible to add groups of specimens using contemporary adhesives on the metal surface. Conclusion: Created specimens allow strength investigation by three-point bending micro testing. The experimental setting provides the production of a big number of specimens with the same shape and size.

Influences of thermal treatment temperature on microstructures and properties of glass-ceramics from gold tailings

Use CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics from gold tailings in Hanyin as main raw materials, which were prepared by a melting method. In this paper, the effects of nucleation temperature and crystallization temperature on microstructures and properties of the glass-ceramic specimens were investigated. The thermal property of the glass-ceramics was discussed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and microstructure was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Methods of a 4-point bending strength test, DIL-402C dilatometer and Archimedes method were used to determine the bending strength, thermal expanding coefficient and density of glass-ceramics. The experiment results indicated that the optimal properties of glass-ceramics were obtained by nucleation at 800 °C for 2 h, and then crystalling at 950 °C for 3 h. XRD analyses demonstrated that the main phase of gold tailings glass-ceramics was augite and diopside (CaMgSi2O6), and the minor phase was potassium iron silicate (KFeSi2O6). The bending strength, density and thermal expanding coefficient of the glass-ceramics were 128 MPa, 2.840 g/cm3 and 7.85 × 10−6/°C, respectively.

Investigation on Microstructure, Mechanical and Wear Properties of HVOF Sprayed Composite Coatings (WC-Co + CR) On Ductile Cast Iron.

Recent work indicates that the high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying WC–Co coatings have been used to enhance the wear resistance of various engineering components in a variety of industrial environments. In the present work, WC–Co powder, containing Cr particles in an amount of 10%, was deposited on ductile cast iron with the HVOF thermal spray coating technique. An investigation was conducted to determine the role of Cr particles in the WC–Co coating produced with the HVOF technique on microstructure, mechanical, and wear properties in a system of type: WC-Co coating/ductile cast iron. The microstructure of the HVOF-sprayed WC–Co + Cr coating was characterised by light microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The analysis of the microstructure showed the formation of a coating with low porosity, compact structure, and good adhesion to the substrate with a typical lamellar structure composed of fine molten Cr particles and finely fragmented WC grains embedded in a Co matrix, reaching the size of nanocrystalline. The scratch test was applied for the analysis of the adhesion of coatings to the substrate. The erosion behaviour and mechanism of material removal was studied and discussed based on microstructural examinations. Moreover, the results were discussed in relation to the bending strength test, including cracks and delamination in the system of the WC–Co + Cr/ductile cast iron, as microhardness and erosion resistance of the coating. It was found that the addition of Cr particles to the WC–Co powder, which causes hardening of the binder phase is a key influence on increased mechanical and wear properties in the studied system. Additionally, due to the construction of nanostructured coatings, suitable proportion of hard and soft phases, the technique sprayed HVOF coatings have advantageous properties such as high density and good slurry erosion resistance.

Development and Performance Evaluation of Thin-Layer Color Antiwearing Paving Materials

To develop a color antiwearing wear layer based on epoxy resin adhesives, the effect of single formula composition on the properties of adhesives was analyzed through drawing strength tests, shear strength tests, and bending strength tests. It was found that when the mass ratio of the epoxy resin curing agent and the dosage of the toughening agent increased, the bonding performance and toughness of the adhesive firstly increased and then decreased. With the increase of the mass ratio of phenolic aldehyde amine to polyamide, the bonding performance and toughness of the adhesive were improved, but the effect was significantly reduced when the ratio was more than 2. With the increase of diluent content, the bonding performance and toughness of the adhesive were reduced. Based on response surface optimization, the optimum formulation was recommended. The content of the mass ratio of the epoxy resin to the curing agent and mass ratio of curing agent phenolic amine to polyamide, toughening agent content, and diluent content was determined to be 2.971%, 1.887%, 2.455%, and 1.000%, respectively. And, the dosage of each material was consistent with the effect of the dosage of a single formula on the properties of adhesives. The performance of the color antiwearing thin layer was tested by the adhesion test and antiwearing durability test. It was found that temperature had a significant effect on the adhesion, the adhesion of the thin layer was significantly reduced at low temperature, and the sensitivity to impact load was enhanced, while the adhesion and sensitivity to impact load were effectively improved at more than 20°C. At the same time, the antiwearing of the thin layer decreased rapidly at the initial stage under the reciprocating load but tended to be stable when the load exceeds 500 times.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Sustainable Hydraulic Mortar Based on Marble Slurry with Waste Glass

This paper aims to propose and characterize a sustainable hydraulic mortar entirely obtained by the reuse of waste materials, with marble slurry coming from quarries in the north-western Sicily and glass powder coming from a waste collection plant in Marsala (Province of Trapani). The first was used as raw material to produce the mortar binder by a kilning and slaking process, while the second was used as a pozzolanic additive. The chemical and morphological characterization of the marble slurry was done by XRD, FTIR, STA and SEM analyses. Glass powder was analyzed through particle size distribution measurements, XRD and standard pozzolanic tests. Hydraulic mortars constituted by slaked lime from kilned marble slurry and waste glass powder (LGS) were prepared beside commercial Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) based mortars (NGS) and air-hardening lime (LSS)-based mortars. Mechanical and absorption properties of the mortars were investigated as a function of the grain size of the glass powder by means of three-point bending and compressive strength tests, capillary uptake, helium pycnometry and simultaneous thermal analysis. The results demonstrated that the formulation LGS exhibits significantly improved mechanical and absorption properties compared to air-hardening mortars (LSS). It confirms the possibility of producing a more sustainable hydraulic mortar exclusively from waste materials for civil engineering.

Quasi static mechanical study of vacuum bag infused bouligand inspired composites

Three novel Bouligand inspired composites were produced by vacuum bag infusion manufacturing process and their quasi-static mechanical performance were compared to a conventional aircraft laminate. A morphologic/physical study was first conducted for all configurations and their mechanical response under tensile, three-point bending (3-PB) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests were then evaluated and discussed. No significant number of voids were detected into laminates, however, a rough and poor defined interlaminar region was observed in both Bouligand-like configurations. Under quasi-static mechanical solicitations, and when compared to reference layup, bioinspired configurations have shown similar and 18% higher tensile and flexural modulus. However, the progressive and translaminar failure mode, typically observed in these configurations, led to a lower load bearing capability. Despite presented similar interlaminar resistance than reference, finite element models built have revealed a good correlation between cross-section stress field and failure mode observed experimentally.

STUDY ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF 42CrMo4/NANOS-BA® HIGH-STRENGTH CLAD PLATES AFTER THE PROCESS OF HOT ROLLING AND TWO-STAGE HEAT TREATMENT WITH ISOTHERMAL TRANSFORMATION

The aim of the study was to develop a technology for welding non-weldable 42CrMo4 and NANOS-BA® steel grades in the process of hot rolling and two-stage heat treatment. As a result of physical experiments carried out in a line for semi-industrial simulation of the production of metals and their alloys (LPS) and additional heat treatment, a durable combination of 42CrMo4 and NANOS-BA® steels with high mechanical properties was obtained, including: Rp0.2 = 1036 MPa, Rm = 1504 MPa and A = 10.9%, without microscopically visible cracks and other discontinuities in the joined surface. The quality of the 42CrMo4/NANOS-BA® clad plates produced in this way was assessed on the basis of microstructure examination as well as bending, shear and tensile strength tests.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of straw fibers on the mechanical properties of concrete containing zeolite and bentonite

Cement is one of the most widely used materials in the construction industry, which emits large amounts of carbon dioxide into the environment during production. Environmental challenges and the reduction of energy consumption and the use of natural raw materials have led to increased study and research to find a suitable alternative to cement. Zeolite and bentonite have cement properties. These materials are environmentally friendly and can be easily extracted and also have lower production costs than cement. Since concrete has a low tensile strength, straw fibers, which are natural fibers, have also been used. In this research, 9 different mixing ratios with the amount of 250 kg / m3 cement were made in which different percentages of bentonite and zeolite replaced part of the original cement and the percentage of fibers varied by 1% and 3%. After fabrication, the compressive strength and tensile strength of the samples compared to the reference sample at 7 and 28 days have been compared. Then, two concrete mixtures with 6% zeolite, 1% straw fiber and 6% and 16% bentonites were selected and three-point bending strength test was performed on beams with dimensions of 10 * 10 * 50 cm. The flexural strength of the reference sample in this section, which contains 350 kg / m3 of cement, is 5.37 MPa. The best composition contains 6% zeolite, 6% bentonite and 1% straw fiber, which was able to achieve 98% flexural strength compared to the reference sample.

Relationship Between Tensile Strength and Durability of Oxide Thermoelectric Modules

The durability of thermoelectric modules is investigated by conducting material property tests over a range of module preparation pressures. Tensile strength and bending strength tests are carried out at room temperature for devices comprising one-piece oxide thermoelectric elements (p-type Ca2.7Bi0.3Co4O9 and n-type CaMn0.98Mo0.02O3), silver paste, and silver sheet between two sheets of alumina substrate. Tensile strength was found to increase with device preparation pressure, reaching approximately 20 MPa for p-type devices at a preparation pressure of 6.36 MPa. The tensile strength of the n-type devices was less than 10 MPa. Module performance was tested under heat cycling and vibration by measuring thermoelectric generation properties including internal resistance, open-circuit voltage, and output power of the modules. Modules prepared at pressures above 3.19 MPa were found to have no degradation of thermoelectric properties during the vibration tests. Furthermore, no degradation during heat cycling was observed for modules prepared at 6.36 MPa. Continuous power generation tests at 973 K in air were performed for the modules prepared at 0.116 MPa and 6.36 MPa and no degradation was observed over 2400 h. For the module prepared at 6.36 MPa, no degradation was observed over 10000 h.

The fracture load analysis of different material thickness in adhesively bonded joints subjected to fully reversed bending fatigue load

The adhesive joints used in airframe and wing sections of aircrafts are generally subject to dynamic (fatigue) loading rather than static loading due to environmental conditions. The dynamic loading formed on wing sections of aircraft is generally in the form of fully reversed fatigue. This study experimentally and numerically investigated the lifetimes of single-lap joints (SLJs) of five different adherend thicknesses (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm) – obtained using AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy and Araldite-2015 structural adhesive – under fully reversed bending fatigue loads. Accordingly, before performing fatigue tests, static bending strength tests were carried out on the SLJs to determine the maximum loads to be used for bending fatigue tests and also to evaluate their static performances. Fatigue tests were performed at a loading ratio (R) of −1 and a frequency of 4 Hz. It was determined that the static bending strength of the joints increased by approximately between 43% and 74% with increasing adherend thickness. However, this increase was not the same as the increase in material thickness. In addition, the increased adherend material thickness changed (decreased or increased) the maximum load applied to the joints over infinite cycles (taken to be 2 × 105 cycles). This was because the change in material thickness changed the bending moment formed in the joint and the flexural rigidity of the material.

Novolac thermo-insulating composites embedding construction and demolition waste fillers

Phenolic resin novolac matrix composites encapsulating processed construction and demolition waste micropowder of different grain sizings were manufactured using the appropriate molding techniques and were then studied. Characterizations by means of scanning electron microscopy, as well as elemental analysis by way of energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, were carried out. Additionally, the mechanical and thermal insulating behaviors of these materials were examined through bending and shear strength tests, in accordance with the three-point method and by determination of the thermal conductivity coefficient λ, respectively.
