Efforts to Minimize Work Accidents at PT. Behavior Based Safety (BBS) Method

PT. X is a company engaged in the automotive sector, focusing on truck repair. The purpose of this report is to minimize work accidents through a behavior-based safety (BBS) approach at PT. X. The Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program is an approach to safety based on human behavior. It aims to increase employee awareness, involvement, and responsibility to create a safe working environment. The BBS program at the company aims to improve employee compliance and change work behaviors. The method used in the behavior-based safety approach is called DO IT. The DO IT method consists of 4 steps: Define, Observe, Intervene, and Test. The research was conducted using a qualitative method involving in-depth interviews with workshop management, direct observation, and analysis of documents related to BBS implementation. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of BBS will significantly contribute to improving the performance of the automotive workshop.

Behavior-Based Safety on Rattan Workers at Trangsan Rattan Industry, Sukoharjo Regency Indonesia

A preliminary study conducted on twenty-four rattan workers at the Trangsan Rattan Industry Center showed various types of occupational health and safety risks including respiratory disorder due to exposure of fine dust, hand tools usage , chemical hazards of using rattan coloring, and Muscoskeletal Disorders ( MSDS) due to improper working positions. This condition encourages research to improve safety behavior for workers by identifying factors related to unsafe behavior and implementing Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) for workers . The BBS approach was carried out with four stages, namely Define, Observe, Intervene, and Test (DOIT), while the level of worker behavior was calculated using the Safety Performance Index (SPI). There were ten unsafe actions that were targeted for intervention for hundreds of workers. Through an intervention program which was based on a motivational intervention approach, the value of SPI in the Trangsan Rattan Industry Center increased by 36.21%.

Behavior Based Safety Approach to Improve Workplace Safety in Multistory Building Construction

Behavior Based Safety (BBS) approach is the “usage of science for changing the behavior of an individual”. “Behavior Based Safety” focuses on action of workmen on day-to-day safety behavior and its improvement. This study presents a case study within the multistory building construction in India. This research work plans the outline of the BBS method into 7 steps and encapsulates a number of behavioral safety methods to prevent the workplace accident. The objective of this paper is to create a safe work environment in construction industries by decreasing frequency severity of injuries and increase the safe behavior. The outcome of this research work revealed that a method related to observation, a real-time measure of safety behavior with appreciative and constructive feedback for the significant improvement of the safety performance in multistory building construction. Observers educated to provide appreciative feedback when the workers performed the task safely and to offer constructive feedback to unsafe task performers. Baseline data of current safety performance was calculated before the BBS approach implementation and compared with the safety performance weekly data to identify the improvements.

The Analysis of Worker Safe Behaviour based on the Antencendent Behaviour Consequence (ABC) Behaviour Model

Introduction: PT. Kreasindo Wira Darma is an electrical construction company offering substation and electrical transmission installation in Indonesia. The common basic cause of work accident is unsafe behaviour and unsafe condition. This research aimed to analyze the safe behaviour of construction workers at Blimbing substation using behaviour-based safety approach and Antencendent, Behaviour, Consequence (ABC) theory. Method: This research was an observational descriptive study using cross-sectional design. The data were collected using questionnaire, observation, and interview. There were a total of 20 construction workers at PT. Kreasindo Wira Darma which became the respondents for this study, and total population was used as the samples. This study’s variables include antencendent and consequence as independent variables and worker’s safe behaviour as the dependent variable. Results: most of construction workers had good knowledge by 90%, good awareness by 90%, all workers have good motivation and fulfilled need for safety by 100%, 18 workers said that there were Occupational Health Safety (OHS) rules in effect at the company by 90%, and workers said that they have received rewards/praises and punishments by 95%. Results also showed that most cosntruction workers have applied safe behaviour at the workplace. Conclusion: Workers will consistently practice safe behaviour when they are equipped with knowledge, awareness, good motivation, compliance with Occupational Health Safety (OHS) rules, and are given reward and punishment. Behaviour-based safety approach to improving workplace safety in heavy equipment manufacturing industry

The behaviour-based safety (BBS) approach is the 'use of science for changing the behaviour of an individual'. Implementation of BBS in an industry can significantly impact the entire organisation by reducing accidents. This research work is carried out at the work centre of waterwall panel fabrication area of heavy equipment manufacturing industry for improving workplace safety. Seven steps are used to implement the BBS approach. This work centre consists of 80 employees. Among those, 76 permanent workers like fitters, welders and crane operators are employed to carry out skilled work, and four contract labourers are employed to do unskilled work. The safety performance had improved from the baseline of 57.35% to 77.94% with the intervention of the BBS approach by the end of the 4th week. The results of this research work show that an effective measure of safety behaviour is important for positive behavioural changes among the workers.

An Assessment Model of Safety Production Management Based on Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation Method and Behavior‐Based Safety

To better guarantee the health and safety of employees and reduce the probability of occupational injuries and accidents, it is necessary to evaluate safety production management levels in enterprises. In this study, an evaluation index model was established for the safety production management of an oilfield enterprise. By utilizing an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE), this research is based on the characteristics of the oilfield enterprise and its behavior‐based safety (BBS) management. A comparison of the results of two FCEs shows that the unsafe behaviors of employees were considerably reduced, and the safety production management level was significantly increased. The results of the case study also verify that combining the FCE model and the BBS approach is effective. The combination of the AHP and FCE method with BBS management support aims to improve safety behavior and increase safety training and the identification of critical unsafe behavior, thus reducing occupational injuries and accidents.

The development of science in health world may let use radiation to diagnose a disease. Radiation have some bad effect if excessively exposed, so that management should be create radiographer’s safe behavior to prevent an accident. Management could applied behavior based safety with a behavioral intervention effort and external factor to encourage radiographer’s safe behavior. The aim of this research was to analyze safe behavior by using behavior based safety approach for radiographer in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. This was a cross sectional study with qualitative approach in order to know about behavioral intervention effort and external factor in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Respondent of this research was 11 people who all authorized as radiographer in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. The results of this research represent that radiographer’s behavior in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya 100% included in safe category. Management has used behavioral intervention effort properly, by applied activator and consequence to direct and motivate radiographer’s behavior. As discovered that the external factor of instalasi radiodiagnostik has support radiographer to perform safe behavior. The conclusion of this research was radiographer’s safe behavior created by behavioral intervention effort which used activator and consequence to direct and motivate radiographer’s safe behavior and external factor supporting radiographer’s safe behavior in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Customised Safety Behaviour Checklist at Construction Site

Organization X is a project based company which specialised in the installation of scrubber and other air pollution control equipment in Malaysia. In the year 2013, 39 cases of incidents have been recorded during scrubber installation at construction sites. This situation has not only affected the economic burden of the company but has also affected the work efficiency, company’s performance and reputation. At risk behaviours of workers were identified as the main contributor to this problem. The behaviour based safety approach have been used by implementing the Safety Behaviour Checklist (SBC) to minimise this delinquent. The study was done to investigate the at-risk behaviours that workers may pose and performed during installation of scrubber. Further investigation on the impacts of implementing the customised SBC was also done. After three months of observations, the study found that the implementation of the SBC contributes to the improvement of workers safe behaviour.

ANALISIS PERILAKU AMAN PADA PEKERJA KONSTRUKSI DENGAN PENDEKATAN BEHAVIOR-BASED SAFETY (STUDI DI WORKSHOP PT. X JAWA BARAT)

PT. X is a company in steel structure construction and fabricator pole field. In the company’s Workshop, there are bending, shearing, and cutting processes. The basic causation of work accident are unsafe behavior and unsafe condition. This research aims to analyze the safe behavior of construction workers with Behavior-Based Safety approach in the stage of define and observe of The DO IT Process, with the ABC (Activator, Behavior, and Consequence) model. This is an observational descriptive research with the cross-sectional design. The respondents of this research are 30 construction workers in Workshop of PT. X. The results of this research showed that all workers have good awareness; 93,3% of construction workers have good knowledge; 93,1% have good perception; 92,7% have good motivation; 93,3% stated that the safety needs had been fulfilled; 93,3% of construction workers stated that the existing safety rules of the company had been implemented; 90% of construction workers ever got positive reinforcement; 85,7% of construction workers ever got punishment; the construction workers stated that safety training and management role of the company had been implemented. The result also showed the construction workers largely did safety behavior at work. In order to improve safe behavior, the company needs to give training to all construction workers, implement SOP consistently, evaluate and monitor the worker’s behavior, and implement the Behavior-Based Safety program (The DO IT Process).Keywords: safe behavior, behavior-based safety, construction company

Kajian Implementasi Kesehatan dan Keselamatan Kerja Dengan Pendekatan Behavior Based Safety

This study discusses about how to evaluate the implementation of occupational health and safety (OHS) on batik small and medium sized enterprises in Madura. Successful implementation of OHS is influenced by worker behavior and then is measured by a score of worker safety through the intervention program. Intervention program is designed by using behavior-based safety approach that is based on the identification of hazards and risks at workplace. Intervention program is conducted by the provision of personal protective equipment, work standard setting, supervision and understanding improvement of the OHS. The results show that interventions can improve worker safety score from 34% to 56%.

Proactive behavior-based safety management for construction safety improvement

Construction is one of the most hazardous industries due to its dynamic, temporary, and decentralized nature. The Hong Kong Commissioner for Labor identifies worker behavior as the root cause of construction accidents. Behavior-based safety (BBS) is one effective approach in managing employee safety issues. However, there is little research on the application of BBS in the construction industry. This research proposes an extension of the BBS approach, proactive behavior-based safety (PBBS), to improve construction safety. PBBS integrates the theory of BBS with the technology of Proactive Construction Management System (PCMS). The innovations of PBBS are: (1) automatically monitoring location-based behaviors; (2) quantitatively measuring safety performance; (3) investigating potential causes of unsafe behaviors; and (4) improving the efficiency of safety management. A pilot study of a Hong Kong construction site practicing PBBS was conducted. The experiment results showed that PBBS performed well on construction accident prevention and the Safety Index (SI) of the two project teams, with increased improvements by 36.07% and 44.70% respectively. It is concluded that PBBS is effective and adaptable to construction industry.

Behaviour Based Intervention for Occupational Safety – Case Study

Safety at work is the subject of continuous debates, studies and researches. Traditional safety programs put the responsibility of accident prevention and safety coordination on the shoulders of upper management in each company. An alternative currently being used in industry is Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) concept. A behavior-based approach to industrial safety management has been advocated by many authors and has been found to effectively improve safety performance in different industrial settings and on different continents. In the paper the BBS approach was characterized and the examples of good practices within this area implemented in businesses running in Poland.

Field Learnings from Behaviour Based Safety Implementation: Reviews in Indian Organisations

This field action study in five Indian major organizations includes the reviews of behavior based safety (BBS) implementation, the road-map and action plan to implement BBS approach, and behavioral trends from a large gas company, two aluminum plants, a shipbuilding company, and an engineering plant. A mix of qualitative as well as quantitative data presented in this article would hopefully be useful for companies considering implementing BBS in order to achieve zero-accident/injury-free culture at their workplaces. A comparison of the five multinational organizations all over India revealed the behavioral trends on an average as follows: safe behaviors are 70%, unsafe behaviors as 30%, corrections of unsafe behavior as 67%, and interestingly safe behaviors went up to 90%, which means there is a 20% increase insafe behavior after corrections by all-category observers. The findings reveal that the unsafe/at-risk behaviors are rooted in organizational culture. Hence in order to achieve total safety culture, beyond behavioral safety implementation, the organizational behavior culture domains need attention of the corporate managements such as the quality of construction at project stage, the production target pressures, adequate resources (manpower and materials), sync in safety emphasis among all managers at different levels in the organization.

Descriptive Analysis of a Staff Injury-Reduction Intervention in a Human Services Setting for Children and Youth With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Clinical safety is a dominant concern for human services organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and high-risk challenging behaviors. This article is a descriptive analysis of components that comprised an injury-reduction intervention among direct-care staff at a specialized school. Using a behavior-based safety approach, intervention was associated with fewer staff injuries and more weeks without injury reports. The article focuses on systems-level strategies and recommendations for future research and practice.

Implementation of BBS and the Impact of Site-Level Commitment

This work presents the results of a case study and addresses an important area within the field of construction safety management, namely behavior-based safety (BBS). The study investigates the implementation process of the BBS management approach and assesses how the commitment of site-level management, BBS implementation observers, and operatives’ impact on safety performance by using data collected from construction sites located in Hong Kong. While achieving the set objectives, this work provoked several aspects of education, training, and engineer’s obligations towards managing safety on construction sites. The research introduces BBS practices in five categories: personal protective equipment, house keeping, access to heights, plant and equipment, and scaffolding. Intervention was introduced and its impacts on site safety were monitored and analyzed. The results revealed that improvement in safety performance was higher when the site-management team was more committed to implementing the intervention. The results confirm that the BBS technique based on goal setting and feedback arrangements can be applied to construction sites to deliver better project safety performance. Managerial implications of these findings are discussed, and guidelines for how project managers, safety professionals, and construction safety practitioners can better implement the BBS approach are also proposed.

A behavior based safety approach at a Kuwait research institution

Introduction Behavior based safety (BBS) initiatives are the current trend toward improving safety performance. Method This study outlines the framework of the BBS process and summarizes several behavioral safety approaches to accident prevention. Results Although most of the published research has focused on the improvement of safe behavior in industry, this study is the first to apply the current approach of behavior based safety in a research/educational setting. An experiment conducted at a research institution demonstrated the effectiveness of a well-designed behavior based safety process. A follow-up study indicated that the BBS produced a lasting effect for the experimental group. Impact on Industry Results from this study can be the driving force to implement behavior-based safety processes into educational, research, and training organizations.
