Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., require the same 10 essential amino acids as rats (Auclair and Jamieson 1948, Weaver and Kuiken 1951, de Groot 1952). These amino acids are provided in the diet of honey bees by pollen. Interest in amino acids usually concerns dietary deficiencies, and deficiencies of amino acids in pollen have been reported by Dietz and Haydak (1965) and Herbert et al. (1970). The purpose of our report is to point out and to verify an unusual amino acid composition in the diet of queen bee larvae.
