Neutron spectra in the region of 4 to 7.5 Å from a radial beam tube have been obtained for various fuel and BeO reflector arrangements in the Army Materials Research Reactor. Intensity and signal-to-noise ratio variations in the range of 15% to 20% have been obtained through rearrangement of core elements immediately adjacent to the beam tube termination. In general, the results indicate that the experiment external to the reactor should view reflector element material only at the core face, and this reflector material should be surrounded by fuel for the most favorable intensity and signal-to-noise ratio combination.
