1801. LVAD antimicrobial prophylaxis and infections, a 12-year experience

Abstract Background The incidence of end-stage heart failure necessitating advanced cardiac therapy continues to increase in the United states. Implantable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) represent an important modality that is utilized both as a bridge to heart transplant or as destination therapy. LVAD-associated infections, ranging from driveline exit site or pocket infections to endovascular infections, are a major complication with high mortality. Antibiotic prophylaxis at time of LVAD implantation is therefore an important strategy to mitigate infections. However, a clear surgical infection prophylaxis regimen and associated outcomes have not been reported. Methods We performed a single center, retrospective cohort study evaluating the impact of antimicrobial prophylaxis on risk of infection in patients who underwent LVAD implantation between February 2007 and June 2019 at Mayo Clinic. LVAD-specific and related infections were defined according to the International Society of Heart Lung Transplantation criteria. Single drug prophylaxis (SDP) included cefazolin only, vancomycin only, or cefazolin and vancomycin; multidrug (MDP) regimen includes either of the SDP regimens plus another antibiotic. We compared incidence of infection within 90-day and within one-year of implantation, as well as risk of C. difficile infections between the SDP and MDP cohorts. Results We reviewed 403 patients who received LVAD implantation (Table 1), 402 of had information on surgical prophylaxis. 307 (76%) patients received SDP and 95 patients (24%) received MDP. 14 patients developed an infection within 1 year of implantation (Table 2). There was no difference in the incidence of infections between SDP and MDP arms both at 90 days and 1-year post-implantation (p=0.11). The median time of infection since LVAD implantation was similar between SDP and MDP (p=0.37) arms. Incidence of C. difficile infection was not different between groups (p=0.10) (Table 3). Conclusion There was no significant difference in incidence or time to first infection, within 90-day and 1-year of implantation, between single- and multidrug antibiotic surgical prophylaxis regimens administered at the time of LVAD implantation. Future prospective trials are needed to develop a clear LVAD antibiotic prophylaxis protocol. Disclosures John C. In Memoriam - BrJAC mourns the death of Prof. Dr. Carol Hollingworth Collins and recognizes her great contribution to the Analytical Chemistry in Brazil

Professor Carol Collins graduated in Chemistry from Bates College (1952) and obtained her PhD in Organic Physical Chemistry from Iowa State University of Science and Technology (1958), when she was introduced to the recently developed gas–liquid chromatography. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin and later worked on radiochemistry and nuclear medicine at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Western New York Nuclear Research Center in Louvain (Belgium) and Southwest Asia. Professor Collins came to the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) with her husband, Kenneth Collins, in July 1974, during the university’s first decade, and played a leading role in consolidation of the Institute of Chemistry at Unicamp and in the growth of chemistry and analytical chemistry in Brazil. Her first line of research in Brazil was radioanalytical chemistry, later focusing on chromatographic techniques, initially applied to the products of radiochemical reactions and radiation chemistry. Subsequently, her attention was directed to the preparation of stationary phases for liquid chromatography. She gained remarkable achievement in the area of chromatography that allowed her to publish two books that are very popular in Brazil: "Introduction to Chromatographic Methods" (1987) and "Fundamentals of Chromatography" (2006). Her scientific and technological contributions have been recognized through several awards, including the “Marie Curie Award” from the American Association of University Women and the “Simão Mathias Medal” from the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). She also received honors in recognition of the contributions of Unicamp's 40th anniversary, SBQ's 30th anniversary, a tribute from the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, the National Meeting of Analytical Chemistry, the School of Separations and the Brazilian Symposium on Chromatography and Related Techniques (SIMCRO) Medal. For her outstanding performance and leadership in the creation and consolidation of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society, her name was recognized in the Carol Collins Medal given to each National Meeting of Analytical Chemistry since the 2018 edition. Professor Collins was also a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of São Paulo, and received the title of Professor Emerita of Unicamp on 14 May 2012, in addition to being Emeritus Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Apart from her scientific competence, some characteristics shaped her personality and made her very popular among her colleagues and students: her vast gourmet knowledge, keen taste for caipirinha and coffee, infallible memory, great love for her work and for Brazil, dedication to science, analytical chemistry/chromatography, kindness as a person and her incessant search for justice. She was always receptive to clarifying the doubts of students, teachers and interested parties, which she did with great pleasure, characteristic of those who like to teach and transmit knowledge. The contributions of Professor Collins to the training of human resources, the consolidation and development of the Institute of Chemistry at Unicamp and the analytical chemistry/chromatography sector in Brazil and abroad are immeasurable. Her brilliant trajectory will leave a huge legacy that is difficult to measure and she will remain forever in the memory of those who were fortunate enough to live with her.

668. Restricting Ordering of Multiplex Gastrointestinal Panel Improves Test Utilization

BackgroundThe multiplex gastrointestinal pathogen panel (GIP) is a convenient and quick diagnostic test for determining the infectious etiology of diarrhea. It identifies several of the most common pathogens associated with gastroenteritis. However, it is expensive, and test results may not impact care, given that several of the pathogens in the panel are managed expectantly. We describe our experience with a diagnostic stewardship initiative to resolve the overuse of this testing method. MethodsWe performed a pre/post study of GIPs ordered for inpatients 18 years old and older from December 19, 2018, to December 18, 2020, at Mayo Clinic hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. GIP orders for inpatients were limited to the first 72 hours of hospitalization starting December 19, 2019. Orders after 72 hours were encouraged to be changed to Clostridioides difficile NAAT testing or sent to an infectious disease provider to override on a case-by-case basis. Our hospitals used BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal Panel (BioFire Diagnostics, Salt Lake City, Utah).ResultsA total of 2,641 GIPs were performed during the study period. There were 1,568 GIPs (3.3/100 hospitalizations) in the pre-intervention period compared to 1,073 (2.6/100 hospitalizations) post-intervention, representing a drop of 21.2%. The most common pathogen detected was C. difficile (toxin A/B) (48.8%, n=402), followed by norovirus (17.5%, n=144). The overall test positivity rate was 27.9% (n=736). The test positivity rate decreased 1.8% from 28.6% (n=448) to 26.8% (n=288) after the restriction (p=0.33). The proportion of C. difficile among all pathogens detected increased from 48.5% to 49.7% (p=0.67).Table 1. Pre- and Post-Intervention Test Positivity Rate of Specific Pathogens in GIP ConclusionOur study showed that restricting the ordering of GIP to the first 72 hours of hospitalization and directing providers to standalone C. difficile NAAT testing resulted in a reduction of GIPs performed. There were marginal changes in the test positivity rate of GIP. A limitation of our study is that the timing of post-intervention coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which had unpredictable effects on hospital practice and patient admissions. Ideally, future quality improvement projects should increase the test positivity of pathogens other than C. difficile while lowering the GIP use in diagnosing C. difficile colitis. 267. Therapeutic Management of Bacterial Brain Abscess: An Overview of Diagnosis and Outcomes

BackgroundWe describe and compare the clinical, diagnostic evaluation and outcomes of patients who underwent therapeutic management for pyogenic brain abscess.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed adults who presented with pyogenic brain abscess from January 1, 2009 through June 30, 2020.Results231 patients were identified during the study period. Sixty-one (26.4%) patients received antibiotic therapy alone, and 170 (73.6%) had a combination of antibiotic therapy and surgical intervention. The median age for the medical and combined therapy group was 59 years and 58 years, respectively. Patients who received medical treatment had a higher prevalence of infective endocarditis than those who received combined therapy (6.6% vs. 0.6%; P=0.005). The medical therapy group was more likely to have brain MRI and cranial CT than the patients with combined therapy (75.4% vs. 63.5%; P=0.041). Midline shift (11.5% vs. 31.2%; P=0.002), a single (21% vs. 83%; P=0.001) and greater size (1.4 cm vs. 2.5 cm; P=0.007) brain abscess was significant when comparing medical vs. surgically managed abscess. Stereotactic surgical technique was the preferred diagnostic approach for the medical group (65.6% vs. 46.5%; P=0.010), and excision/craniotomy for the combined group (31.1% vs. 53.5%; P=0.002). Streptococcus viridans group was the predominant organism (32.8% and 25.9%; P=0.30). Compared to those who received combined therapy, patients with medical therapy alone were most likely to receive cephalosporin (72.1% vs. 41.2%; P=< 0.0001), vancomycin (23% vs. 12.4%; P=0.047) and metronidazole (27.9% vs. 14.7%; P=0.022). In both groups, median duration of antimicrobial therapy was 42 days (P=0.12). Patients with medical therapy alone had a higher mortality rate (18% vs. 7.1%; p=0.014) but less neurologic sequelae (21.3% vs. 30.6%; P=0.16) compared with combined therapy. Medical Management. Compared to those who received medical therapy alone, patients with combined treatment had a single and greater size fluid collection with the presence of midline shift. Casirivimab-Imdevimab Treatment Is Associated with Reduced Rates of Hospitalization Among High-Risk Patients with Mild to Moderate Coronavirus Disease-19

Background: Real-world clinical data to support the use of casirivimab-imdevimab for the treatment of outpatients with mild to moderate coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is needed. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of casirivimab-imdevimab treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19.Methods: A retrospective cohort of 696 patients who received casirivimab-imdevimab between December 4, 2020 and April 9, 2021 was compared to a propensity-matched control of 696 untreated patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 at Mayo Clinic sites in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Primary outcome was rate of hospitalization at days 14, 21 and 28 after infusion.Findings: The median age of the antibody-treated cohort was 63 years (interquartile range, 52-71); 45·5% were ≥65 years old; 51·4% were female. High-risk characteristics were hypertension (52·4%), body mass index ≥35 (31·0%), diabetes mellitus (24·6%), chronic lung disease (22·1%), chronic renal disease (11·4%), congestive heart failure (6·6%), and compromised immune function (6·7%). Compared to the propensity-matched untreated control, patients who received casirivimab-imdevimab had significantly lower all-cause hospitalization rates at day 14 (1·2% vs 3·4%; Odds Ratio [OR], 0·26; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0·11-0·64), day 21 (1·2% vs 4·2%; OR, 0·22; 95% CI: 0·09-0·52), and day 28 (1·3% vs 4·9%; OR, 0·21; 95% CI: 0·09-0·48). Comparison of Two Highly-Effective mRNA Vaccines for COVID-19 During Periods of Alpha and Delta Variant Prevalence

Although clinical trials and real-world studies have affirmed the effectiveness and safety of the FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccines, reports of breakthrough infections and persistent emergence of new variants highlight the need to vigilantly monitor the effectiveness of these vaccines. Here we compare the effectiveness of two full-length Spike protein-encoding mRNA vaccines from Moderna (mRNA-1273) and Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b2) in the Mayo Clinic Health System over time from January to July 2021, during which either the Alpha or Delta variant was highly prevalent. We defined cohorts of vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals from Minnesota (n = 25,589 each) matched on age, sex, race, history of prior SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing, and date of full vaccination. Both vaccines were highly effective during this study period against SARS-CoV-2 infection (mRNA-1273: 86%, 95%CI: 81-90.6%; BNT162b2: 76%, 95%CI: 69-81%) and COVID-19 associated hospitalization (mRNA-1273: 91.6%, 95% CI: 81-97%; BNT162b2: 85%, 95% CI: 73-93%). However, in July, the effectiveness against infection was considerably lower for mRNA-1273 (76%, 95% CI: 58-87%) with an even more pronounced reduction in effectiveness for BNT162b2 (42%, 95% CI: 13-62%). Notably, the Delta variant prevalence in Minnesota increased from 0.7% in May to over 70% in July whereas the Alpha variant prevalence decreased from 85% to 13% over the same time period. Comparing rates of infection between matched individuals fully vaccinated with mRNA-1273 versus BNT162b2 across Mayo Clinic Health System sites in multiple states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, Florida, and Iowa), mRNA-1273 conferred a two-fold risk reduction against breakthrough infection compared to BNT162b2 (IRR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.39-0.64). In Florida, which is currently experiencing its largest COVID-19 surge to date, the risk of infection in July after full vaccination with mRNA-1273 was about 60% lower than after full vaccination with BNT162b2 (IRR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.24-0.62). Female-Male Differences in COVID Vaccine Adverse Events Have Precedence in Seasonal Flu Shots: A Potential Link to Sex-Associated Baseline Gene Expression Patterns

Nearly 150 million doses of FDA-authorized COVID vaccines have been administered in the United States. Sex-based differences of adverse events remain poorly understood, mandating the need for real-world investigation from Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and broader epidemiological data sets. Based on an augmented curation of EHR clinical notes of 31,064 COVID-vaccinated individuals (19,321 females and 11,743 males) in the Mayo Clinic, we find that nausea and vomiting were documented significantly more frequently in females than males after both vaccine doses (nausea: RRDose 1 = 1.67, pDose 1 Dose 2 = 2.2, pDose 1 Dose 1 = 1.58, pDose 1 Dose 2 = 1.88, pDose 1 = 3.4x10-2). Conversely, fever, fatigue, and lymphadenopathy were more common in males after the first dose vaccination (fever RR = 0.62; p = 8.65x10-3; fatigue RR = 0.86, p = 2.89x10-2; lymphadenopathy RR = 0.61, p = 3.45x10-3). Analysis of the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) database further confirms that nausea comprises a larger fraction of total reports among females than males (RR: 1.58; pFunding Statement: None to declare. This collection consists of a series of analyses of Louise Colet's writing in a number of genres, as l'éclectisme in its title indicates. A volume on a range of Colet's works is long overdue. As Poyet indicates in his introduction, Colet the writer has often been studied through a lens colored by assessments of the author's personality as well as her relationships with friends, correspondents, and lovers, chief among them Gustave Flaubert. Like a number of her literary sisters in nineteenth-century France, Colet was compelled to take up the pen in many genres to earn her living, yet the volume's subtitle also communicates her stature as a writer who held her own among male contemporaries, especially in the genre of poetry. Antoine Piantoni's essay is a powerful overview of Colet's poetic production and an adept and refreshing presentation of her esthetics as they evolved over time. All the analyses in this volume are meticulously researched, well written, and often break new ground. Of particular note are those by René Sternke, on the irony in the comedy La jeunesse de Goethe, and by Amélie Caldérone, on the politically motivated publication of several dramas about the French Revolution that appeared in the press rather than onstage in order to reach a broader audience. Several essays address Colet's works on Italy, including her enthusiastic support of the Risorgimento, her portraits of important Italian women, and her anticlericalism. Colet often focused on the condition of women and children. María Vicenta Hernández Álvarez explores her criticism of women's education in the narrative poem La servante. There are analyses on the theme of childhood in Colet's poetry, her biography of Émilie du Châtelet, and her reception in Portugal thanks to a translation of Enfances célèbres, a work for children aimed at their moral edification. Not all assessments of the writer are positive. Poyet presents the writer's novels as flawed by both artificiality and self-interest, but also suggests that her autofictions prefigure the novels of today. Éric Le Calvez contributes a meticulously detailed essay on Flaubert's critiques of Colet found in his correspondence, advice she often did not heed. There is a certain tension in this book, as it appears in a series of studies devoted to minor writers (minores), usually polygraphs who never achieved major status. Yet as a whole, this volume attests to Colet's gifts not only as a poet, but also as a playwright, biographer, and essayist. She also emerges as a fascinatingly modern writer, especially in the hybrid genres found in her accounts of travels in Italy or her native Midi, or the defense of women's rights evident in her written response to a defamatory article about her written by Alphonse Karr. This last piece, introduced by Poyet at the very end of the collection, gives Colet herself the final word. The volume includes a useful bibliography, indices of names cited and works cited, and abstracts. Abstract P1-09-03: Clinically relevant gene expression subsets deciphered from breast carcinomas classified by quantified expression levels of estrogen and progestin receptors

Abstract Background: Prior to standardization of IHC parameters by CAP/ASCO Guidelines in 2010 (Hammond et al., Arch Pathol Lab Med), ER/PR measurements were highly variable (e.g., fixation/staining, observer scoring). While serving as the National Reference Laboratory for NCI supported clinical trials by the NSABP, SWOG, CALGB, NCCTG, ECOG and SECSG, both EIA and radio-ligand binding assays (LBA) were employed that quantified ER/PR content and activities. Using ER/PR levels, we assessed relationships of qPCR expression of 85 candidate genes from 569 primary cancers with clinical outcomes to decipher molecular signatures that predict risk of recurrence. Methods: This retrospective study used a unique dataset of de-identified ER/PR results of 1220 primary cancers from patients with clinical follow-up, stored in an IRB-approved Database. ER/PR protein levels, expressed as fmol/mg cytosol protein, were quantified earlier from each carcinoma with FDA-approved kits using either enzyme immunoassay (n = 751, Abbott Labs) or LBA (n = 552, NEN/DuPont). Relationships between ER/PR content assessed by LBA compared to that from EIA were examined. Results obtained from 1988-1996 and de-identified clinical outcomes were examined using REMARK criteria in a CLIA licensed laboratory. Gene expression, ER/PR quantified by LBA or EIA, features of primary breast cancers and clinical outcomes were analyzed by univariable and multivariable Cox regressions, Kaplan Meier plots and LASSO with R software v3.6.0. Gene expression levels were validated by qPCR while molecular signatures were externally validated with SurvExpress. (Aguirre-Gamboa et al. PLoS One e742502013). Results: Examination of patient survival by Kaplan-Meier analyses using cancers classified by quantified ER or PR (regardless of by EIA or by LBA) revealed RFS and OS were related to increased content. Relationships RFS/OS with Kd values from LBA were examined. Also, differences in ER/PR status of carcinomas were associated with RFS and OS of patients (i.e., ER+/PR+ was related to increased RFS and OS while ER-/PR- status was associated with reduced RFS and OS). Univariable Cox regression of expression of each of the 85 genes identified 18 that predicted RFS while 22 genes predicted OS, confirmed by Kaplan-Meier Analyses. Multiple imputation by chained equations (‘MICE’, Zhang, Ann Transl Med. 2016) imputed missing qPCR values in order to utilize all 569 patients and 85 genes. With the ‘SGL’ package in R, an optimal L2 penalty determined the best fit LASSO model (algorithm sets minimum size for each beta coefficient and its associated gene to be included in the final Cox survival models). Sixteen gene subsets were deciphered according to quantified ER, PR or ER/PR status predicted either RFS or OS or both reflecting the increased or decreased hazard for a one unit change in a gene while controlling for other gene associations. Conclusion: Expression of each gene in each of the 16 subsets exhibits a hazard ratio, when taken jointly, predicts either PFS or OS. Multidimensional portrayal of variation in the outcome PFS or OS is controlled by gene expression in the signature for an overall effect. Using expression results validated by qPCR, subsets of ER and/or PR related genes in primary lesions were identified that predict a patient's risk of recurrence and overall survival. Collectively, results suggest that gene expression profiles based on quantified ER/PR content of a biopsy serve as value-added biomarkers for assessing prognosis of breast carcinomas and identifying candidates for developing companion diagnostics. Thanks, Therí, and I’ll talk to you soon. Bye-bye. This voicemail is from Tuesday, March 8, 2011. It was a moment of professional triumph. It was also a moment of fear. I had an offer for a tenure-track job, but I had to negotiate the parameters. I hasten to add that few of us know the art of negotiation and seldom do we learn in graduate school. Though I had great mentors (still do!), this process was daunting nevertheless. I needed to negotiate aspects of my career that most junior faculty think about: a base salary increase, course reduction for the first two years, start-up funds, teaching development, and a deeper reserve of conference travel funds. Books like The Academic Job Handbook advise job seekers on best practices in contract negotiation. Noticeably absent, for me at least, was advice on how best to negotiate aspects of my career related to my disability: digital access to my classroom so that I could teach remotely in case of illness, physical access to both my office and classrooms in case of inclement weather, accessible housing within scooter distance to the campus, increase in the yearly conference funding allowance because traveling with a disability is expensive. When Bates’ former Dean of Faculty Jill Reich called to “work something out,” I am certain that she knew she would need to consider my disability. Nonetheless, joining the faculty at Bates seemed like it would be an exercise in trying to create a separate but equal working space1 in a place where ableism was assumed to be a common denominator between employees. I am grateful that Drs. Dana Williams and Kendra R. Parker saw fit to include me in this necessary publication. I want to give a special thank you to Dr. Shanna Benjamin for her adroit assistance in helping me make this rage eloquent (pace Brittney Cooper). 1 The reference to Plessy v. The separate but equal doctrine still exists as part of the de facto segregation for the disabled. 142 CLA JOURNAL Theri Pickens Though the conversations about my disability and my tenure-track life were supposedtobeseparate—thatis,mydiscussionswithadministratorsaboutcontract terms that were negotiable and our dialogues about disability accommodations that I was legally entitled to—they happened with the same parties during the same meetings. Simultaneously negotiating my contract perks and outlining disability needs risked conflating the two and negating the urgency of the latter. In other words, adding my needs for disability requests to the list of terms I was already negotiating could have been viewed as asking too much or understood as interchangeable with other requests. For example, could administrators read my desire for more conference funding as an exploitative move that was all about being able to travel more on Bates’ dime?2 The dean could have asked whether an increase in base salary meant that I could personally underwrite costs associated with creating accessible housing. Ultimately, in a town where most housing near the campus is owned by the college and none of it is accessible, the school had to create the parameters for me to be able to join the faculty and work at Bates. This volume features a themed issue entitled “Ceremonies, Festivals, and Rituals in the Ottoman World” (guest editors: Ozgen Felek and Sinem Erdoğan İşkorkutan), which includes seven articles and a short introduction. The themed issue represents the fruits of a conference organized by the guest editors in 2017 at Yale University entitled “Recent Perspectives of Ceremonies, Rituals, and Festivals in the Ottoman World.” An exciting area of research, studies on ceremonies, festivals, and rituals in Ottoman history continue to expand and attract a growing number of scholars. Articles in this themed issue draw attention to new sources, methodologies, and questions, while calling for larger comparative perspectives. In this issue of JOTSA, readers will also find articles by Aydoğan Kars and Ayşe Ozil, along with three book reviews and a workshop report by Matthew Ghazarian. In our effort to cover all relevant publications in our growing field of Ottoman and Turkish studies, we have added new book review editors. Looking Back to Look Forward:The Promising Profession of Academic Librarianship Rebecca S. Albitz (bio) In a Forbes op-ed piece in July 2018, Panos Mourdoukoutas, an economics professor from Long Island University in New York, suggested that Amazon bookstores should replace our local public libraries to save taxpayer dollars.1 He was not, by any stretch of the imagination, the first nor the last to predict the demise of libraries, and by association, the passing of the librarian. But, if my professional history is any indication, librarians' career opportunities continue to grow. We in academic libraries have an amazing array of options when we create a career trajectory that is uniquely our own. We can choose to work in small colleges or large universities, either public or private. We can consider a position that offers the opportunity to earn faculty rank and tenure. Do you want to become a manager? You can select roles that will prepare you to become a department head or even a head librarian. In the following essay, I explore the three areas mentioned—large and small libraries, tenure, and management roles—through the lens of my varying experiences to consider the ever-evolving opportunities available to an academic librarian. To offer context to this perspective, I need to provide a brief outline of my career thus far. My first position was media services librarian at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, which included managing the media and microforms department, building and cataloging the video collection, providing reference services for media and film studies, and serving as liaison with the film program. This was truly a unique position: I did everything—acquisitions, cataloging, reference, collections, microforms, department management, and instruction—in a large research library. My next position, archivist for media and the performing arts at New York University (NYU), was more focused on video, collection building, reference, and instruction for all the performing arts departments except music. Following two positions focused on media and reference/instruction, my next role was the first shift in my career. I became the head librarian (and the only librarian for [End Page 1] part of my tenure) at Penn State Shenango, a regional campus in Sharon, Pennsylvania. The differences in this role from my previous positions were numerous, but the most obvious was the type of campus. Shenango was nonresidential, with a student body split between traditional undergraduates and returning adults. Although four-year programs were just being established, most students either earned an associate's degree or took core courses with the intent of transferring to Penn State's main campus for their junior and senior years. In addition, librarians at Penn State have faculty rank and status. The tenure process closely follows that of teaching faculty, with an expectation of publication, presentation, and professional service along with librarianship, which takes the place of credit teaching in the dossier. My husband's career prompted me to apply for my next position—the inaugural electronic resources and copyright librarian for Penn State. The job required that I move from Sharon to University Park and involved a dramatic change in the library's size and scope of services. I no longer had management responsibilities, and my public service duties diminished dramatically (though for much of my tenure in this position, I did provide copyright instruction programs for the entire university). I went from being a public services generalist in a small library to a highly specialized technical services librarian in one of the largest research libraries in the country. After 11 years, my next position took me once again to a small library at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where I was responsible for collections and budgeting. From Bates, I moved to my current position as library director at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, a master's-level institution with a focus on graduate professional education. Size of Institution I have worked in small and large libraries, both public and private, and am now employed at a master's-level institution. Baki Tezcan (University of California, Davis) was elected to succeed her, and will serve as president-elect for the coming year. Patricia Blessing (Pomona College) continues as treasurer. We acknowledge with deep gratitude the effective management and constant attention of OTSA’s outgoing secretary, Hale Yılmaz (Southern Illinois University). Nominated and confirmed by the OTSA Board, Maureen Jackson (Independent Scholar) succeeds Yılmaz as secretary. Board Members Lâle Can (City College of New York), Chris Gratien (University of Virginia), and İpek Yosmaoğlu (Northwestern University) now rotate off the Board. We are grateful to them for contributing their talents and their time tending to the current business of OTSA and thinking about how to strengthen the organization in the future. Senem Aslan (Bates College) and Murat Yıldız (Skidmore College) are now joined on the Board by newly-elected members Giancarlo Casale (University of Minnesota), Emine Evered (Michigan State University), and Will Hanley (Florida State University). We welcome them and look forward to their active contribution to the Board’s regular work as well as to the initiatives we are planning for the coming two years. With the most recent elections, Julia Philips Cohen (Vanderbilt University) finishes her term as head and rotates off the Nominating Committee. She is succeeded as head of the committee by Tijana Krstić (Central European University), serving together with members Aslı Iğsız (New York University) and Seçil Yılmaz (Franklin and Marshall College). 2019 Prize Winners We applaud the 2019 OTSA Prize winners and thank the various committee members for volunteering their time and expertise. The 2019 M. Fuat Köprülü Book Prize was awarded to Heather L. Ferguson (Claremont McKenna College) for The Proper Order of Things: Language, Power, and Law in Ottoman Administrative Discourses (Stanford University Press, 2018). The prize committee was chaired by Benjamin Fortna (University of Arizona) and included Alan Mikhail (Yale University) and Onur Bakıner (Seattle University). The 2019 winner of the Ömer Lutfi Barkan Article Prize, awarded biennially, is Amy Mills (University of South Carolina), for her article “The Cultural Geopolitics of Ethnic Nationalism: Turkish Urbanism in Occupied Istanbul (1918–1923),” Annals of the Amercian Association of Geographers 107, no. 5 (2017):1179–93.
