Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the personality and biographic traits of superior and average college basketball officials. Cattell's 16PF (Form A) was administered to superior (N=25) and average (N=28) officials who were members of the Indiana Collegiate Basketball Association. Performance categories of superior and average officials were established by previous ratings by fellow officials and intercollegiate coaches. Stepwise multiple discriminant analysis was used for analysis. It was found that superior men college basketball officials are more self-sufficient, more self-assured, more self-reliant, and more sensitive to outside social demands than their fellow average officials. Superior officials also had significantly more experience as a college basketball participant than did their average officiating counterpart.
