Coding accuracy, namely the process of conformity of the diagnosis code that has been set by the coding officer based on ICD-10 which greatly affects data reporting and administration. The basic cause of death is the course of any disease, sick condition, or injury that causes or causes the accident that causes death. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the underlying cause of death code based on the selection rule and the MMDS table in patients who died at the Duren Sawit Hospital in 2022. This study used a descriptive method with a quantitative approach which took 88 samples using a saturated sample technique by means of observation and interviews. The results of the study were obtained from 88 samples of the accuracy of the basic causeof death codes based on the general principle selection rule and rule 1 at the Duren Sawit RSKD found that 49 (56%) and 39 (44%) were incorrect. There are factors that affect the inaccuracy of using the 5M elements (Man, Money, Material, method, Machine), namely the man element because the coding officer's profession is not appropriate and less thorough and the elements of the general coding SPO method which are still being revised, do not use selection rules and MMDS tables. Suggestions that officers should be given socializationabout the selection rules and MMDS tables.

Educational inequalities in heart failure mortality and the cycles of the internal armed conflict in Colombia: An observational panel study of ecological data, 1999–2017

Heart failure (HF) is a significant clinical problem and an important public health issue due to the morbidity and mortality that it causes, especially in a population that is aging and affected by social stressors such as armed conflict. We aim to describe the inequalities and trends of HF mortality by educational level in Colombia between 1999 and 2017 compared with the cycles of the internal armed conflict during the same period. An observational study of ecological data panels, with aggregates at the national level, was conducted. Information from death certificates with HF as the basic cause of death (COD) was used. Variables of the year of death, sex, age, department of residence, and educational level were considered. Mortality rates adjusted for age were calculated. A joinpoint regression was used to model the trend of rates by educational level. We found that both men and women with primary education had the highest adjusted mortality rates: among men, RR_primary = 19.06 deaths/100,000 inhabitants, SE = 0.13 vs. RR_tertiary = 4.85, SE = 0.17, and similar differences among women. Mortality rates tended to decrease at all educational levels, with a greater reduction in people with higher educational levels. In both sexes, the behavior of the relative index of inequality showed significant inequality, albeit with a strong reduction during the last decade. Mortality due to HF in Colombia shows inequalities by educational level. In the prevention of HF, education should be considered a structural social determinant. In addition, we analyzed the potential role of the Colombian long-term armed conflict in the observed trends. We highlighted the role of the health sector, together with other sectors (education, work, and housing), in developing intersectoral public policies that contribute to the reduction of cardiovascular mortality disparities.

The Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment-Based Therapy on Perceived Stress, Perception of Illness and Severity of Fatigue in People with Heart Disease

Background and Aim: Coronary heart disease is associated with an epidemic and a very high prevalence in both developed and developing countries and is considered as one of the most basic causes of death in people. This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of treatment based on acceptance and commitment on perceived stress, perception of illness and severity of fatigue in people with heart disease. Methods: The research method was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test type with a control group. The statistical population of the study included all people with heart disease admitted to Shahid Sayad Shirazi Hospital in Gorgan city in 2022, from among whom 30 people were randomly selected in 2 experimental and control groups (15 people in each group). The experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 60-minute therapy based on acceptance and commitment, and the control group did not receive any intervention until the end of the study. The research tools included the questionnaires of perceived stress by Cohen et al. (1983), perception of illness by Broadbent et al. (2006) and severity of fatigue by Krapp et al. (2001). The research data was analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance and using spss software version 22. Results: The findings of the research showed that the treatment based on acceptance and commitment is effective on the perceived stress, perception of the disease and severity of fatigue in people with heart disease (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results of the research indicate that the treatment based on acceptance and commitment, by using the required cognitive skills and thought control, leads to a reduction of perceived stress, perception of the disease and the severity of fatigue in people with heart disease.

Stroke-related mortality analysis in Paraná, Brazil, over 10 years.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death and disability around the world. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the age- and sex-specific mortality rates related to stroke in the state of Paraná, Brazil, between 2007 and 2016. In this cross-sectional study, residents in the state of Paraná were selected by death certificates (from 2007-2016); the basic cause of death was stroke. A descriptive analysis was performed, and mortality rates were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for each year. From 2007 to 2016, there were 62,607 deaths in the state of Paraná due to stroke. Most individuals had medical assistance before death (85.7% in 2007 versus 83.9% in 2016), and most of these deaths occurred in hospitals (73.6% in 2007 versus 74.8% in 2016). Death rates due to stroke increased from 138 (95% CI 135-142) to 163 (95% CI 159-166) per 100,000 inhabitants. This raise occurred mainly in those over 79 years old. For the ages groups of 34 to 44 and 44 to 54 years, mortality rate decreased. In the past 15 years, despite the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke, there has been an increase in mortality due to stroke in the state of Paraná. This fact is possibly associated with the aging of the population because there was a more pronounced increase in the group over 79 years old. Thus, new health strategies are necessary to improve the survival and quality of life of poststroke individuals.

Early physicians' mortality in Espírito Santo: a decade trend.

IntroductionMortality data make it possible to develop indicators to guide the planning of health promotion and prevention actions in order to reduce mortality from preventable causes. However, there are no publications on physicians’ mortality in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil.ObjectivesTo describe mortality distribution and potential years of life lost from 2006 to 2015 among physicians who lived in Espírito Santo.MethodsThis is a descriptive study of secondary data from the Mortality Information System of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The distribution of socio-demographic variables and of basic cause of death was studied by absolute and relative frequencies. Potential years of life lost in each death were considered the years remaining from age at death up to the age limit of 70 years.ResultsThere were 20 deaths of female physicians (14.5%) and 118 (85.5%) of male physicians, with predominance of whites (87.9%) and married (56%) individuals. The main causes of death were neoplasms (39.1%), diseases of the circulatory system (19.6%), and external causes (19.6%). The majority of female and male deaths occurred from 60 to 69 years, but average death was significantly lower among women compared to men (respectively 58.3 and 67.0 years). Potential years of life lost totaled 1,226 years, with a mean of 14.6, which was greater in women (20.4) compared to men (13.4).ConclusionsMortality trends observed in the general population were also present among physicians in Espírito Santo. However, contrary to the general population pattern, average death age was lower in women. Early mortality caused many lost years of life, especially among women.

Annual trend of neonatal mortality and its underlying causes: population-based study \u2013 S\xe3o Paulo State, Brazil, 2004\u20132013

BackgroundPopulation-based studies analyzing neonatal deaths in middle-income countries may contribute to design interventions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, established by United Nations. This study goal is to analyze the annual trend of neonatal mortality in São Paulo State, Brazil, over a 10-year period and its underlying causes and to identify maternal and neonatal characteristics at birth associated with neonatal mortality.MethodA population-based study of births and deaths from 0 to 27 days between 2004 and 2013 in São Paulo State, Brazil, was performed. The annual trend of neonatal mortality rate according to gestational age was analyzed by Poisson or by Negative Binomial Regression models. Basic causes of neonatal death were classified according to ICD-10. Association of maternal demographic variables (block 1), prenatal and delivery care variables (block 2), and neonatal characteristics at birth (block 3) with neonatal mortality was evaluated by Poisson regression analysis adjusted by year of birth. ResultsAmong 6,056,883 live births in São Paulo State during the study period, 48,309 died from 0 to 27 days (neonatal mortality rate: 8.0/1,000 live births). For the whole group and for infants with gestational age 22–27, 28–31, 32–36, 37–41 and ≥ 42 weeks, reduction of neonatal mortality rate was, respectively, 18 %, 15 %, 38 %, 53 %, 31 %, and 58 %. Median time until 50 % of deaths occurred was 3 days. Main basic causes of death were respiratory disorders (25 %), malformations (20 %), infections (17 %), and perinatal asphyxia (7 %). Variables independently associated with neonatal deaths were maternal schooling, prenatal care, parity, newborn sex, 1st minute Apgar, and malformations. Cesarean delivery, compared to vaginal, was protective against neonatal mortality for infants at 22–31 weeks, but it was a risk factor for those with 32–41 weeks.ConclusionsDespite the significant decrease in neonatal mortality rate over the 10-year period in São Paulo State, improved access to qualified health care is needed in order to avoid preventable neonatal deaths and increase survival of infants that need more complex levels of assistance.

Socioeconomic inequalities in the place of death in urban small areas of three Mediterranean cities

BackgroundDying at home is the most frequent preference of patients with advanced chronic conditions, their caregivers, and the general population. However, most deaths continue to occur in hospitals. The objective of this study was to analyse the socioeconomic inequalities in the place of death in urban areas of Mediterranean cities during the period 2010–2015, and to assess if such inequalities are related to palliative or non-palliative conditions.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study of the population aged 15 years or over. The response variable was the place of death (home, hospital, residential care). The explanatory variables were: sex, age, marital status, country of birth, basic cause of death coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, and the deprivation level for each census tract based on a deprivation index calculated using 5 socioeconomic indicators. Multinomial logistic regression models were adjusted in order to analyse the association between the place of death and the explanatory variables.ResultsWe analysed a total of 60,748 deaths, 58.5% occurred in hospitals, 32.4% at home, and 9.1% in residential care. Death in hospital was 80% more frequent than at home while death in a nursing home was more than 70% lower than at home. All the variables considered were significantly associated with the place of death, except country of birth, which was not significantly associated with death in residential care. In hospital, the deprivation level of the census tract presented a significant association (p < 0.05) so that the probability of death in hospital vs. home increased as the deprivation level increased. The deprivation level was also significantly associated with death in residential care, but there was no clear trend, showing a more complex association pattern. No significant interaction for deprivation level with cause of death (palliative, not palliative) was detected.ConclusionsThe probability of dying in hospital, as compared to dying at home, increases as the socioeconomic deprivation of the urban area of residence rises, both for palliative and non-palliative causes. Further qualitative research is required to explore the needs and preferences of low-income families who have a terminally-ill family member and, in particular, their attitudes towards home-based and hospital-based death.

Analysis of the mortality trend in the indigenous population of Brazil, 2000–2016

ObjectivesThe objective of the study is to analyze the mortality trend in indigenous peoples in Brazil. Study designThe study design used is an ecological study. MethodsA study carried out with data from the indigenous deaths recorded on the Mortality Information System in Brazil between 2000 and 2016. The Prais Winsten regression was used to analyze the trend of overall mortality in the country and in its geopolitical regions, in addition to the trend by sex, age groups, and groups of basic causes of death. ResultsOf all deaths, 47,806 indigenous deaths were recorded between 2000 and 2016. The majority was male (56.5%) and 27.2% in children aged younger than 5 years. The major groups of causes of death were the circulatory diseases (15.8%) and external causes (14.9%). The affections of the perinatal period (23.7%) and infectious and parasitic diseases (18.5%) were the main causes in children aged younger than 5 years. The indigenous mortality rates showed an increasing trend in the country (annual percent change [APC] = 2.37%). There was growth in both sexes and in most age ranges. Mortality from external causes (APC = 4.71%), neoplasms (APC = 4.67%), and respiratory causes (APC = 4.14%) also presented growth. The infectious and parasitic causes and genitourinary causes showed a stable trend in the studied period. ConclusionsThe increasing trend of mortality in the analyzed variables showed disparities between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Brazil, pointing to the need for greater investment in basic social sectors, such as health, education, housing, and sanitation.

Analysis of the characteristics of second primary malignancy affecting the survival of lymphoma patients

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of the second primary tumor affecting the survival of patients with lymphoma, and to explore the risk factors of death from the second primary tumor. Methods: The medical records and related death information of 1 173 lymphoma patients who had already died with known causes were collected. The basic causes of death and the characteristics of patients who died of the second primary tumor were analyzed. Cox regression model was used to analyze the risk factors of lymphoma patients who died of the second primary tumor. Results: Among the 1 173 patients who had died, 94 (8.0%) died of the second primary tumor, 935 (79.7%) died of the primary lymphoma and 144 (12.3%) died of other diseases. The second primary tumor accounted for 17.5% (38/217) of all causes of death in patients with the survival period of more than 5 years, and the second primary tumor accounted for 28.3% (17/60) of all causes of death in patients with the survival period of more than 10 years. Among 94 cases who died of second primary tumors, 31 died of lung cancer, 15 died of gastric cancer, 13 died of liver cancer, 9 died of pancreatic cancer, 6 died of colorectal cancer, 6 died of second primary lymphoma and 14 died of other types of tumors. Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that age, first-line treatment effect, and chest or mediastinal radiotherapy were associated with the death from second primary tumors for lymphoma patients (all P<0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the effect of first-line treatment (P=0.030) and the chest or mediastinal radiotherapy (P=0.039) were independent factors for the death of lymphoma patients from the second primary tumor. Conclusions: The second primary tumor is an important factor affecting the survival of lymphoma patients, and the risk of death from second primary tumors increases significantly over time. The effect of first-line treatment and radiotherapy in the chest or mediastinum are independent factors for the death of lymphoma patients from the second primary tumor.

National trends in age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of acute kidney injury in Peru.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common disorder that causes high healthcare costs. There are limited epidemiological studies of this disorder in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to describe trends in the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of AKI in Peru.Methods: We conducted an ecological study based on a secondary data sources of the basic cause of death from healthcare and death records obtained from establishments of the Ministry of Health of Peru for the period 2005-2016. The age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of AKI were described by region and trend effects were estimated by linear regression models.Results:During the period 2005-2016, 26,633 cases of AKI were reported nationwide. The age-standardized incidence rate of AKI per 100,000 people increased by 15.2%, from 10.5 (period 2005-2010) to 12.1 (period 2011-2016). During the period 2005-2016, 6,812 deaths due to AKI were reported, which represented 0.49% of all deaths reported for that period in Peru. The age-standardized mortality rate of AKI per 100,000 people decreased by 11.1%, from 2.7 (period 2005-2010) to 2.4 (period 2011-2016). The greatest incidence and mortality rates were observed in the age group older than 60 years.Conclusions: During the study period, incidence of AKI increased and mortality decreased, with heterogeneous variations among regions.

Mortality due to malnutrition in older adults, Colombia, 2014-2016

ResumenIntroducción. En el contexto de la salud pública y la nutrición, las personas mayores se consideran un colectivo vulnerable. Los programas de atención en salud dan prioridad a los hábitos alimentarios y a la vigilancia del estado nutricional para mejorar su pronóstico vital.Objetivo. Estimar los casos de muerte por desnutrición de la población mayor de 65 años en Colombia entre el 2014 y el 2016, para contribuir al análisis y la toma de decisiones en salud encaminadas a mejorar la situación nutricional de esta población.Materiales y métodos. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo y retrospectivo en el cual se analizaron los certificados de defunción de los años 2014 a 2016, cuya causa básica de muerte fuesen las deficiencias y anemias nutricionales. Se estimaron las tasas de mortalidad por sexo y departamento de residencia, y las frecuencias de distribución según las variables demográficas. Resultados. Las defunciones por desnutrición en Colombia para el adulto mayor en el periodo de estudio, fueron 3.275 (0,5 % del total de muertes). La tasa de mortalidad varió entre 5,4 y 108,3 por cada 100.000 adultos mayores. La mayor mortalidad se presentó en los mayores de 80 años, especialmente en hombres.Conclusión. La desnutrición proteico-calórica en los adultos mayores es la causa más frecuente de muerte por desnutrición, seguida de las anemias nutricionales. La mayor mortalidad se presentó en el grupo de edad de mayores de 80 años, y en los departamentos de Amazonas, Guainía y Vaupés, los cuales tienen las mayores tasas para todos los grupos de edad.

Corrected cancer mortality rates for the elderly in the states of the Brazilian northeast

Estimates of the true magnitude of mortality in the Brazilian northeast has been fraught with major obstacles due to underreporting and problems with the quality of information on the basic causes of death. The scope of this study was to evaluate the impact of the redistribution of deaths corrected by Active Search Research and Garbage codes on the mortality rates of the major types of cancer among the elderly in the northeastern states. The Ledermann method was used to reallocate the deaths. The number of deaths before and after the correction revealed a significant variation, especially the figures for breast cancer where the variation was 53.5%. With corrected data, the elderly aged 80 years or older had a prostate cancer death rate which was 18 times higher than those aged 60 to 64 years. Higher levels of prostate cancer deaths among men, and breast cancer among women, were observed in all of the northeastern states. Tracheal, bronchial, lung and stomach cancer resulted in different levels of distribution according to gender, with higher rates among men than among women. Correction of death data resulted in significant increases in the number of recorded deaths. The methodology adopted in this work was the simple application of feasible factual data by the information system managers.

Mortality by cryptococcosis in Brazil from 2000 to 2012: A descriptive epidemiological study.

BackgroundCryptococcosis is a neglected and predominantly opportunistic mycosis that, in Brazil, poses an important public health problem, due to its late diagnosis and high lethality.MethodsThe present study analysed cryptococcosis mortality in Brazil from January 2000 to December 2012, based on secondary data (Mortality Information System/SIM-DATASUS and IBGE).ResultsOut of 5,755 recorded deaths in which cryptococcosis was mentioned as one of the morbid states that contributed to death, two distinct groups emerged: 1,121 (19.5%) registered cryptococcosis as the basic cause of death, and 4,634 (80.5%) registered cryptococcosis associated with risk factors, mainly AIDS (75%), followed by other host risks (5.5%). The mortality rate by cryptococcosis as the basic cause was 6.19/million inhabitants, whereas the mortality rate by cryptococcosis as an associated cause was 25.19/million inhabitants. Meningitis was the predominant clinical form (80%), males were the more affected (69%), and 39.5 years old was the mean age. The highest mortality rate due to cryptococcosis as basic cause occurred in the state of Mato Grosso (10.96/million inhabitants). Mortality rates due to cryptococcosis as associated cause were highest in the states of Santa Catarina (70.41/million inhabitants) and Rio Grande do Sul (64.40/million inhabitants), both in the South Region. Southeast, Northeast and South showed significant time trends in mortality rates.ConclusionsThis study is relevant because it shows the magnitude of cryptococcosis mortality linked to AIDS and removes the invisibility of a particular non-AIDS-related disease, accounting for almost 20% of all cryptococcosis deaths. It can also contribute to control and surveillance programs, beyond highlighting the urgent prioritization of early diagnosis and proper treatment to reduce the unacceptable mortality rate of this neglected mycosis in Brazil.

Trend in mortality from preventable causes in children: contributions to the evaluation of the performance of public health services in the Southeast Region of Brazil.

The aim of this study was to analyze the trend in mortality of children under 5 years old living in the Southeast Region of Brazil and states using the "Brazilian List of Causes of Preventable Deaths". We conducted an ecological time-series study of mortality from preventable and non-preventable causes, with corrections for ill-defined causes and underreporting of deaths, from 2000 to 2013. There was a decline in the rate of childhood mortality due to preventable (4.4% per year) and non-preventable (1.9% per year) causes in the Southeast Region and its states, except for those reducible by vaccine prevention, which remained stable in the period. The study called attention to the smaller decrease in causes of preventable deaths by providing adequate care to women during pregnancy (1.7%), with an increase in mortality rates due to basic causes of death due to maternal conditions affecting the fetus or newborn and stability in disorders related to short-term pregnancy and low birth weight, a fact that possibly occurred due to inadequate quality of prenatal care. Minas Gerais showed the greatest reduction in annual percentage of deaths from preventable causes (5.5%), compared to other FUs, but it led in mortality rates up to 2010, while Rio de Janeiro led between 2010 and 2013. The decline in childhood mortality was expected in the last decade, due to progress in the response of health care systems, and to improvements in health and determinant social conditions as well. However, the rate is still high compared to other countries, showing that there is still much room for improvement.

Mortalidad atribuida a telangiectasia hemorrágica hereditaria y variabilidad geográfica en España (1981-2016)

ObjectiveTo identify the mortality directly attributed to hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) in Spain, and to analyze its time trends and geographic variability. MethodPopulation-based deaths due to HHT were selected from the Spanish National Statistics Institute: codes 448.0 (ICD-9, 1981-1998) and I78.0 (ICD-10, 1999-2016) as the basic cause of death. Specific and age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated by sex, as well as standardized mortality ratios (SMR) by province and district, and smoothed SMR. ResultsWe identified 327 deaths attributed to HHT (49.5% women), with the highest mortality at 80-84 years in men (0.220 per 100,000 inhabitants) and at 75-79 years in women (0.147 per 100,000 inhabitants). Age-adjusted mortality rates did not show any significant time trend between 1981 and 2016 in Spain. The provinces of Navarra, Cantabria, Guipúzcoa, Pontevedra and Las Palmas had higher than expected mortality, as well as the regions of Monte Sur (Ciudad Real) and Ripollès (Girona). ConclusionsThis study has identified some regions with higher risk of death due to HHT in Spain. It is unknown whether these differences are associated with the distribution of types HHT1 and HHT2, and further studies will be necessary to know the determinants of this geographical variability. These findings are useful to complement the information provided by other studies and registries, and for health planning.

Mortalidade de mulheres em idade fértil no Piauí, Brasil, 2008-2012: causas básicas dos óbitos e fatores associados

Justificativa e Objetivos: A morte de mulheres em idade reprodutiva é um evento de grande magnitude em todo o mundo, mas o perfil é distinto entre as regiões de alta e baixa renda. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar causas básicas e fatores associados aos óbitos de mulheres em idade reprodutiva no Piauí, de 2008 a 2012. Métodos: Estudo descritivo de base populacional, com dados de todas as declarações de óbitos de mulheres entre 10 a 49 anos registradas no Comitê de Mortalidade Materna do Piauí. Foram calculados odds ratio (OR) e intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%) para avaliar a associação entre as variáveis. Resultados: Neoplasias (20,9%), doenças cardiovasculares (18,8%), causas externas (18,6%) e maternas (5,5%) foram as causas básicas mais encontradas. Causas externas e maternas predominaram entre 10 a 29 anos e, a partir de 35 anos, neoplasias e doenças cardiovasculares. A mortalidade materna foi mais provável de ocorrer em municípios do interior (OR=2,04; IC95% 1,51-2,33), com até 50.000 habitantes (OR=1,33; IC95% 1,16-1,78) e com IDH-M &lt; 0,566 (OR=1,42; IC95% 1,34-2,01). Conclusões: O padrão de mortalidade é semelhante ao encontrado na população feminina brasileira em idade fértil, sendo que as principais causas básicas encontradas poderiam ser evitadas mediante a implementação de medidas de intervenção.

Evaluación de la calidad de los certificados de defunción del Hospital Amor de Patria, de San Andrés Islas, Colombia, en 2014

Introduction:&nbsp;The quality of the medical death certificate in the ‘causes’ section is of fundamental importance in public health, in addition to its ethical, medico-legal and juridical consequences. Objective: To evaluate the completion quality of the death certificates and the causes recorded at the Amor de Patria Hospital on the island of San Andrés (Colombia). Methodology:&nbsp;Cross-sectional descriptive study, using non-probability sampling for convenience of year selection. The evaluation categories were defined: “causes of death”, “direct cause”, “intermediate cause”, “basic cause of death”, “other pathological states” and “sequence”. Additionally, a review of the completion quality of the causes of death was carried out from two points of view: the structure and consistency of the diagnoses completed on the death certificate. Calculation was made of the proportions of typed errors, consistency and kappa statistic for the causes according to the 6/67 list of the Pan American Health Organization. Results:&nbsp;172 death certificates were completed. According to the place of death, 131 deaths occurred in the health institution and 41 at home; in 9.9% an error of basic cause was identified, and in 10.5% the absence of the sequence; there was consistency in the basic cause in 55.9% of the certifications. Conclusion:&nbsp;It is necessary to enhance the training of institutional human talent in the certification of vital facts, given the identification of error in 28% of death certificates, with a moderate consistency in the causes of death, with a kappa statistic of 0.58.

Implementing a script to improve the quality of the Brazilian Disease Surveillance Data System using record linkage

IntroductionThe National Disease Surveillance Data System (SINAN) is the main tool used by tuberculosis control programs to measure control actions and disease incidence rates in Brazil. Therefore, data quality is essential to support health surveillance and management.&#x0D; Objectives and ApproachThe aim of this study was to propose an algorithm for the qualification of the variables type of entry, treatment outcome, HIV test, HIV/AIDS co-infection and diabetes comorbidity.&#x0D; We conduct a probabilistic record linkage between three databases of the city of Rio de Janeiro: SINAN-Tuberculosis, 2004-2012; the Mortality Information System (SIM), 2009-2013; and AIDS unified database, until 2012 (SINAN-AIDS, SIM registries that AIDS was the basic cause of death, drug distribution and laboratory databases). The criteria for qualifying the variables were based on technical guidelines, published by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. We implemented a script using Structured Query Language.&#x0D; ResultsThe script had 103 rules. There was an 115% increase in the treatment output classified as "dropout" due to a decrease in: i) the number of records with patient transference but that they were not followed by another health care unit; output treatment classified as "ignored"/missing values; records with treatment output classified as "cure" before the end of the treatment. There was a 28% decrease in the number of records with treatment output classified as "death due to tuberculosis" and a 64% increase in those classified as "death due to other causes". There was a 2.4% increase in the number of records with diabetes as a comorbidity, a 5.3% increase in the number of registries with HIV-positive test and a 8.7% increase in TB-HIV/AIDS co-infection.&#x0D; Conclusion/ImplicationsLinking databases is an important strategy for retrieving information from other systems to improve the quality of information to support decision making for TB control.
