The Psocoptera of East Africa-a taxonomic and ecological survey

The ecology of 62 species of Psocoptera obtained in a survey carried out in the dry season in East Africa is discussed. Twenty-eight new species are here described: Thylacella angustipennis; Lepinolus fuscus; Trogium apterum; Hemiseopsis obscurus; Liposcclis pleswpuber; Caecilius aequalis, frater, proxmus and uirgalus; Paracaecilius copiosus and lucidus; Harpezoneura indotata; Lcchesilla acutiloba, cornistema, keniensis and rectigladia; Heterocaecilius aequabilis; Pseudoscottiella maculata; Elipsocus ignobilis; Lesneia niger and pulchra; Haplophallus afruanus; Mesopsocus acutilobus, alatus, difiilis, nitidifrans and propinquus. Redescriptions are given of Caecilius inquinatus Enderlein, Paracaecilius pallidus (Pearman), Harpezoneura pallens Pearman, Pseudocaecilius morstatti Enderlein and Mesopsocus montinus Enderlein. Keys are given to the African species of Paracaecilius Badonnel and to the East African species of Mesopsocidae. A checklist of the Psocoptera known from East Africa is provided.

The Psocidae (Insecta:Psocoptera) of New Guinea, including a New Coleopteriform Genus from High on Mount Wilhelm

Twenty-four species of the family Psocidae (Psocoptera) are listed for New Guinea; four new genera and 19 new species are described and keys to genera and species provided. One of the new genera, Elytropsocus, is coleopteriform and flightless and has only been found above 3000 m on Mt Wilhelm.

Plate tectonics and the distribution of the insect family philotarsidae (order psocoptera) in the southwest pacific

A study of SW Pacific Psocoptera in the last decade has revealed the existence of a subfamily (3 genera, 65 species) of the Philotarsidae which is confined to the eastern section of the Indo-Australian Plate. Of the 3 constituent genera, one (2 species) is confined to New Zealand, another (31 species) to the Inner Melanesian Arc, and the third (32 species) to Australia, the Inner Melanesian Arc, New Zealand and islands of the New Zealand Plateau. The other subfamily (4 genera, 86 species) includes a genus (5 species) which is basically Holarctic; one (19 species) which extends from southern Africa through the Oriental Region to Australia, the Pacific islands and South America; a southern genus (34 species) whose distribution excludes Africa and is weakly represented in the Australian area; and one newly discovered genus (28 species) confined to Australia, Melanesia, New Zealand and South America. The significance of plate tectonics and the possible roles of fragmentation and dispersal are discussed in relation to these distribution patterns.

An appraisal of the Thyrsophorinae stat.nov. (Psocoptera, Psocidae) and of its constituent genera from the Neotropics

Abstract Thyrosophoridae is reduced to a subfamily (Thyrsophorinae) of the Psocidae, and a revised key to genera given. Dictyopsocus is allied with Poecilopsocus as a subgenus of Thyrsopsocus. Thyrsophorus anticus and T.leucotelus are transferred to Thyrsopsocus (Poecilopsocus). Augmented descriptions, including figures of genitalia, are given for eight described species of Thyrsophorinae (Thyrsophorus speciosus, Thyrsopsocus (Dictyopsocus) pennicornis comb.n., T.(P.)caloroides, T.(P.)iridescens, T.(Thyrsopsocus)bellus and T.(T.)psocoides).

Epipsocidae and Pseudocaeciliidae (Psocoptera) from Sri Lanka

Abstract Four new species of Epipsocidae (Epipsocopsis-two, Epipsocus-two) and two new species of Pseudocaeciliidae (Pseudocaecilius - one, Allopsocus - one) are described from Sri Lanka. Pseudocaecilius ornatus Enderlein is redescribed, and recorded from Sri Lanka for the first time.

Summary Seven new species of Psocidae, comprising two of Blaste, one of Trichadenotecnum and four of Ptycta are described from Kenya. Additional records are given of three previously described species, and a note on one further species included.

Psocidae (Psocoptera) from Malaysia and Singapore

Abstract Eleven species of Psocidae arc recorded from Malaysia or Singapore, seven of these beins described as new. These are Blasle nana, B. longivalva, Psoeoeerastis parasinensis, Scaphopsoeus orientalis, Psoeldus (S. str.) murphyl, P. (s. I) hirsutus, and TriehadenOleenum malayense. Oenitalia of two previously described species (Podopteroeus longicornis Banks and Psoeldus hermosus Banks) are figured. and additional informatiori on these species given.

Studies on the biology of the predaceous mite Cunaxa capreolus Berl. (Acari, Prostigmata, Cunaxidae) During life cycleCunaxa capreolus Berlese passes through egg, larva, three nymphal stages and adult. Each moving stage is proceeded by a quiescent one. Biological process such as hatching, moulting and mating were investigated. Female usually deposites its eggs singly in protected places. Number of deposited eggs per female, when fed on book lice (Psocoptera), was positively correlated with temperature. It averaged 24.6, 30.7, 40.7, and 43.5 eggs at 15°, 20°, 25° and 30 °C. Incubation period as well as duration of immature stages and adult longevity were negatively effected with temperature. The generation period (from egg to egg) ranged from 24.8 to 64.2 days when temperature changed from 30° to 15 °C. Within these limits of temperature, the simple regression indicated that an increase of 1 °C decreased the generation period for about 2.6 days.

The classification and phylogeny of the Psocoptera

This work provides a phylogenetic classification of the insect order Psocoptera. Some of the problems involved, mainly arising from lack of adequate published data, are pointed out and work carried out to overcome them is indicated in a short introductory section (Part I). This consisted of accumulating data on the genera from published texts and illustrations, adding data from the study of fresh material or material held in collections and compiling generic definitions in adequate detail where possible. Part II gives a general description of the Psocoptera together with brief background information on their biology. As considerable changes are proposed in the classification of the order (in Part VII) the classification in use at present is set out for comparison to generic level and a brief history of systematic work on the order is given (Part III). The data necessary for a discussion of the phylogeny is presented in the series of definitions of genera and suprageneric groups in Part IV. Data on fossil forms is given in Part V. The principles of phylogenetic study are briefly discussed in Part VI and the important question of the relatively primitive or advanced condition of characters in the order is discussed. The monophyly of the order and the relationships between genera are established using Hennig's system and the results are set out in discussion and dendrogram. On the basis of the relationships so established a classification of the order is proposed which is considered to be practical and to reflect evolutionary history of the group (Part VII). Comments on the distribution of the Psocoptera are made in Part VIII and it is suggested that, despite inadequacy of data, a consideration of the distributions supports the proposed classification in general terms. A general discussion follows and references and figures are included.

In order of decreasing numbers they were ants, bark lice, beetles, mites, sowbugs, springtails, spiders, snails, millipeds, harvestmen, hemipterous nymphs, biting midges, a slug, a damsel bug and a wasp. Observations on their distribution among the nests are included.
