Purpose: The high prevalence of psychopathology in bariatric surgical candidates, combined with the improvement of medical comorbidities after bariatric surgery, suggests that patients who have psychiatric needs may have much to gain from bariatric surgery. Among surgeons and psychologists, no consensus has yet been reached as to the validity and essential elements of a bariatric preoperative psychological assessment (BPPA).
