Poly(3-alkylfuran) films have been prepared by both an electro-chemical method and a chemical method utilizing FeCl 3 as a catalyst. Poly(3-alkylfuran) is fusible at relatively low temperature. The melting point decreases with increasing alkyl chain length. Enhancement of conductivity and drastic spectral change have been also observed upon doping, which have been discussed in terms of polaron and bi-polaron models. The band gap of poly(3-alkylfuran) is smaller than that of non-substituted polyfuran contrary to poly(3-alkylthiophene)s. Thermochromism is also not so remarkable compared with poly(3-alkylthiophene). These results have been discussed in terms of donating characteristics of alkyl chain and differences in size and in electro-negativity of O and S atoms which influence on total energy and electronic band scheme.
