Antarctic Asteroid Odontaster validus : Constancy of Reproductive Periodicities

The fact that samples of Odontaster validus from the Balleny Islands (67 degrees S) and Robertson Bay (71 degrees S) closely resembled reproductively samples taken from McMurdo Sound (77 degrees S) indicates reproductive synchrony in this species over much or all of their circumcontinental antarctic distribution. This synchrony suggests that the reproductive periodicities of O. validus are both adapted to and synchronized by the summer period of phytoproduction and that neither light nor temperature changes have any direct synchronizing role.

Morphology of North Macquarie Ridge

SOUNDINGS in the Southern Ocean between New Zealand and the Antarctic continent have been sufficient to permit definition of a general elevation of the sea floor extending from the Balleny Islands region, across the Pacific Antarctic and Indian Antarctic Ridge junction, north through Macquarie Island towards New Zealand. This elevation, the Macquarie Ridge, is commonly depicted on bathy-metric charts either as a substantially continuous feature at least as far north as Macquarie Island with its crest lying in depths between 1,000 and 2,000 metres; or as in the chart utilized by Adie1, with an extensive deep water gap separating the northern end of the Ridge from New Zealand.

Balleny Islands Reconnaissance Expedition, 1964

Abstract New Zealand's activities in the Ross Dependency, though belated, have been intensive since the beginning of IGY (1957–58). The geological and survey activities, at the reconnaissance level, are almost complete, and programmes in the biological and physical sciences are well established in the continental area. It was the logical connection of this work with similar studies on the Subantarctic islands that led to the proposal for an expedition of about two months' duration to the Balleny Islands in the austral summer of 1964–65, as part of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme.

Two unpublished accounts of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1839–43

[The British Antarctic Expedition, 1839–43, consisted of two Naval vessels, H.M.S. Erebus and Terror, with Sir James Clark Ross as leader and Captain F. R. M. Crozier as second-in-command. The objects of the expedition were mainly concerned with terrestrial magnetism, a subject of particular interest to Ross who had discovered the North Magnetic Pole in 1831. The expedition circumnavigated the Antarctic continent and made a number of important geographical discoveries. It twice penetrated the pack ice.of the Ross Sea; it discovered, and roughly charted, 500 miles of new coastline in Victoria Land; it discovered Ross Island and the Ross Ice Front, also the James Ross Island group; it visited Prince Edward Islands, les Crozet and les Kerguelen; and it sighted Joinville Island and the Balleny Islands. Observations of terrestrial magnetism were made from stations, either permanent or temporary, set up during the voyage.
