Demystifying artificial intelligence for veterinary professionals: practical applications and future potential.

The field of veterinary medicine, like many others, is expected to undergo a significant transformation due to artificial intelligence (AI), although the full extent remains unclear. Artificial intelligence is already becoming prominent throughout daily life (eg, recommending movies, completing text messages, predicting traffic), yet many people do not realize they interact with it regularly. Despite its prevalence, opinions on AI in veterinary medicine range from skepticism to optimism to indifference. However, we are living through a key moment that calls for a balanced perspective, as the way we choose to address AI now will shape the future of the field. Future generations may view us as either overly optimistic, blinded by AI's allure, or overly pessimistic, failing to recognize its potential. By understanding how algorithms function and predictions are made, we can begin to demystify AI, seeing it not as an all-knowing entity but as a powerful tool that will assist veterinary professionals in providing high-level care and progressing in the field. Building awareness allows us to appreciate its strengths and limitations and recognize the ethical dilemmas that may arise. This review aims to provide an accessible overview of the status of AI in veterinary medicine. This review is not intended to be an exhaustive account of AI.

The Purity Myth: Why Stigmatizing GAI in Academic Writing Is Harmful

This article explores the evolving role of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in academic writing, addressing the challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations surrounding its adoption. While GAI tools like ChatGPT enhance efficiency and accessibility, their use in writing remains stigmatized due to traditional notions of authorship and intellectual rigor. This article argues against this stigma, advocating for a balanced perspective that values content quality over outdated ideals of textual purity. By embracing GAI responsibly and transparently, academia can foster innovation, democratize access to publishing, and redefine the collaborative potential of human–machine partnerships in advancing knowledge.

The Role of AI in Supporting Dyslexic Students in the Language Classroom

The qualitative paper explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing language learning for students with dyslexia. To do so, the study delves into existing literature to understand the unique challenges faced by dyslexic learners and the upcoming role of AI in addressing these challenges. Then, the paper highlights three innovative ways AI can be integrated into the language classroom to support dyslexic students: 1) AI as a writing helper, utilizing context clues to assist in proofreading and refining student writing; 2) AI as a text-to-speech assistant, providing auditory support for reading and comprehension tasks; and 3) AI as a tool to practice target vocabulary, where AI generates personalized exercises enabling students to master key vocabulary. Each suggestion is scrutinized for its practical implications, benefits, and potential limitations, providing a balanced perspective on the integration of AI in educational settings. The paper aims to contribute to the discourse on technology as a way to achieve a better learning environment for students with dyslexia.

Bibliometric and positivist analysis of the balanced scorecard perspective for redesigning business incubation services in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Small business failure has been an enduring problem in developing economies such as South Africa. In view of this challenge and the crucial role of the small enterprises in the economy, small business incubation has widely been adopted to increase the success and viability of emerging enterprises. With the present turbulence and business model disruption that is prevailing in the business environment because of the technological revolution, the need to strengthen operations of small business incubators has become paramount. The purpose of this study was to explore the relevance of the balanced scorecard (BSC) perspective in redesigning the operations of small business incubators in South Africa. It considered the internal, learning, financial and customer perspectives on redesigning operations of small business incubators in the technological context. The methodology of this review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Bibliometric analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. It employs an extensive search strategy across the Scopus database, rigorously applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, yielding a detailed analysis of 33 selected studies that concentrated on business incubation. This study therefore performs a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of existing literature to provide insight into publication trends, critical articles, research sponsorship contribution and the philosophy of positivism, based on an analysis of objective patterns of the reality of redesigning the operations of small business operators through the lens of the BSC. The study further adopted a quantitative approach based on a questionnaire that was issued to 250 incubators from several sectors across South Africa. The study established that the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies was low, and that many small business incubators were not sure how the BSC perspective could be adopted with the aid of 4IR technologies. The study noted a need for further research on technological adoption and how the implementation of the BSC can be strategically implemented to enhance operational efficiency among small business incubators.

Critical Discourse Analysis of People’s Daily and the New York Times’ Headlines on the Beijing Winter Olympics

This paper examined the headlines of the Chinese newspaper, People’s Daily, and the American newspaper, the New York Times, about the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. To investigate the possible ideological biases of news headlines, this paper performs corpus-based critical discourse analysis. It hypothesizes that Chinese media will use positive strategies to report the event, whereas American media will maintain a neutral stance. Fairclough’s three-dimensional analysis model and sentiment analysis tools via Google apps were applied to analyze news headlines of the two newspapers. With “Beijing Winter Olympics” as the keyword, People’s Daily generated 261 results and a sentiment score of 60.2 whereas the New York Times produced 235 results and a sentiment score of 0.1 from February 3 to 20, 2022. The analysis reveals that People’s Daily predominantly uses positive language and active voice, frequently quoting authoritative figures to reinforce the success and international approval of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Notable features include a high frequency of positive words, reinforce China’s high-power position in the sentence structure. Conversely, the New York Times presents a more balanced perspective, with both positive and negative sentiments. It often employs passive voice and indirect language to highlight controversies and challenges, such as human rights issues and the political implications of the Games. The New York Times’ headlines also exhibit the use of metaphors and euphemisms to subtly convey skepticism about China’s intentions. The conclusion of this study is that People’s Daily is committed to establishing and maintaining the image of a strong and capable Chinese government, while the New York Times, although striving for journalistic objectivity, still exposes ideological differences towards China, which also reflects the geopolitical tensions between China and the United States.

Pros and cons of sub‐specialisation in orthopaedics and traumatology—Is the general orthopaedic and trauma surgeon a relic of the past?

AbstractThe evolution of orthopaedics has witnessed a pronounced shift from generalist practice to subspecialisation, a trend that has fundamentally reshaped the field over the past century. Originally, orthopaedic surgeons were trained to address a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions. However, increasing complexity and specialization in knowledge have driven a progressive narrowing of focus within orthopaedics. This editorial explores the rise of subspecialty training and fellowship programs in orthopaedics, particularly in North America, where over 90% of orthopaedic surgeons now pursue subspecialty fellowships. While subspecialisation has improved surgical outcomes and created experts in specific anatomical regions and techniques, it has also led to challenges. Surgeons with highly focused expertise may face difficulties in managing conditions outside their niche, and subspecialisation may inadvertently limit comprehensive patient care, especially for those with complex, multi‐faceted needs. The career paths of orthopaedic trainees are increasingly shaped by both personal interests and market demands, with subspecialists seeking greater professional and economic benefits. Additionally, orthopaedic training models in Europe vary, further complicating a unified approach to subspecialisation. This editorial calls for a balanced perspective that values both subspecialty excellence and the broad‐based skills of orthopaedic generalists, particularly as the future of generalist orthopaedic practice faces uncertainty amidst ongoing subspecialisation trends.

A study on self-concept among b.ed students in ongkharak district

This study examined the self-concept among B.Ed students in Ongkharak District, adopting a normative survey method. The participants included 46 B.Ed students who were randomly selected from a B.Ed college in Ongkharak District. The research instrument utilized for data collection was the Self-Concept Questionnaire, developed by Dr. Jerusalem and SALF, validated at a 0.05 level of significance.The results revealed that male and female B.Ed students do not differ significantly in their self-concept. This finding suggests that gender does not play a significant role in influencing the self-concept of B.Ed students in this context. The study highlights the uniformity in self-concept levels between male and female students, indicating a balanced perspective across genders in their sense of self.Future research could explore additional factors that might influence self-concept, such as socio-economic status, teaching experiences, or cultural influences. Expanding the sample size and including participants from multiple institutions could further enhance the generalizability of the findings. These insights can contribute to developing targeted interventions to support self-concept development in teacher education programs.

Although often perceived as just a regional matter, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict developed as part of the larger, global environment. This aspect is confirmed by the multitude of actors involved in the effort to provide a balanced perspective on the relations between Israel and Palestine. In this context and despite a seeming alienation, the EU continues to remain a relevant actor in shaping certain dynamics in relation to the conflict. In many of these cases, an important role is played by certain populist initiatives supported by the Romanian government in order to generate an ideational socialization with Israel and certain Central and Eastern European governments in relation to the EU’s position on Israel. In this context, the research will be focusing on analysing the connection between the elements shaping this common ground and the main ideological lines guiding the subsequent interactions between the Israeli and the Romanian government during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Disulfiram in liver diseases: a double-edged sword.

Disulfiram, a synthetic drug, has historically played a significant role in the treatment of alcoholic liver disease as the first medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for alcohol use disorders. Beyond its efficacy in inhibiting alcohol addiction and treating alcoholic liver disease, disulfiram has also demonstrated potential in managing various liver conditions, including certain metabolic liver injuries and liver cancer. As an established, cost-effective drug with well-documented synthesis methods, disulfiram holds promise for broader application in liver disease treatment. However, its clinical use is hindered by the risk of inducing pharmacologic liver injury. This potential for liver toxicity necessitates careful patient selection, monitoring, and consultation with healthcare providers, which can limit its practicality in treating patients with existing liver conditions. This review aims to analyze the multifaceted role of disulfiram in liver diseases comprehensively. By exploring its therapeutic efficacy, potential benefits, and inherent limitations, we seek to provide a balanced perspective that maximizes disulfiram's therapeutic potential while ensuring the safety and well-being of patients. This thorough examination will also highlight areas for future research, paving the way for optimized treatment protocols that incorporate disulfiram in the context of liver disease management.

How Can Generative Artificial Intelligence Techniques Facilitate Intelligent Research into Ancient Books?

Generative AI changes the paradigm of natural language processing research, sets off a new trend of research in computational humanities and computational social sciences, and provides unique perspectives on digital intelligence-enabled ancient book revitalization and intelligent applications. The article explores the role of multimodal large models in image processing and OCR of ancient books. We discuss and exemplify how to use Large Language Models for intelligent information processing of ancient texts and explore combining prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), supervised fine-tuning, LangChain, and other techniques to improve performance in ancient text mining and applications. This article also looks forward to the broad prospect of intelligent agent technology combined with the Large Language Model in the innovative application of ancient book revitalization. The research focuses on digitizing ancient books, intelligent processing of ancient texts, and intelligent application of ancient book revitalization. It demonstrates the feasibility, advancement, and creativity of the application of generative AI and its derivative technologies in the field of computational humanities, especially in the field of ancient book preservation, to provide intelligent solutions for the dissemination of traditional thought and culture, from the perspective of the whole process of the technology of digital humanities and computational humanities research. The article also gives examples of the intelligent application of AI in the restoration of ancient books and the annotation of ancient texts. Although Large Language Models demonstrate transformative potential in advancing the field of ancient text research toward intelligent analysis, there remain certain limitations. This article points out their shortcomings in areas such as knowledge completion for ancient texts, understanding emotions and cultural nuances, as well as ethical and accountability issues. It emphasizes the need for a more balanced perspective on the role that generative AI plays in the exploration and utilization of cultural heritage.

The review synthesizes evidence from multiple jurisdictions, demonstrating blockchain's capacity to reduce tax fraud, streamline compliance processes, and facilitate real time tax collection. Our analysis reveals that blockchain implementation in tax systems can potentially reduce tax gaps by 75-80% in VAT schemes and decrease compliance costs by 40-50% for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions. The paper also explores critical challenges, including scalability issues, regulatory frameworks, and implementation barriers, providing a balanced perspective on both opportunities and limitations. Marketing Educators and Artificial Intelligence: A Perspective on Productivity and Innovation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing and transforming industries around the globe. Through the exploration of various AI applications in teaching, research, and administrative tasks, this article illuminates both the potential and limitations of AI for enhancing faculty productivity while improving their effectiveness and innovation in the teaching and research arenas. We use the technology acceptance model (TAM) as a framework to organize our discussion concerning the adoption of AI by marketing faculty. Moreover, this article addresses ethical implications surrounding AI utilization, emphasizing the importance of understanding and navigating issues of bias, intellectual property, and privacy. Through a comprehensive examination, this article concludes with a balanced perspective on the many opportunities and challenges presented to marketing educators by AI. We aim to advocate a rational approach for harnessing its benefits while acknowledging its limitations.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare delivery represents a transformative opportunity to enhance the lives of people living with disabilities. AI-driven technologies, such as assistive devices, conversational agents, and rehabilitation tools, can mitigate health disparities, improve diagnostic accuracy, and facilitate effective communication with healthcare providers, fostering more equitable healthcare environments. This commentary explores these applications while addressing the ethical challenges and limitations associated with AI deployment. Specific challenges, such as algorithmic bias, privacy risks with patient data, and the complexity of designing inclusive technologies, are discussed to provide a balanced perspective. For example, biased diagnostic tools may lead to inequitable care, and privacy breaches can compromise sensitive data. Key areas of focus include personalised care through AI-powered systems, the design of inclusive AI technologies incorporating continuous feedback loops and partnerships with advocacy groups, and the development of AI-enabled robotics for physical assistance. This commentary paper emphasises the importance of addressing these limitations alongside advancing ethical AI practices and ensuring continuous user involvement to meet the diverse needs of people living with disabilities, ultimately promoting greater independence and participation in society. Consequently, while AI holds transformative potential in advancing equitable and inclusive healthcare for people with disabilities, addressing ethical challenges, overcoming limitations, and fostering user-centred design are essential to fully realise its benefits and ensure these innovations promote autonomy, accessibility, and well-being.

Effect of Applied Voltage Value on Lithium 6 Isotope Enrichment By Intermittent Voltage Application Electrodialysis Method

Thermonuclear fusion power generation assumes a nuclear fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium. Deuterium is abundant in seawater, and it is assumed that it can be recovered from there. Tritium rarely exists in nature. Therefore, tritium must be produced through a nuclear fission reaction between lithium and neutrons. Lithium exists stably in nature in the states of lithium 6 (6Li) and lithium 7 (7Li), and the isotope ratio is 6Li/7Li = 7.6/92.4. From the perspective of lithium production rate and energy balance, it is necessary to supply lithium with an isotope ratio of 6Li/7Li ≥ 90/10. The mercury amalgam method is the only practical method, but it has a large environmental impact [1]. Therefore, new 6Li isotope enrichment methods are being explored. One promising method is electrodialysis. Hoshino et al. reported that 6Li isotope enrichment could be achieved by electrodialysis using a porous polymer membrane impregnated with a liquid electrolyte [2, 3]. We have previously reported that 6Li isotope enrichment efficiency can be improved by applying a voltage with an appropriate intermittent profile to the front and back surfaces of the diaphragm of a lithium-ion conductive solid electrolyte membrane [3]. Here we investigated the effect of applied voltage during intermittent profile electrodialysis on isotope enrichment rate and lithium transfer rate. The isotope enrichment rate was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In continuous voltage application, the 6Li isotope enrichment rate decreased as the applied voltage increased, but in intermittent voltage application, the 6Li isotope enrichment rate did not decrease as the applied voltage increased. Modern Physics and Hyperrealism-antirealism Tendency

This paper delves into the philosophical implications of modern physics, particularly theoretical physics, and its tendency towards hyperrealism-antirealism. Inspired by Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality, we argue that certain aspects of contemporary physics, such as the interpretation of quantum mechanics and the pursuit of theories of everything, exhibit characteristics of a hyperreal state. This hyperreal state is characterized by the detachment from reality, the dominance of simulation over the real, and the loss of a clear distinction between the real and the imaginary. We explore how this trend has led to a departure from a balanced realist perspective, hindering the pursuit of a complete and coherent understanding of the physical world.

Enhancing technological sustainability in academia: leveraging ChatGPT for teaching, learning and evaluation

Purpose This study aims to investigate the evolving role and impact of ChatGPT in higher education. It seeks to understand the applications, benefits and challenges associated with ChatGPT, focusing on its potential to enhance teaching, learning and assessment while addressing ethical considerations in the educational context. Design/methodology/approach Using a comprehensive literature review approach, this study systematically examined 29 existing studies and scholarly works related to ChatGPT in higher education. Synthesizing these findings offers a multifaceted view of the subject, encompassing applications, advantages, limitations and ethical implications. Findings The study indicates that ChatGPT can have a significant impact on personalized learning, lesson planning, providing feedback, creating study materials, generating quizzes and exam questions, supporting language learning, offering virtual teaching assistance, tutoring and fostering critical thinking. However, it also sheds light on the ethical issues and challenges associated with its use, including privacy and data protection, transparency and alignment with educational principles. Practical implications This study underscores the practical applications of ChatGPT in higher education, offering insights that can significantly enhance teaching, learning and assessment practices. By leveraging ChatGPT, institutions can personalize learning experiences and provide tailored feedback and streamlined assessment processes, thereby improving student engagement and understanding. In addition, the integration of ChatGPT as a virtual teaching assistant can enhance teaching effectiveness and efficiency by supporting classroom activities, providing additional resources and answering students’ questions in real-time. Originality/value The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive exploration of ChatGPT’s applications in higher education, offering a balanced perspective on opportunities and ethical considerations. By providing valuable insights, it equips educators and institutions with a deeper understanding of the ChatGPT’s potential and challenges in the educational landscape.

Alloimmune Causes of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Cellular Mechanisms and Overview of Therapeutic Approaches.

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a complex early pregnancy complication affecting 1-2% of couples and is often linked to immune dysfunction. Aberrations in T and B cell subpopulations, as well as natural killer (NK) cell activity, are particularly influential, with studies showing that abnormal NK cell activation and imbalances in T and B cell subtypes contribute to immune-mediated miscarriage risk. Successful pregnancy requires a tightly regulated balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory immune responses. In the early stages, inflammation supports processes such as trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling, but this must be tempered to prevent immune rejection of the fetus. In this review, we explore the underlying immune mechanisms of RPL, focusing on how dysregulated T, B, and NK cell function disrupts maternal tolerance. Specifically, we discuss the essential role of uterine NK cells in the early stages of vascular remodeling in the decidua and regulate the depth of invasion by extravillous trophoblasts. Furthermore, we focus on the delicate Treg dynamics that enable the maintenance of optimal immune homeostasis, where the balance, and not only the quantity of Tregs, is crucial for fostering maternal-fetal tolerance. Other T cell subpopulations, such as Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, also contribute to immune imbalance, with Th1 and Th17 cells promoting inflammation and potentially harming fetal tolerance, while Th2 cells support immune tolerance. Finally, we show how changes in B cell subpopulations and their functions have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. We further discuss current therapeutic strategies aimed at correcting these immune imbalances, including intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), glucocorticoids, and TNF-α inhibitors, examining their efficacy, challenges, and potential side effects. By highlighting both the therapeutic benefits and limitations of these interventions, we aim to offer a balanced perspective on clinical applications for women facing immune-related causes of RPL.
