Quality of Life and its Predictors Among Neurosurgical Patients — Systematic Review of Research

Quality of life is an important aspect in the fields of medicine and health sciences. It is presented as a complex concept. Therefore, it is presented in various ways. Its interpretation and definition depends mainly on the discipline and area of study. Very often, the quality of life is also defined in the context of the well-being that a person experiences during his life. It depends on the state of health. It can take into account a wide variety of problems, because neurological diseases bring about such unwanted effects as pain, the need for medical and rehabilitation stays, social isolation, and one of the worst consequences, i.e. shortening life expectancy. Therefore, it is important to conduct research on the quality of life among neurological patients. The results obtained from the conducted and continued research on large groups of patients could constitute a specific compendium of knowledge about the situation of patients, their needs and the perceived quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present research on the assessment of quality of life and its predictors among neurological patients. The Examination On The Industry 4.0 Of The Dispositional Affect In Accountant’s Ethic Lapses Behavior

Finance and accounting are an area that are many unethical activities could be happen especially in this fourth industrial revolution today. In this study, we analyze the impact among the dispositional affect (positive affect and negative affect), gender, age, educational background, work experience to ethical lapses behavior. Dispositional affect is divided into four states which are the enthusiastic, the happiness, the frustration, and the fear. We find that disspositional affect, age, education background, work experience and gender are not significantly influences the ethical lapses behavior. Enthusiastic and happy people will try to avoid doing ethical lapses even from their superior’s behest because they have genuinely positive achieve goals and nobel expectations into their job. Negative affect of frustration and fear also have no significant influence to the ethical lapses behavior. The ambiguity of situations that tend to be uncertain and unpredictable can cause anxiety in other psychological cases. The frustation and fear make people tend to aware and protect themselves from bad consequence of ethical lapses. Other than variable educational background, age, work experience, negative affect of frustrated and negative affect of fear have highly significant correlation. The implications from this study for practice and research are also provided.

Inferring Intentions from Consequences: How Moral Judgments Shape Citizen Perceptions of Wartime Conduct

Abstract How people interpret the intentions of others is fundamental to politics. This article examines intention understanding in the domain of how citizens evaluate wartime conduct. Drawing on recent work in moral psychology, it argues that people are more likely to attribute intentionality to wartime actions that produce morally bad consequences than otherwise identical actions that produce morally good consequences. We test this theory with two vignette-based survey experiments. Our results show that this hypothesis holds in a variety of contexts relating to civilian casualties and the destruction of heritage sites during war. By unlocking the moral psychology of intention understanding, this article contributes to the field of political psychology in general, and more specifically to theoretical debates in International Relations (IR) about public opinion on just war doctrine.

Marine Tourism Infrastructure and Human Resources Development

In the development of marine tourism, two kinds of impacts on the environment will emerge, positive and negative. The positive impacts include: (1) increasing accessibility and economic activities (2) increasing amenities, and (3) creating attractions. The negative impacts include: (1) pollution of the environment, change the quality of the environment. (2) change the original shape of the Marine tourism area, and (3) social impacts. When the development concepts have been realized and managed optimally, it will automatically have a major impact on improving the community’s economy in a sustainable manner in the future, which will open up large enough jobs. On the outside the region, the community can feel the positive impact of the development of tourism and economic improvement, because the community can also take the opportunity to try in the fields related to the development of marine tourism around the area. Conversely, it could only receive bad consequences from the development of marine tourism. It can be concluded, that there will be sustainable development if there is a balance between infrastructure development and human resource development. This research is part of a case study on the initial concept of structuring the Gampong Krueng Raya coastal area, Sabang City, NAD, from the socio-economic aspect. This research uses descriptive qualitative and interpretative methods. Data and information obtained by literature study and field observations.

Early Rehabilitation Care for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Concept Analysis Study

BackgroundAvailability and efficiency of early rehabilitation care are crucial for the restoration and improvement of brain function. Moreover, it can help increase the possibility of the patient’s successful future integration in the community. However, there is no clear and general consensus on this concept (regarding patients with traumatic brain injury) and it is considered a poorly developed area of research.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to analyze the concept of early rehabilitation care in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).MethodsWalker and Avant’s (2011) approach was employed to analyze this concept. Various databases and search engines were explored to find all the relevant data regarding the concept of early rehabilitation care from 1990 to 2016. Finally, the definition, usage, features, antecedents, attribute, consequences, and empirical referents on the subject of early rehabilitation care were extracted.ResultsThe results of the concept analysis demonstrated that the most important features of early rehabilitation care include early specialized comprehensive care, purposeful and patient-centered care, and teamwork. Hence, the objectives include decreasing the bad consequence caused by immobility, contracture, bladder and intestinal dysfunction, pressure ulcer, and sleeping disorders.ConclusionsIt is believed that the concept of early rehabilitation care is not fully established in the literature in patients with traumatic brain injury, and there are only rudimentary ideas and steps toward applying this concept. Therefore, clarifications on this concept can pave the way for further application of early rehabilitation care.

Underlying Vulnerabilities to the Cytokine Storm and Adverse COVID-19 Outcomes in the Aging Immune System.

Older adults are far more vulnerable to adverse health outcomes and mortality after contracting COVID-19. There are likely multiple age-related biological, clinical, and environmental reasons for this increased risk, all of which are exacerbated by underlying age-associated changes to the immune system as well as increased prevalence of chronic disease states in older adults. Innate immune system overactivity, termed the cytokine storm, appears to be critical in the development of the worst consequences of COVID-19 infection. Pathophysiology suggests that viral stimulation of the innate immune system, augmented by inflammatory signals sent from dying cells, ramps up into a poorly controlled outpouring of inflammatory mediators. Other aging-related changes in cells such as senescence as well as higher prevalence of chronic disease states also likely ramp up inflammatory signaling. This in turn drives downstream pathophysiological changes to pulmonary, cardiovascular, skeletal muscle, and brain tissues that drive many of the adverse health outcomes observed in older adults. This article provides an overview of the underlying etiologies of innate immune system activation and adaptive immune system dysregulation in older adults and how they potentiate the consequences of the COVID-19-related cytokine storm, and possible uses of this knowledge to develop better risk assessment and treatment monitoring strategies.

The environment is fast degrading. Experts believe that in the nearest future, the environment will collapse, if the current rate of degradation continues. One of the main drivers of this degradation is believed to be technology. This has led to the widespread perception of technology as a curse rather than a blessing to the environment and humanity. This work agrees that technology is one of the main causes of environmental problems but disagrees that technology is a curse. Technology in itself is value-neutral; it is its usage that leads to bad or good consequences. It is the contention of these researchers, that technology when well driven could restore the health of the environment. Technology due to its wrong positioning in the past has caused environmental problems. It could be repositioned to foster environmental health in the future. Technology therefore, has the potential, to restore and heal what it has wounded, when properly driven.

Some of the strategies to respond to COVID-19—including physical distancing, school closures, trade restrictions, and country lockdowns—are impacting food systems by disrupting the production, transportation, and sale of nutritious, fresh, and affordable foods, forcing millions of families to rely on nutrient-poor alternatives.

The long-run effects of poverty alleviation resettlement on child development: Evidence from a quasi-experiment in China

Background: Poverty alleviation resettlement (PAR) program has become an important approach adopted by Chinese government to deal with rural poverty. Earlier programs were experimented for decades; we study a PAR program implemented by a local government in 1994. Objective: This research aims to study the effects of the PAR program on the long-run development of children from a life course perspective. Methods: We adopted a quasi-experimental design, by comparing the experimental group with a control group, using information of children’s long-run outcomes from field survey and government archive. Results: We find that girls are worse off both in terms of education outcome and individual earnings in adulthood. Boys are less likely to be affected by the PAR experiment, but their earnings in adulthood are worse than those in the control group. Conclusions: Overall, the results of the PAR experiment are not positive, for which we provide some possible explanations. Easier job access might discourage long-term investment in education. The PAR program might have short-term economic benefits but the long-term impact could be negative because of constrained choice of employment and location-specific skill accumulation that later can become less beneficial. Contribution: The paper investigates the potential bad consequences of poverty alleviate resettlement on children’s long-run development. From a policy perspective, in the program we studied, people in the treated group are simply resettled to a designated area. A “one to many” relocation with free destination choices might be better.

Sri Lanka’s Economic Woes amidst COVID-19 and the Way Forward

Whereas the ongoing COVID-19 crisis is yet another tragic event that has added a further blow to Sri Lanka’s already reeling economy, it also presents an opportunity to rethink about the country’s economic future. This essay argues that the way forward for Sri Lanka after the crisis is to practice traditional economics by putting in place a state sponsored manufacturing sector, instead of relying heavily on activities like tourism and supplying migrant labor to other countries. The pandemic provides further proof that depending on such service oriented sectors to lead the economy can have bad consequences in times of global emergencies.

Our House is on Fire: How Librarians can Help Young Climate Activists

Many librarians are inspired by Greta Thunberg and the millions of young people who have begun mobilizing to pressure government and corporate entities to address the climate crisis. During the Global Climate Strike week from September 20 to 27, 2019, it is estimated that over 7.5 million people worldwide joined Thunberg in agitating for change (Global Climate Strike, 2019). Our situation is dire. In June of 2019, scientists at the Permafrost Laboratory at the University of Alaska Fairbanks reported that permafrost melting in the Canadian High Arctic had already exceeded estimates of melting not previously expected to occur until the year 2090 (Farquharson et al., 2019). In response, Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International, stated that “thawing permafrost is one of the tipping points for climate breakdown and it’s happening before our very eyes” (Reuters, 2019). Rapid permafrost thawing would suddenly release enormous quantities of carbon dioxide and methane, initiating a feedback loop that could cause global temperature to rise even more catastrophically (Reuters, 2019). Recently, 400 scientists from 20 different countries released a statement urging mass actions of civil disobedience as the only way to pressure policy makers to act quickly enough in order to avert the worst consequences of climate change (Green, 2019).

New insights into the processes of biological evolution and human reproduction provided through a dialogue between science and Qur’an

In this paper I present new insights into the processes of biological evolution and human reproduction in the light of a dialogue between the current scientific knowledge and Qur‟an verses. I demonstrate how this dialogue could provide new complementary information and a more comprehensive state of each of these two processes. After clearing up some confusions and uncertainties related to the biological evolution process I propose a new vision for this process considering that the Creator (Allah) of the entire Universe had organized and supervised the emergence of living beings depending on a wonderful evolutionary plan. As this vision is hopefully in agreement with my interpretations of related Qur‟an verses, I concretize it from them. One of scientific paintings deduced from these verses shows how our humankind emerged at the top of a complex network of evolutionary stages evolved from the earth like the emergence of the upper part of the top of a tree. To the second biological process „Human Reproduction‟ Allah gives a more accurate designation „Human Picturing Creation‟ insisting on the fact that the major acts of this process do not happen randomly but under His supervision. Moreover Allah given to the major elements of this process, wonderful designations including some unnoticed details through superb rhetoric formats peculiar to Qur‟an. At the end of this paper I point out that my interpretations of Qur‟an verses, based on new rigorous methodology, are generally different from the existing ones showing how the latter include errors and distortions making them incompatible with science. More bad consequences, such as terrorism, have been the result of erroneous interpretations of some verses on socio-political issues. To solve this problem of erroneous interpretations and related false considerations that have accumulated through the ages and were merged into cultures of Muslim societies, I call for a “First International Real Renewal of Islam”

Financing COVID-19, Inflation and the Fiscal Constraint

The COVID-19 pandemic is producing an economic depression that, however, could be substantially reduced if the state in each country, besides making the required health spending, compensates the companies and households that are losing with the social distance and lockdown policies. Governments, however, limit their expenditures not to increase the public debt. There is, however, the possibility that central banks buy new securities from the Treasury to finance such exceptional spending. Considering several economic constraints that policymakers face, this policy will not conflict with the inflation constraint. Money is an endogenous variable that does not cause but just validates a going inflation. It conflicts partially with the fiscal constraint, but avoids the increase in the public debt. And, in this case, it does not have the bad consequences of fiscal indiscipline—excess demand that, successively, causes increases in imports and current account deficits that appreciate the national currency, accelerate inflation, and lead to currency crises. Monetary financing of the COVID-19 will not cause any of these three evils.

Una de las peores consecuencias de los conflictos armados es el desplazamiento de personas de las zonas de conflicto en busca de seguridad. Estos acontecimientos generan graves efectos en la salud mental de la población y deterioran el tejido social. El objetivo principal de este artículo es comprender los problemas de salud mental que sufren los desplazados por el conflicto en Colombia desde la perspectiva de la restitución integral de las víctimas. La principal conclusión es que la atención de la salud mental de los desplazados es un proceso integral que involucra no sólo factores clínicos, sino también factores sociales, económicos y culturales que, en conjunto, crean las condiciones para que superen el trauma sufrido durante el proceso de desplazamiento forzado.

Adolescent brain and the natural allure of digital media .

The growing amount of screen time among adolescents has raised concerns about the effects it may have on their physical and psychological health. Although the literature is divided on whether the effects are mostly positive, neutral, or mostly negative, it is likely that the impacts will be highly individualized with a mixture of good and bad consequences for each person. Understanding behavioral and neurobiological phenomena of adolescence may help to guide research and interventions to optimize the benefits and minimize the risks. Particular aspects of adolescent development relevant to the issue include: (i) hunger for human connectedness; (ii) appetite for adventure; and (iii) desire for data.

Work-Family Balance of Managerial Employees: A Study in a Sri Lankan Firm

Work-family balance of managers is critical for organizational success as their inability to have the balance can lead to significant bad consequences. An empirical study was carried out to achieve three objectives: (1) to investigate whether the managerial level employees consider the balance between work life and family life as important; (2) to investigate the reasons for their perceptions; and (3) to investigate as to how the managers who work in the organization under the study maintain work-family balance. The qualitative method was adopted and one particular private company was selected for the study purpose. 15 managers who are married and having a family life were considered for the purpose of collecting data to achieve the research objectives. The interview technique was used along with a carefully prepared interview checklist in order to collect data. The findings reveal that to have work-family balance is very important because the life has a family aspect other than the work aspect; therefore there is a need of avoiding work-family conflicts. There are many ways of maintaining the balance between work-life and family life followed by the managers and they have been specifically mentioned in the study.

Managing Quantity or Quality? Students’ Voices for English Subject in the National Standardized Exam

The issue of quality is always a significant one and it will continue to be one of the predominant points of debate in education. Through a qualitative method, this study aimed to explore the experiences and the meaning that senior high school students faced in the national standardized exam for English subject. The data were collected by demographic background questionnaire and in-depth interviews with fifteen participants. The demographic data were analyzed descriptively, while the interviews were analyzed by within-case and cross-case analyses. The results of the data analysis revealed several themes such as cheating as bad consequences in the national standardized exam, it is like a yearly educational festival and formality, sharpening students memories, spending much money and time for English extra classes, dishonesty: spreading the key answer illegally, teachers more focus on the national exam, it is like a symbol of government power. Recommendations for taking some actions regarding the effect of the national standardized exam are offered.
