The problem of giftedness and talent has been attracting the attention of scientists and practitioners for a long period of time. Education and upbringing, peculiarities and difficulties of socialization, involvement in a variety of creative activities, support in educational, scientific, creative, sports activities, the ability to overcome various difficulties are the subject of research by many domestic and foreign authors. When considering the development of a gifted child, special attention is paid to all types of educational organizations where additional education teachers, educational psychologists, subject teachers ensure the participation of a gifted child in educational and extracurricular activities. The curriculum for the training of future teachers provides for academic disciplines and practices where students can form professional competencies. The purpose of the study is to identify the peculiarities of understanding giftedness and talent by students of pedagogical training areas of the Kostroma State University. Research methods: theoretical methods, including the analysis of the subject of research based on the study of scientific and methodological literature, as empirical methods, a survey of study participants was used. 102 students enrolled in bachelor's degree programs of the Kostroma State University (KSU, 2nd year) took part in the study. In our survey of 2nd year students, we revealed an understanding of the phenomenon of giftedness, the attitude of students to the peculiarities and difficulties of the development of gifted children, the readiness of students of pedagogical directions to work with this non-standard category, their perception of the phenomenon of talent, difficulties in the development of talented students.
