USE OF SPACE IMAGERY IN COMPILING EVALUATIVE AND FORECAST MAPS OF LAND USE

Space information is used to assess present and forecast future socioeconomic characteristics related to land use in the Sheki-Zakataly region, Azerbaijan SSR. Land use maps were compiled to clarify present conditions, which then provided a basis for evaluating possibilities for improvement and intensification of land use and for predicting possible land use trends given certain assumptions. Some problems with geosystem studies from aerospace experiment “gyunesh‐84”

Subsatellite experiment “Gyunesh‐84” carried out over the territory of the Azerbaijan SSR concentrates on the conditions of four types of geosystems which were selected as ground model sites to investigate typical natural and anthropogeneous processes such as soil humidification, salinization and soil erosion, deterioration of meadow vegetation under the effect of anthropogeneous factors and silting of artificial water reservoirs. On the basis of systematization of archive information and initial field data model representations were worked out which were specified as the experimental data were collected and interpreted. The results of scientific, methodical and practical problems solution are represented in detail for each geosystem.

Complex research at test sites by air and spaceborne means

This article deals with the development of one of the main problems of the Earth exploration from space, in general with planning and organization of complex aerospace experiments over test sites with the help of methods and original technique — subsatellite automatic information measuring systems created under the guidance of the author in the Scientific and Industrial Association for Space research of the Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences. Some results of methods and technique approval in real conditions with the participation of International crew of Salyut‐Soyuz on “Intercosmos” programme) confirm the validity of scientific‐methodical and technical problems.

Spring benthic macroinvertebrate communities of selected streams in the High Caucasus (Azerbaijan SSR)

Investigations on invertebrate fauna were carried out at fifteen sites in some chosen streams of the Caucasus (Azerbaijan SSR) in March 1970. Seventy-five taxa of invertebrates were found in the investigated streams. Chironomidae constituted the most numerous group at all sites, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Simuliidae being other important components of the fauna. On the basis of percentage structure of dominance in the examined streams four types of faunistic communities were distinguished. The most common one was the type characteristic of high mountain streams and rivers with Diamesa sp. (gr. latitarsis) predominant. Nevertheless, in springtime this community was characterized by a greater number of taxa and a greater abundance of specimens as compared with the summer period. It may be thus assumed that the spring period in high mountain streams and rivers is more conducive to the development of the invertebrate fauna.

Abstract A new distribution map is provided for Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus) [Lepidoptera: Noctuidae] Cabbage moth Highly polyphagous, attacking brassicas, peas and beans, onions potatoes and many other cultivated plants. Information is given on the geographical distribution in EUROPE, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, East Germany, West Hungary, Irish, Republic Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Yugoslavia, AFRICA, Canary Islands, Libya, ASIA, China, India, Iran, Korea, Lebanon, Mongolia, Pakistan, Syria, Taiwan, Turkey, USSR, Armenian SSR, Azerbaijan SSR, Byelorussian SSR, Georgian SSR, Kazakh SSR, Kirghiz SSR, Latvian SSR, Moldavian SSR, Russian SFSR, Ukrainian SSR.

A ring recovery of a lesser spotted Eagle <i>Aquila Pomarina </i>Brehm

During ringing operations in the Punda Milia area of the Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa, a Lesser Spotted Eagle, Aquila pomarina, Roberts Nr. 136, was caught by means of a bal-chatri trap at Magoane. The bird, an adult, had a mass of 1,26 kg, which appears light for its size; it was probably a male. It was fitted with a flanged ring of 16 mm diameter, No. 526-0727 at the time of capture - 29.11.1972, 08h00. A number ofconspecifics were observed in the area at the time. The eagle was recovered on 30.10.1973 and, as the ring was returned, it is presumed to be dead. The place of recovery was Azerbaijan SSR, near Kusary, U.S.S.R., co-ordinates 41 24'N, 48 27'E, which places it just north of the Caucasus Mountains and west of the Caspian Sea. It would appear that the eagle met its end shortly before or during migration, as the date of recovery given is only thirty days prior to the date on which the bird was ringed in the proceeding year.
