Collecting badges: Understanding the gold rush for business excellence awards

AbstractBusiness excellence awards (BEAs) have become all too commonplace. Entering and winning one has now become part of contemporary organising. However, scholarly work examining these awards remains scattered, with the dominant narrative focusing on what could even be described as the intense obsession with award ceremonies. In this paper, we articulate the mechanisms through which the dual demands for managing competitive pressures and achieving competitive advantage drive organisations to enter these awards. In doing this, we integrate and expand upon prior work to explicate an integrative framework for examining how the interactions between various contextual and environmental factors may induce organisations to enter BEAs and the potential outcomes, particularly for those who win or are shortlisted for these awards. We go on to present a set of propositions constituting a contribution, after which our study's implications for the theory and practice of BEAs are outlined.

This essay takes the form of a brief tribute to the life and work of Kamau Brathwaite and his first wife, Doris Brathwaite. It is written from the point of view of a writer who knew Kamau personally and who considers herself to be the beneficiary of his immense wisdom and iconoclasm. The essay provides anecdotal accounts of an awards ceremony in London, when Kamau delivered a powerful exhortation to Caribbean writers, and of a New Year’s Day party held at his house in Jamaica, at which Kamau and Doris demonstrated immense thoughtfulness to the assembled guests. It focuses briefly on X/Self, makes mention of the Zea Mexican Diary, and references Rex Nettleford and Philip Sherlock.

A MEMS Tactile Sensor with Fingerprint-Like Array of Contactors for High Resolution Visualization of Surface Distribution of Tactile Information We are pleased to announce that the 14th Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics Best Paper Award (JRM Best Paper Award 2021) has been decided by the JRM editorial committee. The following paper won the JRM Best Paper Award 2021, severely selected from among all 114 papers published in Vol.32 (2020). The Best Paper Award ceremony was held on December 22, 2021 in hybrid style (both on-site and online; venue: Gakushi-Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan), attended by the authors and JRM editorial committee members who took part in the selection process. The award winners were given certificates and a nearly US$1,000 honorarium. Editorial committee members who participated online also congratulated them through Zoom. We congratulate the winners and sincerely wish them success in the future. La presente contribución ofrece al lector en lengua castellana la posibilidad de leer –en su versión traducida al español– el discurso que Harold Pinter, el reconocido dramaturgo británico fallecido en 2008, compuso para su presentación “in absentia” ante la Real Academia Sueca en diciembre de 2005, con ocasión de la entrega que se le hizo del premio Nobel de Literatura el día siete de dicho mes y año. Se trata de un texto del que sólo encontraremos las traducciones al francés, sueco y alemán que acompañan al original inglés en la página web de la Fundación Nobel. Por eso esta traducción al español parece necesaria. El discurso de Pinter es un texto importante al que los lectores de lengua española también han de tener acceso por el interés de las ideas en él desarrolladas y por la valentía con que dichas ideas fueron expuestas a la luz pública.

“Tales from the Trail”: Oratory and Affect among Alaska Dog Mushers

Abstract This paper draws from linguistic anthropological and ethnographic fieldwork to illustrate the role of award ceremonies in maintaining and creating affective orientations toward rivalry among Alaska dog mushers. It focuses on award speeches given by dog mushers and others involved in the Alaska dog mushing community and reveals a “need for narrative” that has characterized sled dog racing since its origin as an (inter)national sport. Mushing “stories” are constitutive of public talk about wins and losses in the sport, as well as about race events that take place far from view on distant trails. Specifically, “accounts,” a humorous narrative genre that pivots upon unpredictable “instinct-driven” characteristics of canine athletes, serve as an important idiom for evoking chance in describing wins and losses. The performance and appreciation of these narratives constitute the intangible heritage of Alaska dog mushers, and accounts emerge as a semiotic resource for negotiating and downplaying rivalry through orchestration of embodied intersubjective sentiments, i.e. affect.

Srpski pisci i djela u ogledima Jovana Radulovića

The paper deals with Jovan Radulović’s (1951‒2010) essays, dedicated to selected Serbian writers and to some important individuals from the Serbian past, mostly from Dalmatia, Radulović’s homeland. The focus is put on the texts about Stojan Janković (Mitrović), Gerasim Zelić, Simo Matavulj, Sava Bjelanović, Mirko Korolija, Marija Ilić- Agapova, Vladan Desnica, which were mostly written as prefaces for editions of their works or given as speeches on the occasion of certain anniversaries, as well as on the occa- sion of prestigious literary awards ceremonies (“Bora Stanković”, “Petar Kočić”, “Branko Ćopić”, “Golden Sunflower” awards). The analyzed texts reveal deep poetic connections of Radulović’s work with the ones of the writers in question, as well as his ability to, us- ing short forms, such as essays, highlight the essential artistic and poetic characteristics of their works.

An investigation of the market's pricing of auditor competence: Evidence from PwC's Oscars blunder

On Sunday, February 26, 2017, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) erred on live television when Brian Cullinan, PwC's U.S. Board Chairman and Managing Partner of PwC's Southwest region, handed the announcers the wrong envelope for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony (hereafter, the Oscars). Cullinan's blunder represented a clear lack of competence in a non-audit service (NAS) context. Building on prior brand extension research, we hypothesize that market participants transfer their assessment of Cullinan's Oscars ceremony (i.e., NAS) incompetence to the financial statement audit competence of PwC's publicly traded audit clients. Consistent with this prediction, we find that abnormal returns in the days following the error are significantly lower for PwC clients in the region Cullinan managed, suggesting an impaired reputation for audit quality. However, losses experienced by PwC clients were restored within a month after the blunder, suggesting the durability of PwC's reputation in overcoming the initial impairment. Taken together, our evidence suggests that investors find the disclosure of audit partner identity to be informative.

Selling ‘Czechness’ abroad: images of Jan and Zdeněk Svěrák in promotion and reception of Kolya

In this article I argue that debates about Kolya (1996) and the images of its two authors Jan and Zdeněk Svěrák that were circulating in the media at the time of its release reveal several hopes and anxieties about Czech national cinema’s coming to terms with the effects of post-communist transition. I will analyse interpretations and discourses about the film circulating primarily in Czech press. The aim is to look at how the talk about Kolya developed as several discourses and interpretative strategies were introduced in different attempts to make sense of the film. The time frame I focus on here starts before the film’s release and reaches until the coverage of the Academy Awards ceremony in 1997 where the film received an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film. I argue that in this timespan, the film’s value was negotiated and contested prominently along a set of two references – the ‘truthfulness’ of the Czechness it represents, and the importance of international recognition for Czech cinema. I analyse these discourses in the context of changing conditions in Czech cinema after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

ACM SIGEVO best dissertation award 2021

The SIGEVO Best Dissertation Award was created in 2019 to recognize excellent thesis research by doctoral candidates in the field of evolutionary computing. Doctoral dissertation awards are also given by other Special Interest Groups of ACM, such as SIGCOMM, SIGKDD, SIGARCH and others. The SIGEVO Best Dissertation Award is given annually to a maximum of 1 winner and a maximum of 2 honorable mentions. The award presentation takes place at the awards ceremony of GECCO. The award carries a monetary value of $1,000 contributed by SIGEVO to be awarded to the winner. The award winner and honorable mentions each receive a plaque.
