20th Biennial Conference of the International Planning History Society 2–5 July 2024 (Hong Kong) prizes and awards

ABSTRACT The winners of the IPHS 2024 Prize and Awards were announced at the Awards Ceremony at the Hong Kong Conference on 4 July 2024. This year, the recipients include the Planning Perspectives Prize, IPHS Book Prizes, Anthony Sutcliffe Dissertation Award, IPHS Best Postgraduate Planning History Paper Prize, Sir Peter Hall Award for Lifetime Achievement, the East Asia Planning History (EAPH) Prize, and IPHS Professional Commendation Award. However, the Koos Bosma Prize in Planning History Innovation was not awarded as no submission met the criteria. The Judging Panel Reports provide additional information and commendations.

Can a Viral Blunder Damage Auditor Brand Name Reputation? Evidence From Envelopegate

“Envelopegate” is a term used to describe PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC)’s service failure that occurred during the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony (“the Oscars”). For PwC, the error resulted in immediate and unprecedented negative publicity, which was driven by a viral response on social media and other online media platforms. Thus, Envelopegate offers a unique opportunity to observe the potential spillover effects of negative viral events on the brand name reputation of an audit firm. Using intraday and daily client stock returns, we find a significant negative market response for PwC audit clients within the first minute of trading on the day following Envelopegate. The negative market effect is driven by clients with higher demand for auditor reputation, but we find no evidence that results are driven by any specific audit market region. Thus, our research underscores the susceptibility of an audit firm’s brand value to negative viral events, even when the event is unrelated to audit services. The findings of this study should be of interest to scholars exploring how audit firms form and maintain reputations as well as to professional service firms that engage in highly visible client services as part of their strategic efforts to enhance brand value.

2025 Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering Award—Call for Nominations

Abstract IUPAC announces the call for nominations for the IUPAC 2025 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering Awards. The purpose of the awards program, initiated as part of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry celebrations, is to acknowledge and promote the work of women in chemistry/chemical engineering worldwide. In 2011, 23 women were honored during a ceremony held at the IUPAC Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 2 August 2011. At each of the subsequent IUPAC Congresses, 12 women received this recognition; in Istanbul in 2013, in Busan, Korea in 2015, in Sao Paulo in 2017, in Paris in 2019, virtually in 2021, and in The Hague in 2023. A similar award ceremony will take place during the 2025 IUPAC Congress in July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Controversy as Currency: An Investigation into the Economy and Politics of Literary Prizes

Literary prizes, while providing legitimacy of artistic excellence to authors, are delicately poised in modern prize culture. They must maintain a balance between the artistic merit of literature and the health of the economic capital of the publishing industry and sponsors. This paper meticulously examines the myriad proliferation of literary prizes and the convergence of its intricacies— the process of nomination and selection, sponsorships, promotion, media coverage of the award ceremony, celebratory nature of the occasion, the climactic drama of acceptance speech, and controversy— to characterize the centrality of economic force at play. It reflects the dependency of art form’s flourishing and sustenance on the logic of the economic marketplace. Through a close analysis of the controversial selection of certain authors and particular books, the paper looks at the epiphenomena of prestigious literary prizes to demonstrate a classic working of the neoliberal market outcome of controversy as publicity/currency, which not only brings about manufacturing of aura for controversial writers as celebrities but simultaneously radiates its effect on the demand value of their literary products and investing participants. It concludes that centrifugal dissemination and consumption of mediatised controversy events across national and international borders generates a centripetal concentration of socio-economic capital for writers, publishers and sponsors.

Looking back on 51years of the Carol Nachman Prize in Rheumatology-significance for the field of spondyloarthritis research.

The city and casino of Wiesbaden, capital of the German state Hessen, have endowed the Carol Nachman Prize to promote research work in the field of rheumatology since 1972. The prize, endowed with 37,500 €, is the second highest medical award in Germany and serves to promote clinical, therapeutic, and experimental research work in the field of rheumatology. In June 2022, the 50-year anniversary was celebrated. In the symposium preceding the award ceremony, an overview was given on the significance of spondyloarthritis for the work of the awardees in the past 30years. This overview has now been put together to inform the interested community of the work performed, including the opinion of the awardees regarding what they consider to be their most important contribution.

Mark Meerovich Prize: Understanding the truth

The award was established in honour of the famous Soviet and Russian architectural historian and architect, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Doctor of Architecture, Professor, Honoured Architect of Russia, Irkutsk resident, who loved and defended his hometown, Mark Grigorievich Meerovich (1956-2018). The award was presented in Irkutsk for the third time. The article describes the history and content of the award, as well as reveals the expanded format of the award ceremony. The nominees of the year 2023, N. Krasnaya (Master nomination) and Ya. Lisitsina (Expert nomination), are announced.

A Tale of Two Laureates

Abstract Focusing on the reception of the two Nobel laureates Nadine Gordimer and J.M. Coetzee, this article investigates the literature prize as a national, and indeed Stockholm-based, phenomenon in Sweden. It makes two general claims. The first is that the press exercises a co-consecrating authority that both rivals and depends on the authority of the Swedish Academy. This becomes evident not least in occasional attempts by critics to deconsecrate a laureate. The second claim is that the dramaturgy of the literature prize, beginning with the announcement in October and ending with the award ceremony in December, culminates shortly before the ceremony with the Nobel lecture, when the laureate is heard in their own voice. In an analysis of Gordimer’s and Coetzee’s lectures, the article concludes that they present sharply different attempts at performatively resolving the tension between literary autonomy and heteronomy.

We are pleased to announce that the 16th Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics Best Paper Award (JRM Best Paper Award 2023) has been decided by the JRM editorial committee. The following paper won the JRM Best Paper Award 2023, severely selected from among all 113 papers published in Vol.34 (2022). The Best Paper Award ceremony was held on December 26, 2023 in hybrid style (both on-site and online; venue: Gakushi-Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan), attended by the authors and JRM editorial committee members who took part in the selection process. The award winners were given certificates and a JPY100,000 honorarium. Editorial committee members who participated online also congratulated them through Zoom. We congratulate the winners and sincerely wish them success in the future. Recognition at the corporate celebration of Christmas: Freezing the postsocialist gender regime

This article critically examines the perpetuation of gender regimes within postsocialist Europe by analyzing how organizational recognition is performed as part of the corporate celebration of Christmas. A critical ethnography was conducted at a male-dominated company in postsocialist Hungary. The article’s findings align with three corporate Christmas scenes: the company owner’s speech, an award ceremony for families, and an award ceremony for the best employee. This study contributes to critical organization studies by advancing an understanding of the postsocialist gender regime and those ideological forms of recognition that invisibly reproduce it through the seemingly innocent practices of Christmas celebrations. Furthermore, by providing a critical reconceptualization of workplace familism as an ideology, it is argued that it is a central and distinctive element of the gendered subtext of this particular postsocialist gender regime. Ultimately, three different and ritualized forms of pathological recognition (misrecognition, overidentification and reification) are identified, claiming to be constitutive of individual gender identity regulation and extending socioideological control beyond the boundaries of the organization.

Nobelova cena za literaturu pro Jaroslava Seiferta: pohled ze Švédska

The central concern of this article is the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Jaroslav Seifert in 1984. The paper focuses on the Swedish Academyʼs motivation for the award, on the official award ceremony and banquet, as well as on other related events. It presents translations of Seifertʼs poetry and other texts into Swedish from the 1960s until the mid-1980s as well as the foremost mediators and translators of his work. The reception of Jaroslav Seifertʼs works published in Swedish is monitored through numerous reviews in the Swedish press. Attention is further given to the standpoint of the Czechoslovakian Embassy, which has been documented in a preserved secret report of Jan Kroupa.

Move Analysis of Awards Acceptance Speeches in The 22nd Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Ceremony

It has become a tradition that any musician who wins an award delivers a speech to acknowledge those who contributed to the award’s success. This has led to the emergence of Awards Acceptance Speeches (AASs). Despite the recent popularity of genre analysis on professional genres, AASs as a genre, have not been researched, especially in the Ghanaian context. To this end, this paper sought to examine the generic structure of the AASs of Ghanaian musicians in the 22nd Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Ceremony. 20 AASs were sampled for the study. The study adopted Swales’ (1990) approach to move analysis, focusing on the generic structure. The analysis revealed that Thanking move was the most frequent. A 6 move-structure was identified. The study concluded with implications for successful acculturation of musicians and other entertainment industry players in their discourse communities and recommendations for further studies.
