Infectious Laryngotracheitis Virus and Avian Metapneumovirus: A Comprehensive Review

Respiratory avian viral diseases significantly impact the world poultry sector, leading to notable economic losses. The highly contagious DNA virus, infectious laryngotracheitis virus, and the RNA virus, avian metapneumovirus, are well known for their prevalent effects on avian respiratory systems. The infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), stemming from the Herpesviridae family, manifests as an upper respiratory disease within birds. Characterized by acute respiratory signs, it sporadically emerges worldwide, presenting a persistent threat to poultry health. Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), belonging to the Pneumoviridae family is identified as the cause behind severe rhinotracheitis in turkeys and swollen head syndrome in chickens. This disease can lead to heightened mortality rates, especially when coupled with secondary bacterial infections. This review offers a comprehensive analysis and understanding of the general properties of these specific avian respiratory viruses, control measures, and their global status.

MicroRNA as an Important Mediator in the Regulation of Male Gallus gallus domesticus Reproduction: Current State of the Problem.

During all periods of male ontogenesis, physiological processes responsible for the correct functioning of reproductive organs and spermatogenesis are under the influence of various factors (neuro-humoral, genetic, and paratypical). Recently, the attention of researchers has increasingly turned to the study of epigenetic factors. In scientific publications, one can increasingly find references to the direct role of microRNAs, small non-coding RNAs involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, in the processes of development and functioning of reproductive organs. Although the role of microRNAs in the reproduction of mammals, including humans, has been intensively studied, this area of knowledge in birds remains under-researched and limited to single experiments. This is likely due to the unique features of embryogenesis and the structure of the avian reproductive system. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on the role of microRNAs in avian reproduction. Insight into the molecular basis of spermatogenesis in Gallus gallus domesticus is provided. Data on the functions and mechanisms by which microRNAs influence the processes of growth, development, and formation of rooster germ cells that determine the necessary morphofunctional qualitative characteristics of mature spermatozoa are summarized. Particular attention is paid to miRNA biogenesis as an important step affecting the success of spermatogenesis, as well as the role of miRNAs in avian sex differentiation during early embryogenesis. The modern literature sources systematized in this review, revealing the questions about the role of miRNAs in the reproductive function of birds, create a theoretical basis and define new perspectives and directions for further research in this field.

Effects of acoustic signals on the breeding success of the tropical weaver bird, ploceus philippinus (l)

In the animal kingdom, vocal communication is the most important way of conveying information among individuals of the same species. The avian communication system is one of the most complex communication systems, not only for claiming territory, lookingfor food, alarming against predators, and calling their young ones but also playing a major role in modulating breeding activities. The study was conducted on the Baya weaver bird, a colonial breeder, to explore the collective efficacy and effects of vocal signals on breeding individuals which has a greater impact on their breeding success. The weaver bird is a seasonal breeder, keeping in flocks and breeding in colonies. It exhibits sexual bimatuarism and dichromatism. The adult male weaver weaves the nest and performs spectacular courtship displays like wing quivering, nest pointing, nest greeting, chasing in and around the nesting colony, and delivering songs. The Oscillograph analysis of different call notes shows that certain vocal signals are delivered only during breeding season suggesting that these songs have a modulating effect on the breeding success.. Model of the HVC neural network as a song motor in zebra finch.

The nucleus HVC within the avian song system produces crystalized instructions which lead to precise, learned vocalization in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). This paper proposes a model of the HVC neural network based on the physiological properties of individual HVC neurons, their synaptic interactions calibrated by experimental measurements, as well as the synaptic signal into this region which triggers song production. This neural network model comprises of two major neural populations in this area: neurons projecting to the nucleus RA and interneurons. Each single neuron model of HVCRA is constructed with conductance-based ion currents of fast Na+ and K+ and a leak channel, while the interneuron model includes extra transient Ca2+ current and hyperpolarization-activated inward current. The synaptic dynamics is formed with simulated delivered neurotransmitter pulses from presynaptic cells and neurotransmitter receptor opening rates of postsynaptic neurons. We show that this network model qualitatively exhibits observed electrophysiological behaviors of neurons independent or in the network, as well as the importance of bidirectional interactions between the HVCRA neuron and the HVCI neuron. We also simulate the pulse input from A11 neuron group to HVC. This signal successfully suppresses the interneuron, which leads to sequential firing of projection neurons that matches measured burst onset, duration, and spike quantities during the zebra finch motif. The result provides a biophysically based model characterizing the dynamics and functions of the HVC neural network as a song motor, and offers a reference for synaptic coupling strength in the avian brain.

Haemoparasite infection risk in multi-host avian system: an integrated analysis.

Avian blood parasites play a crucial role in wildlife health and ecosystem dynamics, exhibiting heterogeneous spatial distribution influenced by various factors. Although factors underlying heterogeneity in infection with blood parasites have been explored in many avian hosts, their importance in the context of host species and the parasite taxon remains poorly understood, particularly in cohabiting host species. Using next-generation sequencing for parasite screening, we investigate the association between Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma infections in relation to individual parameters, host densities and landscape features in 3 cavity-nesting passerines: great tit (Parus major), blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) in a highly fragmented forest habitat. Overall, Haemoproteus infections predominated, followed by Plasmodium and Trypanosoma, with great tits most and collared flycatchers least parasitized. There were no common patterns across host species in the probability of infection with locally transmitted parasites from each genus. Specifically, in all cases, the effect of particular parameters, if present, was observed only in 1 host species. Body condition influenced Haemoproteus and Plasmodium infections differently in tits. Host density, whether own species or all pooled, explained Haemoproteus infections in great tits and collared flycatchers, and Plasmodium in great tits. Landscape metrics, such as moisture index and distance to coast edge and pastures, affected infection probability in specific host–parasite combinations. Relative risk maps revealed infection risk gradients, but spatial variation repeatability over time was low. Our study highlights the complex dynamics of avian blood parasites in multi-host systems, shedding light on host–parasite interactions in natural ecosystems.

Effects of 1-Deoxynojirimycin Extracts of Mulberry Leaves on Oxidative Stress and the Function of the Intestinal Tract in Broilers Induced by H2O2.

The poultry industry struggles with oxidative stress affecting gut health and productivity. This study examined using 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) extracts from mulberry leaves as an antioxidant in broilers feed to combat this issue. We divided 240 broilers, aged 16 days, into six groups, including a control and groups exposed to oxidative stress through H2O2 injections, with different supplement levels of DNJ-E (40, 80, 120, and 160 mg/kg of the basal diet) lasting until the broilers reached 42 days old. We evaluated intestinal morphology, ultrastructure, oxidative stress markers, the tight junction, and inflammatory cytokines. Adding 40 mg/kg DNJ-E improved villus height, the villus-to-crypt ratio, and cellular ultrastructure, and increased SOD levels in the jejunum and ileum, as well as CAT levels in the duodenum and jejunum (p < 0.05), compared to the H2O2 group. The addition of DNJ had differential effects on oxidative stress, the intestinal barrier, and immune-related genes. Importantly, the dosages of 40 mg/kg and 80 mg/kg resulted in an upregulation of MUC2 mRNA expression (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that DNJ-E holds potential as a beneficial feed additive for enhancing broiler health, particularly at supplementation levels below 80 mg/kg, as higher concentrations may negatively influence intestinal health. Future investigations should aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms through which DNJ-E operates within the avian gastrointestinal system.

Climate and ecology predict latitudinal trends in sexual selection inferred from avian mating systems.

Sexual selection, one of the central pillars of evolutionary theory, has powerful effects on organismal morphology, behaviour, and population dynamics. However, current knowledge about geographical variation in this evolutionary mechanism and its underlying drivers remains highly incomplete, in part because standardised data on the strength of sexual selection is sparse even for well-studied organisms. Here, we use information on mating systems-including the incidence of polygamy and extra-pair paternity-to estimate the intensity of sexual selection in 10,671 (>99.9%) bird species distributed worldwide. We show that avian sexual selection varies latitudinally, peaking at higher latitudes, although the gradient is reversed in the world's most sexually selected birds-specialist frugivores-which are strongly associated with tropical forests. Phylogenetic models further reveal that the strength of sexual selection is explained by temperature seasonality coupled with a suite of climate-associated factors, including migration, diet, and territoriality. Overall, these analyses suggest that climatic conditions leading to short, intense breeding seasons, or highly abundant and patchy food resources, increase the potential for polygamy in birds, driving latitudinal gradients in sexual selection. Our findings help to resolve longstanding debates about spatial variation in evolutionary mechanisms linked to reproductive biology and also provide a comprehensive species-level data set for further studies of selection and phenotypic evolution in the context of global climatic change.

Fresh insights into the light‐induced pineal gland circadian rhythm transmission mechanism derived from mRNA and miRNA profiling

AbstractThe circadian clock significantly impacts animal health and productivity, with light playing a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms. However, the mechanisms behind light‐induced circadian transmission remain unclear, particularly in light‐sensitive avian species. The pineal gland is a key component acting as the photosensitive master oscillator in the avian clock system. Using transcriptome sequencing and small RNA sequencing technologies, we identified circadian genes and miRNAs in the chick pineal gland under light–dark and sudden constant‐light conditions. We observed rhythmic oscillations in up to 1299 genes during the light–dark cycle, with 400 genes maintaining rhythms under constant light. Our findings highlight the light‐sensitive temporal organization in birds as the phase distribution of circadian genes in the pineal gland correlates with light exposure changes. A novel regulatory mechanism involving light, cyclic adenosine monophosphate, cyclic guanosine monophosphate, light‐sensitive miRNAs, such as gga‐miR‐34b‐5p, and light‐sensitive circadian genes, such as CRY2, was discovered to participate in the light input system of the chick pineal clock, through which light regulates the oscillators and outputs of the circadian clock system. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, and Oil Red O staining revealed cyclic changes in lipid synthesis and metabolism throughout the circadian day, which may be a key mechanism through which the circadian clock influences pineal physiology. Our results enhance the understanding of light‐induced circadian transmission mechanisms and identify potential targets for optimizing the circadian clock through light.

The avian vocal system: 3D reconstruction reveals upper vocal tract elongation during head motion.

While the impressive singing abilities of birds are made possible by the syrinx, the upper vocal system (i.e. trachea, larynx and beak) could also play a role in sound filtration. Yet, we still lack a clear understanding of the range of elongation this system can undertake, especially along the trachea. Here, we used biplanar cineradiography and X-ray reconstruction of moving morphology (XROMM) to record 15 species of cadaveric birds from 9 different orders while an operator moved the birds' heads in different directions. In all studied species, we found elongation of the trachea to be correlated with neck extension, and significantly greater (ranging from 18 to 48% for the whole motion; and from 1.4 to 15.7% for the singing positions) than previously reported on a live singing bird (3%). This elongation or compression was not always homogeneous along its entire length. Some specimens showed increased lengthening in the rostral part and others in both the rostral and caudal parts of the vocal tract. The diversity of elongation patterns shows that trachea elongation is more complex than previously thought. Since tracheal lengthening affects sound frequencies, our results contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms involved in complex communication signals, one of the amazing traits we share with birds.

Variation in air sac morphology and postcranial skeletal pneumatization patterns in the African grey parrot.

The anatomy of the avian lower respiratory system includes a complex interaction between air-filled pulmonary tissues, pulmonary air sacs, and much of the postcranial skeleton. Hypotheses related to the function and phylogenetic provenance of these respiratory structures have been posed based on extensive interspecific descriptions for an array of taxa. By contrast, intraspecific descriptions of anatomical variation for these features are much more limited, particularly for skeletal pneumatization, and are essential to establish a baseline for evaluating interspecific variation. To address this issue, we collected micro-computed tomography (μCT) scans of live and deceased African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) to assess variation in the arrangement of the lungs, the air sacs, and their respective invasion of the postcranial skeleton via pneumatic foramina. Analysis reveals that the two pairs of caudalmost air sacs vary in size and arrangement, often exhibiting an asymmetric morphology. Further, locations of the pneumatic foramina are more variable for midline, non-costal skeletal elements when compared to other pneumatized bones. These findings indicate a need to better understand contributing factors to variation in avian postcranial respiratory anatomy that can inform future intraspecific and interspecific comparisons.

Comparative analysis of changes in immune cell in the chicken spleen across different ages using flow cytometry

BackgroundConcurrent emerging and reemerging avian infectious diseases cause multiple risk factors in poultry. A body amount studies attempted to understand pathogen-associated immunity in chickens. Recent research has made progress in identifying immune functions in chicken, there are still gaps in knowledge, especially regarding immune responses during infectious diseases. A deeper understanding in chicken immune system is critical for improving disease control strategies and vaccine development.ResultsThis study proposes analytical method for chicken splenocytes, enabling the tracking changes in T cells, monocytes, and B cells across three ages. Optimized lymphocyte-activating conditions were suggested using concanavalin A and chicken interleikin-2, which facilitate immune cell activation and proliferation. Next, splenocytes from embryonic day 18, day 5, and day 30 were compared using surface markers and flow cytometry analysis. We observed an increase in T cell subsets, including activated T cells (CD4+CD44+ and CD8+CD44+), and B cells, along with a reduced monocyte population after hatching. However, morphological changes and genetic expression of functional immune molecules were limited.ConclusionsThe present findings on chicken immune system development offer valuable insights into the avian immune system, including analytical methods and the phenotypic and functional changes in immune cells. Updated immune-boosting strategies during the early stages of life are crucial for developing preventive measures against major infectious diseases in the poultry industry.

Financial impact of low pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H9N2 on commercial broiler chicken and egg layer production systems in Pakistan

Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) subtype H9N2 is endemic in Pakistan and impacts poultry farming through disease related mortality, poor weight gain and reduced egg production. This study aims to estimate the farm-level financial impact of LPAI H9N2 infection on commercial broiler and layer production systems in Pakistan.A questionnaire based cross-sectional survey of 138 broiler farms and 136 layer farms in Pakistan was conducted in 2019. Primary data collected by cross-sectional survey along with expert opinion and published literature were used to parameterize five stochastic production and gross margin models for three broiler and two layer production systems: fully integrated production (FIP), partially integrated production (PIP) and independent farming production (IP) systems. Partial budget analysis were then carried out to estimate the financial impact of LPAI H9N2.Results indicate that in broiler production systems, starting with 35,000 day old chicks (DOC) per batch, the net cost of disease (million PKR/production cycle) was estimated at 4.10 (14,862 USD), 4.62 (16,747 USD) and 2.46 (8917 USD) for IP, PIP and FIP systems, respectively. The disease produced a negative gross margin (defined here as revenue minus replacement and variable costs) in IP (-53 PKR (-0.19 USD)/DOC bought) and PI (-25 PKR (-0.091 USD)/DOC bought) systems, while remained positive for FIP systems (87 PKR (0.32 USD)/DOC bought). For layer production systems, (mean flock size as 48,000 DOCs) the net cost (million PKR/production cycle) was 29.75 (107,095.21 USD) and 29.51 (106,223.45 USD) IP and PIP systems, respectively, and produced negative gross margin in both systems.The outcomes of the study highlight the vulnerability of independent and partially integrated production systems to the disease. These findings also offer a decision-making tool to the farmers and policy makers to evaluate avian influenza surveillance systems and control interventions in Pakistan.

Social environment influences microbiota and potentially pathogenic bacterial communities on the skin of developing birds

BackgroundAnimal bacterial symbionts are established early in life, either through vertical transmission and/or by horizontal transmission from both the physical and the social environment, such as direct contact with con- or heterospecifics. The social environment particularly can influence the acquisition of both mutualistic and pathogenic bacteria, with consequences for the stability of symbiotic communities. However, segregating the effects of the shared physical environment from those of the social interactions is challenging, limiting our current knowledge on the role of the social environment in structuring bacterial communities in wild animals. Here, we take advantage of the avian brood-parasite system of Eurasian magpies (Pica pica) and great spotted cuckoos (Clamator glandarius) to explore how the interspecific social environment (magpie nestlings developing with or without heterospecifics) affects bacterial communities on uropygial gland skin.ResultsWe demonstrated interspecific differences in bacterial community compositions in members of the two species when growing up in monospecific nests. However, the bacterial community of magpies in heterospecific nests was richer, more diverse, and more similar to their cuckoo nest-mates than when growing up in monospecific nests. These patterns were alike for the subset of microbes that could be considered core, but when looking at the subset of potentially pathogenic bacterial genera, cuckoo presence reduced the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic bacterial genera on magpies.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the role of social interactions in shaping the assembly of the avian skin bacterial communities during the nestling period, as exemplified in a brood parasite—host system.

Co-exposure of polyvinyl chloride microplastics with cadmium promotes nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in female ducks through oxidative stress and glycolipid accumulation

A recently discovered environmental contaminant, microplastics (MPs) are capable of amassing within the body and pose a grave threat to the health of both humans and animals. It is widely acknowledged that the combination of cadmium (Cd), a hazardous heavy metal, and microplastics produces synergistic deleterious effects. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which co-exposure to polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) and Cd damages the liver of avian females is unknown. Globally prevalent and the subject of extensive research in mammals, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver condition. However, the mechanisms underlying injury to the avian digestive system caused by NAFLD remain unknown. Two months of co-exposure to Cd and PVC-MPs, pure water, solitary Cd exposure, single microplastics exposure, and pure water were administered to female Muscovy ducks in this study. The objective of this research was to examine whether the co-exposure of duck liver to PVC-MPs and Cd-induced oxidative stress resulted in NAFLD and subsequent apoptosis of hepatic cells. The study's findings showed that hepatocyte shape and functional activity were negatively impacted by PVC-MP and Cd buildup in liver tissues. Reduced liver organ coefficients, increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) content, and ultrastructural damage to hepatocyte nuclei and mitochondria are indicators of this. These results point to a possible impairment in liver function. phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 (PCK1) deficiency activates the protein kinase B/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K/AKT) pathway in the livers of female reproductive ducks that have been damaged by oxidative stress. This stimulation induces lipid deposition, fibrosis, and glycogen accumulation, which ultimately results in hepatocyte apoptosis. In summary, our research provides evidence that PVC-MPs cause oxidative harm to the liver, which subsequently results in fibrosis of liver tissue, hepatic glucolipid metabolism, and ultimately apoptosis.

Multiple plumage color signals associated with courtship displays may represent body quality in male golden pheasants (Chrysolophus pictus)

Many animals display numerous colors that can range from red, green, blue, and orange to ultraviolet, whereas others are dull or have a uniform coloration. The reason for this variation in coloration remains unknown. It has been hypothesized that different colors represent multiple signals that either reflect different components, redundant information, or simply no longer provide reliable information regarding body quality. Here, we analyzed the highly diverse coloration of male golden pheasants ( Chrysolophus pictus) using an avian visual model from the avian visual system and related the different components of coloration to several phenotypic traits of body quality. We found that different components of plumage color correlated with the length of the body, tail, spur, and beak, suggesting that the multiple colors in male golden pheasants signal different components of body quality. In particular, tail length was correlated with many aspects of coloration, especially the green and orange colors of neck plumage, which are particularly important because male golden pheasants spread their neck plumage and show it to females during their courtship display. Therefore, these findings reveal that the plumage colors of male golden pheasants encode multiple signals that reflect their body condition during courtship displays.

Early Development of the Thalamo-Pallial Stage of the Tectofugal Visual Pathway in the Chicken (Gallus gallus).

The tectofugal pathway is a highly conserved visual pathway in all amniotes. In birds and mammals, retinorecipient neurons located in the midbrain roof (optic tectum/superior colliculus) are the source of ascending projections to thalamic relays (nucleus rotundus/caudal pulvinar), which in turn project to specific pallial regions (visual dorsal ventricular ridge [vDVR]/temporal cortex) organized according to a columnar recurrent arrangement of interlaminar circuits. Whether or to which extent these striking hodological correspondences arise from comparable developmental processes is at present an open question, mainly due to the scarcity of data about the ontogeny of the avian tectofugal system. Most of the previous developmental studies of this system in birds have focused on the establishment of the retino-tecto-thalamic connectivity, overlooking the development of the thalamo-pallial-intrapallial circuit. In this work, we studied the latter in chicken embryos by means of immunohistochemical assays and precise ex vivo crystalline injections of biocytin and DiI. We found that the layered organization of the vDVR as well as the system of homotopic reciprocal connections between vDVR layers were present as early as E8. A highly organized thalamo-vDVR projection was also present at this stage. Our immunohistochemical assays suggest that both systems of projections emerge simultaneously even earlier. Combined with previous findings, these results reveal that, in striking contrast with mammals, the peripheral and central stages of the avian tectofugal pathway develop along different timelines, with a tecto-thalamo-intrapallial organization arising before and possibly independently of the retino-isthmo-tectal circuit.

Circulating profile of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin during moult-fast and chick provisioning in southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome)

A multitude of animal species undergo prolonged fasting events at regularly occurring life history stages. During such periods of food deprivation, individuals need to suppress their appetite. The satiety signalling gut hormone ghrelin has received much attention in this context in studies looking at mammalian systems. In wild birds, however, knowledge on the ghrelin system and its role during extended fasts is still scarce. In this study, we collected plasma samples for measurements of circulating ghrelin concentrations from adult southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) during the three to four week-long moult-fast that they repeat annually to replace their feathers. We further sampled chicks before and after feeding bouts and non-moulting adults. Circulating ghrelin levels did not differ significantly between fed and unfed chicks but chicks had significantly lower plasma ghrelin levels compared to adults. Furthermore, penguins in late moult (i.e. individuals at the end of the prolonged fasting bout) had higher ghrelin levels compared to non-moulting adults. Our results show elevated levels of circulating ghrelin during moult and generally lower levels of ghrelin in chicks than in adults regardless of feeding state. Given the scarcity or absence of knowledge on the function of ghrelin in seabirds and in fasting birds in general, our results add greatly to our understanding of the avian ghrelin system.

Float, fly, then sink: wetland plant seed buoyancy is lost after internal dispersal by waterbirds

Seed dispersal distance is an important indicator of how well a plant species can cope with environmental changes. Seeds of wetland plants are primarily dispersed by hydrochory (floating on the water surface) or endozoochory (ingestion and egestion by animals). However, both mechanisms can also be combined (diplochory), which increases dispersal distances. In wetlands, seeds often float on the water surface before ingestion and transport by animals, such as waterbirds. Here, we consider what happens next after endozoochory and test whether seeds dispersed inside waterbirds can then continue to disperse by hydrochory. We experimentally assessed the buoyancy capacity of 41 wetland plant species for 14 weeks before and after simulated passage through avian digestive systems. This revealed that (1) seeds of plants previously assigned a hydrochory dispersal syndrome floated longer than those from other syndromes, but with considerable overlap; (2) fully aquatic and shoreline plant species had seeds with stronger buoyancy than terrestrial plants; and (3) digestive processes negatively affected seed buoyancy capacity for all plant species, which included wetland species with a typical hydrochory syndrome. The capacity for hydrochory is more limited after endozoochory than beforehand, with strong implications for the effectiveness of seed dispersal.

Digest: How environmental light conditions shape the evolution of visual systems in birds.

How do varying environmental light conditions influence the evolution of avian visual systems? Fröhlich et al. (2024) demonstrate that nocturnal birds evolved broader corneas and slightly longer axial lengths than their diurnal counterparts, increasing light capture efficiency. Nocturnal species also tended to maintain or reduce the size of brain regions responsible for vision, i.e., the optic tectum and the visual wulst. These results highlight adaptive trends in nocturnal species, where evolutionary improvement in low-light performance of eyes may be accompanied by compromised brain function.

Avian eye-inspired perovskite artificial vision system for foveated and multispectral imaging.

Avian eyes have deep central foveae as a result of extensive evolution. Deep foveae efficiently refract incident light, creating a magnified image of the target object and making it easier to track object motion. These features are essential for detecting and tracking remote objects in dynamic environments. Furthermore, avian eyes respond to a wide spectrum of light, including visible and ultraviolet light, allowing them to efficiently distinguish the target object from complex backgrounds. Despite notable advances in artificial vision systems that mimic animal vision, the exceptional object detection and targeting capabilities of avian eyes via foveated and multispectral imaging remain underexplored. Here, we present an artificial vision system that capitalizes on these aspects of avian vision. We introduce an artificial fovea and vertically stacked perovskite photodetector arrays whose designs were optimized by theoretical simulations for the demonstration of foveated and multispectral imaging. The artificial vision system successfully identifies colored and mixed-color objects and detects remote objects through foveated imaging. The potential for use in uncrewed aerial vehicles that need to detect, track, and recognize distant targets in dynamic environments is also discussed. Our avian eye-inspired perovskite artificial vision system marks a notable advance in bioinspired artificial visions.
