Chemical composition, mutagenicity, and cytotoxicity of urban submicron particulate matter (PM1) in Agra, India

This study, conducted in Agra, India, examined the mass concentrations, chemical compositions, and seasonal variations of submicron particles (PM1). The concentrations of metals, water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIs) including anions (F−, Cl−, NO₃−, SO₄2−) and cations (Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, NH₄+, Na+), organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM1 extract were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Ion Chromatography, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) respectively. For morphological observation of PM1 particles, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometry (FESEM-EDS) was used. The annual average concentration of PM1 was 82.9 ± 33.4 μg/m3, which exceeds the World Health Organisation's (WHO) safe limit for PM2.5 of 5 μg/m3 by a factor of 17. The PM1 mass composition included metals (31 %), WSIs (28 %), OC and EC (9.8 %), and PAHs (0.4 %). Winter recorded the highest PM1 concentration (96.1 ± 25.8 μg/m3), followed by post-monsoon, summer, and monsoon seasons. The average concentration of PAHs was 364.6 ± 226.6 ng/m3. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) identified traffic, emissions from biomass/coal and wood combustion, industrial/stationary sources, and secondary aerosols as potential contributors. The Ames test revealed the presence of frameshift mutations and base pair substitutions, especially in winter and post-monsoon. Additionally, PM1 exhibited cytotoxic effects on V-79 cells, with heightened toxicity during winter and prolonged exposure in other seasons. This study underscores the urgent need to address local emission sources and establish regulatory standards for PM1 in urban areas.

SOURCE APPORTIONMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC AND SEDIMENTARY PAHS FROM KOLKATA, INDIA USING COMPOUND-CLASS-SPECIFIC RADIOCARBON ANALYSIS (CCSRA)

ABSTRACT Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major air pollutants that are ubiquitously produced by the combustion of organic materials, and it is extremely important to identify their pollution sources. In this study, molecular fingerprinting and compound class-specific radiocarbon dating (CCSRA) were performed on PAHs from canal sediments and air samples collected in Kolkata, India’s third largest city (population approximately 16 million), where PAHs pollution has been a serious problem. Average PAH (Σ12-parent PAHs) concentrations in air samples were 65.1 ng m–3 in summer and 70.9 ng m–3 in winter and in canal sediments were 32.7 µg g–1, which are classified as “very high-level” pollution. Molecular fingerprinting using methyl-PAH/PAH (MPAHs/PAHs) ratios and isomer pair ratios with molecular weights of 178, 202, 228, and 276 suggested that wood and coal combustion were the dominant sources of PAHs in the sediment, and that atmospheric PAHs were influenced by oil combustion in addition to them. The fraction of contemporary carbon (ƒC) of sedimentary PAHs (0.056–0.100), together with the extremely low MPAHs/PAHs ratio results, lead to the conclusion that the major source of the high concentration of PAHs in the canals is from coal combustion. On the other hand, the ƒC of atmospheric PAHs (0.272–0.369) was close to the share of biomass fuels in India’s domestic fuel consumption in 2011 (about 35%). Furthermore, the observed ƒC-discrepancy between atmospheric and sedimentary PAHs in the same urban environment was interpreted to give an insight into the loading pathway of PAHs to canal sediments in Kolkata.

Review of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Pollution Characteristics and Carcinogenic Risk Assessment in Global Cooking Environments.

In recent years, research on air pollution in cooking environments has gained increasing attention, particularly studies related to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution. Hence, it is crucial and urgent to conduct a comprehensive review of research findings and further evaluate their carcinogenic risks. This study adopts a comprehensive literature review approach, systematically integrating and deeply analyzing the conclusions and data from 62 selected relevant studies. It focuses on the impact of different factors on PAHs concentrations, considers the indoor-outdoor PAHs concentration ratio, and conducts carcinogenic risk assessments for PAHs. The results show that Africa has the highest average PAHs pollution concentration globally at 14.74μg/m³, exceeding that of other continents by 1.5 to 160.9 times. Among various influencing factors, fuel type has the most significant impact on PAHs concentrations. Existing research data indicate that cooking with charcoal as fuel produces the highest PAHs concentration at 223.52μg/m³, with high molecular weight PAHs accounting for 58.16%, significantly higher than when using clean energy. Furthermore, efficient ventilation systems have been proven to substantially reduce PAHs concentrations, with a reduction rate of up to 88.1%. However, cooking methods and food types also have a small but non-negligible impact on PAHs production. Using mild cooking methods such as steaming and selecting low-fat foods can also reduce PAHs to some extent. Additionally, through the analysis of the Indoor/Outdoor ratio, it was found that cooking is the primary source of indoor pollution, and the average concentration of PAHs in cooking environments in Asia and Africa is much higher than in Europe and America. The Total Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (TILCR) exceeds 10⁻⁴, indicating a high level of carcinogenic risk.

Phase distribution and probabilistic risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in indoor air of coffee shops at Zahedan, Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of hydrocarbons, some of which are established human carcinogens. Human exposure to these chemicals is complex and originates from both indoor and outdoor sources. This study measured the concentration of PAHs in the gaseous and particulate phases during the cold months of 2022 using XAD-2 sorbent tubes and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filters in the indoor air of coffee shops in Zahedan, Iran (n=23). The average concentrations of particulate-bound PAHs and gaseous PAHs were 13,411.86 ± 6,517.24 ng/m³ and 6,432.76 ± 4,311.72 ng/m³, respectively. Source apportionment analyses indicated that the primary sources of PAHs in coffee shops were fossil fuel combustion and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), commonly referred to as second and third-hand smoke. The lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) of inhaled PAHs was calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The mean LTCR for adults and children from inhaling these substances were 9.43×10 - 6 ± 5.06 ×10 - 6 and 5.34×10 - 6 ± 2.87 ×10 - 6, respectively. The hazard quotient (HQ) of PAHs exceeded 1. These findings highlight the need to reduce PAHs exposure in public spaces through proper health warning labels and regulated indoor smoking policies.

Anthropogenic impacts on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water: Evidence from the COVID-19 lockdown

The lockdown restrictions against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have led to unprecedented reductions in global anthropogenic activities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic combustion-induced pollutants, but the influence of anthropogenic responses to COVID-19 on PAH contamination remains largely unknown. Here we quantified the impacts of lockdown restrictions on 16PAH pollution based on the data in concentrations dissolved in the water phase and absorbed on the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Elbe River from 2015 to 2021 and determined the changes in source contributions classified by individual years and stations. Results show that the annual average PAH concentrations in water and SPM were determined as 0.055 μg·L-1 and 3.77 mg·kg-1 from 2015 to 2021, respectively. Pronounced declines in PAH on SPM (up to -18 %) were observed during the three lockdowns in Germany from 2020 to 2021. However, dramatic rebounds of anthropogenic activities during the removal of the lockdown led to increases (up to 29 %) in ∑16PAH concentrations compared to the same period in previous years. Through the source apportionment method, vehicle and coal emissions were the two most predominant sources of PAHs in the river. Vehicle contribution decreased during the lockdown, while coal emissions increased by 5 %. Health risks for three age groups were assessed as potential low risk and decreased by 18 % from 1.54 × 10–4 in 2015 to 1.27 × 10–4 in 2019, and rebounded to 1.40 × 10–4 in 2020–2021. The findings of this study highlight the strong consistency between PAH concentrations and anthropogenic intensity, implying that source control from improved cleaner production is an effective pathway for mitigating PAH contamination in the aquatic environment.

AQUA-GAPS/MONET-Derived Concentrations and Trends of PAHs and Polycyclic Musks across Global Waters.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), released from petrogenic, pyrogenic or diagenetic sources (degradation of wood materials), are of global concern due to their adverse effects, and potential for long-range transport. While dissolved PAHs have been frequently reported in the literature, there has been no consistent approach of sampling across water bodies. Passive samplers from the AQUA/GAPS-MONET initiative were deployed at 46 sites (28 marine and 18 freshwater), and analyzed for 28 PAHs and six polycyclic musks (PCMs) centrally. Freely dissolved PAH concentrations were dominated by phenanthrene (mean concentration 1500 pg L-1; median 530 pg L-1) and other low molecular weight compounds. Greatest concentrations of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene were typically from the same sites, mostly in Europe and North America. Of the PCMs, only galaxolide (72% of samples) and tonalide (61%) were regularly detected, and were significantly cross-correlated. Benchmarking of PAHs relative to penta- and hexachlorobenzene confirmed that the most remote sites (Arctic, Antarctic, and mountain lakes) displayed below average PAH concentrations. Concentrations of 11 of 28 PAHs, galaxolide and tonalide were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with population density within a radius of 5 km of the sampling site. Characteristic PAH ratios gave conflicting results, likely reflecting multiple PAH sources and postemission changes.

Characteristics, sources, and health risks of PAHs and their derivatives in indoor dust in Zhengzhou

The occurrence, source, and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-PAHs (NPAHs), and oxy-PAHs (OPAHs) in indoor dust collected from three types of microenvironments (offices, classrooms, and dormitories) at a university campus in Zhengzhou were analysed. The results showed that the average concentration of the total PAHs was 2403.21 ± 981.99 ng g−1, with PHE (20.06% of Σ18PAHs) and BkF (15.46%) being the dominant species. The average concentrations of total NPAHs and OPAHs were 11.09 ± 5.12 and 385.80 ± 255.27 ng g−1, with 2+3N-FLT (39.15%) and 9-FLO (39.76%) as the most abundant species of NPAHs and OPAHs, respectively. The average concentrations of total PAHs, NPAHs, and OPAHs in different microenvironments displayed obvious spatial specificity with the highest values in dormitories. The main source of PAHs, as identified by diagnostic ratios, was petroleum combustion, coal/biomass combustion and vehicle exhaust emissions. The average incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for undergraduates exposed to dust in classrooms and dormitories exceeded 10−6, indicating a potential cancer risk. The most important exposure pathway was dermal contact, while the inhalation route was negligible.

Characteristics of typical intermediate and semi volatile organic compounds in Shanghai during China International Import Expo event

To ensure good air quality during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) event, stringent emission-reduction measures were implemented in Shanghai. To assess the efficacy of these measures, this study measured typical categories of intermediate/semi volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs), including alkanes (C10–C26 n-alkanes and pristane), EPA-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylnaphthalenes, benzothiazole (BTH) and chlorobenzenes (CBs), at an urban site of Shanghai before and during two CIIE events (2019 and 2020; non-CIIE versus CIIE). The average concentrations of alkanes and PAHs during both 2019 and 2020 CIIE events decreased by approximately 41% and 17%, respectively, compared to non-CIIE periods. However, the decline in BTH and CBs was only observed during CIIE-2019. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from alkanes, PAHs and BTH was evaluated under atmospheric conditions, revealing considerable SOA contributions from dimethylnaphthalenes and BTH. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis further revealed that life-related sources, such as cooking and residential emissions, make a noticeable contribution (21.6%) in addition to the commonly concerned gasoline-vehicle sources (31.5%), diesel-related emissions (20.8%), industrial emissions (18.6%) and ship emissions (7.5%). These findings provide valuable insights into the efficacy of the implemented measures in reducing atmospheric I/SVOCs levels. Moreover, our results highlight the significance of exploring additional individual species of I/SVOCs and life-related sources for further research and policy development.

Occurrence and ecological risk of PAHs in urban road runoff in Beijing.

The occurrence and ecological risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different types of urban road runoff in Beijing during two typical rainfall events were studied. The average concentration of PAHs in road runoff particulate was in the order of Guanyuanqiao Road (ring road, 15,175 ng/L) > Huayuanqiao Road (primary road, 4,792 ng/L) > Dongcheng Alley (alley, 4,774 ng/L) > Nansihuan Viaduct (viaduct, 770 ng/L), much higher than dissolved PAHs. The total concentration of ∑16PAHs decreased with runoff scouring. Rainfall conditions and the accumulation of PAHs in the early rainfall period show a significant impact on PAHs pollution. The event mean concentration range of PAHs is 674-21,596 ng/L, following in the order of ring road > primary road > alley > viaduct. The proportion of four-ring PAHs was the highest. The first flush effect of PAHs is found in both rainfall events, and the effect of different ring PAHs is relatively similar. The content of PAHs is positively correlated with the amount of total organic carbon and suspended substance in runoff (r2> 0.72). The ecological risk assessment indicated that PAHs in road runoff except viaduct road corresponded to high risk.

Occurrence of BTX and PAHs in underground drinking water of coking contaminated sites: Linkage with altitude and health risk assessment by boiling-modified models

The safety of underground drinking water has received widespread attention. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and health risks of pollutants in underground drinking water of coking contaminated sites. In this study, the distribution characteristics, sources, and human health risks of benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in underground drinking water from a typical coking contaminated site in Shanxi of China were investigated. The average concentrations of BTX and PAHs in coking plant (CP) were 5.1 and 4.8 times higher than those in residential area (RA), respectively. Toluene and Benzene were the main BTX, while Acenaphthene, Fluorene, and Pyrene were the main PAHs. Concentrations of BTX/PAHs were negatively correlated with altitude, revealing altitude might be an important geological factor influencing spatial distribution of BTX/PAHs. PMF model demonstrated that the BTX/PAHs pollution in RA mainly originated from coking industrial activities. Health risk assessments were conducted by a modified US EPA-based model, in which environmental concentrations were replaced by residual concentrations after boiling. Residual ratios of different BTX/PAHs were determined by boiling experiments to be 9.4–93.8 %. The average total carcinogenic risks after boiling were decreased from 2.6 × 10−6 to 1.4 × 10−6 for adults, and from 4.3 × 10−6 to 2.1 × 10−6 for children, suggesting boiling was an effective strategy to reduce the carcinogenic risks from BTX/PAHs, especially for ingestion pathway. Monte Carlo simulation results matched well with the calculated results, suggesting the uncertainty was acceptable and the risk assessment results were reliable. This study provided useful information for revealing the spatial distribution of BTX/PAHs in underground drinking water of coking contaminated sites, understanding their linkage with altitude, and also helped to more accurately evaluate the health risks by using the newly established boiling-modified models.

Sources, spatial-distributions and fluxes of PAH-contaminated dusts in the Athabasca oil sands region

Atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has increased in northern Alberta, Canada, due to industrial development in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR). However, the sources, summertime deposition fluxes and associated spatial patterns are poorly characterized, and the magnitude of contamination has not been directly contrasted with comparable measurements around large Canadian cities. PAHs were measured in Sphagnum moss collected from 30 bogs in the AOSR and compared with reference moss collected from various remote, rural and near-urban sites in Alberta and Ontario. At all 39 locations, strong correlations between depositional fluxes of PAHs and accumulation rates of ash (n = 117, r = 0.877, p < 0.001) implied that the main source of PAHs to moss was atmospheric deposition of particles. Average PAH concentrations at near-field AOSR sites (mean [SD], 62.4 [24.3] ng/g) were significantly higher than at far-field AOSR sites (44.9 [20.8] ng/g; p = 0.038) or the 7 reference sites in Alberta (20.6 [3.5] ng/g; p < 0.001). In fact, average PAH concentrations across the entire AOSR (7,850 km2) were approximately twice as high as in London, Ontario, or near petroleum upgrading and major traffic corridors in Edmonton, Alberta. A chemical mass balance model estimated that both delayed petcoke (33 % of PAHs) and fine tailings (38 % of PAHs) were the major sources of PAHs in the AOSR. Over the 2015 summer growing season, we estimate that 101–110 kg of PAHs (on 14,300–17,300 tonnes of PAH-containing dusts) were deposited to the AOSR within a 50 km radius of surface mining. Given that the highest PAH deposition was to the northern quadrant of the AOSR, which includes the First Nations community of Fort MacKay, further dust control measures should be considered to protect human and environmental health in the region.

Characteristics and health risk assessment of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in a rural village, in Northeast of China: impact of coal and biomass burning.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has health effects that may depend on its sources and chemical composition. In this study, characteristics of PM2.5 chemical composition and health risk assessment from Songyuan, China, were investigated during day and night in indoor and outdoor from February 4 to 19, 2021. Relative high concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained in indoor environment than outdoor, with 503.95 ± 209.62μg/m3 during the day and 357.52 ± 232.81μg/m3 at night for the indoor environment. Relatively high total carbon, organic carbons, elemental carbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) were obtained in indoor environment. However, the average concentrations of PAHs were higher during night (73.57 ± 43.09ng/m3) in indoor and OPAHs during day (6.027 ± 2.960ng/m3) in outdoor. They had different I/O distributions of these compounds during day and night. Indeno(1,2,3-cd) pyrene was the dominant PAHs, and benzanthrone was the dominant OPAHs; this is different with the previous studies. The high indoor/outdoor ratios showed the indoor coal and biomass burning greatly affect the indoor pollutants. Average ILCR health risk assessment for PAHs was all higher than 10-6 for different age gender, suggesting there has potential cancer risk existed for populations living in the rural coal and biomass burning area Songyuan, China.

Source apportionment and source specific health risk assessment of HMs and PAHs in soils with an integrated framework in a typical cold agricultural region in China

A new innovative methodology system framework for source apportionment and source-specific risk assessment has been proposed and actively applied to identify the contamination characteristics, oriented sources and health risks associated with contamination levels of Heavy metals (HMs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils, a typical cold agricultural region in Northeastern China. To achieve this meaningful goal, a large-scale dataset including 1780 top soil samples, 10 HMs and 16 priority PAHs has been organized and collected from a typical study area in China. The total concentrations of the 10 selected HMs in study area range from 0.05 to 2147.40 mg/kg, with an average of 549.25 ± 541.37 mg/kg. The average concentrations of PAHs for (3–6)-rings are 16.60 ± 18.90, 26.40 ± 28.20, 9.51 ± 13.00 and 1.99 ± 5.30 ng/g, respectively. On the base of optimized literature source fingerprints for HM and PAH, a widely used receptor model, positive matrix factorization (PMF) has been applied to apportion the contamination sources HMs and PAHs in soils. Then source-specific health risk of soil HMs and PAHs have been assessed using the probabilistic incremental lifetime cancer risk model incorporated with source apportionment results data. Fertilizer residues/coke oven comprise the primary contamination source contributors of HMs and PAHs with corresponding contributions of 32.23 % and 27.93 % for HMs and 37.94 % for PAHs. Fertilizer/pesticide residues contributes most to the risks of soil HMs (28.8 %), followed by fossil fuel combustion (24.6 %), mining activities (20.2 %), traffic and vehicle emission (16.3 %) and electroplating/dyeing (14.1 %). Meanwhile, the ranking of health risks from the five identified contamination sources of soil PAHs are resident discharge, coal-fired boilers, coke oven emission, gasoline combustion and power plant, with the contribution of 27.1 %, 25.3 %, 17.3 %, 15.5 % and 14.8 %.And relatively, source-specific risk assessment demonstrates fossil fuel and coal combustion contribute the greatest impact to the total risk of HMs and PAHs (61.7 % and 56.1 %), respectively. This study provides a good example of how the source specific health risk assessment can be utilized to reduce the contamination in soils.

Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from the Tampamachoco lagoon, Tuxpan River mouth, Gulf of Mexico

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic chemicals that consist of carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, which are considered as high-priority persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Their source is due to an incomplete burning of fossil fuels and organic materials. In the present study, the distribution and concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in sediments of the Tampamachoco lagoon and Tuxpan River estuary at the Gulf of Mexico were analyzed. The surface sediment samples were collected during the dry (March–June) and rainy (August–November) seasons. PAHs were analyzed by means of a gas capillary chromatography-FID. In dry season, the average concentration of PAHs in sediments was 860 ± 390 ng/g, and in rainy season, it was 1140 ± 450 ng/g. During both seasons, the total concentration of chrysene was high and a domain of the compounds with 4 benzene rings was observed. The source of PAHs was investigated in 78.6% of the lagoon sites. 45.5% revealed indicators of a mixed origin between pyrolytic and petrogenic sources, and 36.4% was petrogenic, and the remaining 18.2% was pyrolytic PAHs.

Dissemination and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and sediment of Buriganga and Dhaleswari rivers of Dhaka, Bangladesh

Concentration, source, ecological and health risks of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were estimated for water and sediment samples of two urban rivers namely Buriganga River (BR) and Dhaleswari River (DR). The mean concentration of ∑PAHs in BR water and sediment were 9619.2 ngL−1 and 351.6 ngg−1, respectively. Furthermore, the average PAH concentrations detected in DR water and sediment were 1979.1 ngL−1 and 792.9 ngg−1, respectively. The composition profile showed that 3-ring PAHs were dominant in the water matrix; however, 5-ring PAHs were prevalent in the sediment samples of both rivers. Sources apportion study of PAHs indicated that mixed combustion and petroleum sources are responsible for PAHs contamination in the rivers. Ecological risk study of water suggested that the aquatic lives of both rivers are threatened by Fla, BbF, BkF, DahA, and IcdP, as presented above the threshold level. Comparison with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicated that adverse effects might cause occasionally in the sediment ecosystem in DR at certain sampling sites for Nap, Acy, Fl, Phe, Ant, Pyr, Chr, BaP, and DahA. On the other hand, the presence of Nap, Acy and DahA might occasionally cause adverse biological effects in the BR sediment ecosystem. Estimated hazard quotient (HI > 1) and carcinogenic risk (CRtotal > 10−4) values indicated that local inhabitants living in the vicinity of the rivers are prone to high health risks.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Topsoils Along the Taipu River Banks in the Yangtze River Delta, China: Occurrence, Source and Risk Assessment.

Taipu River is an important transboundary river and drinking water source in the Yangtze River Delta, China. This study collected 15 topsoil samples along the Taipu River banks and subsequently determined the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations, sources, and ecological and health risks. The sum of toxic 15 PAHs concentrations ranged from 83.13 to 28342.53 ng/g, with a mean of 2828.69 ng/g. High molecular weight (HMW) PAHs were the dominant components and Indene (1,2,3, -cd) benzopyrene (InP) accounted for the highest proportion in individuals. The average PAH concentration in residential land was the highest, followed by those in industrial and agricultural land. The PAH concentration was positively related to contents of total carbon, total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and aminopeptidase activity in soils. The mixed combustion of biomass, coal, and petroleum and traffic emissions could be the primary PAH contributors. The total PAHs at over half of sampling points had relatively high risk quotients and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values, posing potential or great ecological threats and health risks.

A comparison of PAH exposure in red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) around natural and artificial reefs in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico

Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) are an important fishery resource in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and are found in abundance around artificial (e.g. oil and gas platforms) and natural habitats (e.g. coral reefs, outcroppings). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are a small but toxic component of crude oil released into GoM waters through both anthropogenic (e.g., oil and gas activities) and natural (e.g., hydrocarbon seeps) sources. The objectives of this study were to measure and compare PAH concentrations between tissue matrices (liver, gonad, muscle, and bile), by sex and location (e.g., artificial oil and gas infrastructure vs. natural reefs), of Red Snapper collected in the northwestern GoM. In 2016, Red Snapper (n = 88) were collected from natural and artificial reefs to evaluate potential differences in PAH exposures and body burdens. There were no significant results from the biometric analysis or their association with PAH's. Average PAH concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in livers than in gonads and muscle tissue. No significant differences were found in PAH concentrations between sexes or between structure type for both biliary, liver, or, muscle PAH concentrations, likely due to the close proximity of the natural and anthropogenic sites sampled (within 97 km radius). However, biliary PAH concentrations in fish collected outside of the densely populated oil and gas infrastructure fields had significantly lower PAH levels (p < 0.001). Thus, the scale at which samples are collected and compared is critical to understanding the cumulative impacts of oil and gas activities and underscores the need for further research at multiple scales across the GoM.

Electrokinetically-delivered persulfate and pulsed direct current electric field induced transport, mixing and thermally activated in situ for remediation of PAHs contaminated soil.

Herein, we proposed and proved a novel strategy that enhanced the delivery of persulfate (PS) to soil by electrokinetics (EK), and then applying a pulsed direct current (DC) electric field thermally activated the PS in situ, and synchronously promoted PS plume mixing, contaminants-free radicals reaction and continued to replenish PS to the soil, to achieve efficient degradation of contaminants in low permeability zones. Results showed that transport rate of PS in tested soil by EK was approximately 12.3 times than diffusion. Applying an irregular pulsed DC field maintained the targeted temperature (30-50℃) during activation phase, and generated two oxidative radicals (SO4∙-/∙OH). Concurrently, in the case, electromigration and electroosmosis have promoted the PS transport and the reactive mixing of PS/free radicals with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil and enhance the PAHs degradation. PS concentrations in pore fluid was characterized by an increase accompanied by continuous fluctuations. Eventually, in case of the long-term low-temperature activation (i.e., 30-40 ℃), a significant decreases (nearly 60%) in average concentration of PAHs in the whole soil cell was observed over 10 days. These results demonstrates that the novel strategy has great potentiality in the remediation of low permeability contaminated soil.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Contamination in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus Lacépède, 1803 from Lake Togo-Lagoon of Aného, Togo: Possible Human Health Risk Suitable to Their Consumption.

The Lake Togo-Lagoon of Aného is located in the coastal zone where phosphorite mining is carried out. This mining discharges all kinds of waste such as fuel oil into the surrounding environment without prior treatment. Moreover, the hydrosystem receives runoff and river inputs after having crossed and leached from mining and urban soils. This study aims to determine the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination in commercially consumed fish species (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) from that hydrosystem and the associated health risks for consumers. For that, fish sample collection was performed during the dry season. Afterwards, their muscles, gills, and livers were cut and 12 PAHs were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The total PAHs (tPAHs) concentrations in fish tissues ranged from 5.24 to 48.40 µg/kg with average concentration of 14.51 ± 8.95 µg/kg in muscles, from 5.90 to 28.20 µg/kg averaging 14.90 ± 5.19 µg/kg in gills, and from 43.20 to 149.00 µg/kg with an average of 80.74 ± 27.08 µg/kg in livers. The average concentrations of low molecular weight PAHs (LMW PAHs) were 10.82 ± 9.61 µg/kg in muscles, 8.25 ± 5.43 µg/kg in gills, and 47.97 ± 22.56 µg/kg in livers whereas those of high molecular weight of PAHs (HMW PAHs) were 4.10 ± 2.14 µg/kg in muscles, 7.98 ± 3.96 µg/kg in gills, and 32.77 ± 8.66 µg/kg in livers. An overall trend of decreasing concentrations with increasing fish size classes was observed for some PAHs (Naphtalene, Pyrene in muscles, for Pyrene, Benzo(a)Anthracene, Chrysene in gills and for Naphtalene, Phenanthrene in livers). The PAHs in these fish might have pyrogenic and petrogenic sources, with the dominance of pyrogenic, and all of the total hazard quotients (THQ) are less than 1. This situation must not be neglected for better planning sustainable management of the target ecosystem.

Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in waters and sediments from Olt River dam reservoirs in Romania

This study provides important data on the distribution, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in surface waters and sediments collected from dam reservoirs on middle and lower course of the Olt River, the main tributary of the Danube, until the discharge into the Black Sea. A wide variation range of total PAHs concentrations in water (from 1.3 to 46.2 ng/L) and sediment (from 1.78 to 614.04 μg/kg) samples was emphasized by the results. The highest average PAHs concentration in water was recorded in the cold season and the lowest in the summer. In sediments, no differences were observed depending on the sampling period. Spatial distribution of PAHs in waters and sediments was correlated with the main anthropogenic activities along the river course. Regardless of the method used to attribute PAH sources (diagnostic ratios of specific PAHs, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), it was confirmed that the potential anthropogenic sources of PAHs were both pyrogenic (incomplete combustion of biomass and coal) and pyrolytic (incomplete combustion of liquid fossil fuels and vehicle exhaust emissions), with a dominant pyrolytic input. Ecological risk assessment based on environmental quality standards, mean effect range-median quotient (m-ERM-Q), toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) and risk quotient (RQ) methods indicated potentially low ecological risks from PAHs. The ecological status of the Olt river waters poses no potential risk, and pollution of surface sediments can be classified as low polluted, except for two sites near industrial activities classified as moderately polluted. Therefore, a regular monitoring of PAHs concentration in the waters and sediments should be performed to prevent further contamination of PAHs in the studied area, especially in densely populated industrial areas.
