The variation of organic carbon concentrations in the surface water in Cua Luc Bay, Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

The total organic carbon (TOC) in the marine environment, which includes dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC), is essential to the ocean’s carbon cycling system. This research was carried out in 2023 to assess the variation in organic carbon concentration in the environment of Cua Luc Bay and Ha Long Bay at 22 survey stations. The results show that the average concentrations of DOC and POC are 1.59 ± 0.21 mgC/L and 0.74 ± 0.35 mgC/L, respectively. However, DOC and POC concentrations are still considered low compared with other rivers and estuaries in Vietnam and worldwide. The ratios of organic carbons like DOC/POC and POC/Chl-a in this study area were also calculated. The ratios’ results are evidence of many fluctuations in the water environment in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, in 2023.

An Increase in Stream Water DOC Concentrations May Not Necessarily Imply an Increase in DOC Fluxes in Areas Affected by Acid Deposition and Climate Change—An Example from Central European Catchments

Over a period of 30 years (1993–2022), headwater catchments in the Slavkov Forest (Czech Republic) exhibited a robust increase in stream water DOC (dissolved organic carbon) concentrations following a significant reduction in acidic atmospheric deposition. Sulfur deposition decreased from 34 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1993 to 2.6 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 2022. Three Norway-spruce-dominated research sites—Černý Potok (CEP), a 15.2 ha peatbog catchment, Lysina (LYS), a 27.3 ha granitic catchment, and Pluhův Bor (PLB), a 21.6 ha serpentinite catchment, were investigated. The three–year average DOC concentration increased from 48.2 mg L−1 (1993–1995) to 68.3 mg L−1 (2020–2022) at CEP (0.69 mg L−1 yr−1). LYS showed an increase from 16.9 mg L−1 to 25.4 mg L−1 (0.30 mg L−1 yr−1 annually). The largest increase was recorded at PLB, with an increase from 15.7 mg L−1 to 36.7 mg L−1 (0.89 mg L−1 yr−1). A decline in ionic strength was identified as the main driver of the DOC increase. The annual runoff declined significantly at CEP and LYS from 465 mm to 331 mm as a result of rising air temperatures and reduced precipitation between 2014 and 2022. PLB (average of 266 mm) did not show a statistically significant decline. Recently, PLB experienced significant deforestation that likely lowered transpiration and thus increased catchment runoff. As a result, DOC fluxes did not change significantly at CEP (average 210 kg ha−1 yr−1) and LYS (90 kg ha −1 yr−1). However, PLB’s DOC flux more than doubled, increasing from 44 to 106 kg ha−1 yr−1. Drivers connected with global change, such as increasing temperatures, or potential chemical drivers, such as reductions in Al concentrations and pH changes, were not able to explain the observed changes in DOC concentra tions and fluxes.

Trihalomethane formation potentials from the effluent of different wastewater treatment sources

Abstract Reused wastewater is commonly treated with disinfection to remove pathogenic microorganisms; however, this process generates disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs). This study aimed to investigate the levels of THMs and THM formation potential (THMFP) in treated wastewater originating from different sources i.e., domestic, food-processing industry and hospital. The samples from each source were collected three times between June and August 2023. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was evaluated from the samples prior to and after disinfection with chlorine over a period of 7 days. The results found that the concentration of DOC was highest in hospital effluent, with an average value of 5.60±0.16 mg/L followed by effluent from the food-processing industry and domestic, which had average DOC concentrations of 4.60±1.39 mg/L and 4.46±0.37 mg/L, respectively. The concentration of THMs in hospital effluent was found the highest at 6.91±0.88 µg/L followed by effluent from the domestic and food-processing industries, which exhibited amounts of 6.74±0.77 µg/L and 5.25±0.77 µg/L, respectively. In contrast, the food-processing factory had the highest concentration of THMFP at 299.39±26.54 µg/L, while the domestic and hospital effluent displayed a lower concentration of 133.64±36.86 µg/L and 51.48±9.01 µg/L, respectively.

Remote sensing estimation of dissolved organic carbon concentrations in Chinese lakes based on Landsat images

Long-term estimation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics based on satellite data provides important information to comprehensively understand the lake carbon cycle, climate change, and sustainable water resource management. Here, we proposed a novel DOC concentration estimation model based on water classification using a large field dataset (n = 1929) collected from 123 Chinese lakes. We divided water into terrestrial-DOM-dominated and endogenous-DOM-dominated water bodies using the optimal spectral slope ratio (SR) threshold determined by setting the classification scenario. Then, we calibrated the optimal DOC estimation model using stepwise quadratic polynomial regression for the different types of water and determined the final DOC estimation model. The final DOC estimation model performed well in both the calibration and validation datasets, with R2 ≥ 0.78, RMSD ≤ 0.78 mg/L, and MAPD ≤ 16.51 %. Subsequently, we mapped the spatiotemporal dynamics of DOC concentrations in Chinese lakes with surface area greater than 1 km2 (n = 2621) between 1986 and 2021 using the Landsat data. Spatially, we observed obvious spatial heterogeneity in the DOC concentrations in the Chinese lakes, with the highest DOC concentration occurring in the Northeast Region (NER) (4.39 ± 0.21 mg/L) and the lowest DOC concentration occurring in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Region (QTR) (3.76 ± 1.12 mg/L). Temporally, the average DOC concentration in Chinese lakes generally decreased at a rate of − 0.09 mg/L decade−1 from 1986 to 2021, during which 56.5 % of the lakes experienced a decrease, 29.6 % of the lakes experienced no obvious change, and 13.9 % of the lakes experienced an increase. We also revealed that human activities are the main drivers of DOC increases in lakes, while vegetation and climate change are the main drivers of DOC decreases in lakes. Our results contribute to improving the accuracy of organic carbon estimations in lakes worldwide and provides meaningful insights into the lake carbon cycle..

Enhanced Role of Streamflow Processes in the Evolutionary Trends of Dissolved Organic Carbon.

Investigating dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics and drivers in rivers enhances the understanding of carbon-environment linkages and support sustainability. Previous studies did not fully consider the dynamic nature of key drivers that influence the long-term changing trends in DOC concentration over time (the controlling factors and their roles in DOC trend can undergo alterations over time). We analyzed 42 years (1979-2018) of hydrometeorology, sulfate SO4, and DOC data from a 5.42 km2 watershed in central-southern Ontario, Canada. Our findings reveal a significant (p ≤ 0.01) overall increase in DOC concentrations, mainly due to the coevolution of SO4 and streamflow trends, especially the extreme flows. Over the 42-year period, the changing trend of streamflow (especially the extreme high or low flows) have significantly (p < 0.05) intensified their influence on DOC trends, increasing by an average of 30%. Conversely, the impact of SO4 has weakened, experiencing an average decrease of 32.6%. The upward trend in the annual average DOC concentration is attributed to the increasing number of maximum flow days within a year, while the decreasing trend in the number of minimum flow days has a contrasting effect. In other words, changes in maximum and minimum flow days have a counteracting effect on the DOC concentration trends. These results underscore the importance of considering the effects of altered streamflow processes on carbon cycle changes under evolving environmental conditions.

A global database of dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration measurements in coastal waters (CoastDOM v1)

Abstract. Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC &gt; DON &gt; DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmol C L−1; median: 103 µmol C L−1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmol P L−1; median: 0.18 µmol P L−1). This dataset will be useful for identifying global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and will help facilitate the reuse of DOC, DON, and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes; closing nutrient budgets; estimating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous pools; and establishing a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.

Spatial-temporal distribution and source apportionment of riverine dissolved organic carbon in the Miyun section of the Chaobai River in Beijing, China

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is indicative of water quality in drinking source water and has an impact on drinking water treatment. Exploring occurrence of DOC in drinking source water is of great significance for the drinking water safety in Beijing. This study elucidated spatial-temporal DOC dynamics in the Miyun section of Chaobai River in Beijing of China and identified sources of DOC based on DOC fluorescent spectral characteristics. Results showed that the average riverine DOC concentration was 30.60 mg/L. DOC concentrations in the Miyun section of the Chaobai River were 30.40, 30.24, and 31.09 mg/L in spring, summer and autumn, respectively. DOC concentrations at the three segments of the Miyun section of the Chaobai River (the Chaohe River, the Baihe River and the Chaobai River) were 29.93, 30.29 and 32.57 mg/L, respectively. Land use contributed to DOC variations rather than season and river segment. Significant increases in DOC concentration were observed in river water flowing through farmland and urban areas, and DOC concentration presented the highest after flowing through the farmland area. The results of FI, HIX and BIX showed that DOC mainly came from endogenous sources such as aquatic biological activities, and was less affected by terrestrial inputs. Special attentions ought to be paid on prevention and control of endogenous DOC inputs.

Spatiotemporal variability of organic carbon in streams and rivers of the Northern Hemisphere cryosphere

The earth's cryosphere is the outpost of climatic warming, which leads to rapid changes of organic carbon (OC) transport from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. OC in the cryosphere rivers plays vital roles in the carbon cycle and river ecosystem health. Yet, we still lack a comprehensive assessment of the spatiotemporal patterns of riverine OC across the Northern Hemisphere cryosphere. Here, we compiled OC concentration, radiocarbon (14C), and the specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) of dissolved OC (DOC) at 254 nm data from 1007 unique sites, extracted from 138 published literature between 1972 and 2022. Overall, the average DOC and particulate OC (POC) concentrations are 6.34 and 2.61 mg C L−1, respectively, with the average age of DOC and POC being ~1100 and ~4300 years BP, respectively, indicating the release of aged carbon pools. Seasonal variations in DOC and POC concentrations, Δ14C-DOC and SUVA254 were observed, with distinct spatial variations closely linked to specific watershed characteristics. We found permafrost-impacted watersheds displayed significantly higher DOC concentrations, younger OC ages but lower POC concentrations compared to glacier-impacted watersheds. Meanwhile, in boreal forest watersheds, DOC is the most concentrated and youngest in varied ecoregions. Additionally, in permafrost regions characterized by higher permafrost extent, ground ice content, or lowlands with thick overburden cover, riverine DOC is more concentrated and aromatic. We estimated that specific OC fluxes in glacier rivers are higher than that in permafrost rivers (4.77 and 1.86 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively). Our results highlight the complex and variable spatiotemporal patterns of riverine OC in the northern cryosphere, which are essential for assessing the impact of OC on the global carbon cycle and climate warming.

Dynamics of dissolved organic carbon during drought and flood events: A phase-by-stages perspective

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a key water quality parameter that plays a crucial role in controlling aquatic ecosystems and carbon cycling. Understanding DOC dynamics during hydrological extremes (i.e., droughts and floods) helps in managing water quality, but such variability is rarely studied. Furthermore, how differences in DOC concentrations among phase-by-stages of drought/flood affect simulation performances based on hydrological features remains unclear. Here, phase-by-stages of hydrological drought (flood) were divided into intensification (rising) and recovery (falling) periods based on drought peak intensity (flood peak intensity). The long-term (1976–2019) daily discharge and weekly (biweekly) DOC concentrations from four headwater streams with different watershed sizes (from 9.97 to 119.09 ha) in south-central Ontario, Canada, were used to achieve the above aims. The results showed that (i) the average DOC concentration during intensification (rising) stage of drought (flood) was smaller (larger) than during recovery (falling). (ii) Simulations performed better when accounting for phase-by-stages of drought/flood, with reductions in mean absolute percentage error of 32.85 % and 53.59 % for drought and flood events, respectively. These results will help understand the dynamics of DOC during hydrological extremes and improve simulation performance of numerical models for water quality parameters under changing environmental conditions.

Simulating dissolved organic carbon during dryness/wetness periods based on hydrological characteristics under multiple timescales

Understanding and simulating dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations is a challenge with important implications for water quality projections and carbon balance estimates, particularly at the event-scale. Hydrological dryness/wetness represents water shortage/surplus in surface water. Previous studies have analyzed the dynamic patterns of DOC concentrations during either dryness or wetness (or rewetting) periods. However, the dynamic patterns of DOC concentrations and corresponding simulations during both dryness and wetness events, based on their characteristics (i.e., duration and severity), remain to be fully understood, particularly under multiple timescales. This study proposed a framework to help overcome this limitation. The standardized streamflow index (SSI) combined with run theory was used to describe the dryness/wetness characteristics at the monthly, seasonal, and annual scales. Simulation models were constructed and validated based on the multivariable linear regression model and cross-validation method. Three evaluation indicators, namely, the coefficient of determination (R2), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE, %), were employed to determine the optimal model. This model was then applied to additional basins based on the correction coefficient method. Three nearby basins (HP3a, HP4, and HP6), with different catchment areas (9.28 to 122.80 ha) and long-term (41 years) daily streamflow and weekly (or biweekly) DOC measurements in the Harp Lake catchment, south-central Ontario, Canada, were used to demonstrate the usefulness of the framework. Data from HP3a was used to construct and validate the simulation model, and the model was applied to the HP4 and HP6 basins. Results show that the average DOC concentration during the dryness events is lower than that in the wetness events at the monthly, seasonal, and annual scales. The average, maximum, and minimum DOC concentrations during the dryness events increased with the dryness/wetness index timescales, but decreased during the wetness events. The optimal model was able to accurately simulate the DOC concentrations (R2 ≥ 0.90, NSE ≥ 0.90, and MAPE ≤ 10 %) at the monthly, seasonal, and annual scales based on the hydrological characteristics during the dryness and wetness periods, respectively, and the application results exhibit a good performance. The proposed framework can help improve the forecasting of DOC concentrations and the corresponding ecological coping strategies at the event-scale under changing environments.

Arctic biogeochemical and optical properties of dissolved organic matter across river to sea gradients

Arctic landscapes are warming and becoming wetter due to changes in precipitation and the timing of snowmelt which consequently alters seasonal runoff and river discharge patterns. These changes in hydrology lead to increased mobilization and transport of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) to Arctic coastal seas where significant impacts on biogeochemical cycling can occur. Here, we present measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) in the Yukon River-to-Bering Sea system and two river plumes on the Alaska North Slope which flow into the Beaufort Sea. Our sampling characterized optical and biogeochemical properties of DOM during high and low river discharge periods for the Yukon River-Bering Sea system. The average DOC concentration at the multiple Yukon River mouths ranged from a high of 10.36 mg C L-1 during the ascending limb of the 2019 freshet (late May), 6.4 mg C L-1 during the descending limb of the 2019 freshet (late June), and a low of 3.86 mg C L-1 during low river discharge in August 2018. CDOM absorption coefficient at 412 nm (aCDOM(412)) averaged 8.23 m-1, 5.07 m-1, and 1.9 m-1, respectively. Several approaches to model DOC concentration based on its relationship with CDOM properties demonstrated cross-system seasonal and spatial robustness for these Arctic coastal systems despite spanning an order of magnitude decrease in DOC concentration from the lower Yukon River to the Northern Bering Sea as well as the North Slope systems. “Snapshot” fluxes of DOC and CDOM across the Yukon River Delta to Norton Sound were calculated from our measurements and modeled water fluxes forced with upstream USGS river gauge data. Our findings suggest that during high river flow, DOM reaches the delta largely unaltered by inputs or physical and biogeochemical processing and that the transformations of Yukon River DOM largely occur in the plume. However, during low summer discharge, multiple processes including local precipitation events, microbial decomposition, photochemistry, and likely others can alter the DOM properties within the lower Yukon River and Delta prior to flowing into Norton Sound.

Photosensitizing properties of dissolved organic carbon in Canadian prairie pothole wetland ponds change in response to sunlight

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is an important component of the global carbon cycle providing ecological services such as carbon sources for microorganisms and the provision of a protective barrier between ultraviolet radiation and aquatic organisms. Our study examined the impacts of photodegradation on the optical properties of DOC in prairie wetland ponds in central Saskatchewan, Canada. Surface water was collected from two ponds with seasonal average DOC concentrations of 71.1 mg L−1 (More-DOC Pond) and 32.7 mg L−1 (Less-DOC Pond) and filtered through 1.2 µm GF/Fs into Teflon bottles transparent to UV light. Samples divided into dark and light treatments were incubated in situ at three different depths (surface, 0.25m, and 0.5 m) and collected every 2 weeks for 4 months. Excitation emission matrix scans from 300 to 800 nm and absorbance at 254 nm were measured. Absorbance at 254 nm in the More-DOC Pond and Less-DOC Pond waters decreased by 34% and 50%, respectively. Two fluorescence components were identified corresponding to previous published peaks C and M. Although bulk DOC concentrations did not show significant differences over time, fluorescence intensity of peak C decreased by 39% and 47%, and of peak M increased by 19% and 29%, in the More-DOC Pond and Less-DOC Pond, respectively. Increases in other fluorescence indicators such as fluorescence index (35% and 22%) and FRESH (29% and 30%) were also observed. Overall, terrestrial DOC from our sampling ponds became less aromatic, more aliphatic, of lower molecular weight, and lost absorptivity and fluorescence intensity after 12 weeks of incubation. Results of this study will provide a better understanding of optical characterizations and sources of DOC, and act as a foundation to further study on the role of DOC in prairie wetland ponds.

Estimating the lateral transfer of organic carbon through the European river network using a land surface model

Abstract. Lateral carbon transport from soils to the ocean through rivers has been acknowledged as a key component of the global carbon cycle, but it is still neglected in most global land surface models (LSMs). Fluvial transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and CO2 has been implemented in the ORCHIDEE LSM, while erosion-induced delivery of sediment and particulate organic carbon (POC) from land to river was implemented in another version of the model. Based on these two developments, we take the final step towards the full representation of biospheric carbon transport through the land–river continuum. The newly developed model, called ORCHIDEE-Clateral, simulates the complete lateral transport of water, sediment, POC, DOC, and CO2 from land to sea through the river network, the deposition of sediment and POC in the river channel and floodplains, and the decomposition of POC and DOC in transit. We parameterized and evaluated ORCHIDEE-Clateral using observation data in Europe. The model explains 94 %, 75 %, and 83 % of the spatial variations of observed riverine water discharges, bankfull water flows, and riverine sediment discharges in Europe, respectively. The simulated long-term average total organic carbon concentrations and DOC concentrations in river flows are comparable to the observations in major European rivers, although our model generally overestimates the seasonal variation of riverine organic carbon concentrations. Application of ORCHIDEE-Clateral for Europe reveals that the lateral carbon transfer affects land carbon dynamics in multiple ways, and omission of this process in LSMs may lead to an overestimation of 4.5 % in the simulated annual net terrestrial carbon uptake over Europe. Overall, this study presents a useful tool for simulating large-scale lateral carbon transfer and for predicting the feedbacks between lateral carbon transfer and future climate and land use changes.

Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Boreal Lakes: High Spatial and Inter‐Annual Variability Controlled by Landscape Attributes and Wet‐Dry Periods

AbstractConcentration and chemical composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) influence several lake functions; greenhouse gas exchange, nutrient cycling, food webs, and water treatability. To assess spatial and inter‐annual controls on DOC characteristics, 34 lakes were sampled annually for 8 years on the Boreal Plains, Western Canada—a region with heterogeneous surficial geology, and a sub‐humid climate with pronounced inter‐annual wet‐dry periods. Large spatial variability in long‐term average DOC concentration (10–49 mg C L−1) and aromaticity (SUVA254: 1.2–3.9 L mg−1 C m−1) among lakes was found. Higher DOC concentrations and aromaticity were associated with lakes in watersheds with fine‐textured surficial geology and with relatively large contributions through shallow, organic‐rich flow paths. Lake DOC aromaticity was also higher in lakes with lower evaporative enrichment, regardless of surficial geology, indicating shorter lake water residence times and less within‐lake degradation of allochthonous DOC. High inter‐annual variability for both DOC and aromaticity was observed, with coefficients of variation at 10.9 ± 4.6% and 11.1 ± 2.5% among lakes, respectively. Inter‐annual variability in DOC concentrations had low synchronicity among lakes, with patterns of variability linked to surficial geology and primarily responsive to short‐term cumulative precipitation. Conversely, inter‐annual variability in aromaticity had high synchronicity among lakes, driven by longer‐term cumulative precipitation and shifts in lake water residence times. Our study shows it is necessary to consider lake hydrogeomorphic setting and climate to understand spatial and inter‐annual variability in lake DOC characteristics and associated lake functions, and that Boreal Plains lakes have high climate sensitivity.

Probing sedimentary DOM in the deepest sector of Earth's surface

It has been suggested that hadal trenches are depocenters of organic matter and hotspots for microbial activities. Here, we measured the concentrations of pore-water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the seven short cores retrieved from three trenches (i.e., the Mariana Trench, the Mussau Trench, and the New Britain Trench), and analyzed the optical properties of pore-water dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the axis, forearc, and abyssal sediments in the southern Mariana Trench. The positive correlation between the average DOC concentrations and the in-situ total oxygen uptakes among the three trenches suggests that rate of organic matter degradation and redox condition likely control the downcore pore-water DOC concentrations in hadal sediments. Furthermore, analysis of fluorescence DOM reveals a higher carbon-normalized fluorescence of components emitting in the visible (“humic” and “fulvic”-like) at the Mariana Trench axis than at the abyssal plain and forearc. Together with the downcore increase in humification indices and absorbance ratios at the trench axis cores, this points at a significant accumulation of highly degraded, persistent, low-molecular-weight DOM produced by intensified microbial respiration at the trench axis. To our knowledge, this is the first study that examines the features of pore-water DOM in hadal trenches, which provides additional supports for the argument that microbial activities are enhanced at the trench axis and has implication for understanding DOM cycling in deep-sea sediments.

Isotopic and chromatographic fingerprinting of the sources of dissolved organic carbon in a shallow coastal aquifer

Abstract. The terrestrial subsurface is the largest source of freshwater globally. The organic carbon contained within it and processes controlling its concentration remain largely unknown. The global median concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater is low compared to surface waters, suggesting significant processing in the subsurface. Yet the processes that remove this DOC in groundwater are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the different sources and processes influencing DOC in a shallow anoxic coastal aquifer. Uniquely, this study combines liquid chromatography organic carbon detection with organic (δ13CDOC) carbon isotope geochemical analyses to fingerprint the various DOC sources that influence the concentration, carbon isotopic composition, and character with respect to distance from surface water sources, depth below surface, and inferred groundwater residence time (using 3H activities) in groundwater. It was found that the average groundwater DOC concentration was 5 times higher (5 mg L−1) than the global median concentration and that the concentration doubled with depth at our site, but the chromatographic character did not change significantly. The anoxic saturated conditions of the aquifer limited the rate of organic matter processing, leading to enhanced preservation and storage of the DOC sources from peats and palaeosols contained within the aquifer. All groundwater samples were more aromatic for their molecular weight in comparison to other lakes, rivers and surface marine samples studied. The destabilization or changes in hydrology, whether by anthropogenic or natural processes, could lead to the flux of up to 10 times more unreacted organic carbon from this coastal aquifer compared to deeper inland aquifers.

Dissolved organic carbon in Alaskan Arctic snow: concentrations, light-absorption properties, and bioavailability

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays an important role in the carbon cycle, radiative forcing, and biogeochemistry in cryospheric regions. In this study, concentrations, light-absorption properties and bioavailability of DOC from snow cover in Alaska were characterized. Results indicated that average concentrations of DOC in snow of Alaska (0.17 − 0.30 mg L−1) were lower than that found in Asian mountainous glaciers, but higher that found from polar regions snow. No significant trend of DOC was observed during April to May in 2017 due to the short term study; while the vertical variations generally showed a little higher values in the surface snow than that in the sub-surface snow. An obvious characteristic of DOC light-absorbance in snow between the wavelength of 300 and 700 nm indicated the mass absorption cross section of DOC at 365 nm (MACDOC365) was 0.32 ± 0.24 and 0.37 ± 0.32 m2 g−1 for the snow cover at Barrow site (Arctic Ocean coast) and the other Alaskan regions, respectively. The MACDOC365 values increased especially during snow melting, indicating the DOC with high MAC values were prone to retain in snow. The proportion of radiative forcing caused by DOC relative to that by black carbon in snow was approximately 2.3%, indicating that DOC in snow should be considered during the accelerated melt of snow cover. The bioavailability experiment of DOC in snow indicated that DOC may be an important bioavailable source for proglacial and coastal ecosystems in Alaskan Arctic regions. Using backward air mass trajectory analysis, we suggested that DOC deposited in snow at Barrow primarily originates from marine or terrestrial air mass, but the specific contribution of different sources cannot be quantified without data related to the DOC’s chemical composition and carbon isotopic signatures. This study highlighted the climatic implications of DOC in snow in the Arctic regions.

Extraction of Dissolved Organic Carbon from Glacier Ice for Radiocarbon Analysis

ABSTRACTAlpine glaciers are valuable archives for the reconstruction of human impact on the environment. Besides dating purposes, measurement of radiocarbon (14C) content provides a powerful tool for long-term source apportionment studies on the carbonaceous aerosols incorporated in ice cores. In this work, we present an extraction system for14C analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in ice cores. The setup can process ice samples of up to 350 g mass and offers ultra-clean working conditions for all extraction steps. A photo-oxidation method is applied by means of external UV irradiation of the sample. For an irradiation time of 30 min with catalyzation by addition of Fe2+and H2O2, we achieve an efficiency of 96 ± 6% on average. Inert gas working conditions and stringent decontamination procedures enable a low overall blank of 1.9 ± 1.6 μg C with a F14C value of 0.68 ± 0.13. This makes it possible to analyze the DOC in ice samples with a carbon content of as low as 25 μg C kg−1ice. For a first validation, the new method was applied to ice core samples from the Swiss Alps. The average DOC concentration and F14C values for the Fiescherhorn ice core samples show good agreement with previously reported data for the investigated period of 1925–1936 AD.

Dissolved organic carbon in summer precipitation and its wet deposition flux in the Mt. Yulong region, southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is an important organic pollutant in the air-water carbon cycle system, potentially influencing the global climate. In this study, 204 rainwater samples from five sampling stations in the Mt. Yulong region were synchronously collected from June to September in 2014. We comprehensively investigated the sources and wet deposition of DOC in summer precipitation. The average concentrations of DOC at five stations ranged from 0.74 to 1.31 mg L−1. The mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of rainwater DOC evaluated at 365 nm was 0.43 ± 0.32 m2 g−1. Backward trajectory analyses indicated that the southwest advection air parcel accounting for 46% of precipitation events, while the corresponding average concentration of rainwater DOC was 1.25 ± 0.56 mg C L−1. In addition to the local or regional contribution, large amount of atmospheric pollutants were transported from South Asia and Southeast Asia to the Mt. Yulong region, both of which had exerted great influence on the regional atmospheric environment. For the first time, the annual wet deposition of DOC in the Mt. Yulong region was estimated and determined to be 1.99 g C m−2 year−1. This is significant because the deposition of DOC on glaciers has great influence on surface albedo of snow and glacier melt. This study can bridge the gap of rainwater DOC research between the Mt. Yulong region and the southeast of Tibetan Plateau (TP), which has significant implications for better understanding the relationship of DOC deposition and glacial shrink in the TP.

Dissolved organic carbon in snow cover of the Chinese Altai Mountains, Central Asia: Concentrations, sources and light-absorption properties

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in snow plays an important role in river ecosystems that are fed by snowmelt water. However, limited knowledge is available on the DOC content in snow of the Chinese Altai Mountains in Central Asia. In this study, DOC in the snow cover of the Kayiertesi river basin, southern slope of Altai Mountains, was investigated during November 2016 to April 2017. The results showed that average concentrations of DOC in the surface snow cover (1.01 ± 0.52 mg L−1) were only a little higher than those in glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau, European Alps, and Alaska, but much higher than in Greenland Ice Sheet. Depth variations of DOC concentrations from snowpack profiles indicated higher values in the surface layer. During the observation period, scavenging efficiency for DOC in snow cover is estimated to be 0.15 ± 0.10, suggesting that DOC in snow can be affected more by the meltwater during ablation season than during accumulation season. The average mass absorption cross section at 365 nm and the absorption Ångström exponent of DOC were 0.45 ± 0.35 m2 g−1 and 2.59 ± 1.03, respectively, with higher values in March and April 2017. Fraction of radiative forcing caused by DOC relative to black carbon accounted for about 10.5%, implying DOC is a non-ignorable light-absorber of solar radiation in snow of the Altai regions. Backward trajectories analysis and aerosol vertical distribution images from satellites showed that DOC in the snow of the Altai Mountains was mainly influenced by air masses from Central Asia, Western Siberia, the Middle East, and some even from Europe. Biomass burning and organic carbon mixed with mineral dust contributed significantly to the DOC concentration. This study highlights the effects of DOC in the snow cover for radiative forcing and the need to study carbon cycling for evaluation of quality of the downstreams ecosystems.
