Performance analysis of solar assisted ground coupled heat pump system in Latvia

Today, with the increased popularity and availability of renewable energy sources the question of ensuring a proper household heating, that is energy, is not as complicated as it used to be. Users are embracing the environmental sustainability stand and are turning to heat pumps and solar panels as means of providing heat for their homes. The geothermal heat pump and solar thermal panels energy efficiency rates coupled make these the perfect choice for those, who are concerned about the impact they make on the environment-aspiring to zero emission buildings. The combined system of solar thermal panels and ground source heat pump for heating capacity 13 kW will be developed. The main novelty is the investigation of a new type of a solar thermal accumulation tank. Hypothetically this solar assisted ground coupled heat pump system should reach COP rate 4 and reduce electricity demand consumption by 40%. To find out the truth of proposed thesis, the research will be carried out. Both simulation and real-life object data analysis will be performed. As a result, the potential of such a system in northern latitudes will be determined.

Multi-agent strategy for low voltage DC supply for a smart home

PurposeThe researchers and policy makers worldwide have proposed many ideas for smart cities and homes in urban areas. The extensive work done for urban smart homes neglects the unique constraints of homes at remote mountain tops and deserts and rural village homes. The purpose of this paper is to propose a smart energy management system for a self-sustained home of any type situated in any geographical location with the availability of renewable energy sources like solar, etc. The purpose is mainly to highlight the importance and advantages of direct current (DC) homes with DC loads rather than a conventional alternating current (AC) home with both AC and DC loads. An attempt has been made to evolve a multi-agent coordinated control for the low voltage direct current (LVDC) smart home system.Design/methodology/approachLVDC supply systems with in situ power generation are providing an efficient solution for the energy needs of a DC smart home. The individual sub-systems of the LVDC system have their unique functions and priorities and hence require both coordinated and independent control. The entire DC smart home system is modeled in the Matlab and codes are implemented for each agent of the home. LVDC grid is operating either in battery connected mode or utility grid-connected mode, and the DC link voltage is held constant in both the cases. Energy imported from the utility grid is minimized by load shedding during the rectifier mode of the bidirectional converter. In addition, load shedding is also done when the battery is discharging to increase the discharge time of the battery. Load shedding is done on the basis of a fixed priority of loads. A 48 s simulation is performed on the Matlab model to bring out the 24-hour operation of the proposed system. Various modes are simulated and the corresponding actions of the agents are tested.FindingsA new control strategy with agents for each sub-system of the LVDC system is presented. Each individual agent works in tandem with other agents and meets its own control imperatives without compromising the requirements of the overall system. Unlike the centralized control system, the proposed control strategy is a distributed control system. The control algorithm for each of the agents is developed, and the pseudo code is presented. The results of the simulation of the proposed scheme are presented to confirm the usefulness of the new control approach.Originality/valueThe multi-agent concept for an energy management system is less addressed and thus its potential for efficient home energy management is presented. The proposed multi-agent strategy for a complete DC smart home with exclusive DC loads is not done earlier and is reported for the first time. The success of this strategy can be extended to other DC micro-grid systems like telecom power systems, ships, aircraft, datacentres, server rooms, residential complexes and commercial malls.

ESSO: An Energy Smart Service Function Chain Orchestrator

The rapid development of technologies such as photo-intensive social networks, on-demand video streaming, online gaming, and the Internet of Things (IoT) is causing a tremendous growth of traffic volume. Such large-scale expansion is leading to higher energy consumption and carbon footprint for the telecommunication industry. Governments are trying to minimize the environmental impact by introducing regulations and taxes; driving companies to use renewable energy. However, renewable energy is still not as cost-effective compared to traditional sources of energy ( i.e. , brown energy), and their availability varies significantly across time and geographic locations. Therefore, it is a challenge for telecommunication companies to comply with regulations and minimize carbon footprint without significantly increasing their operational cost. In this context, we propose an Energy Smart Service Function Chain Orchestrator called ESSO. ESSO reduces the overall carbon footprint of a telecommunication network by opportunistically adapting Service Function Chain (SFC) locations to utilize more energy at locations with surplus renewable energy. ESSO minimizes brown energy consumption by migrating SFCs across different locations. In addition, ESSO provisions SFC components in a manner that allows switches, switch ports, and servers to be put into low-power consumption state. Our trace-driven simulations on real ISP topologies show that considering the availability of renewable energy sources during SFC embedding even for a small-scale network can result in 2- $3\times $ reduction in carbon footprint.

The Role of Household Consumers in Adopting Renewable Energy Technologies in Kenya

In transition to a low-carbon economy, the adoption of renewable energy (RE) technologies by energy investors, power utilities and energy consumers is critical. In developing countries like Kenya with a high rate of urbanization, this transition requires urban and rural residents’ proactive responses to using renewable energy sources. In this regard, a better understanding of residents’ perceptions about renewable energy investment, RE sources availability, climate change, environmental conservation and other factors can lead to more efficient and sustainable implementation of renewable energy policies. This study investigates the role Kenya’s household energy consumers in urban and rural areas can play in adopting renewable energy technologies. To achieve this, a questionnaire survey was administered among 250 household consumers in Nairobi County, Makueni County, and Uasin Gishu County. Our survey analysis shows that about 84% of the respondents were interested in adopting renewable energy for their entire energy consumption mostly because of solving frequent power outages and high energy cost from the grid system. This perception did not have any correlations with income levels or any other socio-economic factors we identified. Furthermore, about 72% of the respondents showed their interests in producing and selling renewable energy to the national or local grids if government subsidies were readily available. Rural residents showed strong interests in adopting renewable energy technologies, especially solar PV solutions. However, the main impediment to their investment in renewable energy was the high cost of equipment (49%) and the intermittent nature of renewable energy (27%) resources.

Pengujian Kincir Air Hidrokinetik Undershoot Di Irigasi Limau Manis Padang

The power produced by a hydrokinetic turbine depends on the interaction between the rotor and water. Therefore, the optimal rotor geometry must be designed and built to capture maximum water energy and convert it into usable energy. Hydropower is one of the potential renewable energy that can contribute to the need for electricity. Hydropower generator is pollution free so this generator can answer environmental problems and the availability of renewable energy sources. The aim to be achieved in this study is to produce a turbine hydropower with good performance if it operates on an irrigation channel and is applied as a power plant. This research was developed to get the right specifications for the use of hydrokinetic turbines in the irrigation canal area. There are several methods carried out in the design of hydrokenetic turbines, namely by designing blades based on the shape of water flow, repairing the transmission system, and selecting the right generator. In this study, we tested the sweet lemon irrigate applied and tested in the area of ​​Padang Sumbar Sweet Limes Pauh, the results obtained were that the turbine can produce power of about 12.6 watts.

Production of potable water using desalination technologies powered by renewable energy systems could help solve water scarcity in remote areas with shortages of water or conventional energy sources, or in large cities with air pollution. Hybridization of solar and wind could increase the sustainability and availability of renewable energy sources and reduce energy costs. Additionally, hybridization of reverse osmosis (RO) and MSF could increase efficiency and desalinated water quality and decrease desalinated water cost. Materials and Methods: The research method in this paper is based on modeling, computer simulation, and optimization with MATLAB software, and manufacturing and evaluating the plant at the Tarbiat Modares University Renewable Energy Laboratory. Results: The process of manufacturing the MSF system, solar panel structure, and wind turbine was explained and modeling and optimization results were presented. Testing results of the plant were mentioned, as were the produced power of wind turbine simulated and plant performance evaluated under the environmental conditions of the Tehran region. The rate of fresh water production under changing feed water salinity was evaluated and the real costs of fresh water produced ($/m3) were estimated. At the end of this section, model results and test results were compared. Conclusion: Hybridization of RO and MSF systems with wind and solar energy resources led to increased system reliability and flexibility and higher produced drinking water quality. The desalinated water cost was 1.35 $/m3 in theory and 1.5 $/m3 for actual conditions. Hybridization of wind, solar, RO, and MSF showed proved the best choices to minimize water cost compared to fossil fuel RO or MSF, wind RO, wind MSF, solar RO, solar MSF, or fossil fuel RO-MSF. Hybridization of RO and MSF would result in better economics and operation characteristics than those corresponding to MSF. Water cost can be reduced by 23 to 26% of that of a sole MSF process and the amount of desalinated water produced by the hybrid RO-MSF system is much greater than that of MSF. A comparison of theory outputs and experimental test results showed very good agreement between measured and model data. The test results of the manufactured hybrid solar-wind RO-MSF justified theory results.

Design of a test rig for the simulation of startup procedures in main heat exchangers of air separation plants

Within the Kopernikus project “SynErgie”, the sub-project “FlexASU” investigates an enhancement of the load flexibility of air separation units with the goal of synchronizing their power consumption with the availability of renewable energy sources. The main heat exchanger of these plants was identified as a key component for a dynamic plant operation, because startup, shutdown and load-change procedures can lead to thermal stress and an increased lifetime consumption of the apparatus. Aluminum-brazed plate-fin heat exchangers (PFHE) are used in these plants because of their high process integration, low production cost and compact design.The main focus of this work, which is an extended version of Haider et al. (2018a), is the transient behavior of PFHE. The temperature profiles within a PFHE can be calculated, and a FEM-based model is available for investigation of the thermal stress induced by dynamic temperature changes in the apparatus. Hence, the reduction in lifetime due to certain dynamic plant operating scenarios can be estimated, and critical operating modes can be identified.For the further development of the model, a PFHE test rig is designed which is representative of extreme operating conditions in air separation units. A test scenario matching the conditions of plant startup after extended downtime in a cold state has been designed. The scenario leads to thermal stress that is expected to damage the PFHE within a few weeks of testing. The location of maximum stress in the FEM-model matches typical cracks observed in PFHE which have been exposed to severe thermal stress.

Efficient RES Penetration under Optimal Distributed Generation Placement Approach

In this paper, a novel version of the Optimal Distributed Generation Placement (ODGP) problem regarding the siting and sizing of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) units is presented, called Optimal RES placement (ORESP). Power losses constitute the objective function to be minimized, subject to operational constraints. The simultaneous installation of a mix of RESs is considered and the Capacity Factor (CF) ratio is used as an aid for taking into account: (a) the geographical characteristics of the area, in which the examined Distribution Network (DN) is placed, (b) the different weather conditions, and (c) the availability of RESs, all of that at the same time, while keeping the problem complexity at minimum. The contribution of this work is that the proposed methodology bypasses the weather uncertainties and, thus, the RESs’ power generation stochasticity and provides an adequate solution with minimum computational burden and time, since the proposed CF use allows solving the problem under a straightforward way. Unified Particle Swarm Optimization (uPSO) is used for solving ODGP and ORESP. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis regarding the CFs variations is performed and finally a comparison of the proposed method with a more realistic one is performed, to consolidate further the claims of this paper. The proposed method is evaluated on RES-region-modified 33- and 118 bus systems.

Intelligent energy management system for renewable energy driven ship

Utilisation of renewable energy sources (RES) is increasing day by day to reduce greenhouse emissions. The toxic emission from ship is the main concern in marine sector. Here, utilisation of renewable energy for propulsion and electrification of accessories in a ship are proposed. Microgrid with AC and DC bus is developed using solar panels, wind mills, fuel cell, diesel generator, and energy storage devices. Energy management system with two fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) is used to select and manage energy in the microgrid. Selection of source is decided by FLC1 based on the availability of RES. Generation of control pulses for inter-linking converters is decided by FLC2 based on variation in solar irradiance and wind velocity. The microgrid with RES is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The results show that uncertainty in RES can be handled by FLCs to provide a continuous power supply for transportation of ship and its accessories.

Optimal DG integration and network reconfiguration in microgrid system with realistic time varying load model using hybrid optimisation

The potential availability of renewable energy sources is unquestionable and the government is setting steep targets for renewable energy usage. Renewable-based DGs, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, mitigate global climate change, ensure energy security, and reduce emissions of CO 2 and other greenhouse gases. This study addresses microgrid system analysis with hybrid energy sources and reconfiguration simultaneously for efficient operation of the system. Microgrid zones are formulated categorically with the existing distribution system. In this study, wind, solar and small hydro-based DGs are considered. Uncertainties of renewable power generation and load are also taken care in the optimization problem. A multi-objective optimisation method proposed in this paper for optimal integration of renewable-based DGs and reconfiguration of the network to minimise power loss and maximise annual cost savings. Optimal location and sizes of DG units are determined using gravitational search algorithm and general algebraic modelling system respectively. Optimal reconfiguration of the microgrid system is obtained using genetic algorithm. Simulation results are obtained for the IEEE 33-bus system and compared with existing methods as available in the literature. Furthermore, this study has been carried out with a 24-hr time-varying distribution system. The simulation results show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique.

It is known that solar energy is among the most available and sustainable renewable sources of energy. This study utilised energy and exergy analyses to assess the performance of a building attached photovoltaic (BAPV) plant. The grid connected BAPV plant installed on the roof of an olive oil production company situated in Izmir, Turkey with a capacity of 701.2 kWp. Strings having a total of 21 monocrystalline solar modules constitute the BAPV system. In 2017, the plant was found to have an exergy efficiency around 12.49-15.76% while it was discovered that the sustainability indexes of the BAPV plant were in the region of 1.14-1.19. The module plane and the electricity produced, recorded annual solar irradiation of 1,561.32 kWh/(m2y) and 878.29 MWh/y, respectively. As a result of the values, this study recorded a mean annual electricity specific yield of 1,252.55 kWh/kWp and performance ratio of 81.86%.

Cost‐minimizing online algorithm for internet green data centers on multi‐source energy

SummaryHuge energy consumption of large‐scale cloud data centers damages environments with excessive carbon emission. More and more data center operators are seeking to reduce carbon footprint via various types of renewable energy. However, the intermittent availability of renewable energy sources makes it quite challenging to cooperate with dynamically arriving workload. Meanwhile, the different natures (eg, price and carbon emission) of multiple energy sources also bring more challenges to achieve an optimal trade‐off among carbon emission, power cost, and service level agreement (SLA). In this paper, we study the problem of reducing the long‐term energy cost for geo‐distributed cloud centers, where multiple sources of renewable energy are considered and SLA requirement and carbon budget are satisfied. To tackle the randomness of workload arrival, varying electricity price, and intermittent supply of renewable energy, we first formulate the cost minimization problem as a constraint stochastic optimization problem. Second, based on Lyapunov optimization technique, we propose an online control algorithm to solve it and provide the rigorous theory analysis to demonstrate its performance. By converting the long‐term optimization problem to a mixed integer linear programming problem in each time slot, we analyze its inherent structure and propose an efficient algorithm to solve it based on Brenner's method. Our proposed algorithm makes online decisions rely only on the current system state and achieve cost emission trade‐off. Finally, the effectiveness of our algorithm is evaluated by extensive simulations based on real‐world data traces.

Design of a Test Rig for the Simulation of Startup Procedures in Main Heat Exchangers of Air Separation Plants

Aluminium brazed plate fin heat exchangers (PFHE) are used in these plants because of their high process integration, low production cost and compact design. Finding the optimum operating scheme for the rectification columns depends on detailed knowledge of their effect on the lifetime of the PFHE.The transient behavior of temperature profiles within a PFHE can be calculated and a FEM-based model is available to investigate the thermal stress induced by dynamic temperature changes in the apparatus. Hence, the reduction of lifetime due to certain dynamic plant operating scenarios can be estimated and critical operating modes can be identified. For further development of the model, a PFHE test rig is designed which is representative for extreme operating conditions in air separation units. A test scenario matching the conditions of plant startup after extended downtime in cold condition has been designed. To reach a level of thermal stress comparable to industrial sized plants, the PFHE weighing around 1.5 tons is heated up to 50 °C before rapidly being cooled down by a stream of gaseous nitrogen at -173 °C in a cyclic operation scheme. This test scenario leads to thermal stress that is expected to damage the PFHE within a few weeks of testing and the location of maximum thermal stress in the FEM model matches typical cracks observed in PFHE of air separation units. The test rig is designed to gain a clearer understanding of the underlying damage mechanism and to evaluate measures for lowering thermal stress in further test series. The knowledge gained from the experimental investigations is crucial for maximizing the operation flexibility of an ASU plant.

Present scenario of renewable energy sources in Mymensingh and Pabna districts

The study was carried out to investigate the present scenario of renewable energy sources in Pabna and Mymensingh districts. Data were collected by interviewing 120 randomly selected respondents in each study areas during the period of September 2016 to July 2017. It was observed that available sources of renewable energy were mainly solar, biogas and biomass in both districts. Data were collected based on various independent and dependent variables. The findings revealed that 53.3% respondents in Pabna and 63.3% respondents in Mymensingh showed positive response to renewable energy sources. It was also observed that 38.3% respondents of Pabna had medium and 41.7% respondents of Mymensingh had high familiarity with renewable energy sources. The majority of the respondents commented that biomass energy in Pabna and biogas energy in Mymensingh was the most cost effective sources and the major contribution to energy comes from mainly biogas in Pabna and solar energy in Mymensingh. Besides, a questionnaire survey was done in different GOs and NGOs which involving for creating public awareness and community level sources maintenance in both districts. The most effective strategy of the organization is education and capacity building program in Pabna and in Mymensingh it was renewable energy markets, financing mechanism. The most effective awareness program was found campaigning in Pabna and in Mymensingh it was direct consultation. Survey result showed that 50% organization provided medium amount of loan (5000-8000) in Pabna and in Mymensingh it was 65%. The most effective training program was found customer training in Pabna district and in case of Mymensingh district it was customer motivating training. The majority of the respondents’ percept that government should provide more subsidies to make renewable sources more affordable in case of both study area. The most of the respondents’ percept that saving money was most important for using renewable energy sources in Pabna and in Mymensingh it was availability of renewable energy sources. Therefore, the GO and the NGO should work hand in hand to emphasize more on renewable energy source to produce electricity to solve their power crisis problem.Progressive Agriculture 29 (2): 71-81, 2018

A Stochastic ADMM Approach to Distributed Coordinated Multicell Beamforming for Renewables Powered Wireless Cellular Networks

The availability of renewable energy sources (RES) has facilitated efficient and sustainable resource allocation for wireless communication systems. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to implement coordinated multicell beamforming (CMBF) scheme for cellular networks powered by a smart microgrid, where the BSs are equipped with RES harvesting devices and can buy/sell energy from/to the main grid. New models are developed to capture the stochastic energy harvesting, dynamic electricity prices, and energy transaction cost gauged by the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) function. Based upon these models, a distributed CMBF scheme is put forth to minimize the grid-wide transaction cost under user quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. Specifically, it is shown that the relevant task can be cast into a convex program to be tackled in a distributed fashion, leveraging the state of the art optimization tools. To deal with the unpredictable nature of the renewable energy, the stochastic alternating direction method of multipliers is then employed to develop a novel distributed CMBF scheme. It is established that the proposed scheme can guarantee optimality of the obtained CMBF solution, using only local channel state information at each BS and limited information exchange among the BSs. Merits of the proposed scheme are corroborated by extensive numerical results.

Improving the Efficiency of DASC by Adding CeO2/CUO Hybrid Nanoparticles in Water

Solar energy is the abundantly available source of renewable energy with least impact on environment. Direct absorption solar collector (DASC) is the commonly used device to absorb heat directly from sun and make use of it for different heating applications. In the past, many experiments have been done to increase the efficiency of DASC using nanofluids. In this paper, an examination of solar collector efficiency for hybrid CeO2/CuO-water (0.1% by volume) nanofluid under various flow rates and proportions of CeO2/CUO nanoparticles is investigated. The experiments were conducted at flow rates spanning from 20 cc/min to 100 cc/min and with CeO2/CUO nanoparticles proportions of 1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1, 0.5:1, and 0:1. The efficiency increases from 16.5% to 51.6% when the flow rate is increased from 20 cc/min to 100 cc/min for hybrid CeO2/CuO(1:1)-water nanofluid. The results also showed an increase in efficiency of 13.8, 18.1, 24.3, 24.9 and 26.1% with hybrid combination of CeO2/CUO at ratios 1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1, 0.5:1, and 0:1 respectively in comparison with water at a flow rate of 100 cc/min.

Design Optimization of a Small-Scale Polygeneration Energy System in Different Climate Zones in Iran

Design and performance of polygeneration energy systems are highly influenced by several variables, including the climate zone, which can affect the load profile as well as the availability of renewable energy sources. To investigate the effects, in this study, the design of a polygeneration system for identical residential buildings that are located in three different climate zones in Iran has been investigated. To perform the study, a model has previously developed by the author is used. The performance of the polygeneration system in terms of energy, economy and environment were compared to each other. The results show significant energetic and environmental benefits of the implementation of polygeneration systems in Iran, especially in the building that is located in a hot climate, with a high cooling demand and a low heating demand. Optimal polygeneration system for an identical building has achieved a 27% carbon dioxide emission reduction in the cold climate, while this value is around 41% in the hot climate. However, when considering the price of electricity and gas in the current energy market in Iran, none of the systems are feasible and financial support mechanisms or other incentives are required to promote the application of decentralized polygeneration energy systems.

While the incineration of biomass residues is gaining traction as a globally available source of renewable energy, the resulting ash is often landfilled, resulting in the disposal of what could otherwise be used in value-added products. This research focuses on the beneficial use of predominantly rice husk and sugarcane bagasse-based mixed biomass ashes, obtained from two paper mills in northern India. A cementitious binder was formulated from biomass ash, clay, and hydrated lime (70:20:10 by mass, respectively) using 2M NaOH solution at a liquid-to-solid mass ratio of 0.40. Compressive strength of the biomass ash binder increased linearly with compaction pressure, indicating the role of packing density. Between the two mixed biomass ashes used in this study, the one with higher amorphous content resulted in a binder with higher strength and denser reaction product. Multi-faceted characterization of the biomass ash binder indicated the presence of aluminum-substituted calcium silicate hydrate, mainly derived from the pozzolanic reaction.
