Consumer Perceptions of Organic Products: A Study in Birendranagar, Surkhet

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how consumers in Birendranagar, Surkhet, Nepal, perceive organic products. It aims to uncover variables influencing customers' purchasing decisions in the area and offer insightful information on the market demand for organic products.
 Method/ Design: A convenience sampling method was used to gather the data where 200 respondents were given a survey questionnaire in the study region. The goal of the survey was to learn about the attitudes, convictions, and perceptions of consumers regarding organic products.
 Findings: The findings show that various key factors remarkably impact consumer perception towards organic products. These factors include awareness and knowledge of organic products, perceived benefits of organic products, price sensitivity, trust in organic labeling and certification, and the availability of organic products in the market.
 Practical Implications: The findings of this study provide useful and practical insights for businesses operating in the organic products market. Increasing consumer awareness about the health and environmental benefits of organic products and ensuring the availability of such products in the market can play an important role in expanding organic products market. Businesses can use this information to tailor their marketing strategies and product offerings to better meet consumer preferences.
 Originality/Limitation of the Study: This study contributes to the growing body of research on consumer perception of organic products, particularly in the context of Birendranagar Surkhet, Nepal. It's crucial to remember that this study's conclusions are unique to this area and might not apply to other places. An expanded comprehension of consumer behavior about organic products can be obtained through additional study conducted in various geographic regions.

Causes of farmers’ aversion to organic vegetable production in Shyamnagar and Kaligonj Upazilla of Bangladesh

Agriculture is an ongoing changing field where farmers constantly change production technology by adopting different updated modern practices. The study explores the motivating factors influencing farmers to switch to synthetic pesticides dependent on farming from organic farming methods. The main factors are the lower price of organic vegetables, pesticide availability, social responsibility and economic considerations. The most challenging AEZ -13 coastal Satkhira has been taken for this study. The result shows that farmers who choose to switch give high importance to the production cost, price of organic vegetables, supply of bio-product, and availability of organic products than the moral, economic and social concerns. Understanding the factors limiting organic consumption: the effect of marketing channel on produce price, availability, and price fairness

Organic food consumption is increasing globally but still comprises a small share of the overall food market. Our understanding of organic consumption is primarily based on consumer surveys, while we lack robust data on the actual price and availability of organic products in most countries. To address this gap, we conducted a case study where we collected data directly from produce sellers in Seville, Spain, to evaluate the extent to which price, availability, and farmer price fairness potentially limit organic consumption in marketing channels with short food supply chains (SFSCs) and long food supply chains (LFSCs). Price of a family produce basket was not significantly different between conventional LFSC and organic SFSC channels. Organic produce was more available in SFSC than LFSC channels by an average of 14 weeks. Price fairness, measured as farmers’ share of the value added, was higher in organic SFSC than organic LFSC and conventional LFSC channels. These results suggest that consumers in Seville can avoid the higher prices and lower availability of organic produce in supermarkets and ensure farmers greater revenue share by switching to organic SFSC channels like farmer-consumer cooperatives and direct sellers. However, the scarcity of such information for most products and markets limits consumers’ ability to ascertain the economic and social benefits of different channels. This study highlights the need for systematic data collection and sharing from different marketing channels to better inform consumers about their food purchasing options and improve understanding of the factors limiting organic consumption.

A Study of Business Challenges for Organic Food Product segment

Organic agriculture is booming in India these days. An increase in the family income, increase in educated population, health consciousness has led consumers to shift their preferences from conventional to organic food products. Due to its purity and health benefits, organic food products are gaining popularity in the Indian market. The availability of organic products is increasing at malls, specialty stores, and local markets places. This paper focuses on the organic food product segment and the business challenges for this segment.

Current situation, potentials and prospects for the development of organic farming in Sumadija

Sumadija is rich in natural potentials which provide a good basis for the future development of organic farming, given the fact that natural resources are limited. The composition and structure of natural resources are highly suitable for organic production. The region's relatively unpolluted land, favourable climate, abundant water resources and preserved biodiversity are some of the main organic farming requirements satisfied. Organic production is not possible without ensuring at least a minimum level of preservation of natural resources in areas where organic farming is practised; on the other hand, organic production itself has a positive effect on the preservation and improvement of environmental quality in these areas. Small plots of land can be advantageous for this production, particularly in upland areas, and used specifically for organic production as the conversion period is short. They can be used for vegetable farming because the soil is uncontaminated owing to distance from roads. Positive experience indicates that potatoes, rye, oats and root vegetables can be successfully grown in these areas. Another advantage is the wealth of indigenous cultivars of apples, pears and plums which are highly resistant to pathogenic pests and environmental conditions, and hence suitable for cultivation without the use of mineral fertilisers and chemical agents. Major issues currently facing organic farming are a small-scale organic market and low prices of organic products, a low level of consumer awareness of the advantages of organic farming, suspicion and ignorance, low purchasing power, low availability of organic products through sales channels, etc.

Differences in the Financial Management of Conventional, Organic, and Biodynamic Farms

Abstract The financial management of conventional, organic, and biodynamic farms was evaluated and compared. It is a highly specific issue filling in the gap namely in the area of economic research of biodynamic agriculture. Biodynamic agriculture is a less widespread concept of agriculture, the management of which meets the requirements of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture has still been gaining in importance in the Czech Republic, the number of organic farms has been growing, and availability of organic products has increased, too. Of the Czech farms receiving subsidies from the EU or state subsidies in 2007-2012, a total of 389 were selected for analysis (273 of which were conventional farms, 112 organic farms, and 4 farms were engaged in biodynamic agriculture). Subsidies, Total Costs, Operating Revenue, Profit and Gross Value Added indicators were selected for evaluation. The individual indicators within groups of companies were compared by means of a t-test. The analysis revealed significant differences in the economic indicators of individual types of farms. It was observed that organic enterprises have better economic results than conventional and biodynamic businesses. Subsidies help all types of farms achieve better results. We may hence assume dependence of these farms on subsidies.

Quality and availability of organic foods by Slovak consumers

The increasing consumer demand for organic products caused that the organic food market has expanded in all continents of the world. Organic foods represent a specific segment of the food market. Currently land area farmed organically in Slovakia represents 9% of the total agricultural land. In this work we identified organic foods purchase by Slovak consumers, the availability, reasons of purchase and quality assortment of organic foods at the Slovak market. Questionnaire survey involved 271 respondents. The Hierarchical multiple factor analysis was used for the segregation and classification of consumers into representative groups. The group of respondents was based on algorithms divided into three groups. In the first group of respondents, prevalent are responses that assortment is not sufficient and no answer, in the second group think that organic food assortment is not sufficient, and in the third group of respondents also dominates opinion that is not sufficient. At the question of organic food quality in all three groups is prevalent opinion that it is rather high, in the first group nearly the third of respondents considered the quality of organic foods as rather low, in the second group of respondents is rate: „rather low“ response and „rather high“ almost equal. In the third group of respondents strongly dominated response that the quality of organic food is rather high. Regarding the availability of organic products at the Slovak market, 16% of respondents considered it to be sufficient, 54% of consumers considered assortment as not enough available for all. We also analyzed the reasons of buying organic food. 42% of respondents reported that the main reason for buying organic food is a concern for the environment and landscape, 33% of respondents state it is a pleasure and the opportunity to try something unusual, 11% reported confidence in the quality of organic food and 7% their health care. Environmental education in the family since childhood and the opinions of friends significantly influence consumers when buying food and organic food. We assume that, organic food will be processed minimally in the future. Consumer demand for organic food we recommend to increase by increased support of the direct sales, informing about quality of organic foods and their beneficial effects on the human body at basic and secondary schools, organizing of excursions to organic farms and processing companies.

  This article analyzes the determinants of consumers’ willingness-to-pay premium for organic tomatoes and explores the production potential. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize consumption characteristics and a logit model was used to understand the socioeconomic factors affecting consumers' choices. Results indicated that consumers are willing to pay higher prices for organic vegetables. This willingness varied with four socioeconomic variables: Age, income, education, and wife’s employment status and two opinion variables, namely shape and availability of organic products. There is a need to bolster consumers’ confidence in organic labels and to inform them about the availability of such products in the market.   Key words: Willingness-to-pay, organic vegetables, logit model, market.

Consumers’ Intent: In the Organic Food Market

ABSTRACT This paper examines the determinants that influence consumers' intention to purchase organic products. Ajzen's theory of planned behaviour (TPB) provides the conceptual framework of the research and the appropriateness of the theory is tested. A survey of 144 consumers was used to determine the beliefs which determine consumers’ intent to purchase organic food. Furthermore, attitudes, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were examined to determine whether they affect consumers’ intention to make organic products purchases. The findings offer considerable support for the robustness of the TPB in explaining intention in the sample. In addition, empirical evidence suggest that price, availability of organic products, product information and the subjective opinions of others are important determinants of consumers intent to buy organic products. The results are consistent with previous research.

Organic dairy farming in Europe

Organic milk production has gained importance in Europe. The European Union introduced regulations to standardise organic production throughout all member countries. The market for organic products is constantly increasing and still has not reached market stability. The differential price of organic products could maintain farms in marginal environments. In many cases, the market is still encouraging as the limit seems to be the availability of organic products. There is a large body of research comparing organic and conventional livestock farming systems, but most of them ignore local and specific factors. Different feeding systems characterise organic and conventional farming. Limits of the use of concentrates in the feed ration diminish production levels of milk. Quality of dairy products has not been changed in European dairy farming by the application of organic regulations. The more “natural” dairy management in organic farms is felt to improve animal welfare and animal health. However, reality does not always resemble this common belief. A greater use of pasture vs. more intensive dairy system for conventional herds certainly improves animal welfare, but because of the limit to drug use in organic systems, animal health is not always enhanced. Organic farming systems are more “environment-friendly” than conventional management, especially for the lower eutrophication potential of organic herds. Nevertheless, in organic production, the same amount of milk is obtained by exploiting a larger area of pasture.
