Methadone treatment of opiate dependence in Canada.

SummaryAlthough methadone has been used in Canada for the treatment of opiate‐dependent persons since 1959, information concerning its use in Canada is limited. Methadone treatment in Canada is discussed with respect to national and provincial drug laws, public and professional support for the treatment, patient characteristics, and the sources and types of illicit and licit opiates abused. The paper also reports on the results of a survey of the physicians in Canada who were authorized during 1981–82 to prescribe methadone to opiate‐dependent persons. These physicians were asked to provide information on the number of patients they treated with methadone during the previous 12 months, their indications) for the use of methadone, the dosages used and duration of treatment, and the auxiliary treatments provided. Information concerning specific provincial methadone treatment programmes is also presented.

A MODIFIED ISOLATION TECHNIQUE FOR CHLAMYDIA PSITTACI IN L‐CELLS TREATED WITH CYCLOHEXIMIDE AND GLUCOCORTICOID

Various auxiliary treatments of L-cells employed for the isolation and cultivation of C. psittaci were investigated in order to develop an improved method for the detection of the agent, in addition to the aid obtained by centrifugation and cycloheximide treatment. Glucocorticoid treatment increased the observed number of inclusions considerably through a preservative effect on host cells and enhanced an spontaneous re-infection. Besides, the hormone made the scanning of cell culture for inclusions more convenient through an altered cell morphology. This method was tested with two extreme species types that differed as regards cytopathogenicity and growth rate. The length of the cultivation period was of great importance for the diagnostic result. Especially the cytopathogenic agent-type influenced the optimal time of cell culture fixation, which was situated around 48 or 88 hours post infection (h p.i.). Owing to the cytotoxicity of field samples (milk secretion), the cell culture technique (48 h p.i.) was less sensitive compared to the conventional isolation method in embryonated eggs. However, a different sampling technique improved the result, and simultaneous use of the secondary multiplication cycle of chlamydia (88 h p.i.) makes the less cumbersome cell culture technic recommendable.

SOME ORGANIC MATTER-CLAY MINERAL RELATIONSHIPS IN FOUR ALBERTA SOIL PROFILES

Four soil profiles were characterized as to nitrogen, carbon, clay and polysaccharide content. Direct extractions of the soils were also made with 1N HF-HCl and an acetic anhydride-pyridine mixture and 1.0 N NaOH. Two NaOH extractions of the lower horizons, with and without auxiliary acidic treatments between the first and second to facilitate the release of organic matter, were used to evaluate certain clay-organic matter relationships.Polysaccharide content and the C:N ratios generally decreased with depth in all soils. Of the direct extractants of organic matter NaOH was the most efficient and HF-HCl and acetic anhydride-pyridine solutions were generally ineffective. However, some accumulation of HF-HCl soluble organic matter was noted in the A2 and B2 horizons of two of the soils. The organic solvents were most effective in removing organic matter from the B2 horizons.The use of auxiliary treatments (HF-HCl, H2SO4 or both) between the first and second NaOH extractions greatly enhanced the release of the organic matter by the second NaOH extraction from the B2, Bsa and C horizons of these soils. With the exception of the A2 horizons a combined HF-HCl 2nd H2SO4 pretreatment was superior to HF-HCl or H2SO4 used alone. The retentive capacity of the clay for soil organic matter was greatest in the C and Bsa horizons as determined by the intensity of the extracting conditions necessary to effect solubilization of the organic matter into the second alkali solutions.

During the world-round trip from June to September in 1959, the author observed the recent tendency of the treatments of radioactive liquid wastes in Europe and U.S.A. The conclusions are as follows:(1) Low level wastes (<10-4μc/ml) is mainly treated by the chemical coagulation, quite economically.(2) The evaporation method is applied to medium and high level wastes and the methods of coagulation and ion-exchange are used as auxiliary treatments.(3) It is urgent to settle the best procedure to treat high level wastes.(4) We must be careful to adapt these foreign technics directly for our treatment, because we have different and complicated conditions, i.e. narrow territory, dense population, many calamities and special sensibilities of people hating radioactivity. We must acquire more budget for these sorts of plants and equipments in order to assure our coming progress in atomic age.
