A Rubric for the Detection of Students in Crisis

AbstractFor some students, standardized tests serve as a conduit to disclose sensitive issues of harm or distress that may otherwise go unreported. By detecting this writing, known as crisis papers, testing programs have a unique opportunity to assist in mitigating the risk of harm to these students. The use of machine learning to automatically detect such writing is necessary in the context of online tests and automated scoring. To achieve a detection system that is accurate, humans must first consistently label the data that are used to train the model. This paper argues that the existing guidelines are not sufficient for this task and proposes a three‐level rubric to guide the collection of the training data. In showcasing the fundamental machine learning procedures for creating an automatic text classification system, the following evidence emerges as support of the operational use of this rubric. First, hand‐scorers largely agree with one another in assigning labels to text according to the rubric. Additionally, when this labeled data are used to train a baseline classifier, the model exhibits promising performance. Recommendations are made for improving the hand‐scoring training process, with the ultimate goal of quickly and accurately assisting students in crisis.

Grau de pertencimento como insumo para classificação automática de textos: uma abordagem sintática

Grouping documents into categories is one of the solutions adopted to streamline the information retrieval process, which is increasingly relevant due to the large amount of information available today. The manual localization of documents of a specific theme, available in digital repositories, involves reading the title, abstract and keywords, in addition to further detailed evaluation in order to identify whether the publication belongs to the desired thematic axis. Considering the number of publications in a digital repository, manually locating all the desired texts on a given topic can be laborious and time-consuming. This research proposes an architecture for automatic classification of texts that is based on syntactic questions, that is, it undertakes a comparison of n-grams, which are combinations of n-pairs of words that are identified throughout the text. An exploratory applied research was carried out, which applied a type of supervised learning, fundamentally based on the document representation model called bag-of-words (BoW). The paper’s macro objective was to classify texts in general, according to pre-defined categories, by generating and comparing degrees of belonging between texts, as one of the key criteria. The results of these comparisons, using n-gram = 3, demonstrate that in the use of classifications by n-grams, the greater the number of grams, and with the removal of the stop words, we obtain a reduced degree of belonging, demonstrating greater rigor in identifying the match during the classification. In order to have greater confidence in the results, a larger training corpus is necessary to expand the number of words that characterize the pre-defined categories, to be used in the classification of the texts.

Knowledge-driven graph similarity for text classification

Automatic text classification using machine learning is significantly affected by the text representation model. The structural information in text is necessary for natural language understanding, which is usually ignored in vector-based representations. In this paper, we present a graph kernel-based text classification framework which utilises the structural information in text effectively through the weighting and enrichment of a graph-based representation. We introduce weighted co-occurrence graphs to represent text documents, which weight the terms and their dependencies based on their relevance to text classification. We propose a novel method to automatically enrich the weighted graphs using semantic knowledge in the form of a word similarity matrix. The similarity between enriched graphs, knowledge-driven graph similarity, is calculated using a graph kernel. The semantic knowledge in the enriched graphs ensures that the graph kernel goes beyond exact matching of terms and patterns to compute the semantic similarity of documents. In the experiments on sentiment classification and topic classification tasks, our knowledge-driven similarity measure significantly outperforms the baseline text similarity measures on five benchmark text classification datasets.

Text categorization: past and present

Automatic text categorization is the operation of sorting out the text documents into pre-defined text categories using some machine learning algorithms. Normally, it defines the most important approaches to organizing and making the use of a large volume of information exists in unstructured form. Nowadays, text categorization is becoming an extensively researched field of text mining and processing of languages. Word sense, semantic relationships among terms, text documents and categories are quite essential in order of enhancing the performances of categorization. Various surveys on text categorization have already been available which involve techniques of various text representation schemes to such extent but do not include several approaches that have been explored in text categorization over the standard techniques. Here, an exhaustive analysis of different text categorization approaches over the conventional approaches has been undertaken. This survey paper explores a wide variety of algorithms used for categorizing text documents and tries to assemble the existing works into three basic fields: conventional methods, fuzzy logic-based methods, deep learning-based methods. Further, conventional methods have been categorized into three fields: text categorization using handcrafted features, text categorization using nature-inspired algorithms and text categorization using graph-based methods. Furthermore, this survey provides a clear idea about the available libraries used for different algorithms, availability of datasets, categorization technologies explored in various non-Indian and Indian languages as well.

Combining Embeddings of Input Data for Text Classification

The problem of automatic text classification is an essential part of text analysis. The improvement of text classification can be done at different levels such as a preprocessing step, network implementation, etc. In this paper, we focus on how the combination of different methods of text encoding may affect classification accuracy. To do this, we implemented a multi-input neural network that is able to encode input text using several text encoding techniques such as BERT, neural embedding layer, GloVe, skip-thoughts and ParagraphVector. The text can be represented at different levels of tokenised input text such as the sentence level, word level, byte pair encoding level and character level. Experiments were conducted on seven datasets from different language families: English, German, Swedish and Czech. Some of those languages contain agglutinations and grammatical cases. Two out of seven datasets originated from real commercial scenarios: (1) classifying ingredients into their corresponding classes by means of a corpus provided by Northfork; and (2) classifying texts according to the English level of their corresponding writers by means of a corpus provided by ProvenWord. The developed architecture achieves an improvement with different combinations of text encoding techniques depending on the different characteristics of the datasets. Once the best combination of embeddings at different levels was determined, different architectures of multi-input neural networks were compared. The results obtained with the best embedding combination and best neural network architecture were compared with state-of-the-art approaches. The results obtained with the dataset used in the experiments were better than the state-of-the-art baselines.

Automatic text classification using machine learning and optimization algorithms

In the recent years, the volume of text documents in the form of digital way has grown up extremely in size. As significance, there is a need to be competent to automatically bring together and classify the documents based on their content. The main goal of text classification is to partition the unstructured set of documents into their respective categories based on its content. The main aim of this research work is to automatically classify the documents which are stored in the personal computer into their relevant categories. This work has two significant phases. In the first phase, the important features are selected for classification and the second phase is the classification of text documents. For selecting the optimal features, this research work proposes a new algorithm, optimization technique for feature selection (OTFS) algorithm. To estimate the proficiency of proposed feature selection algorithm, the OTFS algorithm was compared with the existing approaches artificial bee colony, firefly algorithm, ant colony optimization and particle swarm optimization. In the second phase, this research work proposed machine learning-based automatic text classification (MLearn-ATC) algorithm for text classification. In classification, the MLearn-ATC algorithm was compared with widely used classification techniques probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, K-nearest neighbor and Naive Bayes. From this, the output of first phase is used as the input for classification phase. The decisive results establish that the proposed algorithms achieve the better accuracy for optimizing the features and classifying the text documents based on their content.

Comparative study of the Performance of Machine Learning Text Classifiers Applied to Afaan Oromo Text

The aim of this study is to find the optimal method that can be used to classify Afaan Oromo text among different classifier by using the same number of text document. Automatic text classification has been needed in many fields for a long time. Many methods are used to classify text. The performance of this classifier we used in this study is measured in terms of recall, precision and F-measure. Finally we compare the efficiencies of the Bayesian Network, Naïve Bayesian, IBK and SMO to classify Afaan Oromo text. Experimental results on the same set of Afaan Oromo documents used before show that SMO slightly outperforms the other methods. Comparison reported in this paper shows that the SMO classifier exceeds the other four Machine learning classifier.

A Comparison of Traditional Machine Learning Approaches for Supervised Feedback Classification in Bahasa Indonesia

The advancement of machine learning and natural language processing techniques hold essential opportunities to improve the existing software engineering activities, including the requirements engineering activity. Instead of manually reading all submitted user feedback to understand the evolving requirements of their product, developers could use the help of an automatic text classification program to reduce the required effort. Many supervised machine learning approaches have already been used in many fields of text classification and show promising results in terms of performance. This paper aims to implement NLP techniques for the basic text preprocessing, which then are followed by traditional (non-deep learning) machine learning classification algorithms, which are the Logistics Regression, Decision Tree, Multinomial Naïve Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbors, Linear SVC, and Random Forest classifier. Finally, the performance of each algorithm to classify the feedback in our dataset into several categories is evaluated using three F1 Score metrics, the macro-, micro-, and weighted-average F1 Score. Results show that generally, Logistics Regression is the most suitable classifier in most cases, followed by Linear SVC. However, the performance gap is not large, and with different configurations and requirements, other classifiers could perform equally or even better.

FasTag: Automatic text classification of unstructured medical narratives.

Unstructured clinical narratives are continuously being recorded as part of delivery of care in electronic health records, and dedicated tagging staff spend considerable effort manually assigning clinical codes for billing purposes. Despite these efforts, however, label availability and accuracy are both suboptimal. In this retrospective study, we aimed to automate the assignment of top-level International Classification of Diseases version 9 (ICD-9) codes to clinical records from human and veterinary data stores using minimal manual labor and feature curation. Automating top-level annotations could in turn enable rapid cohort identification, especially in a veterinary setting. To this end, we trained long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNNs) on 52,722 human and 89,591 veterinary records. We investigated the accuracy of both separate-domain and combined-domain models and probed model portability. We established relevant baseline classification performances by training Decision Trees (DT) and Random Forests (RF). We also investigated whether transforming the data using MetaMap Lite, a clinical natural language processing tool, affected classification performance. We showed that the LSTM-RNNs accurately classify veterinary and human text narratives into top-level categories with an average weighted macro F1 score of 0.74 and 0.68 respectively. In the “neoplasia” category, the model trained on veterinary data had a high validation accuracy in veterinary data and moderate accuracy in human data, with F1 scores of 0.91 and 0.70 respectively. Our LSTM method scored slightly higher than that of the DT and RF models. The use of LSTM-RNN models represents a scalable structure that could prove useful in cohort identification for comparative oncology studies. Digitization of human and veterinary health information will continue to be a reality, particularly in the form of unstructured narratives. Our approach is a step forward for these two domains to learn from and inform one another.

Design and Implementation of Grievance Filing Application using Automatic Text Classification

This research aims to design a Grievance Filing System built using automatic text classification without any manual interruption. Various methodologies are followed to achieve it and are implemented. Performance of the different algorithms is discussed. People are less aware about the lengthy methods for lodging complaints. We propose a simplified process of enrolling grievances to ministries. The system accepts grievances in recorded voice form. The system is designed for Marathi language. Input in the form of speech will ease people’s comfort for lodging grievances. We present a model where voice is first preprocessed, followed by text classification using deep learning approaches such as CNN and LSTM, the grievances will be sent to respective ministry. This system can be used by government ministries to get grievances from common people through a simplified process. User will be notified on the progress of their lodged complaint and on its successful resolution by respective ministry.

Using a neural network-based feature extraction method to facilitate citation screening for systematic reviews

Citation screening is a labour-intensive part of the process of a systematic literature review that identifies citations eligible for inclusion in the review. In this paper, we present an automatic text classification approach that aims to prioritise eligible citations earlier than ineligible ones and thus reduces the manual labelling effort that is involved in the screening process. e.g. by automatically excluding lower ranked citations. To improve the performance of the text classifier, we develop a novel neural network-based feature extraction method. Unlike previous approaches to citation screening that employ unsupervised feature extraction methods to address a supervised classification task, our proposed method extracts document features in a supervised setting. In particular, our method generates a feature representation for documents, which is explicitly optimised to discriminate between eligible and ineligible citations.The generated document representation is subsequently used to train a text classifier.Experiments show that our feature extraction method obtains average workload savings of 56% when evaluated across 23 medical systematic reviews. The proposed method outperforms 10 baseline feature extraction methods by approximately 6% in terms of the WSS@95% metric.

Ontology-based enriched concept graphs for medical document classification

The rapidly increasing volume of medical text data, including biomedical literature and clinical records, presents difficulties to biomedical researchers and clinical practitioners. Automatic text classification is an important means for managing medical text data. The main challenge in medical text classification is the complex terminology used in these documents. Therefore, it is critical to handle synonymy, polysemy, and multi-word concepts so that classification is based on the meaning of these documents. The solution to this problem of complex terminology helps in building systems with better access to relevant data, resulting in more effective utilisation of the existing information. In this paper, we present a simple and effective approach to address this challenge. A concept graph is automatically constructed and enriched for each medical text document with the help of a domain-specific similarity matrix that is built using Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts in the training documents. Medical text documents are compared based on their enriched concept graphs using a graph kernel. Classification is then done based on the comparison result. The benefit of this approach is that it allows the incorporation of domain knowledge into the classification framework. The experiments on biomedical abstracts and clinical reports classification show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Based on evaluation metrics of precision, recall and F1-scores, our method achieves a significantly higher classification performance than other widely used similarity measures for similarity-based text classification.

Hierarchical Afaan Oromoo News Text Classification

The advancement of the present day technology enables the production of huge amount of information. Retrieving useful information out of these huge collections necessitates proper organization and structuring. Automatic text classification is an inevitable solution in this regard. However, the present approach focuses on the flat classification, where each topic is treated as a separate class, which is inadequate in text classification where there are a large number of classes and a huge number of relevant features needed to distinguish between them.This paper explores the use of hierarchical structure for classifying a large, heterogeneous collection of Afaan oromoo News Text. The approach utilizes the hierarchical topic structure to decompose the classification task into a set of simpler problems, one at each node in the classification tree. An experiment had been conducted using a categorical data collected from Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) using SVM to see the performances of the hierarchical classifiers on Afaan Oromoo News Text. The findings of the experiment show the accuracy of flat classification decreases as the number of classes and documents (features) increases. Moreover, the accuracy of the flat classifier decreases at an increasing number of top feature set. The peak accuracy of the flat classifier was 68.84 % when the top 3 features were used. The findings of the experiment done using hierarchical classification show an increasing performance of the classifiers as we move down the hierarchy. The maximum accuracy achieved was 90.37% at level-3(last level) of the category tree. Moreover, the accuracy of the hierarchical classifiers increases at an increasing number of top feature set compared to the flat classifier. The peak accuracy was 89.06% using level three classifier when the top 15 features were used.Furthermore, the performance between flat classifier and hierarchical classifiers are compared using the same test data. Thus, it shows that use of the hierarchical structure during classification has resulted in a significant improvement of 29.42 % in exact match precision when compared with a flat classifier. Automated text classification of near-misses from safety reports: An improved deep learning approach

Examining past near-miss reports can provide us with information that can be used to learn about how we can mitigate and control hazards that materialise on construction sites. Yet, the process of analysing near-miss reports can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. However, automatic text classification using machine learning and ontology-based approaches can be used to mine reports of this nature. Such approaches tend to suffer from the problem of weak generalisation, which can adversely affect the classification performance. To address this limitation and improve classification accuracy, we develop an improved deep learning-based approach to automatically classify near-miss information contained within safety reports using Bidirectional Transformers for Language Understanding (BERT). Our proposed approach is designed to pre-train deep bi-directional representations by jointly extracting context features in all layers. We validate the effectiveness and feasibility of our approach using a database of near-miss reports derived from actual construction projects that were used to train and test our model. The results demonstrate that our approach can accurately classify ‘near misses’, and outperform prevailing state-of-the-art automatic text classification approaches. Understanding the nature of near-misses can provide site managers with the ability to identify work-areas and instances where the likelihood of an accident may occur.

PERBANDINGAN KINERJA VARIASI NAÏVE BAYES MULTIVARIATE BERNOULLI DAN NAÏVE BAYES MULTINOMIAL DALAM PENGKLASIFIKASIAN DOKUMEN TEKS

Classification of text documents with large amounts will be a job that requires a lot of time, effort and cost of having to read text documents and then categorize them manually, therefore the automatic classification of text documents is needed. The algorithm developed is K-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN), Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Neural Network (NN) and Maximum Entropy. The algorithm used as the object of research is a variation of the Naïve Bayes algorithm, the Naïve Bayes Multivariate Bernoulli and the Naïve Bayes Multinomial. This study discusses whether there are differences between the Algorithms. The Naïve Bayes Multivariate Bernoulli algorithm and the Naïve Bayes Multinomial can be seen from the value of the agreement and the speed of the process of classifying text documents, as well as more information about the process of processing requests that are getting more and more requested. While the highest value using the non-stemming Naïve Bayes Bernoulli method is 71.33%, and the fastest processing time is required using the non-stemming Naïve Bayes method which requires 0.12 seconds processing time.

РОЗРОБКА ІНТЕРФЕЙСНОГО МОДУЛЯ ДЛЯ ПРОГРАМНО-АПАРАТНОГО КОМПЛЕКСУ АВТОМАТИЧНОЇ КЛАСИФІКАЦІЇ ТЕКСТІВ

The amount of information presented in text form is constantly increasing. A feature of a large amount of such information in most cases is the lack of its structuredness, which complicates the analysis process. At the stage of document processing in the information and analytical system, an automatic classifier is used – as a program, or as a software and hardware complex that accelerates automatic text processing. In this paper, a software and hardware complex is considered, in which the software part functions on the user's computer, and the hardware part is implemented on the FPGA. Thus, the problem of organizing the connection between its two parts is urgent. While FPGAs have high internal parallelism and very high internal bandwidth, the low bandwidth of the interface between the accelerator and the rest of the system, as well as restrictions on the conditions of its use, is a bottleneck in the field of data transfer. This problem is aggravated in the conditions of the need to create a network system for constructing a classifier, where several user computers connected to the network need access to the hardware-implemented part of the complex (accelerator). The aim of this work is to develop an internal interface module with network communication, in accordance with the technical and functional requirements of the software and hardware complex for automatic text classification. Considering the need to provide network access to the accelerator, as a result of the analysis, the Fast Ethernet interface was chosen as the base one. This interface is the most common LAN standard used by most businesses. For the development of the printed circuit board of the interface module, a comprehensive computer-aided design system Altium Designer was used. After the development of the electrical schematic diagram of the project, a simulation of the controller part was created in the Proteus digital-to-analog simulation program. For the convenience of testing the developed interface module, the Arduino UNO module and the SPI serial interface were used. A feature of the developed module is the support of network-level protocols, it makes it possible to organize access from any personal computer of the local network to an expansion board built on the basis of FPGA. The developed printed circuit board of the interface module was analyzed for possible defects and a list of recommendations for the operating conditions of the device was developed. The interface board is designed taking into account the balanced ratio of price-performance criteria, and is intended for use in any institution where there is a need for automatic classification of text documents.

State-of-the-art methods in healthcare text classification system: AI paradigm.

Machine learning has shown its importance in delivering healthcare solutions and revolutionizing the future of filtering huge amountd of textual content. The machine intelligence can adapt semantic relations among text to infer finer contextual information and language processing system can use this information for better decision support and quality of life care. Further, a learnt model can efficiently utilize written healthcare information in knowledgeable patterns. The word-document and document-document linkage can help in gaining better contextual information. We analyzed 124 research articles in text and healthcare domain related to the ML paradigm and showed the mechanism of intelligence to capture hidden insights from document representation where only a term or word is used to explain the phenomenon. Mostly in the research, document-word relations are identified while relations with other documents are ignored. This paper emphasizes text representations and its linage with ML, DL, and RL approaches, which is an important marker for intelligence segregation. Furthermore, we highlighted the advantages of ML and DL methods as powerful tools for automatic text classification tasks.
