Uploading Local System Cataloging into OCLC

Discusses the introduction of an efficient way to get local cataloguing onto OCLC to maintain resource sharing, in a library where original cataloguing is performed directly onto a local system. Describes the techniques employed using ProComm to automate OCLC dial access, the routine to transfer dBASE to ProComm, and the script of a sample automatic data entry session.

Computer matching of oligonucleotide patterns on electrophoretic gels: an application to the epidemiology of cytomegalovirus.

A computer program was written to analyse oligonucleotide patterns displayed by gel electrophoresis following restriction endonuclease digestion of human cytomegaloviral DNA, and was applied to an epidemiological study of the transmission of infection in a hospital special care baby unit, with regard to infant-to-infant and mother-to-infant transmission. The program calculates the molecular weight of oligonucleotides from their mobilities, using a cubic spline curve based on the mobilities of oligonucleotides from the AD169 strain. A matching algorithm then calculates the number of unmatched fragments for each pair of viral isolates. This was used as a similarity measure which successfully distinguished mother and infant isolate pairs from epidemiologically unrelated pairs. The program is not intended to provide fully automatic matching, but could be recommended as a screening device to pick out pairs of strains which are sufficiently similar to suggest a common source of infection, and which may warrant closer comparison. Other applications are discussed, and the possible use of densitometers to automate data entry is considered.

A personal reference retrieval system for medium sized computers allowing automatic data entry from ONLINE databases.

A series of programs has been developed for the storage and retrieval of bibliographic references, which allow automatic cross-referencing of the stored entries. Reference retrieval becomes successively faster as more searches are performed and references are automatically sub-grouped under indexed terms allow complete sub-sets to be scanned independently. The indexing allows complete sub-collections of references to be printed, e.g. for a review, with no further searching requirements. This style of retrieval is conceptually similar to card systems in use by many scientists and should enable a rapid familiarization with the retrieval system. The editing features of the programs provide for the direct collection of references from large ONLINE databases (e.g. MEDLINE) and the automatic entering of the references into the personal data collection. The programs provide reliable storage of references for individual scientists, so that their collections from library databases, or from manual input may be updated and searched quickly.

Archiving and retrieval of data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) mission

AbstractThe data base of IUE spectra available for dissemination to the scientific community presently contains approximately 22,000 separate images. Due to storage space and computer processing time limitations, it was decided to store the data on high density (6250 bpi) specially formatted tapes and to retrieve and reconvert them to the originally supplied format upon request. The archival/retrieval system for the data and an automatic data entry system for creation and maintenance of an indexing data base are described. Suggestions are made for the use of standard formats for future image data storage, retrieval and dissemination.

Automated data entry and retrieval for health-care management.

The development and implementation of a unique system for medical information management are described. An automated, optically scanned data entry system (OpScan) was combined with a generalized, interactive, storage and retrieval system, the Medical Information Management System (MIMS). OpScan-MIMS operates via a time-share system and requires minimal acquisition and maintenance of hardware. The primary advantages of OpScan-MIMS are its efficient and rapid method for data entry, lack of requirement for technical skills, user-generated programs, and cost-effectiveness. OpScan-MIMS has been utilized in a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases for immediate audit of medical records, monitoring of quality-assurance systems, retrieval of data for statistical analysis and clinic management, and as a teaching instrument for medical and paramedical trainees. Further applications to other systems of health-care management are being developed.
