Uptake and outcome of manuscripts in Nature journals by review model and author characteristics

BackgroundDouble-blind peer review has been proposed as a possible solution to avoid implicit referee bias in academic publishing. The aims of this study are to analyse the demographics of corresponding authors choosing double-blind peer review and to identify differences in the editorial outcome of manuscripts depending on their review model.MethodsData includes 128,454 manuscripts received between March 2015 and February 2017 by 25 Nature-branded journals. We investigated the uptake of double-blind review in relation to journal tier, as well as gender, country, and institutional prestige of the corresponding author. We then studied the manuscripts’ editorial outcome in relation to review model and author’s characteristics. The gender (male, female, or NA) of the corresponding authors was determined from their first name using a third-party service (Gender API). The prestige of the corresponding author’s institutions was measured from the data of the Global Research Identifier Database (GRID) by dividing institutions in three prestige groups with reference to the 2016 Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. We employed descriptive statistics for data exploration, and we tested our hypotheses using Pearson’s chi-square and binomial tests. We also performed logistic regression modelling with author update, out-to-review, and acceptance as response, and journal tier, author gender, author country, and institution as predictors.ResultsAuthor uptake for double-blind submissions was 12% (12,631 out of 106,373). We found a small but significant association between journal tier and review type (p value < 0.001, Cramer’s V = 0.054, df = 2). We had gender information for 50,533 corresponding authors and found no statistically significant difference in the distribution of peer review model between males and females (p value = 0.6179). We had 58,920 records with normalised institutions and a THE rank, and we found that corresponding authors from the less prestigious institutions are more likely to choose double-blind review (p value < 0.001, df = 2, Cramer’s V = 0.106). In the ten countries with the highest number of submissions, we found a large significant association between country and review type (p value < 0.001, df = 10, Cramer’s V = 0.189). The outcome both at first decision and post review is significantly more negative (i.e. a higher likelihood for rejection) for double-blind than single-blind papers (p value < 0.001, df = 1, Cramer’s V = 0.112 for first decision; p value < 0.001; df = 1, Cramer’s V = 0.082 for post-review decision).ConclusionsThe proportion of authors that choose double-blind review is higher when they submit to more prestigious journals, they are affiliated with less prestigious institutions, or they are from specific countries; the double-blind option is also linked to less successful editorial outcomes.

A utilização de that-clauses em abstracts escritos por alunos-pesquisadores brasileiros

A escrita de abstracts tem sido estudada por pesquisadores de diferentes áreas (BATHIA, 1993; SWALES; FEAK, 2009) para que seja possível observar quais padrões são mais utilizados por autores de revistas de impacto internacional a fim de preparar pesquisadores para a escrita deste gênero textual. Neste artigo, demonstraremos, por meio de análises de corpus, como as that-clauses são utilizadas em produções acadêmicas de abstracts de aprendizes, especificamente quando almejam demonstrar suas descobertas, resultados e conclusão de pesquisa (movimentos retóricos 4 e 5 de Swales e Feak (2009)). Além disso, contamos com uma base teórica que permeia a Linguística de Corpus (LC), voltada para a aplicação no ensino e aprendizagem de Inglês para Fins Acadêmicos (IFA). Após coleta e compilação do corpus, utilizamos o programa computacional Sketch Engine (KILGARRIFF et al, 2014) para criar linhas de concordância com a palavra that e, a partir dos resultados, observamos que na escrita dos aprendizes, as estruturas mais utilizadas para reportar as descobertas, resultados e conclusões de pesquisa, foram: sujeito + verbo no passado simples + that e sujeito + verbo no presente simples + that, se alinhando com resultados de pesquisa de Biber et al. (2007) e Glasman-Deal (2010). O resultado final demonstrou que é possível utilizar a LC para o ensino e aprendizagem de IFA e também para o desenvolvimento de atividades didáticas e obter um desfecho positivo, pois a LC é uma área abrangente que permite diversos tipos de aplicações, visando análises de dados linguísticos para os mais diversos fins.

Quantitative Description of Osteopathic Physician Authorship in Prominent Neurosurgery Journals Since 1944: Coming of Age?

BackgroundThe Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association recently agreed to establish a single graduate medical education system for the United States allopathic and osteopathic resident physicians by 2020. Consequential to this merger, new standards will be implemented for academic and research requirements within medical schools as well as residency programs. In the United States, osteopathic medicine is considered to be a parallel profession to allopathic medicine. However, recent studies have revealed that the percentages of United States osteopathic physicians currently in practice are not proportional to the percentages of editorial board member positions they hold in several high-profile medical journals as well as neurosurgical journals. To our knowledge, there is currently no published literature examining osteopathic physician author representation of any neurosurgical journal. In the present study, we analyze the number of osteopathic physicians and osteopathic neurosurgeons serving as authors in prominent neurosurgical journals.MethodsAmerican neurosurgical journals with the highest number of citations plus an affiliation with a neurosurgical society open to osteopathic neurosurgeons were used as criteria for journal selection. The Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group journals (Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, and Neurosurgical Focus) fulfilled these criteria. The number of allopathic and osteopathic physicians who have published at least one manuscript in a Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group journal was counted. The specialty of each osteopathic author was examined.ResultsOur analysis found that allopathic physicians represented 105,157 (99.68%) and osteopathic physicians represented 335 (0.32%) of the 105,492 authorship positions held by these physicians in these journals since 1944. Statistical significance was found comparing the number of allopathic authors versus the number of osteopathic authors (p < 0.0001). The most common specialty represented by osteopathic authors in all journals was neurosurgery (45%). Osteopathic neurosurgeons represented 153 (0.15%) of the total number of allopathic and osteopathic authors.ConclusionsThese data establish that the percentages of the United States osteopathic physicians and osteopathic neurosurgeons currently in practice are not proportional to the percentages of authorship positions they hold in Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group journals. We postulate that this apparent disproportionality may originate from significant differences between allopathic and osteopathic medical school research funding, research opportunities, scholarly activities, and dual-degree programs.

Surface patterning of a novel PEG-functionalized poly-l-lactide polymer to improve its biocompatibility: Applications to bioresorbable vascular stents.

Today, research in the field of bioresorbable vascular stents (BVS) not only focusses on a new material being nontoxic but also tries to enhance its biocompatibility in terms of endothelialization potential and hemocompatibility. To this end, we used picosecond laser ablation technology as a single‐step and contactless method for surface microstructuring of a bioresorbable polymer which can be utilized in stent manufacture. The method works on all materials via fast material removal, can be easily adapted for micropatterning of tubular or more complex sample shapes and scaled up by means of micropatterning of metal molds for manufacturing. Here, picosecond laser ablation was applied to a bioresorbable, biologically inactive and polyethylene glycol‐modified poly‐l‐lactide polymer (PEGylated PLLA) to generate parallel microgrooves with varying geometries. The different patterns were thoroughly evaluated by a series of cyto‐ and hemocompatibility tests revealing that all surfaces were non‐toxic and non‐hemolytic. More importantly, patterns with 20 to 25 µm wide and 6 to 7 µm deep grooves significantly enhanced endothelial cell adhesion in comparison to samples with smaller grooves. Here, human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells were found to align along the groove direction, which is thought to encourage endothelialization of intraluminal surfaces of BVS. © 2018 The Authors Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Librarians as Research Partners: Their Contribution to the Scholarly Endeavour Beyond Library and Information Science

Academic libraries are increasingly called upon to demonstrate their value to their home institutions. Research collaboration with faculty resulting in the co-authorship of scholarly output is one possible way to demonstrate the alignment of the library with the institutional mission. Involvement in research also improves librarians' skills in offering research support services. This study explores the contribution of librarians to scholarly journals in fields other than Library and Information Science (LIS) as well as their collaboration practices with researchers in those fields. Results show an increasing number of papers published by library-affiliated authors in non-LIS journals between 2006 and 2015. The papers fall broadly into four areas: articles on topics related to LIS published in non-LIS journals; higher education and information literacy; systematic reviews and meta-analysis; and research collaboration in the faculty's areas of expertise. The study is limited by the difficulty in properly retrieving the scholarly output of librarians from bibliographic databases and the difficulty in ascertaining their contributions to published articles.

Bibliometric analysis of manuscript characteristics that influence citations: A comparison of six major psychiatry journals

In this study we investigated the characteristics of psychiatry manuscript that influence its citation rate. We conducted a cross-sectional study of published articles (n = 545), from January to June 2007, from 6 major psychiatry journals with the highest 5-year impact-factor. Citation count for these articles was retrieved from Web Of Science (by Clarivate Analytics) and 22 article characteristics were tabulated manually. We then predicted the citation rate by performing univariate analysis, spearman rank-order correlation, and multiple regression model on the collected variables. Using spearman rank-order correlation, we found the following variables to have significant positive correlation with citations: abstract character count (rs and p-value, 0.22 and 0.001 respectively), number of references (0.2, 0.01), abstract word count (0.17, 0.0005), number of pages (0.15, 0.003), open access (0.06, 0.05), study design reported in title (0.04, 0.0001), total number of words (0.03, 0.01) and structured abstract (0.03, 0.0009). In a multivariate linear regression model, the following variables predicted increased citation rates (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.38): reporting of study design in title, structured abstract and open access. Editors and authors of psychiatry journals can improve the impact of their journals and articles by utilizing this bibliometric study when assembling their manuscript.

Assessing South African ICT4D research outputs: a journal review

South Africa is an ideal test bed for ICT4D research, since on the one hand it has stark development challenges, and on the other hand it has well established ICT infrastructure that could be utilised towards socio-economic development. Not surprisingly, a plethora of ICT4D projects are executed in South Africa by a variety of role-players. This paper focuses on how effective South African researchers are in converting ICT4D research activity into significant research outputs. Since effective research is assessed by journal publications, a review was done of papers published by South African authors in the prominent international ICT4D journals. It is found that while South Africa has a prominent presence in ICT4D journals, this prominence is concentrated in one research institution and one ICT4D journal. A surprising finding is that cooperation among research institutions that leads to co-authored publications is very low, even among neighbouring institutions. Future research is suggested to investigate the good practices of the most prolific research institution, to investigate reasons for the low cooperation between institutions and to more thoroughly investigate the research contributions made by the South African authors.

Analyzing the social impact of orthodontic articles published by Chinese authors in international journals during the past five years

Objective: To evaluate and analyze the social impact of orthodontic articles published by Chinese authors in international journals during the past five years, using an altmetric tool; and to explore the practical value of altmetrics measures in the evaluation of dental research. Methods: PubMed was searched via the Altmetric Explorer platform to identify orthodontic research articles that were published during 2012-2016, with at least one affiliation from China. Commentaries, news reports and editorials were excluded. By reading titles and abstracts, two authors carried out inclusion and exclusion of literature independently to exclude articles that are not related to orthodontics and retracted articles. Data extraction was performed simultaneously. Any disagreement was resolved by discussion. Linear regressions were used to analyze the association between Altmetric attention score (AAS) and potentially related factors. Results: Among 864 articles identified from PubMed, a total of 206 received an AAS, and 160 articles were included for analyzing. The mean AAS of orthodontic research articles from China was 2.7 (95% confidence interval: 2.0 to 3.4). American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics had the most scored articles (n=24) and the highest total AAS (67.0), while European Journal of Orthodontics had the highest mean AAS (3.8). All the top-3 articles were published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Significant positive associations were found among high impact factors (P<0.05), high level of evidence (P<0.001) and the AAS. Conclusions: Publishing more high-impact articles and high level of evidence articles improved the international social impact of orthodontic research from China. As a valuable supplement to citation counts, Altmetric measures had practical values in dental research area.

Retracted or Withdrawn Publications in Journals Relating to Plastic Surgery.

The aim of this study was to determine how many papers have been retracted or withdrawn, and for what reason, in journals relating to plastic surgery.PubMed and SCOPUS were used, with the search terms (retracted OR withdrawn) AND (article OR publication OR paper) AND {(plastic surgery) OR (cosmetic surgery) OR (maxillofacial surgery) OR (craniofacial surgery)}. The papers were analyzed and classified according to the reason for retraction or withdrawal, journal name, publication year, and author. In the PubMed and SCOPUS, 227 and 114 titles were found, respectively, from which 34 duplicate titles were removed. An additional 261 titles which did not include "retracted" or "withdrawn" were removed, leaving 46 papers and 6 mined papers were added. The 52 full texts (42 "retracted" and 10 "withdrawn") were analyzed.The most frequent reason for retraction or withdrawal was duplication (17, 32.7%) followed by the author's request (9, 17.3%), plagiarism (7, 13.5%), and lack of permission (5, 9.6%). Retraction was most common in Plast Reconstr Surg (6, 12%) followed by Aesthetic Plast Surg (4, 7.9%), Ann Plast Surg (2, 3.9%), J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg (2, 3.9%), and Surg Res (2, 3.9%). Most authors retracted a paper just once; however, 6 authors retracted a paper twice or more. The first retraction was found in 1991, and the number of retractions showed a tendency to increase over time. However, the duplication rate did not change over time (R = 0.178, P = 0.117).Journal reviewers, as well as production editors, should check for duplication, plagiarism, or permission-related problems.

Pedagogical and Research Approaches in Inclusive Education in ELT in Colombia: Perspectives From Some Profile Journal Authors

This article reports on a descriptive study carried out in articles published in the Profile: Issues in Teachers’ Professional Development journal that deal with inclusive education in English language teaching in Colombia. The study embraced documentary research and critical discourse analysis which helped us identify trends in pedagogical approaches in foreign language instruction and research approaches employed by the journal’s authors. It also allowed us to examine how such approaches show the presence or absence of inclusive education both in public policies and pedagogical interventions by institutions and individuals. We hope that the outcomes derived from this study nurture further discussion, encourage research, and motivate pedagogical practices that foster inclusive education in foreign language teaching and teacher education.

Folliculin Regulates Osteoclastogenesis Through Metabolic Regulation.

ABSTRACTOsteoclast differentiation is a dynamic differentiation process, which is accompanied by dramatic changes in metabolic status as well as in gene expression. Recent findings have revealed an essential connection between metabolic reprogramming and dynamic gene expression changes during osteoclast differentiation. However, the upstream regulatory mechanisms that drive these metabolic changes in osteoclastogenesis remain to be elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that induced deletion of a tumor suppressor gene, Folliculin (Flcn), in mouse osteoclast precursors causes severe osteoporosis in 3 weeks through excess osteoclastogenesis. Flcn‐deficient osteoclast precursors reveal cell autonomous accelerated osteoclastogenesis with increased sensitivity to receptor activator of NF‐κB ligand (RANKL). We demonstrate that Flcn regulates oxidative phosphorylation and purine metabolism through suppression of nuclear localization of the transcription factor Tfe3, thereby inhibiting expression of its target gene Pgc1. Metabolome studies revealed that Flcn‐deficient osteoclast precursors exhibit significant augmentation of oxidative phosphorylation and nucleotide production, resulting in an enhanced purinergic signaling loop that is composed of controlled ATP release and autocrine/paracrine purinergic receptor stimulation. Inhibition of this purinergic signaling loop efficiently blocks accelerated osteoclastogenesis in Flcn‐deficient osteoclast precursors. Here, we demonstrate an essential and novel role of the Flcn‐Tfe3‐Pgc1 axis in osteoclastogenesis through the metabolic reprogramming of oxidative phosphorylation and purine metabolism. © 2018 The Authors Journal of Bone and Mineral Research published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

Factors influencing the data sharing behavior of researchers in sociology and political science

PurposeOpen data and data sharing should improve transparency of research. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different institutional and individual factors affect the data sharing behavior of authors of research articles in sociology and political science.Design/methodology/approachDesktop research analyzed attributes of sociology and political science journals (n=262) from their websites. A second data set of articles (n=1,011; published 2012-2014) was derived from ten of the main journals (five from each discipline) and stated data sharing was examined. A survey of the authors used the Theory of Planned Behavior to examine motivations, behavioral control, and perceived norms for sharing data. Statistical tests (Spearman’s ρ, χ2) examined correlations and associations.FindingsAlthough many journals have a data policy for their authors (78 percent in sociology, 44 percent in political science), only around half of the empirical articles stated that the data were available, and for only 37 percent of the articles could the data be accessed. Journals with higher impact factors, those with a stated data policy, and younger journals were more likely to offer data availability. Of the authors surveyed, 446 responded (44 percent). Statistical analysis indicated that authors’ attitudes, reported past behavior, social norms, and perceived behavioral control affected their intentions to share data.Research limitations/implicationsLess than 50 percent of the authors contacted provided responses to the survey. Results indicate that data sharing would improve if journals had explicit data sharing policies but authors also need support from other institutions (their universities, funding councils, and professional associations) to improve data management skills and infrastructures.Originality/valueThis paper builds on previous similar research in sociology and political science and explains some of the barriers to data sharing in social sciences by combining journal policies, published articles, and authors’ responses to a survey.

Case Reports and Consent for Publishing in Rheumatology Journals: A Latin American Perspective.

Case reports have a long-standing tradition in the current rheumatology literature. We aimed to present the main points of view regarding the importance, meaning, and barriers of consent for publishing under the comprehensive protection of patients' rights within this genre. We encourage Latin American editors and authors of rheumatology journals to adopt the best ethical practices in the field, avoiding security and legal liabilities from a regional perspective.

Representation of Women on Radiology Journal Editorial Boards: A 40-Year Analysis

We examined female representation on editorial boards of four prominent radiology journals. We compared editorial board representation to female academic radiology career advancement and the proportion of female authorship in three journals over four decades. We collected data on the gender of editorial board members as listed on mastheads of Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), Academic Radiology, and the Journal of the American College of Radiology in 5-year intervals plus the most recent year available (1973-2017), and the gender of their editors-in-chief for all years since each journal's inception. We compared Radiology, AJR, and Academic Radiology data to published data on gender of the journals' authors, all US medical students, and academic radiologists over time. Gender was determined for 171 editors-in-chief (100%) and 2139 (100%) editorial board members listed in the selected journals for each of the study years. The proportion of women on editorial boards increased from 1.4% (1 of 69) in 1978 to 18.8% (73 of 388) in 2013 (P < .001), but remained below the proportion of female first authors (7.5% in 1978 and 27.1% in 2013) and female faculty in radiology (11.5% in 1978 and 28.1% in 2013). None of the four general radiology journals had a female editor-in-chief during the study period. Female representation on editorial boards has increased over time, but still lags behind increases seen in female first authorship in radiology journals and radiology faculty appointments over the last four decades. There was no female editor-in-chief during the study period.

Neurotrophin-3 released from implant of tissue-engineered fibroin scaffolds inhibits inflammation, enhances nerve fiber regeneration, and improves motor function in canine spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) normally results in cell death, scarring, cavitation, inhibitory molecules release, etc., which are regarded as a huge obstacle to reconnect the injured neuronal circuits because of the lack of effective stimulus. In this study, a functional gelatin sponge scaffold was used to inhibit local inflammation, enhance nerve fiber regeneration, and improve neural conduction in the canine. This scaffold had good porosity and modified with neurotrophin‐3 (NT‐3)/fibroin complex, which showed sustained release in vitro. After the scaffold was transplanted into canine spinal cord hemisection model, hindlimb movement, and neural conduction were improved evidently. Migrating host cells, newly formed neurons with associated synaptic structures together with functional blood vessels with intact endothelium in the regenerating tissue were identified. Taken together, the results demonstrated that using bioactive scaffold could establish effective microenvironment stimuli for endogenous regeneration, providing a potential and practical strategy for treatment of spinal cord injury. © 2018 The Authors Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Article processing charges for open access publication — the situation for research intensive universities in the USA and Canada

Background . Open access (OA) publishing via article processing charges (APCs) is growing as an alternative to subscription publishing. The Pay It Forward (PIF) Project is exploring the feasibility of transitioning from paying subscriptions to funding APCs for faculty at research intensive universities. Estimating of the cost of APCs for the journals authors at research intensive universities tend to publish is essential for the PIF project and similar initiatives. This paper presents our research into this question. Methods . We identified APC prices for publications by authors at the 4 research intensive United States (US) and Canadian universities involved in the study. We also obtained APC payment records from several Western European universities and funding agencies. Both data sets were merged with Web of Science (WoS) metadata. We calculated the average APCs for articles and proceedings in 13 discipline categories published by researchers at research intensive universities. Wealso identified 41 journals published by traditionally subscription publishers which have recently converted to APC funded OA and recorded the APCs they charge. Results . We identified 7629 payment records from the 4 European APC payment databases and 14 356 OA articles authored by PIF partner university faculty for which we had listed APC prices. APCs for full OA journals published by PIF authors averaged 1775 USD; full OA journal APCs paid by Western European funders averaged 1865 USD; hybrid APCs paid by Western European funders averaged 2887 USD. The APC for converted journals published by major subscription publishers averaged 1825 USD. APC funded OA is concentrated in the life and basic sciences. APCs funded articles in the social sciences and humanities are often multidisciplinary and published in journals such as PLOS ONE that largely publish in the life sciences. Conclusions . Full OA journal APCs average a little under 2000 USD while hybrid articles average about 3000 USD for publications by researchers at research intensive universities. There is a lack of information on discipline differences in APCs due to the concentration of APC funded publications in a few fields and the multidisciplinary nature of research.

Silane modification has been proposed as a powerful biomaterial surface modification tool. This is the first comprehensive investigation into the effect of silane chain length on the resultant properties of -NH2 silane monolayers and the associated osteoinductive properties of the surface. A range of -NH2 presenting silanes, chain length 3-11, were introduced to glass coverslips and characterized using water contact angles, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Ninhydrin assays. The ability of the variation in chain length to form a homogenous layer across the entirety of the surfaces was also assessed. The osteoinductive potential of the resultant surfaces was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunocytochemistry, and von Kossa staining. Control of surface chemistry and topography was directly associated with changes in chain length. This resulted in the identification of a specific, chain length 11 (CL11) which significantly increased the osteoinductive properties of the modified materials. Only CL11 surfaces had a highly regular nano-topography/roughness which resulted in the formation of an appetite-like layer on the surface that induced a significantly enhanced osteoinductive response (increased expression of osteocalcin, CBFA1, sclerostin, and the production of a calcified matrix) across the entirety of the surface. © 2018 The Authors Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
