A report of sea cucumbers collected on the first dedicated deep-sea biological survey of Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories around Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea)

The marine benthic biodiversity survey Investigating the IOT took place in the waters of Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) on two voyages over 2021 and 2022. Both voyages on the RV Investigator collected sea cucumbers using a beam trawl from the seamounts and seafloor of the area. A report of sea cucumbers collected is included below, including taxonomic treatments, shipboard and ossicle images, range extensions, and genetic data for species where available. One new species, Deima oloughlini Mackenzie and Davey sp. nov., is described. Sea cucumbers collected are now housed in the collections at the Museums Victoria Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia. Range extensions and new species records for Australia will be supplied to compliers, including the Australian Faunal Directory and Atlas of Living Australia, and genetic data will be lodged with GenBank. This report was initiated through funding by an Australian Biological Resources Study Bush Blitz grant, and subsequently supported through funding by Ocean Census. Investigating the IOT voyages were supported by Parks Australia, Bush Blitz, Museums Victoria, and other Australian institutions. Voyage time on the RV Investigator was supported by the Marine National Facility (CSIRO), and additional travel for holothuroid taxonomic work was supported by a Council of the Heads of Australian Faunal Collections grant.

The botany of the Stony Head Training Area: new records for a biodiverse remnant in northern Tasmania, Australia

A flora survey of the Stony Head Training Area, northern Tasmania, was conducted in 2020–2021 as a collaboration between the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s Expeditions of Discovery and the Australian Biological Resources Study Bush Blitz programs. With a long historical use as an artillery range, the 5000-ha area contains a range of geologies, has a low profile with average elevations under 100 m asl, and its vegetation consists largely of heathy woodlands and coastal heathlands. It contains a range of relatively undisturbed, high-quality native habitats and populations of several threatened species. The survey targeted vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens, and recorded a total of 575 taxa. Nine lichens are new records for Tasmania — <i>Buellia hypostictella</i>, <i>Caloplaca gilfillaniorum</i>, <i>Cladonia subradiata</i>, <i>Graphis geraensis</i>, <i>Lecanora intumescens</i> and <i>Opegrapha diaphoriza</i> — all previously also known from mainland Australia, and <i>Micarea rhabdogena</i>, <i>M. xanthonica</i> and <i>Pseudothelomma ocellatum</i>, which represent first records for the Southern Hemisphere. Biogeographical and ecological patterns in the flora, the contribution of vegetation remnants to flora conservation, and the ongoing importance of surveys and alpha-taxonomy for documenting biodiversity are discussed. Our findings are consistent with a body of research showing a trend of healthy populations of threatened taxa within military training areas.

Euryhaliotrema spp. (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) Parasitic on the Gill Lamellae of Perciform Fishes in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, with the Description of Euryhaliotrema solenophallus sp. nov. from the Silver Moony Monodactylus argenteus (Linnaeus) (Monodactylidae).

The present paper represented the third installment on the monogenoidean parasites collected during a workshop exploring the diversity of the parasites of fishes in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Previous reports on monogenoids collected during the workshop included species parasitizing beloniform and gerreid fishes. During January 2016, the author, having responsibility for the identification and description of monogenoids, participated in a workshop supported by an Australian Biological Resources Study Grant to Drs. Thomas Cribb and Scott Cutmore, University of Queensland, to explore the diversity of parasites infecting the fishes of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Approximately 100 species of marine fishes were necropsied for parasites. Standard procedures for collecting, mounting, drawing, and measuring of monogenoids were employed. A new species of Euryhaliotrema was collected and described from the silver moony Monodactylus argenteus (Monodactylidae) and the first recording of Euryhaliotrema spirotubiforum on the dory snapper Lutjanus fulviflamma and Russell's snapper Lutjanus russellii (both Lutjanidae) in Moreton Bay was reported. The results suggested that the diversity of dactylogyrids off eastern Australia is under estimated in the literature.

The Field Guide to the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape app: A Partnership Between the Gunditjmara Community and Museums Victoria

In March 2011 Museums Victoria participated in the Australian Biological Resources Study’s Bush Blitz in Kurtonitj, Lake Condah and Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Areas in western Victoria. These areas form part of the Budj Bim Cultural Heritage Landscape recently nominated for World Heritage Status. The Bush Blitz found 854 species that were not previously recorded from the reserves, including over a dozen new to science. Thousands of specimens of plants and animals were collected during the survey, including over 1000 by Museums Victoria. The Bush Blitz ran in close cooperation with Gunditjmara Traditional Owners and Working on Country rangers. The relationship established between Museums Victoria and the Gunditjmara during the initial Bush Blitz resulted in several return trips by Museum scientists. From these grew a project to combine the Gunditjmara’s traditional knowledge of the animals of their Country with the scientific knowledge generated through the Bush Blitz and other surveys. The result is a free app for iOS and Android, the Field Guide to the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, presenting over 250 species found in and around the area. For over two-thirds of these species traditional knowledge is included, such as names in the Dhauwurd Wurrung language, information on how they were hunted and used as well as beliefs and stories. Images and descriptions of cultural objects related to daily life in this landscape are also presented. The app contains over 700 images of wildlife and country as well as calls from frogs, birds and mammals. The content of the app was developed by staff at Museums Victoria in collaboration with the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. We believe this is the first time this sort of synthesis of cultural knowledge specific to the biodiversity of an area has been presented alongside the scientific knowledge. The app is being used on Country by Gunditjmara for education within the community, by heritage researchers working in the area and by other visitors to Stone Country. We hoped the app would be a model that other communities could adopt using the freely available code and we have had enquires about managing data for similar projects. All the information in the app is stored within the museum’s collection management database (EMu) allowing its association with taxonomy as well as specimens from the area, enriching our knowledge and understanding of our collections.

Anaspidesidae, a new family for syncarid crustaceans formerly placed in Anaspididae Thomson, 1893

A new subspecies of Candalides geminus Edwards and Kerr, 1978 (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) from the Northern Territory, Australia

This work was supported through funding from the Australian Government’s Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) Bush Blitz Strategic Taxonomy Grants Scheme for a project entitled ‘Taxonomic revision of Candalides and allied genera in the tribe Candalidini (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)’. The ABRS Bush Blitz program is also gratefully acknowledged for provision of funds for feld expeditions to Wongalara Wildlife Sanctuary in 2012.

A new genus and twenty new species of Australian jumping plant-lice (Psylloidea: Triozidae) from Eremophila and Myoporum (Scrophulariaceae: Myoporeae).

The Triozidae is a diverse, cosmopolitan family of jumping plant-lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) from an exceptionally diverse range of plant families, but with few described Australian species. As a direct outcome of the Australian Biological Resources Study Bush Blitz species discovery program, many new Psylloidea from novel host plants in remote localities have been revealed. In this study a new genus Myotrioza Taylor gen. nov. and 20 new species are described from southern and central Australia which also establishes the first host plant records from Eremophila and Myoporum (Scrophulariaceae: Myoporeae). New species, delineated using a combination of morphological and mitochondrial COI sequence data, are: Myotrioza clementsiana sp. nov., M. darwinensis sp. nov., M. desertorum sp. nov., M. eremi sp. nov., M. eremophili sp. nov., M. flindersiana sp.nov., M. gawlerensis sp. nov., M. insularis sp. nov., M. interioris sp. nov., M. interstantis sp. nov., M. longifoliae sp. nov., M. markmitchelli sp. nov., M. myopori sp. nov., M. oppositifoliae sp. nov., M. pantonii sp. nov., M. platycarpi sp. nov., M. remota sp. nov., M. scopariae sp. nov., M. serrulatae sp. nov., and M. telowiensis sp. nov. Genetic divergence data, host associations, biogeographic data, diagnoses and a key to species are presented. Myotrioza appears to be particularly diverse in ephemeral southern Australia, especially in inland Western Australia and South Australia, matching regions of high diversity of the host genera; some species are likely to be short range endemics.

Bush Blitz: journeys of discovery in the Australian outback

Bush Blitz is an innovative and ambitious partnership between the Australian Biological Resources Study, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities and the Earthwatch Institute (Australia) that aims to fill critical gaps in the knowledge of the biodiversity of Australia (http://www.bushblitz.org.au). Since its inception in 2009, over 900 putative new species of animals and plants have been discovered in Australian conservation reserves. As a unique approach to surveys in often-remote areas of the Australian outback, the Bush Blitz program has been highly successful and highlights the need for ongoing exploration and research to adequately document the biodiversity of Australia. This special issue of Australian Systematic Botany describes some of the newly discovered species and showcases the botanical results of the Bush Blitz program.

Publications in the period 2002 to 2004 dealing with Australian Syncarida and Peracarida have been reviewed and new taxa, new combinations and significant papers listed. Eighty species in 28 genera and seven families of Isopoda, seven new species in four genera and two families of Tanaidacea, and one new species of Spelaeogriphacea have been newly reported for Australia in the 3-year period. No publications dealing with Syncarida, Mictacea or Thermosbaenacea were found. This report does not deal with Amphipoda, Mysidacea or Cumacea. These updates have been made to the Zoological Catalogue of Australia Volume 19.2A on the Australian Biological Resources Study website.

Biodiversity: the scene in Australia and the role of the Australian Biological Resources Study

It is estimated that Australia is home to more than 1 million species, less than 15% of which have been described. No estimate is given for parasites, but brief speculation on the potential is presented. The Commonwealth Government has a clear role in funding biosystematic research in Australia in support of its Natural Heritage Trust programmes, the National Biodiversity Strategy and its responsibilities under the Biodiversity Convention, and in order to maintain adequate taxonomic capacity. As a Government programme of Environment Australia, the Australian Biological Resources Study has disbursed around A$12 million towards taxonomic and biogeographic research on animals and Protozoa. Approximately 10% of this amount has gone towards parasitology. With funding for the Study being in a somewhat parlous state, it is argued that priorities for research funding need to focus clearly on issues of national significance as expressed in Government policies, strategies and environment programmes. In addition to scientific merit, research questions and projected outputs in project applications for funding should be justified in terms of meeting the needs of end users in conservation management, primary industry, and the wider biological research community.
