Immediate efficacy of auricular acupuncture combined with active exercise in the treatment of acute lumbar sprains in 10 minutes: Protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

Acute lumbar sprain (ALS) is common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by severe low back pain and activity limitation, which significantly impacts the patient's work and life. Immediate relief of pain and restoration of mobility in a short period of time are the main needs of patients when they visit the clinic. This study aims to evaluate the immediate efficacy of this combined treatment for ALS within 10 minutes. This is a single-center, prospective, randomized clinical trial. 128 eligible patients with ALS will be randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to either the auricular acupuncture (AA) group or the sham auricular acupuncture (SAA) group. All patients will receive a single 10-minute treatment. The primary outcome will be the change in pain intensity after 10 minutes of treatment. The secondary outcomes include changes in pain intensity at other time points (2, 5 minutes), changes in lumbar range of motion (ROM) at different time points, blinded assessment, treatment effect expectancy scale evaluation, and treatment satisfaction scale evaluation. All participants will be included in the analysis according to the intention-to-treat principle. This is the first randomized controlled trial to assess the immediate efficacy of AA combined with active exercise for ALS. The findings of this study are expected to provide a simple and rapid treatment for ALS in clinical. Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2400083740. Registered 30 April 2024.

Effects of Multi-Mechanism Complementary Therapy on Pain and Anxiety During Labor Latency in Primiparous Women.

Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of single and mixed complementary therapies, with different analgesic mechanisms, in relieving pain and anxiety during the late labor period. Design and method: In this study, 145 primiparous women with 2-3 cm dilation of the cervix were randomly assigned to one of five groups: control group (psychological comfort), comprehensive group, aroma group, auricular acupuncture group, and music group. The groups were distributed equally (1:1:1:1 ratio), and pain and anxiety scores were assessed at 30, 60, and 120 minutes post-intervention in each group. Outcomes and measures: Compared to the control group, all intervention groups showed lower pain scores. The comprehensive group had the largest reduction in pain scores at 30, 60, and 120 minutes post-intervention. The auricular point, aroma, and music groups also demonstrated significant reductions in pain scores at different time points. Only the comprehensive group had a statistically significant reduction in anxiety at 30 minutes post-intervention compared to the control group. However, at 60 and 120 minutes post-intervention, all intervention groups showed lower anxiety scores compared to the control group. Conclusion: The optimal effects of each therapy varied in terms of timing and duration. Combination therapy showed a greater effect size than single complementary therapy.

Effectiveness and safety of auricular acupuncture on adjuvant analgesia in patients with total knee arthroplasty: a randomized sham-controlled trial.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of auricular acupuncture (AA) on postoperative analgesia, the degree of postoperative nausea, and the effect of inflammation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This was a single-center, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. In total, 96 patients were randomly divided into an AA group with an indwelling intradermal needle (n = 48) and a sham auricular acupuncture (SAA) group with a non-penetrating placebo needle (n = 48). Intra-spinal anesthesia was adopted in both groups during surgery, and an epidural analgesic pump was implanted after surgery for 48 h. The primary outcome was the post-surgery visual analog score (VAS) of resting and movement states (at 6, 12 h and 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days). The secondary outcomes included additional doses of analgesic injection during the treatment, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and white blood cell (WBC) count on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th day after the operation, nausea on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day after the operation, the Hospital for Special Surgery Knee Score (HSS) on the 2nd and 12th week after the operation, and adverse events. The VAS in the AA group at 6 h, 12 h, 2, 3, and 5 days after surgery were lower than those of the SAA group (p < 0.05). Among the secondary outcomes, the total dose of additional analgesic injection after surgery in the AA group was lower than that in the SAA group (p < 0.05). The serum CRP on the 1st day after operation in the AA group was lower than that in the SAA group (p < 0.05). The degree of nausea on 2nd day after surgery in the AA group was lower than that in the SAA group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in other outcomes (p > 0.05). In this study, AA was shown to be an effective and safe complementary and alternative therapy for pain relief after TKA, which was able to reduce the total postoperative dose of additional painkillers, decrease serum CRP 1 day after surgery, and improve the degree of postoperative nausea. www.chictr.org.cn, ChiCTR2100054403.

Evaluating the efficacy of auricular acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced taste alterations: A pilot randomized controlled trial

PurposeIrrespective of the development of acupuncture-based interventions, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy remains controversial owing to issues with the study design and an unclear risk of bias. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of auricular acupuncture in managing taste alterations in patients with cancer undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. MethodsWe conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial involving 73 patients randomly assigned to an auricular acupuncture or a control group. The primary outcome was the severity of chemotherapy-induced taste alterations, and the secondary outcomes included quality of life and negative emotions of the patients. ResultsA total of 49 participants completed the study. Compared to the control group, patients in the auricular acupuncture group showed significant reductions in discomfort, general taste alterations, and total scores on the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed significant improvements in quality of life, including physical function (p = 0.007), role function (p = 0.006), emotional function (p = 0.016), nausea and vomiting (p = 0.021), appetite loss (p = 0.046), and significant improvements in anxiety and depression (p < 0.01). ConclusionsOur findings suggest that auricular acupuncture may be a beneficial intervention for managing chemotherapy-induced taste alterations in patients with cancer receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. It may also contribute to improvements in quality of life and negative emotions. However, these results are preliminary, and further evaluation with larger randomized controlled trials is necessary.

Effect of auricular acupuncture on neuroplasticity of stroke patients with motor dysfunction: A fNIRS study

Cerebral Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease, a disease of brain tissue damage caused by the sudden rupture or blockage of blood vessels in the brain that prevents blood flow to the brain. Acupuncture has become a popular treatment for stroke, with auricular acupuncture providing a new idea for stroke treatment. However, the neuromodulatory mechanism of auricular acupuncture in the brain is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of auricular acupuncture in the treatment of upper limb dysfunction and the activation of specific brain regions in stroke patients. Forty patients with stroke hemiplegia who met the nerf criteria were included in the experiment and randomly assigned into two groups (20 patients in each group): the auricular acupuncture group and the control group. Fugl-Meyer score (FMA) assessment of upper limb motor function, motor evoked potential (MEP) measurement, and functional near-infrared brain function imaging (fNIRS) data acquisition in the primary motor M1 area of the brain at rest were performed before and after treatment, respectively. It was found that: 1) after auricular acupuncture treatment, the patients in the auricular acupuncture group showed significantly greater peak MEP and significantly higher oxyhemoglobin content in the M1 region of the brain compared with the control group, with a significant activation effect (MEP: P-value = 0.032, t = -2.22; HbO2; f = 4.225, p = 0.046); 2) in the clinical efficacy assessment, the FMA score in the auricular acupuncture group after treatment (p = 0.0122, t = 2.769). The results suggest that auricular acupuncture has an ameliorative effect on upper limb motor deficits after stroke and that activation of the M1 region of the brain may be a key node in auricular acupuncture for treating upper limb dysfunction in stroke patients, a finding that emphasizes the potential for clinical application of auricular acupuncture therapy for stroke patients with potential mechanisms influencing the outcome.

Evaluation of postoperative analgesic effect of auricular acupuncture therapy after surgical extraction of mandibular third molar

Removing the third molar is a common dental surgery that often results in swelling and discomfort, impacting the patient’s wellbeing. Previous studies have shown that auricular acupuncture (AA) can effectively alleviate pain after surgery. This study aimed to assess the pain-relieving benefits of AA for patients undergoing third molar surgery. A clinical trial using a split-mouth design and double-blind methodology was conducted at the Dental Clinic of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city between March 2022 and March 2023. Participants had both sides of their third molars extracted, with one side receiving AA in combination with postoperative pain relief medication, and the other side receiving sham AA along with postoperative pain relief medication. Pain levels at 2, 24, 48, and 72 hours after surgery, and the amount of pain medication used was recorded. Additionally, any side effects resulting from the AA treatment were also evaluated. The pain levels measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) decreased over time for both intervention periods after surgery, with statistically significant lower VAS scores observed in the AA time compared to the sham AA time. The amount of 500mg/tablet paracetamol used after the intervention also decreased over time for both periods. At all-time points, the amount of paracetamol used in the AA group was lower than the sham AA group. No adverse effects were reported in either group. AA was effective for relieving pain after madibular third molar surgery and reducing amount of paracetamol tablets.

The effects of auricular acupuncture at lung, shenmen, endocrine, adrenal points on adult eczema: a randomized trial

Adult eczema (AE) has been reported to have a poor quality of life (qoL). Auricular acupuncture (AA) is a method that has been studied a lot recently. Our study is to determine the effects of combining AA and modern medication in the relief of symptoms and the improvement in qoL in AE. A single-blind randomized study on 65 AE at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City Branch 3; was randomized into an auricular acupuncture (AA) group and a Sham acupuncture (SA) group. All AA group patients will receive AA at Lung, Shenmen, Endocrine, and Adrenal points. The score of scoring atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) and the score of dermatology life quality index (DLQI) were compared in two groups before and after treatments. There were 33 patients in the AA group and 32 patients in the SA group. After 2 weeks, in the SA group, the SCORAD score of 46.4 ± 1.3 decreased to 28.2 ± 1.2, compared with the AA group’s SCORAD score of 47.5 ± 1.5 decreased to 24 ± 1.3; the DLQI score of 14.7 decreased to 7.6, compared with the intervention group DLQI score of 15, reduced to 5.7. The difference in improving the SCORAD score and the DLQI score between the two groups was statistically significant. No patient had any adverse events during the study. Combining auricular acupuncture Lung, Shenmen, Endocrine, Adrenal points, and modern medication treatment may relieve effectively symptoms and improve the QoL in AE.

Auricular Acupuncture for Preoperative Anxiety in Parturient Women with Scheduled Cesarean Section: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Blind Study.

Introduction: Preoperative anxiety before cesarean section is a major issue. Nonpharmacologic anxiety control is believed to be more suitable in pregnant women. Auricular acupuncture (AA) is an inexpensive, easy-to-use, and validated intervention to reduce anxiety in different surgical settings. We evaluated the effect of AA on preoperative cesarean section anxiety. Methods: In a prospective, blind, controlled trial, pregnant women with a scheduled cesarean section under spinal anesthesia were randomized to receive AA with needle, AA without needle (sham), or usual care (no intervention). Anxiety level was assessed by using a visual analogue scale for anxiety (VAS-A; 0-minimal anxiety, 100-maximal anxiety) at three time points: inclusion (pre-induction room-T0), when entering the operating room (T1), and before incision (T2). The primary outcome was the VAS-A variation (percentage changes) between T0 and T1 in the AAe group compared with that in the sham AA group. The secondary outcomes were the VAS-A variation between T0 and T1 in the AA group compared with that in the control group, and the variation between T0 and T2 compared between the three groups, the effect of AA on parasympathetic tone, and the incidence of adverse effects. Results: In women immediately before anesthesia for cesarean section, the AA produced a 19% decrease of anxiety, compared with a 21% anxiety increase in sham AA, which is significantly different. The effect of AA was more present in women with low initial anxiety. The proportion of patients reaching clinically significant anxiety reduction (>33% from the initial level) was 2.5 times higher in the AA group (p = 0.02) compared with the sham group. No differences in anxiety variations were found compared with the no-intervention group. No effect of AA was noted on parasympathetic tone. Conclusion: Compared with sham, AA decreased maternal anxiety level when arriving in the operation room and just before the beginning of the cesarean section, with a trend toward improvement compared with usual care.

Efficacy and Safety of Auricular Acupuncture for the Treatment of Insomnia in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Simple SummarySleep problems impair up to 70% of breast cancer survivors. We studied whether ear acupuncture improves sleep quality in breast cancer survivors with sleeplessness. Fifty-two female breast cancer survivors were randomly distributed to either 10 group ear acupuncture sessions or a onetime psychoeducation group. We found that sleep quality improved over the 5 weeks of the study in the ear acupuncture group in comparison to the psychoeducation group. Stress, anxiety and fatigue improved as well. These effects were lost after 17 and 29 weeks.Among women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Sleep problems impair 40–70% of breast cancer survivors. This randomized controlled trial evaluates the effect of auricular acupuncture on sleep quality in breast cancer survivors suffering from insomnia. Fifty-two female breast cancer survivors with insomnia (mean age 55.73 ± 8.10 years) were randomized either to 10 treatments of auricular acupuncture within five weeks (n = 26), or to a single session of psychoeducation plus an insomnia advice booklet (n = 26). The primary outcome was sleep quality (measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) at week 5. Secondary outcomes were inflammation parameter (interleukin-6), stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and fatigue at week 5, and sleep quality, stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and fatigue 17 and 29 weeks after randomization. Intention-to-treat analysis showed a significantly stronger increase in sleep quality in the auricular acupuncture group compared to the psychoeducation group (p = 0.031; η2p = 0.094) at week 5. Furthermore, auricular acupuncture improved stress (p = 0.030; η2p = 0.094), anxiety (p = 0.001; η2p = 0.192), and fatigue (p = 0.006; η2p = 0.148) at week 5 compared to psychoeducation. No significant group difference was found concerning the other outcomes at week 5, or in any outcome at week 17 or week 29. No serious adverse events occurred during the study period. In conclusion, a semi-standardized group auricular acupuncture might be an effective and safe intervention in treating insomnia in breast cancer survivors in the short term, and may reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue as well. Long-term effects remain questionable.

Efficacy of Laser Auricular Acupuncture for Smoking Cessation

ObjectivesThe aim of the current study was to compare urinary cotinine levels, nicotine dependence and physical effects related to smoking in smokers before and after laser auricular acupuncture, psychological counselling and a combination of laser treatment with counselling.MethodsThis study was carried out from February to July 2019 in India. A total of 60 smokers were randomly allocated to three interventional groups. Urinary cotinine levels, nicotine dependence and physical effects due to smoking were evaluated using NicAlert strips (Nymox Pharmaceutical Corp., Quebec, Canada) the Fagerström questionnaire and a visual analogue scale, respectively, at baseline and one month post-intervention. Pearson’s chi-square, Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance and Wilcoxon sign rank tests were used for statistical analyses.ResultsThere was a significant reduction in urinary cotinine levels and nicotine dependence and significant improvement in behaviour and physical effects related to smoking in all groups post-intervention (P <0.05). Reduction in nicotine dependence was significantly higher in the laser group (4.4 ± 1.66) compared to other groups (P <0.01). Reduction in urinary cotinine levels was highest in the laser with counselling group (0.85 ± 0.3) compared to the other groups. There was a significant reduction in irritability, headache, craving for smoking, tiredness and anxiety as well as a substantial increase in calmness, unpleasant taste of smoking, the ability to concentrate and appetite in the laser auricular acupuncture group compared to the other groups (P <0.01)ConclusionLaser auricular acupuncture alone and in combination with psychological counselling can reduce nicotine dependence among smokers.

Effects of auricular acupuncture on appetite in patients with advanced cancer: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Background:Over half of patients with advanced cancer report appetite loss or anorexia. Previous studies have shown the benefit of acupuncture for cancer-related nausea and vomiting, but limited evidence exists for its role in appetite improvement. Our study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of auricular acupuncture to improve appetite for cancer patients with advanced disease.Methods:We performed a two-arm parallel, pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of auricular acupuncture versus usual care control in patients with stage III or IV cancer who experienced appetite loss. The primary outcome was changed in the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ; score range, 4–20) between two groups from baseline to weeks 2 and 4, with secondary outcomes including change in weight, as well as an additional evaluation at week 8 for durability of treatment effects. We used independent two-sample t-test for the change in mean score for each outcome during or after treatment. We assessed the interaction between time and treatment from baseline to weeks 2, 4, and 8 using mixed-effects models by ANOVA test.Results:We randomized 55 patients to auricular acupuncture (N=27) or control group (N=28). By week 4, the auricular acupuncture group had a significantly higher escalation in the SNAQ score than the control group compared with baseline [mean difference 3.69; 95% confidential interval (95% CI): 2.5, 4.8; P<0.001] and experienced a 51.4% improvement in appetite. From baseline to weeks 2 and 4, patients lost a little weight in the control group but gained weight in the auricular acupuncture group. Between baseline and week 4, change in the SNAQ score was significantly associated with change in weight (P=0.001). No adverse events (AEs) were reported during the study.Conclusions:Compared to usual care, auricular acupuncture is feasible and safe to improve appetite and help patients with advanced cancer gain weight.

Auricular acupuncture as an adjunct for pain management during first trimester abortion: a randomized, double-blinded, three arm trial

ObjectivesTo assess pain-management using auricular acupuncture as an adjunct to ibuprofen and paracervical block during first trimester uterine aspiration, and to assess auricular acupuncture's effect on anxiety. Study designThis randomized, double-blinded, three-arm trial enrolled women undergoing uterine aspiration for spontaneous or induced abortion. Study participants were randomized 1:1:1 to receive auricular acupuncture, placebo, or usual care alone. Participants in all groups received ibuprofen and paracervical block (usual care). The main outcome was maximum pain reported at the end of the procedure measured using a Visual Analog Scale; we compared those receiving auricular acupuncture to those receiving usual care alone. We also compared auricular acupuncture to placebo and placebo to usual care alone. Finally, we compared the maximum anxiety scores between participants randomized to auricular acupuncture, placebo, and usual care alone. ResultsWe randomized 153 women over 9 months, and analyzed 52 participants in the auricular acupuncture group, 49 in the placebo group, and 49 in the usual care group. The groups had similar baseline characteristics. After uterine aspiration, participants reported median maximum pain scores as follows: auricular acupuncture 39.5 (interquartile range (IQR) 11, 64.5), placebo 70.0 (IQR 40.5, 84), and usual care alone 71.0 (IQR 32, 91.5) (p<0.01). In pairwise comparisons, the median maximum pain score after auricular acupuncture was lower than placebo and usual-care groups (p<0.01 for both). Post-procedure median anxiety scores were 11.5, 31.0 and 44.0, respectively (p=.01). ConclusionsWomen undergoing first trimester uterine aspiration assigned to auricular acupuncture reported substantially less pain and anxiety than women assigned to placebo or usual care. ImplicationsAuricular acupuncture may be a useful adjunct to ibuprofen and paracervical block during first trimester uterine aspiration. This approach to managing pain and anxiety could avoid the operational complexities and expenses of sedation and opioid use.

Auricular Acupuncture for Chronic Pain and Insomnia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objective: In the United States, ∼1.6 million adults use complementary and alternative or integrative medicine for treating pain and insomnia. However, very few studies have tested the use of auricular acupuncture using a standard protocol for chronic pain and insomnia. The aims of this research were to assess the feasibility and credibility of auricular acupuncture, and to evaluate the effects of auricular acupuncture on pain severity and interference scores, and on insomnia severity over an 8-day study period. Materials and Methods: Forty-five participants were randomized to either an auricular acupuncture group (AAG) or a usual care group (CG) on study day 4. A standard auricular acupuncture protocol was administered, with penetrating semipermanent acupuncture needles in place for up to 4 days. The main outcome measures were feasibility of conducting the study, credibility of auricular acupuncture as a treatment modality, Brief Pain Inventory pain severity and interference scores, and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores. Results: There was high interest in the study and the retention was 96%. Credibility of auricular acupuncture as a treatment was high in both groups. The use of the standard auricular acupuncture protocol in the AAG led to significant within- and between-group reduced pain severity and interference scores, compared to the CG. Both groups showed within-group decreased ISI scores. However, the AAG showed significant between-group reduced ISI severity scores compared to the CG. Conclusions: With the heightened focus on the opioid crisis in the United States, this easy-to-administer protocol may be an option for treating military beneficiaries who have chronic pain and insomnia.

Auricular acupuncture versus cognitive behavioural therapy in the discontinuation of hypnotic drug usage, and treatment effects on anxiety, depression and insomnia symptoms − a randomised controlled study

IntroductionThe interest in non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia disorder has increased. The aim was to assess the immediate treatment effects of auricular acupuncture (AA) and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-i) regarding discontinuation of hypnotic usage and symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia. MethodProspective randomised controlled study. Fifty-seven participants (mean age 61 years (SD 8.6)) with insomnia disorder and long-term use of non-benzodiazepine hypnotics received group-treatment with AA or CBT-i.Pre- and post-treatment measures included symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia via self-report questionnaires: Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD-A, HAD-D) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Other sleep parameters and hypnotic consumption were measured with a sleep diary. Linear mixed models were performed to examine treatment effect over time within and between the groups. ResultsSeventy-one percent of the AA participants and 84% of the CBT-i participants managed to discontinue their hypnotic drug consumption post-treatment. Symptoms of anxiety and depression decreased within the AA group (HAD-A (p<0.05), HAD-D (p<0.05)) and insomnia symptoms decreased within the CBT-i group (ISI (p<0.001)). The only between-group difference occurred in ISI (p<0.001), in favour of CBT-i. According to the within-group sleep diary results, the CBT-i group went to bed later (p<0.001), fell asleep quicker (p<0.05), increased their sleep efficiency (p<0.001) and self-rated sleep quality (p<0.05) post-treatment. ConclusionsBoth groups ended/maintained low hypnotic drug consumption post-treatment. Short-term reductions occurred in the AA group in anxiety and depression symptoms and in the CBT-i group regarding insomnia symptoms.

The effect of auricular acupuncture on pain during colonoscopy with midazolam and pethidine

Colonoscopy is the standard procedure for colorectal cancer screening. One of its common complications is abdominal pain. Analgesia has not provided favorable outcomes so various complementary practices have been developed, including auricular acupuncture. In this study, a randomized controlled trial of 56 patients who underwent colonoscopy was conducted to determine the effect of acupuncture on the pain experienced during colonoscopy. Subjects were divided into two groups: The first received acupuncture combined with midazolam and pethidine, while the second were administered placebo puncture in addition to midazolam and pethidine. The median Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) score was lower in the auricular acupuncture group than in the placebo puncture group(0.7 [0–4.83] vs. 1.9 [0–6.20]; p = 0.010), while there were no significant differences to median Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores (29 [0–100] vs. 44.5 [0–100]; p = 0.147), heart rate changes (−2.58 [14.31] vs.−2.43 [12.28]; p = 0.970), or the mean time to the cecum (16 [8–51] vs. 22 [5–63]; p = 0.206). Auricular acupuncture combined with midazolam and pethidine was found to be effective at reducing pain during colonoscopy.

The Effects of Auricular and Body Acupuncture in Turkish Obese Female Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial Indicated Both Methods Lost Body Weight But Auricular Acupuncture Was Better Than Body Acupuncture.

It was aimed to observe the efficacy of body acupuncture and auricular acupuncture for the management of obesity. Fifty female obese patients were randomized into 2 groups; a Body Acupuncture Group (GBA; n=25) and an Auricular Acupuncture Group (GAA; n=25). All patients were followed up for 12 weeks. Their anthropometric measurements (body weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference and hip circumference) were recorded for analysis in every 15 days. Patients were compared in terms of anthropometric measurements. Patients in the GAA received 6 sessions of auricular acupuncture in every 15 days. We used bilateral 2 points namely anti-aggression point and stomach point for auricular acupuncture. Bilateral L14, LIll, ST25, ST36, SP6, SP9, CV12, and CV6 points were selected for two times in a week (totally 24 sessions) in the GBA. Independent samples t test, patients in GAA completed the study. The mean age of patients was 36.2±10.5 years (GBA: 32.7±12.3; GAA: 39.1±7.9). The mean weight was 95.7±11.8 kg before acupuncture, and it decreased to 92.5±14.4 kg after acupuncture in GBA; and it was 95.1±15.6 kg before acupuncture and it decreased to 91.5±11.0 kg after acupuncture in GAA. Change in weight after acupuncture was 2.6±2.4 kg in GBA, and 4.2±3.4 kg in GAA (p<0.05). In both groups, changes in weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and hip circumference were statistically significant (p<0.05). Only one patient reported side effect related to acupuncture. Body acupuncture and auricular acupuncture have the therapeutic role in the management of obesity. In this study, auricular acupuncture is more effective in reducing body weight than body acupuncture. Thus, auricular may be useful and safe, non-pharmacological treatment.

Comparative observation of the efficacy on facial spasm among different therapies

To compare the differences in the clinical efficacy on facial spasm among auricular acupuncture, acupuncture and western medication. Ninety cases of facial spasm were randomized into an auricular acupuncture group, an acupuncture group and a western medication group, 30 cases in each one. In the auricular acupuncture group, yan (LO5), shenmen (TF4), xin (CO15), gan (CO12), pi (CO13), pizhixia (AT4), chuiqian (LO4), and zhen (AT3) were selected. In the acupuncture group, Baihui (GV 20), Fengchi (GB 20), Sibai (ST 2), Xiaguan (ST 7), Chengqi (ST 1), Hegu (LI 4), Taichong (LR 3) and Zusanli (ST 36) were selected. The needling therapy was given once a day in these two groups and 5 treatments as one session. There were 2 days at intervals. Totally two sessions were required. In the western medication group, carbamazepine tablets were prescribed for oral administration, 0.1 g each time, three times a day, for 7 days as one session, and totally 2 sessions were required. The facial spasmodic intensity was observed before and after treatment in the three groups. The effects were compared among the three groups. After treatment, the facial spasmodic intensity was reduced as compared with that before treatment in all of the three groups (all P<0.05). The result in the auricular acupuncture group was better than the other two groups (both P<0.05). The result in the acupuncture group was better than that in the western medication group (P<0.05). The total effective rates were 93.3% (28/30), 80.0% (24/30) and 53.3% (16/30) in the three groups separately. The efficacy in the auricular acupuncture group was better than either the acupuncture group or the western medication group (both P<0.05). The result in the acupuncture group was better than that in the western medication group (P<0.05). The efficacy in the cases with the diseases duration less than 6 months was significantly better than that in the cases with the diseases duration over 6 months (all P<0.05). What's more, the efficacy of the auricular acupuncture group were the best. The auricular acupuncture is quite optimal in the treatment of facial spasm. Its efficacy is better than that of routine acupuncture and carbamazepine. The efficacy is especially better in the cases with the diseases duration less than 6 months.

Increasing Access to Auricular Acupuncture for Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) affects more than 30% of surgical patients. Auricular acupuncture (AA) has been shown to decrease the incidence of PONV in select populations. An evidence-based quality improvement project made AA available to all adult surgical patients, and the results were recorded in a database. A retrospective between-groups analysis of 210 database entries was conducted, of those 25 receiving AA. More risk factors for PONV were present in the AA group (P<.001). Both groups experienced a less-than-expected rate of PONV. Similar rates were shown between groups for PONV, postanesthesia care unit length of stay, and opioid consumption. Patient satisfaction was 96% with AA. The AA group was treated with less antiemetic medication (P < .001), yet PONV rates remained similar. A multimodal approach treating patients at risk for PONV is recommended. Administration of multiple antiemetics may result in unnecessary cost or unfavorable side effects when effective and less costly alternatives exist. AA is a viable treatment for PONV, considering cost and patient satisfaction.

Vascular cognitive impairment with no dementia treated with auricular acupuncture and acupuncture:a randomized controlled trial

To compare the clinical efficacy on vascular cognitive impairment with no dementia (VCIND) between the combined therapy of auricular acupuncture and acupuncture and the simple acupuncture. One hundred patients of VCIND were randomized into a combined therapy of auricular acupuncture and acupuncture group (a combined therapy group) and an acupuncture group, 50 cases in each one. The basic internal medicine treatment was applied in the two groups. Additionally, in the combined therapy group, auricular acupuncture and JIN's three needling therapy were used. pizhixia (AT4), xin (CO15), shen (CO10), gan (CO12), erzhong (HX1) were selected in auricular acupuncture, once every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Niesanzhen, Zhisanzhen and Sishenzhen were selected in JIN's three needling therapy, once a day. In the acupuncture group, JIN's three needling therapy was just provided, once a day. The treatment was given for 4 weeks in the two groups. Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and social function activities questionnaire (FAQ) were adopted for the evaluation comparison before treatment and in 2 weeks and 4 weeks after treatment in patients of the two groups. Compared with those before treatment, the total scores of MoCA were improved in 2 and 4 weeks after treatment in the two groups (all P<0.01). The score in the combined therapy group was improved more apparently as compared with that in the acupuncture group (P<0.01). FAQ score was reduced in the two groups (all P<0.05). The score in the combined therapy group was reduced more apparently as compared with that in the acupuncture group (P<0.05). As compared with the result in 2 weeks of treatment, MoCA score was improved in the two groups in 4 weeks of treatment (both P<0.01), the improvements in the combined therapygroup were more obvious than those in the acupuncture group (P<0.05) and FAQ score was reduced in the two groups (P<0.05), but the difference was not significant between the two groups (P>0.05). The combined therapy of auricular acupuncture and acupuncture effectively improve the cognitive function and social function, which are better than the effects of simple acupuncture in VCIND. The improvement of the combined therapy in social function is more advantageous in the treatment of the first two weeks.

Acupuncture for Ischemic Stroke, Music for Anxiety in Mechanical Ventilation, Essential Fatty Acids for Depression, Mindfulness Meditation for Sleep in Older Adults, Tripterygium wilfordii for Rheumatoid Arthritis

The interest in non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia disorder has increased. The aim was to assess the immediate treatment effects of auricular acupuncture (AA) and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-i) regarding discontinuation of hypnotic usage and symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia.Prospective randomised controlled study. Fifty-seven participants (mean age 61 years (SD 8.6)) with insomnia disorder and long-term use of non-benzodiazepine hypnotics received group-treatment with AA or CBT-i.Pre- and post-treatment measures included symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia via self-report questionnaires: Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD-A, HAD-D) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Other sleep parameters and hypnotic consumption were measured with a sleep diary. Linear mixed models were performed to examine treatment effect over time within and between the groups.Seventy-one percent of the AA participants and 84% of the CBT-i participants managed to discontinue their hypnotic drug consumption post-treatment. Symptoms of anxiety and depression decreased within the AA group (HAD-A (p < 0.05), HAD-D (p < 0.05)) and insomnia symptoms decreased within the CBT-i group (ISI (p < 0.001)). The only between-group difference occurred in ISI (p < 0.001), in favour of CBT-i. According to the within-group sleep diary results, the CBT-i group went to bed later (p < 0.001), fell asleep quicker (p < 0.05), increased their sleep efficiency (p < 0.001) and self-rated sleep quality (p < 0.05) post-treatment.Both groups ended/maintained low hypnotic drug consumption post-treatment. Short-term reductions occurred in the AA group in anxiety and depression symptoms and in the CBT-i group regarding insomnia symptoms.
