Ratio-dependent competitions between a Wolbachia-uninfected bisexual strain and Wolbachia-infected thelytokous strain of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

BackgroundWolbachia-infected thelytokous Trichogramma wasps have been considered as potential effective biocontrol agents against lepidopteran pests in agriculture and forests. However, intra-specific competition may arise when Wolbachia-infected thelytokous Trichogramma coexist with their uninfected bisexual counterparts in fields or during mass-rearing procedures. This competition could potentially impact the efficacy of Trichogramma females in biological control programs.ResultsThis study examined the parasitic capacities of bisexual (TdB) and Wolbachia-infected thelytokous (TdT) strains of Trichogramma dendrolimi as influenced by host density (ranging from 5 to 70 host eggs) and wasp density (two, four, and six females per arena). The experiments involved inter-strain competition between TdB and TdT strains (Inter-Td) as well as intra-strain competition within the TdT (Intra-TdT) or TdB (Intra-TdB) strains. Results revealed that females in the Inter-Td group exhibited a higher attack rate compared to those in the Intra-TdT and Intra-TdB groups, irrespective of wasp density. Specifically, when six females were present, the Inter-Td group showed significantly shorter host handling times than the Intra-TdT group. Within intra-strain cohorts, TdT females displayed a lower attack rate than TdB females when four or six females were present, and longer host handling times when six females were present. Mutual interference between individuals was not affected by competition types. Females of the Inter-Td group exhibited a higher probability of superparasitism than those of the Intra-TdB group or Inter-Td group. When both strains coexisted, the proportion of TdT offspring with six females was higher than that with two females or four females. Male ratios of bisexual offspring in Inter-Td groups were higher than those in Intra-TdB groups. The male ratio of bisexual offspring in the Inter-Td group increased with wasp density.ConclusionsOur study highlights the negative impact of Wolbachia on parasitic capacity of Trichogramma females, increasing the likelihood of superparasitism. The coexistence of both strains enhances total parasitic efficacy, albeit resulting in a higher proportion of male offspring compared to scenarios with only uninfected females. The results will provide the reference for the usage of Wolbachia-infected thelytokous strain of T. dendrolimi in augmentative biological control programs.

Testing the Effects of Prey Type on the Life History and Population-Level Parameters of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

Green lacewings are valuable predators, utilized in augmentative biological control against various agricultural pests. However, further studies are required to comprehend the performance of these predators when consuming natural prey. We investigated the capacity of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) to utilize the following three distinct prey types: the pupae of the coffee leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville & Perrottet), the eggs of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (F.), and the eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller). The first two of these species are naturally occurring prey found in field crops, while the last serves as a factitious prey species for the mass rearing of natural enemies. We hypothesized that the type of prey would differentially affect the life history and population-level parameters of C. externa. Laboratory experiments were conducted to compare the pre-imaginal survival and developmental times, adult longevity and reproduction, and population growth of C. externa when larvae were provided with each of the three prey items. Results indicated that C. externa utilized the two natural prey items, L. coffeella pupae and D. saccharalis eggs, for its development, reproduction, and population growth. However, larvae developed significantly faster and females exhibited higher reproductive parameters, including fecundity and daily oviposition, when consuming the factitious prey, E. kuehniella eggs. This resulted in a higher intrinsic rate of population increase, as well as shorter times for the population to double in size. Understanding the population dynamics of C. externa when consuming different prey items is crucial for optimizing their utilization in augmentative biological control programs.

Optimizing the releasing strategy used for the biological control of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis by Trichogramma galloi with computer modeling and simulation

One of the challenges in augmentative biological control programs is the definition of releasing strategy for natural enemies, especially when macro-organisms are involved. Important information about the density of insects to be released and frequency of releases usually requires a great number of experiments, which implies time and space that are not always readily available. In order to provide science-based responses for these questions, computational models offer an in silico option to simulate different biocontrol agent releasing scenarios. This allows decision-makers to focus their efforts to more feasible options. The major insect pest in sugarcane crops is the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis, which can be managed using the egg parasitoid Trichogramma galloi. The current strategy consists in releasing 50,000 insects per hectare for each release, in three weekly releases. Here, we present a simulation model to check whether this releasing strategy is optimal against the sugarcane borer. A sensitive analysis revealed that the population of the pest is more affected by the number of releases rather than by the density of parasitoids released. Only the number of releases demonstrated an ability to drive the population curve of the pest towards a negative growth. For example, releasing a total of 600,000 insects per hectare in three releases led to a lower pest control efficacy that releasing only 250,000 insects per hectare in five releases. A higher number of releases covers a wider range of time, increasing the likelihood of releasing parasitoids at the correct time given that the egg stage is short. Based on these results, it is suggested that, if modifications to the releasing strategy are desired, increasing the number of releases from 3 to 5 at weekly intervals is most likely preferable.

Optimizing the Release Pattern of Telenomus podisi for Effective Biological Control of Euschistus heros in Soybean.

An augmentative biological control program using the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is a promising tool for the management of the brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in soybeans. The T. podisi are released as adults or pupae within lab-reared E. heros eggs. Because of the small size of the parasitoid and potentially limited dispersal ability, determining the optimal release pattern is critical for biological control of the target pest. This study used sentinel E. heros eggs to investigate T. podisi dispersal within soybean crops during two distinct phenological stages: the beginning of flowering (Vn-R1) and the grain-filling phase (R5-R6). Data were analyzed using semi-variograms and kriging maps. The results indicate significant differences in parasitism rates between the two plant growth stages and among different matrices. The maximum dispersal range for T. podisi was calculated at 39.0 m in the Vn-R1 stage with a maximum parasitism rate of 42%, while in the R5-R6 stage, the maximum dispersal range was calculated to be 30.9 m with a maximum parasitism of 73%. Therefore, it is recommended that release points for T. podisi be spaced no further than 30 m apart. These results provide valuable insights for future research and applications in biological control strategies, including adjustment of the logistics and release technique depending upon the crop phenological stage.

Comparative demographics, population projections and egg maturation patterns of four eupelmid egg parasitoids on the factitious host Antherae pernyi.

The genera Anastatus and Mesocomys (both Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) are important solitary egg endoparasitoids as biological control agents for lepidopterous and hemipterous pests worldwide. Here, we comparatively evaluated the demographic parameters of four important eupelmid egg parasitoids (Anastatus fulloi, A. japonicus, Mesocomys albitarsis and M. trabalae) reared on the factitious host eggs of the Chinese oak silkworm Antheraea pernyi, using age-stage two-sex life tables, their population projections as well as egg maturation patterns. Both the age-specific net reproductive rate (lx mx ) and reproductive value (vxj ) increased initially and then gradually decreased with increasing age in all four parasitoid species. Overall, the two Mesocomys species had higher survival rates at stable age-stage distribution, peak reproductive values, and intrinsic rates of increase than the two Anastatus species. Mesocomys albitarsis had the longest longevity while A. japonicus had the longest oviposition days and mean generation time. The two Mesocomys species are thus projected to have faster population increase than the two Anastatus species. Adult females of all four parasitoid species emerged with only a few mature eggs (< 6 eggs) and most of their eggs were matured post-emergence (i.e., strict synovigeny). The estimated 90% of lifetime complement of reproduction (offspring) and realized days were 374 and 32 for A. japonicus, 337 and 22 for M. trabalae, 330 and 19 for M. albitarsis and 147 and 28 for A. fulloi. Our results indicated that the two Mesocomys species have higher control capacity than the two Anastatus species. Provision of adult food for these strictly synovigenic parasitoids would be essential to prolong their lifespan and continuously produce eggs for parasitizing their hosts for mass rearing or augmentative biological control programs. Functional response of 3 green lacewing species (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) to Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae).

Green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) are predators commonly found in coffee plantations in Brazil that can serve as important biological control agents against insect pests such as the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). However, the efficacy of different lacewing species in controlling L. coffeella needs to be evaluated before they are used in augmentative biological control programs. Here, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the L. coffeella developmental stage on the functional response of 3 species of green lacewings: Chrysoperla externa, Ceraeochrysa cincta, and Ceraeochrysa cornuta. The attack rate, handling time, and the number of prey attacked during 24 h with different densities (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 individuals) of either L. coffeella larvae or pupae were recorded for each of the 3 lacewing species. Based on logistic regression models, all 3 predators showed a Type II functional response when consuming both larvae and pupae of L. coffeella. All 3 species also had similar attack rates (0.0091 larva/h and 0.0095 pupa/h), handling times (3.5 and 3.7 h for larvae and pupae, respectively), and estimated number of prey attacked during the observation period (6.9 larvae and 6.6 pupae) for L. coffeella larvae and pupae. Therefore, our laboratory studies show that the 3 green lacewings Ch. externa, Ce. cincta, and Ce. cornuta have potential for the biological control of L. coffeella, although these results need to be confirmed under field conditions. These findings have implications for the selection of lacewings for augmentative L. coffeella biocontrol.

Assessing the efficacy of un and gamma-irradiated entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae as an eco-friendly approach to control Agrotis ipsilon larvae

The black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) is one of the most devastating agricultural pests that attack different crops worldwide. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been utilized in classical, conservation, and augmentative biological control programs. Consequently, this study was designed to estimate the efficacy of an unirradiated and gamma-irradiated entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae (all), against A. ipsilon larvae as a safe control tool to reduce chemical environmental hazards. The virulence of different concentrations (10, 20, 30 and 40 IJs/ml) of unirradiated and gamma-irradiated (with 2 Gy) of S. carpocapsae was evaluated. Changes in peroxidase (Px) and polyphenyl oxidase (PPO) zymographic patterns were also investigated after larvae were treated with LC50 values for S. carpocapsae. The results revealed that larval mortality increased with increasing S. carpocapsae concentration and time after treatment. The 2 Gy gamma-irradiated S. carocapsae caused a greater pathogenic effect than the unirradiated S. carocapsae, where the LC50 values of 2 Gy gamma-irradiated S. carocapsae were 31.19 and 17.78 IJs/ml after 1 and 2 days, respectively, compared to 113.23 and 65.83 IJs/ml for unirradiated S. carocapsae. For the toxicity index, gamma irradiation at a dose of 2 Gy was selected and given an arbitrary 100 units and considered a standard treatment. Analysis of gel electrophoresis revealed 3 bands of Px and PPO in control larvae; treatment with unirradiated and irradiated S. carpocapsae caused the disappearance of the first band of both enzymes and lowered the intensity of the other 2 bands. The laboratory studies revealed that 2 Gy gamma-irradiated S. carpocapsae could be used as an eco-safe management tool against A. ipsilon larvae under field conditions.

Performance of two egg parasitoids of brown marmorated stink bug before and after cold storage.

Introduction: The genus Trissolcus includes a number of egg parasitoids that are known to contribute to the control of Halyomorpha halys. The number of progenies, particularly females, is important for the efficient mass rearing of species used in augmentative biological control programs. Cold storage is an important technique for extending the shelf life of natural enemies used in such programs. Methods: We assessed how fecundity, sex ratio, lifespan, and the number of hosts parasitized within 24h were affected by host density for T. japonicus and T. cultratus when offered fresh H. halys eggs and how these parameters were affected if adult parasitoids were first placed in cold storage (11°C in the dark) for 19weeks before being used for propagation. Results: The fecundity were 110.2 and 84.2 offspring emerged at 25°C, for parasitoids not placed in cold storage; among the offspring that emerged, 82.6% and 85.6% were female for T. japonicus and T. cultratus, respectively. If first placed in cold storage, T. japonicus and T. cultratus produced 35.1 and 24.6 offspring per female, respectively, although cold storage significantly extended the shelf life. The survival rates of parasitoids that were placed in cold storage were 90.3% and 81.3% for females, and 3.2% and 0.9% for males of T. japonicus and T. cultratus, respectively. The number of hosts parasitized within 24h was not shown to be density dependent, but it was significantly lower after cold storage. Discussion: This information can be used to estimate the likely production for augmented rearing colonies for use in biological control programs.

Trophic links between soil predatory mites and nematodes as a key component of conservation biocontrol

Biological control is an important ecosystem service for soil and plant health and has been successfully exploited, especially through augmentative biological control programs, for above-ground agricultural pest control often using predatory mites of Mesostigmata. Similar success has not been achieved for below-ground systems. Predatory mites are an important part of soil food webs, in which they have a regulatory impact. While this is mediated by the predator on the prey, recent studies suggest that biocontrol efficiency can be enhanced in the mid to long term for generalist predators by the presence of complementary prey. In below-ground systems, nematodes are an important food source and numerous species of predatory mites in soil may prefer them. Thus, nematodes are a viable and accessible alternative prey for these natural enemies. Our aim was to review the studies on mite-nematode trophic interactions and how these interactions affect the regulatory activity of predatory mites in soil. We found ca. 170 publications reporting a predator-prey interaction. The majority of the studies were conducted in the laboratory (149 studies), but important correlations between nematode and mite densities have been observed in greenhouses and in the open field. Most reports involved free-living nematodes (FLN), followed by plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) and finally animal-parasitic nematodes (APN). These reports are for Astigmatina, Endeostigmata, Prostigmata, Oribatida (non-Astigmatina) and Mesostigmata, the latter group being the one in which most nematophagous species are known. The family with the most reports of nematophagy is Ascidae (46 species), followed by Macrochelidae and Laelapidae (both with 30 species). In many cases, a positive effect on reproductive parameters and developmental times of mite species has been observed with a nematode-based diet, especially FLN. Although still scarce, studies on species of Laelapidae, Macrochelidae, Parasitidae and Rhodacaridae have shown that supplementing FLN in the diet can favor reproduction and development, even though preference may change at different stages of development. Also, recent studies have shown that some organic amendments can increase the density and diversity of mites, FLN or both, enhancing top down forces by predatory mites in the soil food web. Although some steps have been taken, future studies should focus on transferring laboratory research to field and semi-field conditions. For this, a multidisciplinary approach is essential.

Development of rearing methodology for the invasive Spotted Lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae).

Lycorma delicatula, White (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), spotted lanternfly, is a univoltine, phloem-feeding, polyphagous and invasive insect in the USA. Although a primary host for this species is Ailanthus altissima, tree of heaven, L. delicatula also feeds on a wide range of hosts important to the USA including cultivated grapevines. Due to the need for classical or augmentative biological control programs to reduce impacts of L. delicatula across invaded areas, we developed a laboratory-based rearing protocol for this invasive species. Here, we evaluated the use of A. altissima apical meristems, epicormic shoots, and fresh foliage cut from A. altissima as a food source for rearing newly hatched L. delicatula. On these sources of plant material <20% of L. delicatula developed into adults and no oviposition occurred. However, when young, potted A. altissima trees were used as a food source, >50% of L. delicatula nymphs developed to the adult stage under natural daylengths and temperatures ranging from 20-25°C. The addition of wild grapevine, Vitis riparia, did not increase survivorship or reduce development time. To elicit mating and oviposition, adults were provided with A. altissima logs as an oviposition substrate and maintained under shortened daylengths and reduced nighttime temperatures (12L:12D and 24°C:13°C). This resulted in 2.12 egg masses deposited per female, which was 4× more than when adults were maintained in standard rearing conditions (16L:8D and 25°C). Based on these experiments, we present a protocol for reliably rearing L. delicatula under laboratory and/or greenhouse conditions.

Glandular trichomes affect mobility and predatory behavior of two aphid predators on medicinal cannabis

Medicinal cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is a growing agro-industrial sector with the end product required to be free of pesticides. C. sativa is covered by specialized hairs called trichomes, namely, two types of non-glandular and three types of glandular trichomes. Despite the great importance of biological pest control in medicinal cannabis little is known about the impact of cannabis trichomes on natural enemies mobility and their interaction with prey. In the current study, by employing a video recording set-up, we determined the mobility of Aphidoletes aphidimyza and Chrysoperla carnea larvae and their interaction with the aphid pests Phorodon cannabis and Aphis gossypii on C. sativa leaf disks and inflorescences. As benchmark, we tested the same parameters on sweet pepper leaf disks, a benign host plant for both predators, and without trichomes. It was found, that A. aphidimyza females readily oviposited on P. cannabis colonies developing on C. sativa plants. On C. sativa leaves, covered by non-glandular trichomes, the larvae of both predators were able to move and prey upon aphids. On C. sativa inflorescences, where glandular trichomes prevailed, the larvae of A. aphidimyza were generally inactive while the C. carnea larvae were still able to move and interact with prey albeit to a lesser degree compared to the cannabis leaves. We suggest that the use of A. aphidimyza and C. carnea in augmentative biological control programs in medicinal cannabis should depend on the croṕs growth stage; the former should be employed during the vegetative while the latter during the vegetative and flowering crop stages.

Effect of the Amount of Ephestia kuehniella Eggs for Rearing on Development, Survival, and Reproduction of Orius laevigatus.

Simple SummaryEconomical mass rearing of natural enemies is pivotal for their use as augmentative biological control agents. To this end, the conditions for mass production have been widely investigated for different natural enemies, including the predator Orius laevigatus. The key component for cost optimization of production systems is the type and amount of diet supplied. In the case of O. laevigatus, Ephestia kuehniella eggs have proved to be nutritionally superior to other cheaper natural and artificial foods. Consequently, the current practice in industrial production is the use of these eggs as food. Therefore, there is a need to know the minimum amount of Ephestia eggs needed per individual leading to a cost reduction, which in turn will favor biological control adoption. In this study, we established a minimum of 1 and 3 Ephestia eggs per day for the first two nymphal instars, respectively, and 8 eggs per day for subsequent development until adulthood. Benefits and savings for industrial production of O. laevigatus and its use in biological control are discussed.Orius laevigatus is a key tool for the success of augmentative biological control programs in protected crops. This biological control agent is mass-reared feeding on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella. However, this factitious prey is expensive, accounting for a significant percentage of the rearing costs. Therefore, there is a need to optimize the amount of Ephestia eggs needed per individual leading to a cost reduction, which in turn will favor biological control adoption. This study investigated the effect of the amount of Ephestia eggs provided on the developmental and reproductive fitness of O. laevigatus. At least a daily supply of 1 and 3 Ephestia eggs was needed for optimal development of the first two nymphal instars, respectively, although for maximum survival, 1 egg was enough for both instars. For subsequent development until adulthood, a minimum of 8 eggs per day were needed to fully support growth, but only 3 eggs for optimal survival. Similarly, male body size was also maximized by feeding 8 eggs, but for maximum female body size 10 eggs per day were required. Oviposition rate of females increased with the daily number of Ephestia eggs provided, until a plateau was reached at 8 eggs/day. Benefits and savings for industrial production of O. laevigatus are discussed.

Generation-dependent functional and numerical responses of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Acari: Phytoseiidae) long-term reared on almond pollen

ABSTRACT It is important to know how the quality of predators changes during different generations of rearing. Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) reared on almond pollen for 30 generations (G1-G30) was evaluated for searching efficacy and ovipoisition behaviour on Tetranychus urticae Koch as prey. The functional and numerical responses were determined every ten generations by offering a range of prey densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 nymphs) under standard conditions (25 ± 1°C, 60 ± 5% RH, and a photoperiod of L16:D8 h). In all generation tested N. cucumeris exhibited a type II functional response. The attack rate and handling time declined until G20, but increased from then onwards. The highest estimated maximum predation rate (T/Th ) was in G20 (86 prey/day), while the lowest was in G1 (53 prey/day). The quality of mass-reared predators did not decline against T. urticae prey after different periods of rearing on pollen. Mites reared for an extended period on almond pollen were equivalent or even better than mites reared for a short period because of higher predation and oviposition rates at each prey density. Based on this study and those we have already conducted, we propose almond pollen is a good candidate for the mass rearing of N. cucumeris for use in augmentative biological control programmes.

Monitoring of Mutual Interference Behavior of Trichogramma brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) over 45 Generations of Rearing on Angoumois Grain Moth.

Trichogramma brassicae (Bezdenko) is one of the most common species of natural enemies used in augmentative biological control programs in many countries. Understanding of the foraging behavior of a parasitoid can help us to improve its performance under field conditions. This study is the first assessment of trends in mutual interference behavior of T. brassicae under long-term mass rearing (over 45 generations) on a common factitious host, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier). Our results revealed that the total parasitism rate of T. brassicae reared on S. cerealella eggs was significantly affected by parasitoid densities and number of generations under continuous rearing. Also, parasitoid density and number of generations in rearing had significant effects on the per capita parasitism rate. Meanwhile, per capita searching efficiencies were different in sequential generations and at different densities. The number of hosts parasitized per parasitoid decreased on day 1 of the experiment with increasing parasitoid density, showing the effect of mutual interference. The linear regression between the natural logarithm of per capita searching efficiency and the natural logarithm of parasitoid density showed an inverse relationship. While the m (interference coefficient) values increased, the Q (quest constant) values had a decreasing trend over 45 generations. The highest (- 0.167) and lowest (- 0.242) values of m were observed in G45 and G5, respectively. Accordingly, G5 and G45 had the highest (0.053) and lowest (0.023) Q values, respectively. Thus, it seems the negative effects of mutual interference decreased over generations.

Influence of tobacco on the behavior, parasitism and mortality of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) associated with eggs of Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), is widely used in augmentative biological control programs. However, there is no information on the behavior and biology of this parasitoid in stored tobacco. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the chemotactic response, parasitism, and mortality of females of T. pretiosum parasitizing eggs of Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the presence of different tobacco types. The chemotactic responses of T. pretiosum females were observed with a double and multiple choice olfactometer. The odors of dry Burley and Virginia tobacco and of Virginia tobacco seedlings were evaluated. Treatments with or without the presence of E. kuehniella eggs were compared. To evaluate parasitism with and without choice, eggs of E. kuehniella adhered to the same tobacco used in the olfactometer. The eggs of E. kuehniella were offered to a female of T. pretiosum for 2 h, with adult parasitoid mortality recorded. In double-choice olfactometer there was no attraction of T. pretiosum females to the odors of the different types and classes of dry tobacco evaluated when compared to the control (air). Only tobacco seedlings and E. kuehniella eggs attracted the parasitoid. Females of T. pretiosum preferred tobacco infested with host eggs regardless of the type and class of tobacco. In multiple-choice olfactometer T. pretiosum females spent the same time in the area of the arms containing tobacco as in the area of arm containing control (air). The percentage of apparent parasitism of T. pretiosum varied according to the surface on which the host's eggs adhered. Although females of T. pretiosum responded positively to the host's volatiles, even with the presence of dry tobacco, when they came into direct contact with some types and classes of tobacco there was no parasitism.

First record of a new microsporidium pathogenic to Gonipterus platensis in Brazil

Microsporidia are naturally occurring fungal-related parasites that can infect nearly all animal hosts, but their biocontrol potential of insect pests is routinely overlooked in agriculture and forestry. This research brings the first report describing the natural occurrence of a microsporidium causing disease in field-collected populations of the invasive eucalyptus snout beetle, Gonipterus platensis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a major destructive pest of eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. Adult beetles were collected during field surveys in commercial eucalyptus plantations in southern Brazil to be examined and dissected with typical symptoms to verify presence of microsporidian spores in haemolymph. From 14 plantations in different sites, the natural infection occurrence in these populations ranged from 0 to 65%, while a lab colony exhibited an infection incidence of 70%. Spore density in haemolymph of symptomatic insects averaged 2.1 (± 0.4) × 107 spores/beetle. Symptoms in infected adults were identified by an abnormal abdomen with malformation of the second pair of wings, impairing their flight activity. Electron transmission microscopy of the pathogen showed morphological features similar to species belonging to the genus Nosema or Vairimorpha. Phylogenetic analysis of the full-length small subunit ribosomal RNA gene suggests this pathogen’s placement in the genus Vairimorpha, but with a sequence identity of ~ 94% with the nearest neighbours. The low level of sequence identity suggests this pathogen may represent a novel taxon in the genus and further requires whole genome sequencing for definitive taxonomic resolution. These findings provide insights on the natural occurrence of this novel pathogen of this invasive pest in Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. Further studies are needed to determine potential of this microsporidium in the design of conservative or augmentative biological control programs for this invasive pest.

Intrinsic Interspecific Competition Between Telenomus podisi and Trissolcus teretis (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae).

The competition between Telenomus podisi Ashmead and Trissolcus teretis (Johnson) parasitizing eggs of Diceraeus melacanthus (Dallas) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) was studied in three different laboratory bioassays to gather knowledge in order to improve stink bug management and to strengthen the preservation of naturally occurring parasitoid species. The impact of parasitoid sequence and time intervals (4 to 192 h) between parasitoid species was evaluated. Competition of Te. podisi and Tr. teretis for the same host favored the parasitoid encountering the egg host first, as it usually outcompetes the second parasitoid. We conclude that it is unwarranted in a short-term goal to release both species together in augmentative biological control programs since the repeated release of Te. podisi led to higher parasitism than any other studied variation of parasitoid sequence. However, simultaneous release of multiple species could be important to help the preservation of the diversity of scelionids in the agroecosystem, a hypothesis that needs to be further investigated in future research.

Aphidophagous hoverflies reduce foxglove aphid infestations and improve seed set and fruit yield in sweet pepper

Larvae of many hoverfly species prey upon aphids, whereas the adults, by relying on nectar and pollen, contribute to the pollination of many plant species. Despite their great potential for pest control and pollination, important gaps still exist regarding the efficacy of hoverflies in regulating infestations of major aphid pests in augmentative biological control programs. Here, we tested the potential of the commercially available hoverflies Eupeodes corollae and Sphaerophoria rueppellii to regulate populations of the foxglove aphid Aulacorthum solani in sweet pepper. In a semi-field experiment, aphid numbers were 93.2% and 78.4% lower in the E. corollae and S. rueppellii treatments, respectively, compared to the control. Fruit yield was increased by 390% and 361% and seed set by 395% and 399% for E. corollae and S. rueppellii. In a separate laboratory trial, we found that under conditions of limited prey, hoverfly larvae did not complete development, but that larvae of S. rueppellii survived significantly longer than larvae of E. corollae. We have shown for the first time that E. corollae and S. rueppellii can reduce infestations of foxglove aphid in sweet pepper. The limited amount of prey, related to the small size of the A. solani colonies, means that hoverfly larvae were often not able to complete development. In practice, repeated releases of hoverflies, possibly in combination with other natural enemies, might be used to achieve effective suppression of A. solani infestations. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Antennal Transcriptome Analysis and Identification of Candidate Chemosensory Genes of the Harlequin Ladybird Beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

Simple SummaryThe predatory harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) has been widely released for classical and augmentative biological control programs of insect herbivores and is now distributed worldwide. Because of its invasive behavior and the threat it can pose to local biodiversity, this ladybird has been adopted as a model species for invasive biocontrol predators. A huge amount of existing literature is available on this species. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying H. axyridis smell and taste, even though these senses are important in this ladybird for courtship, mating, and for locating suitable habitats for feeding and oviposition. Here we describe the first chemosensory gene repertoire that is expressed in the antennae of male and female H. axyridis. Our findings would likely represent the basis for future functional studies aiming at increasing the efficacy of H. axyridis in biological control or at reducing its populations in those areas where the ladybird has become a matter of concern due to its invasiveness.In predatory ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), antennae are important for chemosensory reception used during food and mate location, and for finding a suitable oviposition habitat. Based on NextSeq 550 Illumina sequencing, we assembled the antennal transcriptome of mated Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) males and females and described the first chemosensory gene repertoire expressed in this species. We annotated candidate chemosensory sequences encoding 26 odorant receptors (including the coreceptor, Orco), 17 gustatory receptors, 27 ionotropic receptors, 31 odorant-binding proteins, 12 chemosensory proteins, and 4 sensory neuron membrane proteins. Maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses allowed to assign candidate H. axyridis chemosensory genes to previously described groups in each of these families. Differential expression analysis between males and females revealed low variability between sexes, possibly reflecting the known absence of relevant sexual dimorphism in the structure of the antennae and in the distribution and abundance of the sensilla. However, we revealed significant differences in expression of three chemosensory genes, namely two male-biased odorant-binding proteins and one male-biased odorant receptor, suggesting their possible involvement in pheromone detection. Our data pave the way for improving the understanding of the molecular basis of chemosensory reception in Coccinellidae.

Performance of the parasitoid species Aphelinus asychis Walker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), Aphidius ervi (Haliday)\xa0(Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), using Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as host

Three parasitoid species viz. Aphelinus asychis Walker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), Aphidius ervi (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizing the aphid species Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in mid-hills of north India were studied. At different locations and times of the year, the parasitization by A. asychis, A. ervi, and D. rapae ranged from 7.53 to 37.58, 4.26 to 80.45, and 74.25 to 80.48%, respectively. All the 3 parasitoids successfully completed their development on different nymphal instars of the aphid host and the total developmental duration of A. asychis, A. ervi, and D. rapae ranged 10.4–14.6, 24.2–29.6, and 10.2–15.2 days, respectively. It was significantly longer on the 1st nymphal instar of the host. The longevity of the female parasitoids was significantly longer than their counterparts. Differences in host age significantly influenced the longevity of female parasitoids and it was more on 1 to 2-day-old nymphs than that on 4 to 5-day-old nymphs. Fecundity and ovipositional periods of the parasitoids on younger (1–2 days old) host age group were considerably prolonged than on the older ages of the aphid. Average total fecundity of A. asychis and D. rapae was significantly higher when parasitizing 1–2-day-old nymphs. In A. asychis, host feeding behavior was also observed by a total host feeding of 89.2 aphids (1–2 days old) and 43.4 aphids (4–5 days old) during its life span. It is concluded that A. asychis, A. ervi, and D. rapae can be mass reared using M. persicae as host and can be utilized successfully in augmentative biological control program.
