Event Abstract Back to Event A Time-Warping Method for the Concentration of Nearly Periodic Signals in EEG Frequency Spectra. Baptiste Chemin1*, Gan Huang1, 2 and André Mouraux1 1 Université catholique de Louvain, Institute of Neuroscience, Belgium 2 Sun Yat Sen University, China The frequency-tagging approach is a technique that is increasingly used to study the cortical activities related to rhythmic processes: the periodic activities appear as clear peaks in the EEG spectrum. However, many rhythms are not strictly periodic and rather have a period that fluctuates over time. The nearly periodic activities are blurred in the EEG spectrum, as the peaks are spread out to neighboring frequencies. Here, we introduce a time-warping method to align nearly-periodic EEG signals on a constant period and therefore concentrate the signal in the frequency spectrum. We applied this method to signals recorded in participants performing a repetitive finger tapping movement. When the signals are not time-warped, no peak significantly stand out from the background noise. In contrast, when the signals are time-warped, clear peaks are identified in the frequency spectrum with a topography contralateral to the tapping finger. Furthermore, we used the time-warping method to disentangle concurrent stream of auditory and motor signals recorded in participants tapping in synchrony with an acoustic rhythm. This was rendered possible by the fact that the neural activity related to the production of movements presents a unique pattern of period fluctuations that distinguishes it from the neural activity related to the processing of the auditory rhythm. The proposed time warping procedure thus appears as a simple and effective tool to study non strictly periodic neural processes related to rhythmic movement production, auditory rhythm perception and, more generally, sensorimotor synchronization.
