An audit was undertaken using the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (ASCN) UK nursing standards to allow the stoma care team to benchmark their current service. Patients were contacted 1 month after discharge from hospital, and a telephone interview was conducted using the ASCN audit questionnaire. The data were analysed and presented to the team, and an action plan was agreed. Results highlighted that, although there were many areas of good practice, there were also areas that needed improvement, including offering patients a preoperative chance to meet another stoma patient and making them aware of their individualised care plan and of potential stoma complications prior to discharge. In addition, patients needed sufficient time to discuss how they felt and to be informed about relevant support groups and prescription changes relating to their appliance and accessory requirements.
