Developing smart archives in society 5.0: Leveraging artificial intelligence for managing audiovisual archives in Africa

In the age of Society 5.0, marked by the profound integration of digital technologies and human society, the preservation and management of audiovisual archives in Africa face substantial challenges. The application of artificial intelligence plays a pivotal role in the establishment of digital archives in the society 5.0. The exponential growth of digital content, combined with the continent's diverse cultural landscape, presents complex obstacles to conventional archival practices. Without the effective implementation of artificial intelligence technologies, crucial aspects such as curation, accessibility and sustainable management of audiovisual archives in Africa remain hindered. Thus, the overarching problem under scrutiny pertains to how the establishment of intelligent archives, facilitated by AI, can offer innovative solutions for preserving and managing audiovisual archives in Africa, within the overarching framework of Society 5.0. This approach has the potential to significantly contribute to safeguarding Africa's rich cultural heritage and advancing research, education and cultural exchange. The purpose of this paper will be to focus on the challenges encountered by selected African countries, such as the ESARBICA countries and those that undertake environmental conservation projects, in managing their audiovisual collections and what can be done to facilitate AI. It resulted in the formulation of a framework for implementing smart archives using AI in African contexts, emphasizing practical strategies and best practices. A qualitative approach enabled a nuanced understanding of complex dynamics at play. Through the observation of AI integration processes, by means of desktop analyses of websites of African national archives and online interest groups showcasing nature conservation projects and initiatives, this article aims to capture a comprehensive picture of the current landscape and future possibilities.

Audiovisual collections safeguard undescribed calls: description of anuran vocalisations based on recordings from a public sound library

ABSTRACT Audiovisual collections in traditional private or public institutions are crucial for preserving and safeguarding natural recordings of biodiversity. These archives represent a snapshot of invaluable moments, behaviours, and interactions among species, often representing the last or only existing recordings. Therefore, animal vocalisation recordings are essential for future generations to understand the past and preserve the remaining biodiversity. In this study, we examined the largest Latin American sound archive, the Fonoteca Neotropical Jacques Vielliard, in search for anuran sounds that are not yet formally described. Herein, we describe the calls of eight species, the advertisement call of seven of them, and the release call of two of them. These species, belonging to three different families, were recorded in Brazil over the past six decades and have different conservation status. Notably, two of them are threatened by extinction and one is extinct. Our study fills important knowledge gaps about rare and declining anuran populations, highlighting the value of public scientific audiovisual collections.

PROCESSAMENTO TÉCNICO DOS ACERVOS AUDIOVISUAIS NO ARQUIVO NACIONAL

It analyzes the technical processing of these audiovisual documents at the National Archives, the main archival institution in Brazil. The general objective was to prepare an archival diagnosis on the technical processing of audiovisual archival documents at the National Archives, with three specific objectives: to conceptually discuss audiovisual documents and their insertion in the universe of archives; problematize the technical processing of audiovisual documents in archives; identify the profile of the National Archives’ audiovisual collection and its forms of entry; and map the stage of organization, level of description and digitization of the National Archives' audiovisual collection. The research contributes to improving technical treatment practices for audiovisual documents at the National Archives, providing a detailed diagnosis of the current situation. The methodology used involved the collection and analysis of documents, as well as the exploration of the National Archives Information System (SIAN) and research instruments developed by the institution's technical team. The results indicate the importance of a comprehensive and critical study on the treatment of audiovisual documents in the archival context, suggesting the need for innovative approaches to the access and preservation of audiovisual documents in archival institutions.

Interoperability of Oral History Metadata: An Ontological Model

ABSTRACT This article presents the metadata characteristics of oral history collections and the challenges faced when attempting to provide long-term access to audio or video recordings. We propose an ontological model combining the International Committee for Documentation Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRM) from the cultural heritage field with European Broadcasting Union Core (EBUCore) from the European audiovisual community. We form a mapping methodology with the goal of combining the strongest attributes from these two standards. The goal of this research is to generate a conceptual model for the description of oral history interviews in order to reveal the entities participating in the interviews, their semantics, and their relationships. The proposed model enables the meaningful exchange of information of audiovisual collections and their integration with other cultural heritage collections in the online environment.

O papel da cinemateca pernambucana na salvaguarda do patrimônio audiovisual

The objective of this research is to delineate the contributions of Cinemateca Pernambucana of the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco in the preservation and access to audiovisual collections, in order to understand how the institution develops methods and techniques to safeguard and disseminate the audiovisual heritage of Pernambuco, developed through the cinema cycles in the state’s audiovisual history. Regarding the methodological procedures, this is a qualitative research with exploratory purposes and bibliographic means. The data collection technique involved semi-structured interviews with the staff of Cinemateca Pernambucana, and the data analysis was carried out through pragmatic language analysis. As a result, it is evident that the Cinemateca, in the scope of preservation, develops strategies such as server archiving, generating backup copies, and LTO tape backups to ensure the long-term existence of Pernambuco films. Regarding access, the institution focuses on the development and education of the audience through educational practices, in addition to cinematic dissemination through its official site. It is concluded that the Cinemateca Pernambucana is an essential cultural, memorial, and educational facility, both in supporting the audiovisual production chain and in the digital preservation of representative audiovisual documents of Pernambuco cinema, contributing to their dissemination and fostering the development of cinematic culture in the state.

Managing Dust in Academic Libraries

Abstract The study investigates dust management at the Albert Ilemobade library, The Federal University of Technology Akure. Dust deposition and accumulation poses a major challenge for the university library as all the units, sections, and divisions are affected. Dust not only adversely affects all materials, equipment, and facilities including books, audiovisual collections, and computers, but also constitutes a health hazard to library personnel and users. Major sources of dust include visitor activities and infiltration through openings like windows and doors. Dust mats, special computer enclosures, dusters, dust blowers, and respiratory masks were made available for dust protection and management in the library. The library lacked equipment like High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) filters and dust collection, and suppressions systems. Lack of awareness and training, inadequate funding, and lack of equipment were identified as the challenges to dust management in the library.

Open Forum in the Dedicated Issue of East European Holocaust Studies on Oral History and the Holocaust

Abstract The events of the Holocaust are reflected in the numerous memoirs of rescued victims and witnesses of Nazi crimes. Collections of testimonies, memories and oral history on the Holocaust include thousands of early testimonies and life stories archived in for example the Yad Vashem and audio-visual collections initiated in later years such as the Institute for Visual History and Education USC Shoah Foundation, The Fortunoff Video Archives, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Yahad-In Unum and others. In this open forum we how the knowledge from collecting and using oral history and testimonies in Holocaust research can inform current collecting initiatives in relation to for example the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.

Service Analysis at the Habiburrahman Grand Mosque Library Indonesian Aerospace

This study aims to (1) determine the types of user services available at the Habiburrahman Grand Mosque Library Indonesian Aerospace (2) to find out the service system adopted by the Habiburrahman Grand Mosque Library Indonesian Aerospace (3) to find out the procedures for registering new members and the rules imposed in the Library of the Great Mosque of Habiburrahman Indonesian Aerospace. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative research methods with data collection techniques such as literature studies, interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study show that the Habiburrahman Grand Mosque Library Indonesian Aerospace has 8 types of user services, including user education services and information literacy training, reading rooms, circulation of library materials, references, photocopies, literature searches, online catalogs, and audiovisual (AV) collections. The library service system is mixed or mixed access. For visitors who want to get these various services, especially circulation services, then they need to register themselves first as members. The member registration procedure begins with preparing certain requirements, then filling out the form as well as paying the member's dues fee. Meanwhile, there are also 8 unwritten regulations stipulated as rules in the Library of the Great Mosque of Habiburrahman Indonesian Aerospace. An interesting finding lies in the architectural design that presents the typical nuances of the Indonesian ancient mosque.

Colecciones audiovisuales, observatorios de memoria y nuevos patrimonios: una perspectiva comparada.

The use and acceptance of oral sources in recent decades in the field of social sciences in Spain is reviewed, as well as their influence on the creation of audiovisual collections of interviews for the study of contemporary history. The lines of work of international public memory policies are framed and different cases of observatories and memory banks, both European and American, are analyzed to exemplify how new technologies have generated new opportunity scenarios for oral history. Likewise, other platforms are presented that have established themselves as useful tools for the dissemination and preservation of art and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, but that have also raised suspicions about the neocolonialist bias in the selection of their content. Finally, an inventory is made of the future challenges for the management of the collections and audiovisual archives of the new heritages.

Preservation of Audiovisual Collections at Albert Ilemobade Library, Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria

The study investigates audiovisual collections at the Albert Ilemobade Library, The Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Condition surveying, observation, and interview were the instruments used for data collection. Condition survey was conducted on audiovisual materials in the unit to ascertain their continuing accessibility and usability. The result revealed that most of the audiovisual materials are carrier-based analog format and are inaccessible owing to unavailability and obsolete playback equipment. Technology obsolescence, improper storage environment, lack of funding, lack of commitment by library management, and lack of trained personnel in audiovisual preservation were identified challenges of audiovisual preservation in the library. The study recommends digitization of analog carrier-based audiovisual materials, adequate funding, conducive storage environment, recruitment of preservation expert, and change of attitude to preservation of information materials.

Reading books for children is very important for a child's growth and development, especially when entering a formal educational environment such as elementary school. This activity aims to explore the benefits of having a literacy house, especially to improve children's learning abilities. Using participatory rural appraisal methods or techniques and data collection techniques through interviews, observation, focus group discussions and literature review. The results of the study show that the Ranggi Literacy House at the PWI Complex, Percut Sei Tuan, Deli Serdang acts as a source of learning for children, especially underprivileged children, a place for character formation, and a source of information for parents. in child care, community recreation and training facilities, even facilities for mothers to express their talents. The results of the study indicate that the availability of children's literature in the mother and child library services is quite adequate. Judging from the suitability of literature for the age level and information needs of children, it is in accordance with the availability of 3D collections for children who cannot read, and the availability of fairy tales, comics, religious books, history books, and other textbooks. The use of children's literature at the Ranggi Literacy House is quite good. This is shown by the enthusiasm of users in reading literature and utilizing the available facilities. Obstacles faced by the Ranggi Literacy House in improving the reading culture of its users: they do not yet have an audio-visual collection, even though audio-visual collections can contribute to improving children's reading culture because in reality children tend to prefer using technology and prefer to see and hear. However, in fulfillment of this, the Ranggi Literacy House also often holds watching folklore or other stories together as a form of character education for children.

Sbírkotvorná činnost Muzea Klementa Gottwalda – aktuální poznatky kurátorky

Examining the three-dimensional collections of the Klement Gottwald Museum in Prague (KGM), with an overlap into the context of its archival, library and audiovisual collections, allows for a demonstration of the basic aspects involved in the process of building a specialised museum collection. In this case, the focus is on the interpretation of Czechoslovak history in the 20th century. Throughout its operational period (1952–1990), the museum focused on presenting the history of the workers’ movement and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In order to provide an insight into the genesis of the KGM’s collections, three main sources of information have been identified: the institution’s registry, collection records, and the presentation of the collection items in promotional materials. The text presents one possible perspective on the exploration of sources and their potential to provide an understanding of the origins of this unique collection. The initial compilation of sources for the work of the collection’s curator is summarised here for the needs of the professional public in order to stimulate the interest in the real impact of theoretical planning of museum activities.

Blitar’s indigenous knowledge promotion through local content collections at Blitar Public Library

The public library is one of the institutions that have the function and task of preserving indigenous knowledge. Recorded in the form of collections stored in the library's local content service consist of printed books, e-books, and audio-visual collections use social media, especially Instagram, can facilitate the dissemination of indigenous knowledge information to local content collections in public libraries. This study aimed to produce media to promote Blitar's indigenous knowledge in the form of infographics with information sourced from the local content collection at the Blitar Public Library. Research method used development method and the Four-D development model with product development stages consisting of defining, designing, developing, and distributing. Respondents in this study were the people of Blitar, media promotion experts, material experts, and expert practitioners (librarians). In this study, product trials were carried out on three aspects consist of material, visual, and language. Based on the trials and validity tests results, it concludes that Blitar's local content promotion media products in the form of infographics are suitable for use with revisions. Blitar local wisdom infographics increase the reach by maximizing the use of hashtags and scheduling infographic uploads at the best times. Local content promotion media products in infographics form produced in this development research are quite good. However, there needs to be some improvement especially on material aspect. The material that was carried did not represent all local wisdom topics in Blitar.

Analisis Komponen Koleksi Berdasarkan Instrumen Akreditasi Perpustakaan Institut Bisnis dan Informatika Islam

This study aims to determine the extent to which the Indonesian Institute of Business and Informatics Library prepares for library accreditation, especially in the collection component. The instrument used in this study is the university library accreditation instrument listed in the national library regulations of the Republic of Indonesia number 10 of 2018. The library collection component has 26 key indicators with a maximum weight of 20. This research method uses a descriptive quantitative approach. The technique of collecting data is through observation and structured interviews with the drafting team for the accreditation of the Indonesian Institute of Business and Informatics Library. The results showed that the Indonesian Institute of Business and Informatics Library based on the university library accreditation instrument was estimated to get a value of 13.7 out of a maximum weight of 20 for the collection component. This means that the preparation of the Indonesian Institute of Business and Informatics Library is still not optimal and must be improved again. The library of the Indonesian Institute of Business and Informatics has the potential to increase its accreditation value derived from 16 other indicators which include the availability of collection development policies, implementation of policies, surveys of collection needs, number of printed books, titles of reference books, subscribed scientific journals, subscribed electronic journals, addition of printed book collections, number of electronic book collections, audio visual collections, number of brochures, leaflets, pamphlets, posters, subscribed databases, processing standards, enumeration, fumigation, and improvement of library materials.

The aim of the article is to describe the changes in the development of audiovisual heritage archiving in the UK through the prism of forming a network of regional audiovisual archives, outline the main directions and summarize the results of the NGO Film Archives UK (FAUK), its contribution to archiving and audio national level. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism and objectivity, systemic and interdisciplinary approaches, application of a system of scientifi c methods: theoretical (analysis, synthesis, etc.), empirical (descriptive), comparative, retrospective, chronological and morphological analysis (audiovisual heritage in some centers of its storage). The scientifi c novelty of the study is to reveal the features of the British model of archiving audiovisual heritage at the regional level. The history of formation of a number of regional audiovisual archives in Great Britain is considered, their documentary collections are investigated. Archival initiatives aimed at providing and updating audiovisual collections are summarized. The results of the non-governmental organization Film Archives UK (FAUK) are represented, its contribution to the formation of national policy in the fi eld of audiovisual archiving and the development of cooperation in this fi eld at the national level. Conclusions. The UK’s audiovisual archives, which bring together national and regional collections, are an important part of the world’s audiovisual heritage; their scope, role and importance will inevitably increase with the development of digital and audiovisual technologies. The unprecedented impact of digitization on the fi eld of audiovisual archiving points to the need for transformation and increasing challenges facing archives. This requires interaction and partnership between the country’s audiovisual archives. An important role in this is played by the non-governmental organization Film Archives UK (FAUK), which is an institutional platform for coordinating actions aimed at developing the network of British audiovisual archives and shaping national policy in the fi eld of audiovisual archiving.

Kebijakan Penyiangan Koleksi Perpustakaan Pusat Penelitian Bioteknologi Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia

Library of Research Center of Biotechnology Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PPPB-LIPI) has been existing for 34 years. The collection development and improve progress in biotechnology science that has been growing rapidly, it is must a library to keep up transformation with this development in this age. The fact, the library’s out of date printed collection still exist. Because of that, it is necessary to review subject and physical library collection. This analysis’s aims to make a data for library collection weeding policy to know what type, subject and year of a library collection that is going to weed, library collection that is needed in the future and as tools collection development for furthermore, library collection development policy hereafter. This analysis uses survey method. Data collection is done which disseminates questionnaire to the researcher and literature study. The result shows that 40% of the printed collections are maintained with the textbook criteria of 55.9%. PPPB-LIPI is suggested to prioritize audio visual collections to 86.4%, the type of audio-visual acquisition is 39% computer files, 39% online information on the internet. Based on the publication’s year, 54.2% of the library collections weeding list are those over the past 15 years, fields outside of biotechnology that defended are chemistry at 64.2%. This research produces data to formulate collection weeding policies, namely the types of printed collections that is weeded immediately are journals, the subjects of the collections that defended are chemistry, pharmacy, animal husbandry, plants.

Uses of legacy recordings by Ngarinyin, Worrorra and Wunambal practitioners of the dance-song genre known as Junba from the Kimberley region of north-west Australia for the purposes of revitalising the tradition with repertoire and increasing participation have been previously discussed (e.g., Treloyn, S., M. D. Martin, and R. G. This paper, co-authored by two cultural custodians of practices and repertories of the dance-song genre known as Junba and an outsider ethnomusicologist, considers social and political agency through performance in relation to legacy recordings. The paper finds that legacy recordings of song and dance practice can throw light on political and social agendas of past performances, while creative reuse of frameworks and materials derived from legacy recordings of song and dance can support contemporary practitioners to express their own social and political agency today. The paper also suggests that attention to the social and political agency of cultural custodians is an important part of the work of archives, particularly where barriers to accessing legacy recordings remain.
