The 1990s was a strange time to be alive: a saxophone playing U.S. president waltzed into a Cold War vacuum left behind by the crumbling of the Soviet Eastern Bloc, while Gulf War 1.0 was the first mediated war, yet one lacking any meaningful optics - Baudrillard's so-called weak event. Meanwhile, technology, culture and information was rapidly beginning to coalesce in unexpected ways. The 1990s was more of a feeling than a knowing, there was certainly change afoot and the clock was ticking on a century of acceleration and shrinking horizons. Zygmunt Bauman (Liquid Modernity, 2000) and Paul Virilio (Open Sky, 1997) capture this time from the perspective of the machine's lens and big data's gathering torrents. We were only just beginning to stockpile our algorithmic future. There is of course a strong human element to all of this as well, as domesticity was about to be transformed in ways not seen since the automation of white goods in the 1950s. Installing a telephone line in a new rental was a priority as this was not just a communication device but a gateway to a new digital epoch (chat rooms, conspiracy theories, gaming mods and a seemingly limitless archive of music). Australians, who would become the new suitors of the boom in computer peripherals and digital gadgetry, turned the latent ability to send short text messages from their mobile phones into a new form of digital dialectics. Meanwhile, the cinema was signalling a grave warning of what all of this might mean if we could indeed become virtual, if the machine was in fact alive and information networks consciousness itself. From James Bond confronting a Rupert Murdock/Conrad Black-type media demigod in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), to the digital psychedelics of the millennial rush in Strange Days (1995) to Henry Rollins raging against reality in the William Gibson penned Johnny Mnemonic (1995). These mid-nineties films tapped a rich vein of paranoia around the new vanguard of networked information and computer-generated image making while also expressing - in often garish terms - a deep anxiety about a not-to-distant future crackling into view beyond the millennial divide.

Mobile Social Networking Under Side-Channel Attacks: Practical Security Challenges

Mobile social networks (MSNs) are the networks of individuals with similar interests connected to each other through their mobile devices. Recently, MSNs are proliferating fast supported by emerging wireless technologies that allow to achieve more efficient communication and better networking performance across the key parameters, such as lower delay, higher data rate, and better coverage. At the same time, most of the MSN users do not fully recognize the importance of security on their handheld mobile devices. Due to this fact, multiple attacks aimed at capturing personal information and sensitive user data become a growing concern, fueled by the avalanche of new MSN applications and services. Therefore, the goal of this work is to understand whether the contemporary user equipment is susceptible to compromising its sensitive information to the attackers. As an example, various information security algorithms implemented in modern smartphones are thus tested to attempt the extraction of the said private data based on the traces registered with inexpensive contemporary audio cards. Our obtained results indicate that the sampling frequency, which constitutes the strongest limitation of the off-the-shelf side-channel attack equipment, only delivers low-informative traces. However, the success chances to recover sensitive data stored within a mobile device may increase significantly when utilizing more efficient analytical techniques as well as employing more complex attack equipment. Finally, we elaborate on the possible utilization of neural networks to improve the corresponding encrypted data extraction process, while the latter part of this paper outlines solutions and practical recommendations to protect from malicious side-channel attacks and keep the personal user information protected.

A digitally configurable measurement platform using audio cards for high-resolution electronic transport studies

We report on a software-defined digitally configurable measurement platform for determining electronic transport properties in nanostructures with small readout signals. By using a high-resolution audio analog-to-digital/digital-to-analog converter in a digitally compensated bridge configuration we significantly increase the measurement speed compared to established techniques and simultaneously acquire large and small signal characteristics. We characterize the performance (16 bit resolution, 100 dB dynamic range at 192 kS/s) and demonstrate the application of this measurement platform for studying the transport properties of spin-valve nanopillars, a two-terminal device that exhibits giant magnetoresistance and whose resistance can be switched between two levels by applied magnetic fields and by currents applied by the audio card. The high resolution and fast sampling capability permits rapid acquisition of deep statistics on the switching of a spin-valve nanopillar and reduces the time to acquire the basic properties of the device - a state-diagram showing the magnetic configurations as function of applied current and magnetic field - by orders of magnitude.

CNAQ: a MATLAB acquisition tool for computing transfer functions over audio cards

Since transfer function measurements require very precise buffer management, it is not easy to find any free and/or educational software which processes them with consumer audio cards, cheaper than professional ones but useful. Some people often use musical sequencers to generate and acquire signals but data can't be easily analyzed in other specific engineering codes because the lengths of the samples can't be easily fixed for example. Therefore, we decided to develop a specific software for general audio acoustic measurements with these main constraints: choose a programming language compatible with existing educational and professional tools, promote multi‐platform interpreted languages, be able to use consumer audio cards, publish the source code under the terms of a free software license. CNAQ provides a graphical interface under MATLAB to process sweep sine measurements for any kind of acoustical or electronic application in the audio range. The current features of the software and some development ideas, such as implementing convolution based Farina's method, will be also presented.

Multimodal virtual reality: Input‐output devices, system integration, and human factors

Virtual reality (VR) involves multimodal interactions with computer‐simulated worlds through visual, auditory, and haptic feedback. This article reviews the state of the art in special‐purpose input‐output devices, such as trackers, sensing gloves, 3‐D audio cards, stereo displays, and haptic feedback masters. The integration of these devices in local and network‐distributed VR simulation systems is subsequently discussed. Finally, we present human‐factor studies that quantify the benefits of several feedback modalities on simulation realism and sensorial immersion. Specifically, we consider tracking and dextrous manipulation task performance in terms of error rates and learning times when graphics, audio, and haptic feedback are provided.

The networked video jukebox

The availability of low-cost compression/decompression (codec) hardware for video and audio has given us the opportunity to provide multi-media applications over data networks. The paper describes a particular system that the authors have built to demonstrate this capability. A video jukebox has been built using off-the-shelf computers connected over Ethernet. For wide area connectivity, SMDS attachment has been used. Combined video and audio clips can be selectively played on a PC equipped with low cost video and audio codec cards, using JPEG and ADPCM compression hardware. The data for these clips is retrieved in real time from a Unix workstation via the network. Following a description of the system design, the performance obtainable from a number of network configurations is shown from the results of the experiments conducted. These results show that the addition of real-time transport software on top of the standard Internet protocols allows one to provide video and audio clips with a system comprising standard off-the-shelf equipment. The quality of these clips is considered acceptable for many applications. The authors have quantified the capacity of the system in terms of the data rates and the number of users, and have identified which parts of the total system become bottlenecks as each of these parameters is increased. Solutions to overcoming these bottlenecks are described. >
