Educational programs improvement directions of different levels in high school

The paper presents the results of research on the possibilities to improve the educational process at the university and the basic conditions of their realization. The authors developed the model of the next generation education program (EP) based on the analysis of the experience of “International Society for Engineering Pedagogy” and the CDIO. The paper presents data poll of young and experienced lecturers on need and importance of the next generation EP, as well as the readiness of their education departments and teachers to implement the next generation EP requirements in training bachelors and masters. Qualification characteristics of university lecturers, capable of solving problems of the next generation EP development and effective implementation; requirements for methodological tools for educational process monitoring; needs to raise the educational culture in order to form valuable attitude and responsibility of both lecturers and students for the results of their joint work are defined in the paper on the basis of empirical data. Generalization of results of the research allowed formulation of a number of actual tasks for education departments since their decision influences the quality of the ultimate results realized in the educational process.

Teaching and Learning Based on IR 4.0: Readiness of Attitude among Polytechnics Lecturers

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) not only changed the landscape of the industry sector, but also brought significant changes to the education sector, especially for higher education. These changes include changes in pedagogy, skills, and technology related to education. However, the question arises whether the lecturers at Higher Education Institutions, such as polytechnics, are ready to apply IR 4.0 elements in their teaching process. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the level of readiness of polytechnic lecturers towards teaching and learning process based on IR 4.0 from attitudes aspects and to study the gender differences in the measured aspect. Survey technique was used as the research design in which 222 lecturers from three polytechnics in the State of Johor were chosen as respondents for the study. A set of questionnaire was used to obtain survey data from respondents. The gathered date were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings show that the readiness of lecturers in the aspect of attitudes is at a moderate level. In addition, the findings also reveal that there is a significant difference in attitude readiness between male lecturers and female lecturers. In conclusion, the responsible party should take appropriate action to improve the attitude of polytechnic lecturers so that they are better prepared to apply the IR 4.0 elements in the teaching process and subsequently produce quality graduates and meet the needs of the industry.

The Tension and Synergy of Ethical Sources in The Relations of Lecturers and Students in Indonesian Universities

Higher education is expected to be a place to nurture youth or young generation who is strong, devoted to God and able to work for humanity. However, this highly trusted institution still faces ambiguous ethical issues that are shown by the mental attitude and behaviour of lecturers and students, such as plagiarism, sexual harassment and other immoral acts. Various incidents of ethical violations can be found in private and public universities, which are affiliated with certain religions or not. This research investigates the source of ethical considerations which underlie the relationship between lecturers and students in realizing their spirit and dignity as academic community. This research was conducted in four cities, namely Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Surabaya and Ruteng, using a qualitative approach, with the interview method and FGD to gather information. The ethical framework theory of Ibn Miskawayh and Immanuel Kant is used to analyze the data found. The results showed a variety of ethical sources referred by lecturers and students in carrying out their participation in higher education; the most widely referred sources are informants from religion, culture and objective rationality. The data also shows the existence of this ethical reference contestation, for example in the case of violations of sexual ethics, the male and the lecturers are more advantageous than students and women because cultural ethics is more in favour of men. Although all universities studied have a professional code of ethics, the ethical integrity of individual lecturers and students is no less important to be strengthened.

Attitude of Lecturers to the Use of Digital Education Tools in Achieving Teaching and Learning Objectives in Umar Musa Yaradua University Katsina

This study was conducted at Umar Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina State. The overpopulation, overstretched teaching staffs, ICT abusive learners and insufficient attainment of lesson objective mechanisms, call for the adoption of DETs. The study adopts descriptive survey type of research using a structured questionnaire titled “Lecturers’ Usage of Digital Educational Tools Questionnaire (LUDETOQ)”, that was validated at Cronbach's Alpha 0.73. The result of the test (0.73) suggests a reliable estimate of the level of internal consistency of the information contained in the responses gathered from the questionnaire. The results showed that lecturers are aware about the digital educational tools which could be used for the attainment of teaching and learning goals and could tell vividly what it could be used for. However, some are sceptical in its ability to be used for assignment and revision purposes. This study revealed that lecturer’s difficulty/dislike in keeping up with changes with technology and lack of knowledge and competencies of how to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning activity are the main barriers to the digital educational tools use among lecturers. The research recommends that School Management should via a bulletin, mandate/instruct lecturers to regularly engage with students through the selected DETs.

Pengaruh Karakter Serta Keprofesionalan Dosen dalam Proses Perkuliahan Guna Menjadikan Mahasiswa yang Cerdas dan Kritis

Lectures are attended by students and lecturers as facilitators. The success or failure of the lecture process can be measured by the ability of students, both their intellectual abilities and other abilities. The increase of students 'intellectual ability in their fields other than by doing individual learning such as diligent reading and others, the attitude and professionalism of lecturers who teach them is also very influential on students' intellectual development, such as having a teaching strategy that can give students an incentive to think critically and others. However, even though students have high intelligence, the lecturers who teach are not professional, so the lecture process will not last maximally even though the lecturer is only a facilitator.

Knowledge, beliefs, and influences associated with complementary and alternative medicine among physiotherapy and counselling students.

The objective of this study is to determine whether physiotherapy and counselling students, who represent a future generation of two health professions, have differing views about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In order to determine physiotherapy and counselling students' self-rated knowledge and beliefs about CAM and the factors which influence that understanding, a modified 10-item CAM Health Belief Questionnaire was administered across all year groups to physiotherapy students and counselling students at two universities in Perth, Western Australia. The self-rated paper-based survey measured knowledge of CAM among physiotherapy and counselling students, evaluation of their beliefs regarding the use of CAM, factors that influence their knowledge and beliefs, and their likelihood of recommending CAM to future patients. A response rate of 96.8% was achieved, with 387 physiotherapy students and 88 counselling students. Moderately positive beliefs about CAM were confirmed in both groups, with mean scores of 42.8/70 for physiotherapy students and 43.3/70 for counselling students. There were no significant differences between the student groups in overall self-rated knowledge of CAM. The main factors that influenced the students' responses were personal experience for counselling students and scientific evidence for physiotherapy students. Other factors included university training, attitudes of lecturers, tutors and fellow students, cultural background, and opinions of external practitioners. Counselling students were more likely than physiotherapy students to recommend CAM therapies to their future patients. The results from this study demonstrate minimal self-rated knowledge but moderately positive attitudes towards CAM by both physiotherapy and counselling students.

SIKAP DOSEN TERHADAP PEMBELAJARAN INTERPROFESIONAL EDUCATION (IPE) STUDI PADA DOSEN DI STIKES JENDERAL ACHMAD YANI YOGYAKARTA

Background: Application of IPE in academics prioritizes collaborative competencies to make students able to understand how to work interprofessionally, so as to foster readiness. Lecturer attitudes are considered as an important component in implementing successful IPE in academic environment.
 Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine and analyse lecturers attitudes towards interprofessional education.
 Method: This was descriptive comparative study with cross sectional design. Sampel were 31 lecturers from departments of nursing, midwifery, and medical record taken by purposive sampling. Modified questioner of Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Health Care Teams (ATHCT), Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS), and Attitudes Towards Interprofessional Learning in Academic Setting (ATILAS) were applied to examine lecturers attitudes.
 Result: The results indicate lecturer's positive attitude toward IPE, with an average score of statement item M = 3.96 on the attitude aspect to the interprofessional health care teams; M = 4.11 on attitude aspect to interprofessional education; as well as on attitudes towards interprofessional learning in academic setting with M = 3,93. Discipline, gender, and teaching experience have no significant relationship with overall attitudinal responses towards IPE.
 Conclusions: These findings can be used as a consideration of the intitution in applying Interprofessional Education at the academic settings.

Intercultural Communicative Competence in ELT: Lecturers’ Perception and Practice

“One of its obvious results is the emergence of intercultural communication and English language has then become as a bridge for cross-cultural communication, thanks to its worldwide lingua franca. For these reasons, Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) should be more concerned in English Language Teaching (ELT) tertiary contexts. This study aims to gain an indepth understanding on this issue by investigating English teachers' perceptions and practices on ICC in ELT . The study uses a mixed method, to find the perspective of the lecturers, the researcher use questionnaire and interview, while for the practice the reseracher use observation. The findings of the study reveal the positive attitudes of English lecturers on ICC in ELT, but certain challenges confronted by their implementations have been highlighted. As a result, some possible measures to enhance ICC engagement in ELT in this context are proposed.”

The concept of Positive Health for students/lecturers in the Netherlands

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The future healthcare workforce are expected to serve as role models given that their roles cover patient education concerning positive health behavior. In light of the changes in healthcare, towards patient centered care and positive health, the need to encourage students of health sciences to adopt the concept of positive health will be necessary.Aim: To explore the attitudes of lecturers and students of health to the new concept of Positive Health, using the 6 domains, in Dutch health education systems with different health care professionals.Methods: A cross-sectional study comparing the perception towards health in students and lecturers of the health department of an Applied University in the Netherlands with the data of patients and other stakeholders.Results: Students scored aspects of social participation, mental functioning and daily functioning as less important compared to patients. Lecturers scored the aspects of bodily functions and daily functioning less important compared to patients.Conclusion: These differences in scores should be addressed in educational programs of health professionals because all aspects of health are important to the patient’s experienced health.

Science teacher educator and authentic assessment: Attitude toward NoS and its assessment in science instruction

The focus of this study is mainly to the involvement of strategic lecturers in five universities in Indonesia that graduate science teachers, as there is relationship between attitude and competency with one’s experience in the process of constructing and implementing competency of authentic assessment in science learning and supervising prospective teachers during teaching practice at schools. A number of 63 lecturers in three courses (evaluation, practical works, teaching practice) participated in this study. Data were collected through questionnaire and from lesson plans. Research results show that their attitude toward assessment is good (3.92), also the factors supporting the effectiveness of authentic assessment (3.77), and very good for the objective of the authentic assessment (4.30). It was also found that level of respondent attitude towards “assessment based on each aspects” varied from transitional and close to constructivist for the four aspects. A number of patterns was found that relate assessment and instruction components. from the interview it was found that the lecturers for the two courses (evaluation, practical works) are sure that they have done the assessment properly even though they do not know the relationship, but no clear result about the attitude of lecturers for teaching practice due to the limited number of supervisor with science background who supervise students for KKN at the same time.

Stavovi univerzitetskih predavača prema studentskoj evaluaciji nastavnog procesa

The objective of the paper was to examine the attitudes of university lecturers towards evaluation of the teaching process by students. In addition, we were interested in whether there is an effect of an academic title (assistant, assistant professor, associate, and full professor) or years of work experience on the nature of that attitude. In order to investigate this, we constructed a scale of attitudes. The scale was separated in three dimensions: Invariability of student's role, Indication of the limitations of evaluation, and Student incompetence in evaluation. The survey was conducted on a total of 287 university lecturers. The results showed that lecturers have a moderate to slightly positive attitude towards the evaluation on all three dimensions. Additionally, the lecturers with more years of experience exhibited a more negative attitude on the dimension of Invariability of student role in relation to the lecturers with less than 5 years of work experience. There were no differences between teaching assistants and senior lecturers (assistant, associate, and full professors) in the attitude about the evaluation of the teaching process by students. The results obtained in this way are in unison with the results of previous research and suggest that on the one hand, lecturers see positive aspects of evaluation in the form of active involvement of students in the teaching process, but on the other hand there is no confidence in the evaluation (negative side of evaluation) and the objectivity of the evaluation process itself.

Awareness, knowledge and attitude of lecturers towards institutional repositories in university libraries in Nigeria

PurposeContent recruitment is a very crucial aspect of institutional repository (IR), and yet, a major challenge in the implementation of an IR system. Literature highlighted the numerous issues associated with IR implementation in the Sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, and the necessity to review and tackle the divergent challenges of institutional repositories. This study aims to address the issues of awareness, knowledge and attitude of lecturers towards institutional repositories in university libraries in Nigeria.Design/methodologyThe study adopted the descriptive survey research design. A multistage sampling procedure was used to sample 751 lecturers of the universities in Nigeria and eight heads of the digitization section of the libraries. Data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics.FindingsThe findings revealed that majority of the lecturers in Nigeria are either unfamiliar with the term IR or have very little level of knowledge on the aims and objectives of IR, and therefore have low disposition to submitting their work. The study identified various options to resolve the problem of awareness, knowledge and pessimistic attitude of lecturers towards IRs, including massive awareness and enlightenment programmes on the subject of IR and on copyright issues within the university communities in Nigeria.OriginalityThe study will enhance the awareness and advocacy of IR in Nigeria. The awareness and knowledge of IR will bring about positive attitudinal change of lecturers towards investing into IRs.

Ecuadorian universities towards intercultural education: Attitude of lecturers in Guayaquil


 
 
 This research analyses the university lecturers’ attitude about intercultural education. The study was carried out in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, where university classrooms are multicultural spaces due to the confluence of students from different ethnic groups as well as national and international migrants. The ‘Scale of attitudes toward multicultural education’ was adapted to the Ecuadorian context and applied to 167 university lecturers. For conducting the survey, the snowball technique was selected, and the questionnaire was distributed via email. The reliability assessment showed an internal consistency index of 0.88. The results show a subjects’ favourable attitude towards intercultural education; however, there still exist a small group of lecturers slightly leaning towards the rejection of intercultural education.

Exploring lecturer engagement with the VLE: findings from a multi-college staff survey

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are important infrastructure and digital educational spaces that are widely used. The lecturers’ voices on VLEs and their use were not adequately captured in the #VLEIreland project. Therefore, following the development and piloting of a questionnaire consisting of a common set of questions, lecturers were surveyed across seven Irish higher education institutes. There were 580 responses from staff who use the VLE, with the analysis based upon the 521 valid responses. The findings will explore the VLE features or tools used by lecturers, their attitude to the VLE, and barriers to the use of the VLE and related issues, including that of intellectual property ownership. Lecturers are broadly positive about VLEs, with 7 in 10 of those who use the VLE strongly agreeing that it is helpful. However the adoption and use of VLEs is not without difficulties. In particular, time pressures emerged as barriers to use, limiting the use of VLEs and engagement with training. Despite this, 91% of respondents answered Yes to the question “Are you interested in making more use of online tools in your teaching?” Drawing on the issues highlighted in the findings, this paper will explore the attitudes of lecturers to the VLE and the enablers of, and inhibitors to, their greater engagement with the VLE.

The role and potential of social networks sites in tertiary education

Purpose of the paper : Social Networks Sites (SNSs) are becoming very popular among students and constitute a promising field for tertiary education evolution. This research aims at assessing the usage of social networks for educational aims and at evaluating the perception of university students towards this kind of usage. Methodology : Methodologically, the paper rests on an extensive, comprehensive and comparative theoretical research on the subject, as well as on primary research involving the in-depth survey of 125 university students in Northern Italy. Findings : The findings underline the importance of utilizing SNSs to improve educational communications, sharing of information, student-student and student-educator interaction, efficiency, polyphony and more. The research also stressed the need for SNS adoption to be specific and in accordance with both student and lecturer attitudes, competences and limitations, as well other therein specified stakeholders and added values. Research limitations : this is an exploratory study based on a sample of moderately limited size and, although generically valuable, it focuses specifically on Northern Italy. Implications : the present research, in addition to its practical applications, may be extended to the academic faculty and to an analysis, based on a wider sample, of the underlying motivators that inhibit students and faculty from adopting SNSs for educational purposes. Originality/Value of the paper : although literature on SNSs in education does exist, studies on university students’ attitude towards SNSs are scarce and contrasting. This research sheds light on this still underexplored, yet increasingly important subject by descriptively aiding the comprehension of SNSs for educational purposes, while prescriptively indicating advisable courses of actio n.

Development of Mobile-Interfaced Machine Learning-Based Predictive Models for Improving Students’ Performance in Programming Courses

Student performance modelling (SPM) is a critical step to assessing and improving students performances in their learning discourse. However, most existing SPM are based on statistical approaches, which on one hand are based on probability, depicting that results are based on estimation; and on the other hand, actual influences of hidden factors that are peculiar to students, lecturers, learning environment and the family, together with their overall effect on student performance have not been exhaustively investigated. In this paper, Student Performance Models (SPM) for improving students performance in programming courses were developed using M5P Decision Tree (MDT) and Linear Regression Classifier (LRC). The data used was gathered using a structured questionnaire from 295 students in 200 and 300 levels of study who offered Web programming, C or JAVA at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria between 2012 and 2016. Hidden factors that are significant to students performance in programming were identified. The relevant data gathered, normalized, coded and prepared as variable and factor datasets, and fed into the MDT algorithm and LRC to develop the predictive models. The evaluation results obtained indicate that the variable-based LRC produced the best model in terms of MAE, RMSE, RAE and the RRSE having yielded the least values in all the evaluations conducted. Further results obtained established the strong significance of attitude of students and lecturers, fearful perception of students, erratic power supply, university facilities, student health and students attendance to the performance of students in programming courses. The variable-based LRC model presented in this paper could provide baseline information about students performance thereby offering better decision making towards improving teaching/learning outcomes in programming courses.

Exploring Curriculum Innovation as a Tool Towards Attainment of Self Reliance of NCE Graduates of Islamic Studies

Islamic Studies is offered from the primary level of education to the tertiary level of education in Nigeria and have contributed a lot to the development of knowledge in the world by producing great scholars in various fields of knowledge such as Al kindi, Ibn khaldun, and Al-Ghazali, Al-Razi, to mention but a few. Islamic education was the first to introduce a formal, organized and certificated education which provided job opportunities as its products were equipped with skills needed in the management of various affairs of man. In recent time graduates of Islamic Studies are becoming irrelevant in the knowledge economy and finding it difficult to attain self reliance. This paper examines the factors that is hindering Islamic Studies graduates from attaining self reliance and which includes irrelevance curriculum content, low enrolment, inadequate teaching and learning materials, lack of skill development in the application of information and communication in technology, admission criteria, methods of delivery, lack of proper funding, poor attitudes of lecturers to research among others. This study is literature survey and data is presented based on direct deductions from the available documents. The study reveals that the present Islamic Studies curriculum content is inadequate to enhance the attainment of self reliance among Islamic Studies graduates. The study recommends the need for curriculum innovation in Islamic Studies by integrating sciences, and vocational courses that can enhance the attainment of self reliance among graduates of Islamic Studies.

The Attitude of Economic Students and Lecturers toward Economic English Material Based on Shariah Economy System

This research aimed to investigate Economic students and lecturers’ attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system. The material was the new material design that combined economic English in general and shariah economy concept in a teaching and learning material. This research is survey research. It was held at Economy Faculty of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University Baubau Indonesia in 2015/2016 academic year. This research was limited to analyze both Economic students and lecturers’ attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system. The Participants of the study were 100 Economic students and 20 Economic lecturers. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. All participants were invited to respond to questionnaires. And they then participated in follow-up interviews. The results of the study showed that the main score of students’ attitude was 42.24 and lecturers’ attitude was 41.50. From the main above indicated that both Economic students and lecturers had positive attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system.

Investigating Arabic to Speakers of Other Languages (ASOL) Lecturers’ Attitudes towards Utilizing Flipped Classroom Instruction (FCI): A Qualitative Study at Jordanian Public Universities

Although Flipped Classroom Instruction (FCI) is not a new concept, the practice is relatively new in the Arab region, especially, in Jordan, where the face-to face approach is still widely used. This qualitative study examined the attitudes of Arabic language lecturers at three Jordanian public universities towards utilizing FCI in their instruction. With the help of convenience sampling, eight lecturers were selected to participate in the study. To reach a clear understanding of this issue, the study utilized a qualitative design and semi-structured interviews were used as a tool to collect the data. The findings revealed that the attitudes of ASOL lecturers about using FCI in their instruction were generally positive. Through the analysis of the data, three main themes emerged from the interviews. The themes were: 1) increasing interaction and collaborative learning, 2) encouraging learning autonomy and independence, and 3) peer instruction and feedback. A key recommendation of the study is that further research needs to be conducted into the reasons why some teachers had negative attitudes towards FCI.
