ADHD Symptoms in Childhood and Big Five Personality Traits in Adolescence: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study in Girls.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental condition characterized by developmentally extreme and impairing symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Great interest has emerged in the ways ADHD and its underlying symptom dimensions relate to the development of personality traits. Much extant research on this topic is cross-sectional, relying on self-report measures and male samples. Herein, we present data from a prospective, longitudinal study of a socioeconomically and racially diverse sample of girls, including those with ADHD and a matched neurotypical comparison sample. We examined how parent- and teacher-reported ADHD in middle childhood relate to self-reported Big Five personality traits in adolescence. As expected, childhood ADHD diagnosis prospectively predicted lower self-reported Conscientiousness, lower Agreeableness, and higher Neuroticism in adolescence. With ADHD diagnosis covaried, Inattention (IA) predicted only low Conscientiousness, Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (HI) predicted only low Agreeableness, and neither predicted adolescent Neuroticism. An exploratory moderator analysis showed that family income moderated the effects of IA and HI on the negativity of adolescent self-descriptions of their own personalities, with more pronounced negative effects for girls in families with higher (rather than lower) income. Familial pressures to achieve in higher-income families may be linked to more pronounced negative ramifications of ADHD on personality development.

Screen time and effects on attention deficient hyperactivity disorder in children - A systematic review

In recent years, screen time exposure and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom interrelations in children have garnered increasing attention. Understanding the screen time’s impact on ADHD has become crucial due to its potential influence on socialization, neurobehavioral development, and the prevalence of ADHD among pediatric populations. Conforming to the guidelines of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, a systematic examination was undertaken, centering on research investigating the correlation between screen time and ADHD symptoms in children. The search encompassed databases including MEDLINE (through PubMed), ScienceDirect, Wiley online library, PsycINFO, ERIC, JSTOR, and PsycArticles, utilizing descriptors such as “screen time” and “attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.” The initial search yielded 2480 articles, supplemented by an additional 10 articles from reference searches, resulting in a total of 2480 records. Excluding the duplicates, 1590 articles were screened based on abstracts, of which 130 underwent full-text examination. Ultimately, 15 studies included in this review met the inclusion criteria. These studies, conducted between 2013 and 2023, comprised cross-sectional, longitudinal, and interventional designs, presenting varying associations between screen time and ADHD symptoms across different age groups. The findings from the selected studies depict a complex relationship between screen time exposure and ADHD symptoms in children. While some studies highlight significant correlations between increased screen exposure and ADHD symptoms, others present conflicting results, indicating the need for further research. Understanding these nuances is crucial in formulating targeted interventions and delineating clearer guidelines to manage screen time concerning ADHD in children.

Effects of an online mindfulness-based program for parents of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a pilot, mixed methods study.

Online mindfulness-based program (MBP) for parents and families especially in clinical population is limited. Engagement and significant dropout are major issues in MBP implementation. This pilot study examined the effects of an online mindfulness-based program (MBP) on parents of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A mixed methods study was applied to evaluate the effects of the MBP. A total of 43 parents were recruited and were randomly assigned into intervention group and waitlist control group. The online MBP lasted for 28 days, including 20 psychoeducation videos, homework audio guidance, and four instructor-led online group meetings. Purposive sampling was used to recruit parents who completed the program to share their experiences and suggestions for improving the program in semi-structured online interviews. Quantitative data showed that participants from the online MBP reported a medium to large effect on the reduction of child ADHD symptoms. In semi-structured interviews, participants reported positive experiences in their help seeking intention, and personal changes, such as emotion regulation and quality attention to their children. Participants further made suggestions for improvement. The effect of online MBP is promising, and the program should be conducted. A large scale randomized controlled trial should be conducted to investigate the effects of MBP in clinical populations. ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05480423.

Cross Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale-5 (Parent Version) into Bangla

Introduction: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents. Reliable and culturally appropriate assessment tools are crucial for accurate diagnosis and management. This study aimed to adapt and validate the ADHD Rating Scale-5 (Parent Version) into Bangla, assessing its psychometric properties in a Bangladeshi context. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 participants from urban areas and nuclear families. The scale underwent a rigorous translation and cultural adaptation process, following a six-step methodological approach. The study evaluated the scale's internal consistency, content validity, and construct validity through Cronbach's alpha, Content Validity Index (CVI), and factor analysis, respectively. Result: The ADHD-RS-5 Bangla Parent Version demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89) and good reliability in the Inattention (alpha = 0.858) and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity (alpha = 0.818) subdomains. Content validity was confirmed with high Item-CVI scores and a Scale-level CVI of 0.962. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the two-factor structure of the scale, and exploratory factor analysis identified three components, explaining 71.1% of the variance. Conclusion: The ADHD-RS-5 Bangla Parent Version is a reliable and valid tool for assessing ADHD symptoms in Bangla-speaking children. Its strong psychometric properties make it suitable for clinical and research use in Bangladesh. This study contributes to the development of culturally sensitive assessment tools for ADHD, enhancing the understanding and management of the disorder in diverse populations.

Children's emotional reactivity and negative affect predict future ADHD symptom severity beyond initial ADHD symptom severity.

Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience significant emotion dysregulation. However, there is limited longitudinal data on associations between multiple aspects of emotion dysregulation and ADHD symptoms. Additionally, given substantial evidence that increased levels and variability of negative affect (NA) are identified in children with ADHD, it is important to examine the role of NA in this relationship. The present study used momentary and longitudinal data to examine the relation between two aspects of emotion dysregulation (emotional lability and emotional reactivity), the two ADHD symptom clusters separately (inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive), total ADHD symptom severity, and NA variability over a period of six months. Participants (N = 68) were parents of children aged 7-12years old (M = 9.80, SD = 1.34) who completed baseline and 6-month follow-up reports of children's ADHD symptoms and emotion dysregulation as well as ecological momentary assessments (EMA) of their children's NA for one week. Results were threefold: (1) children's emotional reactivity predicted inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, and total ADHD symptom severity above and beyond initial ADHD symptom severity, but emotional lability did not significantly predict severity of any ADHD symptom cluster; (2) NA variability predicted hyperactive/impulsive and total ADHD symptom severity, but not inattentive severity; and (3) initial ADHD symptom severity did not predict emotion dysregulation at follow-up. The current study provides novel insight regarding the longitudinal influence of specific aspects of emotion dysregulation and NA on ADHD symptom severity in children and suggests that targeting emotional reactivity could minimize ADHD symptom severity.

Early childhood exposure to environmental phenols and parabens, phthalates, organophosphate pesticides, and trace elements in association with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in the CHARGE study.

A growing body of literature investigated childhood exposure to environmental chemicals in association with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, but limited studies considered urinary mixtures of multiple chemical classes. This study examined associations of concurrent exposure to non-persistent chemicals with ADHD symptoms in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental delay (DD), and typical development (TD). A total of 549 children aged 2-5 years from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) case-control study were administered the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). This study focused on the ADHD/noncompliance subscale and its two subdomains (hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention). Sixty-two chemicals from four classes (phenols/parabens, phthalates, organophosphate pesticides, trace elements) were quantified in child urine samples, and 43 chemicals detected in > 70% samples were used to investigate their associations with ADHD symptoms. Negative binomial regression was used for single-chemical analysis, and weighted quantile sum regression with repeated holdout validation was applied for mixture analysis for each chemical class and all chemicals. The mixture analyses were further stratified by diagnostic group. Aphthalate metabolite mixturewas associated with higher ADHD/noncompliance scores (median count ratio [CR] = 1.10; 2.5th, 97.5th percentile: 1.00, 1.21), especially hyperactivity/impulsivity (median CR = 1.09; 2.5th, 97.5th percentile: 1.00, 1.25). The possible contributors to these mixture effects were di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolites and mono-2-heptyl phthalate (MHPP). These associations were likely driven by children with ASD as these were observed among children with ASD, but not among TD or those with DD. Additionally, among children with ASD, a mixture of all chemicals was associated with ADHD/noncompliance and hyperactivity/impulsivity, and possible contributors were 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid, DEHP metabolites, MHPP, mono-n-butyl phthalate, and cadmium. Early childhood exposure to aphthalate mixture was associated with ADHD symptoms, particularly among children with ASD. While the diverse diagnostic profiles limited generalizability, our findings suggest a potential link between phthalate exposure and the comorbidity of ASD and ADHD.

The Impact of Children's and Parents' Perceptions of Parenting Styles on Attention, Hyperactivity, Anxiety, and Emotional Regulation.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptomatology can be studied by examining the associated neurobiological factors or by looking at the environmental factors involved, such as parenting styles. Negative parenting styles have been associated with ADHD symptoms in childhood and adolescence. The present study aimed to analyze the predictive power of two parenting style dimensions (warmth-communication and criticism-rejection) and three factors about rule-setting and compliance (inductive, strict, and indulgent styles) in the explanation of ADHD symptoms (attention and hyperactivity) and associated emotional factors (anxiety and emotional regulation) considering parents' and children's perspectives. The results indicate that from the parents' perspective, the criticism-rejection variable was the most important in explaining attention difficulties, anxiety and emotional regulation. From the children's perspective, the strict parenting style was the most important variable in explaining hyperactivity and emotional regulation. In addition, for children, warmth-communication was significant in predicting fewer emotional regulation difficulties. Our results highlight the importance of considering family dynamics when assessing ADHD in order to implement comprehensive interventions that consider parental training in positive parenting styles.

The Efficacy of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for Youth with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Meta-Analysis.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent in early childhood and has long-term negative effects when left untreated. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an early intervention for children aged 2- to-7-years that has extensive evidence for treating child externalizing problems by teaching parents effective strategies to manage child behavior. However, the effect of PCIT for families with children diagnosed with ADHD is not completely understood. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize research on the use of PCIT for children with ADHD. Nine out of 711 identified studies were analyzed. Summary effect sizes were calculated using the standardized mean gain for child ADHD symptoms, child behaviors, parent stress, and parenting behaviors, and the Fail-Safe N was calculated to determine the robustness of the results. Overall, PCIT had a significant beneficial effect on child ADHD symptoms (g = 0.90), child behavior (g = 0.44), parent stress (g = 0.82), and parenting behaviors (g = 2.15). Results of this meta-analysis suggest that PCIT is an effective treatment for reducing core symptoms of ADHD.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation Improves Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Children

Background: Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neuropsychiatric disorders in children. Increasing evidence suggests an association between omega-3 fatty acid and ADHD. We aimed to investigate the effects of 6-month omega- 3 fatty acid supplementation on the fatty-acid profile of erythrocytes and on the clinical severity of ADHD symptoms in children. Methods: Recruitment included 32 children aged 6-14 years diagnosed with ADHD at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Ziv Medical Center, Israel. Intervention included refrigerated omega-3 fatty acid supplementation normalized to body weight. Blood samples were taken at baseline, 3 and 6 months after intervention for quantification of fatty acids from erythrocyte membranes. ADHD symptoms were assessed by parents and teachers according to the ADHD Rating-Scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. ADHD severity was additionally assessed by a psychiatrist according to the Clinical Global Impressions Scale. Results: Supplementation of omega-3 fatty acid in children with ADHD raised their omega-3 index statistically significantly from an average of 4.4% omega-3 index at baseline to 11.6% after 6 months and had beneficial effects on ADHD symptoms, as measured by validated questionnaires and in accordance with a pediatric psychiatrist examination. Conclusion: Our pilot study showed that dietary supplementation of omega-3 fatty acid increased the blood omega-3 index levels and improved ADHD symptoms even at the midpoint of 3 months.

Child hyperactivity, mother-child negativity, and sibling dyad negativity: A transactional family systems approach.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common mental disorders in children and adolescents. While most studies in this field have focused on the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder, research focusing on the family environment as a critical context contributing toward the manifestation and maintenance of child ADHD symptoms is still less extensive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine longitudinal and bidirectional associations between child hyperactivity, mother-child negativity, and sibling dyad negativity. Data were analyzed of up to 4,429 children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a nationally representative prospective birth cohort study in the United Kingdom, at three time points (T1-T3, children aged 4, 7, and 8 years). At baseline (T1, n = 4,063), the child sample (98.8% White ethnic background) composed of 51.6% males. Child hyperactivity symptoms, mother-child negativity, and sibling dyad negativity were examined based on maternal reports. The random intercepts cross-lagged panel model was adopted to parcel out between-family differences from within-family fluctuations and test bidirectional associations. On the between-family level, families with higher child hyperactivity reported higher mother-child and sibling dyad negativity. On the within-family level, unidirectional spillover processes between sibling dyad negativity and mother-child negativity as well as between mother-child negativity and child hyperactivity emerged. Future work in the area of child hyperactivity should implement a transactional family systems approach incorporating both parent-child and sibling subsystems. Interventions to reduce negative interactions between parents and hyperactive children may offer promising improvements in child symptoms and thus alleviate family burden. Phosphatidylserine enriched with polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acid supplementation for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents with epilepsy: Arandomized placebo-controlled trial.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequent comorbidity in children with epilepsy, which management mostly relies on the usual treatments of ADHD, especially methylphenidate. Supplementation with polyunsaturated n-3 Fatty Acid (PUFA) has been proposed as an alternative therapeutic approach in ADHD without epilepsy but has never been evaluated in epilepsy-associated ADHD. A multicenter double blind randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluating supplementation with PUFA, in eicosapentaenoic- and docosahexaenoic-acid form, conjugated to a phospholipid vector (PS-Omega3) in children aged >6 and <16-years old, and suffering from any type of epilepsy and ADHD (inattentive or combined type) according to DSM-V. After a 4-week baseline period, patients were allocated (1:1) either to placebo group or to PS-Omega 3 group and entered a 12 week-double-blind treatment period which was followed by a 12 week-open-label treatment period. The primary outcome was the reduction of the ADHD-rating scale IV attention-deficit subscore after 12 weeks of treatment. The study was stopped early because of lack of eligible participants and the expected sample size was not reached. Seventy-four patients were randomized, 44 in PS-Omega3, and 30 in the placebo group. The reduction after 12 weeks of treatment in the inattention subscore of the ADHD-IV scale was -1.57 in the PS-Omega3 group, and -2.90 in the placebo group (p = 0.33, α = 5%). Results were similar after 24 weeks of treatment and for all other ADHD-related secondary outcomes, with no difference between placebo and PS-Omega3. Our study remaining underpowered, no formal conclusion about the effect of Ps-Omega3 could be drawn. However, our data strongly suggested that the PS-Omega 3 formulation used in the current study did not improve ADHD symptoms in children with epilepsy. Supplementation with polyunsaturated n-3 Fatty Acid (PUFA) has been proposed in ADHD but has never been evaluated in patients with both epilepsy and ADHD. To address this issue, we conducted a multicenter double blind randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluating supplementation with PUFA in children with epilepsy and ADHD. The study was stopped early because of lack of eligible participants, hampering formal conclusion. However, the evolution of the ADHD symptoms at 12 and 24 weeks did not differ between placebo and PUFA supplementation, strongly suggesting that PUFA did not improve ADHD symptoms in children with epilepsy.

Maternal Obesity and ADHD: An Original Review of Evidence and Potential Mechanisms

This review explores the potential link between maternal obesity [body mass index (BMI) &gt;30 during pregnancy] and the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring. This study assesses the strength of this association by examining epidemiological studies and investigating possible biological mechanisms, including inflammation, oxidative stress, hormonal changes, prenatal programing, and epigenetic modifications. In addition, the review considers moderating variables and discusses the public health implications, with the objective of providing valuable insights into addressing this complex relationship for future clinical approaches and public health policies. This original review conducted a comprehensive literature search in August 2023 using various databases and keywords related to maternal obesity and ADHD. English articles published from 2005 to 2023, including case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, and reviews were considered. Multiple authors independently conducted searches, screened titles/abstracts, and extracted data to ensure rigorous methodology. Initially, 414 articles were retrieved from various databases and managed using Zotero. After eliminating 96 duplicates, 318 articles remained for screening on Rayyan. Of these, 47 papers met the eligibility criteria and underwent full-text review for inclusion in the study. Multiple studies suggest a positive correlation between maternal obesity and ADHD symptoms in children. Additionally, maternal obesity is associated with other neurodevelopmental disorders and behaviors in offspring, including heightened motor and anxiety behaviors. The complex relationship between maternal obesity and ADHD necessitates further investigation. Although existing research indicates associations, causality remains unconfirmed. Genome-wide association studies reveal shared genetic pathways, supported by rodent models. Human studies must address confounding factors. Promising interventions exist but require validation. Comprehensive research encompassing genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors is crucial for understanding the full impact of maternal obesity on neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Profiling Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Traits in Children with SYNGAP1-Related Intellectual Disability.

SYNGAP1-related ID is a genetic condition characterised by global developmental delay and epilepsy. Individuals with SYNGAP1-related ID also commonly show differences in attention and social communication/interaction and frequently receive additional diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We thus set out to quantify ASD and ADHD symptoms in children with this syndrome. To assess ASD and ADHD, parents and caregivers of a child with SYNGAP1-related ID (N = 34) or a typically developing control (N = 21) completed the Social Responsiveness Scale-2, the Social Communication Questionnaire with a subset of these also completing the Conners-3. We found that those with SYNGAP1-related ID demonstrated higher levels of autistic traits on both the SRS and SCQ than typically developing controls. On the SRS, those with SYNGAP1-related ID scored highest for restricted repetitive behaviours, and were least impaired in social awareness. On the Conners-3, those with SYNGAP1-related ID also showed a high prevalence of ADHD traits, with scores demonstrating difficulties with peer relations but relatively low occurrence of symptoms for DSM-5 conduct disorder and DSM-5 oppositional defiant disorder. Hierarchical clustering analysis highlighted distinct SYNGAP1-related ID subgroups for both ASD and ADHD traits. These findings provide further characterisation of the SYNGAP1-related ID behavioural phenotype, guiding diagnosis, assessment and potential interventions.

Utilizing artificial intelligence-based eye tracking technology for screening ADHD symptoms in children.

To explore the potential of using artificial intelligence (AI)-based eye tracking technology on a tablet for screening Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children. We recruited 112 children diagnosed with ADHD (ADHD group; mean age: 9.40 ± 1.70 years old) and 325 typically developing children (TD group; mean age: 9.45 ± 1.59 years old). We designed a data-driven end-to-end convolutional neural network appearance-based model to predict eye gaze to permit eye-tracking under low resolution and sampling rates. The participants then completed the eye tracking task on a tablet, which consisted of a simple fixation task as well as 14 prosaccade (looking toward target) and 14 antisaccade (looking away from target) trials, measuring attention and inhibition, respectively. Two-way MANOVA analyses demonstrated that diagnosis and age had significant effects on performance on the fixation task [diagnosis: F(2, 432) = 8.231, ***p < 0.001; Wilks' Λ = 0.963; age: F(2, 432) = 3.999, *p < 0.019; Wilks' Λ = 0.982], prosaccade task [age: F(16, 418) = 3.847, ***p < 0.001; Wilks' Λ = 0.872], and antisaccade task [diagnosis: F(16, 418) = 1.738, *p = 0.038; Wilks' Λ = 0.938; age: F(16, 418) = 4.508, ***p < 0.001; Wilks' Λ = 0.853]. Correlational analyses revealed that participants with higher SNAP-IV score were more likely to have shorter fixation duration and more fixation intervals (r = -0.160, 95% CI [0.250, 0.067], ***p < 0.001), poorer scores on adjusted prosaccade accuracy, and poorer scores on antisaccade accuracy (Accuracy: r = -0.105, 95% CI [-0.197, -0.011], *p = 0.029; Adjusted accuracy: r = -0.108, 95% CI [-0.200, -0.015], *p = 0.024). Our AI-based eye tracking technology implemented on a tablet could reliably discriminate eye movements of the TD group and the ADHD group, providing a potential solution for ADHD screening outside of clinical settings.

Mixed amphetamine salts have also exhibited efficacy in reducing ADHD symptoms in adults. Future research should explore their potential use in treating bipolar disorder and cocaine dependence, considering the associated risks and benefits. MDMA-assisted psychotherapy has emerged as an innovative approach to treating PTSD, leading to sustained reductions in symptoms and even promoting post-traumatic growth. Furthermore, it has shown promise in managing anxiety related to life-threatening illnesses. Dextroamphetamine and phentermine have demonstrated efficacy in treating cocaine and opioid dependence, ADHD, and obesity. However, careful consideration and monitoring by medical professionals are essential due to the potential risks and benefits associated with them. In conclusion, amphetamine-type stimulants present a promising avenue for therapeutic interventions in various psychiatric conditions. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to comprehensively understand their mechanisms of action, dosage requirements, and long-term effects in different patient populations.

32 Associations between Childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Learning Disabilities and Cognition in Late Adulthood.

Objective:There has been relatively little research on the effect of childhood attention difficulties/weaknesses and learning disabilities/differences on cognitive aging. This study examined associations between self-reported symptoms and diagnoses/concerns of childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading or math learning disabilities (LD) and cognitive abilities in older adulthood. We hypothesized that cognitive weaknesses in childhood would be associated with cognitive abilities later in life.Participants and Methods:The 25 individuals with healthy cognition or MCI were recruited from the greater Philadelphia area (Mage= 74.4; SD= 5.34; 40% men; 84%white) and completed a self-report questionnaire of childhood ADHD and LD. Specifically, participants rated their experience of ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity and indicated whether they had a past diagnosis of (or concerns regarding past) ADHD, math LD or language/reading LD Participants also completed tests of language, attention, episodic memory, executive function, and processing speed. Pearson or point-biserial correlation coefficients (r-values) indicating a medium effect size (.30 or greater) were interpreted as meaningful.Results:On average, participants reported 3.48 symptoms of inattention and 2.56 symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity (i.e., at least six symptoms from either category are consistent with diagnostic criteria for ADHD). 16% of the sample reported childhood ADHD/attention difficulties, 48% reported childhood math LD/math difficulties, and 32% reported childhood language LD/difficulties. On cognitive tests, the sample performed in the average range, with considerable variability (i.e., norm-based, demographically adjusted T-scores ranged from 20-74). The relation between cognitive scores and report of childhood ADHD symptoms was weak and non-significant correlation (r&lt;.18). By contrast, report of childhood ADHD/attention difficulties was associated with lower scores attention tests (r=.33). Report of childhood language LD/difficulties was associated with a worse overall cognitive composite (r=-.35) and executive function ability (r=-.35). Childhood math LD/difficulties was not meaningfully associated with lower scores on any of the cognitive tests administered. Unexpectedly, report of childhood cognitive difficulties also were associated with higher scores on cognitive tests, such that childhood ADHD/attention difficulties was associated with better performance on tests of episodic memory (r=.39), and childhood math LD/difficulties were associated with better performance on tests of language (r=-.37).Conclusions:Current cognitive abilities in older adults may be influenced by lifelong cognitive weakness and academic difficulties. A history of ADHD and LD/difficulties should be considered in clinical neuropsychological assessment and future research on cognitive aging should consider ADHD/LD from a lifespan, developmental framework.

Peer functioning difficulties may exacerbate symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and irritability over time: a temporal network analysis.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been consistently found to experience impairments in peer functioning. Irritability is highly prevalent in children with ADHD and may worsen social impairments given the frequent temper outbursts and low frustration tolerance characterizing irritability. However, it is still unclear how ADHD and irritability symptoms interact with peer functioning difficulties over time. Assessing these temporal dynamics using a novel longitudinal approach (i.e., temporal network analysis) may reveal precise targets for intervention. This study investigates the dynamic associations between ADHD symptoms, irritability, and peer functioning in a community sample of 739 children (ages 8-11 years, Mage = 10.06 [SD = 0.59], 47.77% females) assessed at three timepoints, 6 months apart, in a school-based study. Parents reported their child's ADHD symptoms using the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale (SNAP-IV), and irritability symptoms using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) irritability items. Children's peer functioning (i.e., peer acceptance, peer rejection, number of friendships, and victimization) was measured via peer nomination. To estimate the longitudinal associations between the variables, we built a graphical vector autoregression model for panel data. The longitudinal network highlighted that poor peer functioning contributed to increases in symptoms over time. Specifically, (1) physical victimization predicted increases in inattention, hyperactivity, and irritability; (2) peer rejection predicted increases in inattention, which in turn predicted increases in irritability; (3) peer acceptance predicted decreases in inattention and irritability; and (4) higher numbers of mutual friendships increased inattention. These results suggest that a negative social environment involving physical bullying and rejection may aggravate ADHD and irritability symptoms. Conversely, positive social interactions, such as being liked by peers, may improve inattention and irritability symptoms. Fostering social-emotional skills and positive social interactions and environments in children with ADHD and irritability may be a promising target for future interventions to reduce symptoms.

Prenatal sleep health and risk of offspring ADHD symptomatology and associated phenotypes: a prospective analysis of timing and sex differences in the ECHO cohort

Sleep difficulties are common in pregnancy, yet poor prenatal sleep may be related to negative long-term outcomes for the offspring, including risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Existing studies are few and have not examined timing of exposure effects or offspring sex moderation. We thus aimed to test the hypotheses that poor sleep health in pregnancy is associated with increased risk for ADHD symptoms and offspring sleep problems at approximately 4 years of age. Participants were 794 mother-child dyads enrolled in the NIH Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Study (ECHO). Participants self-reported on sleep duration, quality, and disturbances during pregnancy and on children's ADHD symptoms and sleep problems on the Child Behaviour Checklist. Pregnant participants were 32.30±5.50 years and children were 46% female. 44 percent of pregnant participants identified as Hispanic or Latine; 49% identified as White. Second-trimester sleep duration was associated with offspring ADHD symptoms (b=-0.35 [95% CI=-0.57,-0.13], p=0.026), such that shorter duration was associated with greater symptomatology. Poorer sleep quality in the second trimester was also associated with increased ADHD symptomatology (b=0.66 [95% CI=0.18, 1.14], p=0.037). Greater sleep disturbances in the first trimester were associated with offspring ADHD (b=1.03 [95% CI=0.32, 1.03], p=0.037) and in the second trimester with sleep problems (b=1.53 [95% CI=0.42, 2.92], p=0.026). We did not document substantial offspring sex moderation. Poor prenatal sleep health, particularly quality and duration in the second trimester, may be associated with offspring risk of neurodevelopmental disorders and sleep problems in early childhood. Further research is needed to understand mechanisms, yet our study suggests that prenatal maternal sleep may be a modifiable target for interventions aimed at optimizing early neurodevelopment.
