Exploring the Effects of the Photochromic Response and Crystallization on the Local Structure of Noncrystalline Niobium Oxide.

Niobium oxide (Nb2O5) is a versatile semiconductor material with photochromic properties. This study investigates the local structure of noncrystalline, short-range-ordered niobium oxide synthesized via a sol-gel method. X-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis unravels the structural arrangements within the noncrystalline materials at a local scale. In the following, in situ scattering and diffraction experiments elucidate the heat-induced structure transformation of the amorphous material into crystalline TT-Nb2O5 at 550 °C. In addition, the effect of photocatalytic conditions on the structure of the material was investigated by exposing the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials to ultraviolet light, resulting in a reversible color change from white to dark brown or blue. This photochromic response is due to the reversible elongation of the nearest Nb-O neighbors, as shown by local structure analysis based on in situ PDF analyses. Optical band gap calculations based on the ultraviolet-visible spectra collected for both the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials show that the band gap values reduced for the darkened materials return to their initial state after bleaching. Furthermore, electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals the reduction of Nb5+ to Nb4+ centers as a persistent effect. The study establishes a correlation between the band gap and the structure of niobium oxide, providing insights into the structure-performance relation at the atomic level.

Structure and phase transitions in niobium and tantalum derived nanoscale transition metal perovskites, Ba(Ti,MV)O3, M=Nb,Ta.

The prospect of creating ferroelectric or high permittivity nanomaterials provides motivation for investigating complex transition metal oxides of the form Ba(Ti, MV)O3, where M = Nb or Ta. Solid state processing typically produces mixtures of crystalline phases, rarely beyond minimally doped Nb/Ta. Using a modified sol-gel method, we prepared single phase nanocrystals of Ba(Ti, M)O3. Compositional and elemental analysis puts the empirical formulas close to BaTi0.5Nb0.5O3-δ and BaTi0.5Ta0.5O3-δ. For both materials, a reversible temperature dependent phase transition (non-centrosymmetric to symmetric) is observed in the Raman spectrum in the region 533-583K (260-310°C); for Ba(Ti, Nb)O3, the onset is at 543K (270°C); and for Ba(Ti, Ta)O3, the onset is at 533K (260°C), which are comparable with 390-393K (117-120°C) for bulk BaTiO3. The crystal structure was resolved by examination of the powder x-ray diffraction and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron total scattering data. It was postulated whether the structure adopted at the nanoscale was single or double perovskite. Double perovskites (A2B'B″O6) are characterized by the type and extent of cation ordering, which gives rise to higher symmetry crystal structures. PDF analysis was used to examine all likely candidate structures and to look for evidence of higher symmetry. The feasible phase space that evolves includes the ordered double perovskite structure Ba2(Ti, MV)O6 (M = Nb, Ta) Fm-3m, a disordered cubic structure, as a suitable high temperature analog, Ba(Ti, MV)O3Pm-3m, and an orthorhombic Ba(Ti, MV)O3Amm2, a room temperature structure that presents an unusually high level of lattice displacement, possibly due to octahedral tilting, and indication of a highly polarized crystal.

Toward an Understanding of the Anisotropy in Hcp Zinc Metal: Total Scattering Structural Study Using Synchrotron-Based, Temperature-Dependent, X-Ray Pair Distribution Function Analysis

Abstract: Among hexagonal close packing (hcp) metals, zinc has a non-ideal hcp structure due to a significantly increased axial ratio c/a. We studied the behavior of the ratio of lattice constants c/a and the ratio of thermal displacement parameters (U_33 / U_11) in the temperature range of 100-300 K, using the X-ray total scattering atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis over different refinement r-ranges. The temperature-dependent PDF analysis confirmed that the crystal structure of zinc has significant static distortion along the c-direction. The measured value of atomic displacement parameters of zinc showed a notable anisotropy as expressed by the ratio U_33 / U_11 of ≈ 2.2 at 100 K. The lattice parameter ratio c/a was slightly reduced at low temperatures but remained unusually large. The extrapolated value of the ratio c/a reached 1.832 at 0 K. The PDF refinements using the crystallographic model revealed that there are some local structure features in zinc that are not captured by the crystallographic model. On the other hand, our local structure refinement indicated a presence of local bond distortion along the z-direction that averaged out over wider r-range refinements with a large U_33 value. Resolving a structural issue in cerium-nickel-based oxide: a single compound or a two-phase system?

CeNiO3 has been reported in the literature in the last few years as a novel LnNiO3 compound with promising applications in different catalytic fields, but its structure has not been correctly reported so far. In this research, CeNiO3 (RB1), CeO2 and NiO have been synthesized in a nanocrystalline form using a modified citrate aqueous sol-gel route. A direct comparison between the equimolar physical mixture (n(CeO2) : n(NiO) = 1 : 1) and compound RB1 was made. Their structural differences were investigated by laboratory powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detector, and Raman spectroscopy. The surface of the compounds was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), while the thermal behaviour was explored by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their magnetic properties were also investigated with the aim of exploring the differences between these two compounds. There were clear differences between the physical mixture of CeO2 + NiO and RB1 presented by all of these employed methods. Synchrotron methods, such as atomic pair distribution function analysis (PDF), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), were used to explore the structure of RB1 in more detail. Three different models for the structural solution of RB1 were proposed. One structural solution proposes that RB1 is a single-phase pyrochlore compound (Ce2Ni2O7) while the other two solutions suggest that RB1 is a two-phase system of either CeO2 + NiO or Ce1-xNixO2 and NiO.

Investigating the Reaction Mechanism of Iridium Oxides for PEM Water Electrolysis by Operando Soft X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

With the increase in fossil energy consumption and the attendant pronounced climate changes, the call for sustainable energy forms has become urgent and has attracted more and more attention.1 Hydrogen (H2), generated by the electricity-derived water electrolysis, is now considered the promising energy carrier for conversion between electricity and chemical energy.2 The most developed water electrolysis technology up to date is the proton-exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, where commercial Pt/C works as the cathodic catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and noble metal-based materials serve as the anodic catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER).3 Considering the sluggish four-electron reaction kinetics of OER and the harsh acidic environment of PEM water electrolysis, the selectivity of high-efficient OER catalysts is narrowed down to Ir-based catalysts because of their superior activity, long-term stability and corrosion resistance against acidic environment.4 However, the scarcity of Ir on earth has impeded the wide application of PEM water electrolysis and has driven the research of cost-efficient OER catalysts. In this study, we thoroughly investigated several amorphous IrOx catalysts with different degree of crystallinity (SA103, SA58, SA14.6 and SA58) and revealed the relation between their structures and OER activities. Besides, BET surface areas, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM (STEM), PDF, and XAS were measured to thoroughly understand the catalytic properties.XRD patterns in Figure 1(a) showed that compared with the well-crystallized IrO2, SA58 sample showed slightly broad peak, while the diffraction peaks were much broad of other samples, indicating their amorphous structures. The amorphous structure of IrOx was characterized through atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analyses as shown in Figure 1(b). Different from the typical tetragonal symmetry of crystal IrO2, the combination of orthorhombic symmetry and monoclinic symmetry was found in the amorphous IrOx. Further, OER activities of all samples were investigated in 0.1 M HClO4 and the current density was calculated against the BET surface areas to examine the intrinsic catalytic activity (Figure 1(c)). The crystallized SA58 sample showed the lowest activity, while SA3.5 sample outperformed all other amorphous oxides. From PDF, it was found that the highest OER active SA3.5 sample exhibited the highest monoclinic phase ratio content. The catalytic structure properties were further evidenced by the XAS results. EXAFS results showed different electronic environment of monoclinic phase samples and further fitting results were in good agreement with the PDF analyses. Moreover, O K-edge results showed the formation of µ2-O (O-O) bond at around 528.7 eV, which was previously observed by Nong, H. N. et. al. through operando O-K edge measurements during OER process.5 It was concluded that that the low symmetry of monoclinic phase in amorphous samples resulted in the structure defection, and thus lead to large amount of active electrophilic OI - species, which boosting the OER activity. This finding provided fundamental understanding of the amorphous iridium oxides and could promisingly shed light on the future OER catalyst design. Fine-tuned photochromic WO3-x thin films: A detailed study from structural analysis to UV photo-sensing application

The oxygen substoichiometry of as-prepared WO3 (tungsten trioxide) nano-powders (NPs) from a polyol process was tuned via peptization of the NPs in aqueous solutions of different Cr2O72− oxidizing concentrations. The as-synthesized materials have been characterized by X-ray scattering (XRD and PDF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and UV-VIS photochromic activity. The local atomic structure of WO3-X was investigated using total scattering atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis based on X-ray total scattering data collected on powder at ambient conditions. The PDF analysis confirms that the crystal structure of all studied samples can be described in terms of very small crystallites with a P21/n space-group monoclinic framework but with anomalous unit cell distortion parameters, indicating that small crystallite sizes resulted in a larger monoclinic distortion (as measured by the beta angle of the unit cell). The nanometer dimension of the crystallites combined as well as the oxygen-tungsten stoichiometric ratio control, are key features for optimized photochromic properties. Moreover, we present the fabrication of a WO3-x thin film based UV photosensor, which was carried out on silica glass substrates via the dip-coating method. The obtained films exhibited a UV photoresponse and photoelectric characteristics at 5 V bias voltages able to detect very low UV doses, inferior to 10 W/m2. The photo-detection measurements prove the usability of our device as a UV photodetector with a good responsivity of 0.37 A/W and external quantum efficiency of more than 100% even at a very low power density (9.2 W/m2) of UV illumination.

3D Covalent Polyoxovanadate‐Organic Framework as an Anode for High‐Performance Lithium‐Ion Batteries

AbstractPolyoxometalates (POMs), as a unique class well‐defined metal‐oxo clusters with excellent multielectron redox properties, have attracted extensive attention in the field of energy storage and conversion, but it is still challenging to achieve their highly uniform and stable monodispersed. In this study, for the first time, polyoxovanadate (POV) is used, (NH4)2[VIV3VV3O10{NH2C(CH2O)3}3] (tris‐V6O19), as nodes and successfully obtain a 3D covalent polyoxovanadate‐organic framework through a green hydrothermal synthesis method, termed POF‐1. Total scattering atomic pair distribution function analysis confirms that POF‐1 has a noninterpenetrated diamond‐like framework, fully exposing the monodispersed tris‐V6O19, effectively utilizing the active components of VIV/VV and enhancing surface mass transfer. Notably, POF‐1 demonstrates exceptional performance in lithium‐ion batteries, achieving a high reversible capacity of 887.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and retaining over 92% capacity at 1 C during 1000 cycles. Electrochemistry mechanism and density functional theory calculations reveal that V centers in tris‐V6O19 and carbonyls (C═O) in BDOEB linkers are the main active sites, with each POF‐1 fragment capable of storing up to 14 Li+. This study opens a new pathway for the efficient and green synthesis of new 3D well‐defined POM‐organic frameworks, and shows great application prospect in the field of energy storage.

Ethanol-water motifs-A re-interpretation of the double-difference pair distribution functions of aqueous iron oxide nanoparticle dispersions.

In dispersion, nanoparticles can interact with the surrounding dispersion medium, such that an interfacial region with a structure differing from that of the bulk exists. Distinct nanoparticulate surfaces induce specific degrees of interfacial phenomena, and the availability of surface atoms is a crucial prerequisite for interfacial restructuring. Here, we investigate the nanoparticle-water interface of 0.5-10 wt. % aqueous iron oxide nanoparticle dispersions of 6nm diameter in the presence of 6 vol. % ethanol with x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. The absence of surface hydroxyl-groups in XAS spectra is in accordance with the double-difference PDF (dd-PDF) analysis, due to a fully covered surface from the capping agent. The previously observed dd-PDF signal is not stemming from a hydration shell, as postulated in Thomä et al. [Nat Commun. 10, 995 (2019)], but from the residual traces of ethanol from nanoparticle purification. With this article, we provide an insight into the arrangement of EtOH solutes in water at low concentration.

Three-dimensional charge density wave in the dual heavy fermion system UPt2Si2

Heavy fermion liquids offer via their Kondo lattice diverse possibilities for exotic ground states. Using variable-temperature atomic pair distribution function analysis, we study the local atomic structure of the ``dual'' heavy fermion liquid $\mathrm{U}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$, which exhibits antiferromagnetism consistent with localized $5f$-electron states and transport properties characteristic to itinerant $5f$-``$spd$'' hybridized electron systems. We show that $\mathrm{U}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$ exhibits periodic lattice distortions (PLDs) involving both uranium and platinum atoms that are characteristic to three-dimensional charge density waves. The temperature evolution of the PLDs tracks that of the transport and magnetic properties, suggesting the presence of little-known $5f$-electron-lattice interactions. We argue that PLDs in heavy fermion liquids in general, and in particular in $\mathrm{U}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$, appear as new degrees of freedom that entangle competing electronic states and, as such, must be accounted for when their rich physics is considered.

Crystal and local structures of La2Co7H obtained by synchrotron X-ray total scattering

We investigated the crystal and local structures of La2Co7Hx using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) in the first absorption process. La2Co7 with a Ce2Ni7-type structure was transformed into La2Co7H7.4 with an orthorhombic structure (space group: Pbcn), determined by Rietveld refinement, through the formation of La2Co7H4.1. The expansions of the lattice parameters of La2Co7H7.4 from the original alloy were Δa = −3.2 %, Δb = −3.4 %, and Δc = 29.2 %. The unit cell expanded anisotropically. The local structure of La2Co7Hx (x = 0, 4.1, and 7.4) was determined by performing an atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. The results showed no significant difference between the crystal and local structures of La2Co7 and La2Co7H4.1. The refined structural parameters of La2Co7H7.4 obtained by the PDF analysis were inconsistent with the Rietveld analysis results. The local distortion was not negligible, and the local atomic positions of the metal atoms deviated from the crystal structure. The local distortion of the CaCu5-type cell of La2Co7H7.4 was greater than that of the MgZn2-type cell.

Chemical compression and ferroic orders in La substituted BiFeO3

Chemical compression effects on the ferroic orders in La substituted $\mathrm{BiFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ are studied by atomic pair distribution function analysis and structure modeling. While rhombohedral $\mathrm{BiFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ exhibits ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism (AF) with a cycloidal Fe spin arrangement leading to zero magnetization, La substituted $\mathrm{BiFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ exhibits a reduced lattice polarization, strengthened AF order, and an apparently suppressed spin cycloid leading to nonzero magnetization. The observed changes in the ferroic orders arise from the chemical compression induced changes in the octahedral rotation and ferroelectric displacement of Bi atoms, which appear as lattice degrees of freedom entangling the electronic and magnetic orders in $\mathrm{BiFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$.

Pair distribution function analysis of nano-object assemblies

The atomic pair distribution function (aPDF) analysis technique, also known as the total scattering method, which considers both Bragg and diffuse scattering, has been used extensively to probe local atomic arrangements in crystalline and disordered materials. In contrast, there have been limited applications of the PDF in self-assembled nanomaterials, which represent a class of materials built from nanoscale objects, such as nano-colloids, micelles and proteins. As distinguished from atoms, nano-objects have polydispersity in size and shape, and such form-factor effects complicate the application of PDF analysis to nano-systems. Herein, the application of the PDF is extended to spherical nano-object assemblies and the formulae for the nano-PDF (nPDF) are derived, showing some differences from the aPDF. By numerical simulations, the properties of the nPDF (peak broadening and pattern profile) are studied systematically as a function of structural features, such as nano-object parameters (size and size polydispersity) and assembly structural features (size, shape, structure type and lattice disorder), and of data processing parameters (q cut-off and `missing' data in ultra-small-angle regions). The nPDF analysis method is found to provide an effective route to revealing not only nanoscale but also mesoscale structural properties, for example the morphology of a nano-assembly.

Recognizing the Minimum Structural Units Driving the Crystallization of SAPO-34 in a Top-Down Process.

Recognizing the structure and nature of the nuclei for zeolites crystallization on an atomic level is of great importance, which can provide guidance on the control of crystallization kinetics and the rational synthesis of zeolites. However, it remains a long-standing challenge due to the difficulty in characterization of amorphous precursor with limited crystal nuclei. Herein, a top-down synthesis system was designed for SAPO-34 molecular sieve and well investigated. A clear precursor solution with abundant SAPO-34 crystal nuclei was obtained under a depolymerization-dominant condition. The species in the liquid precursor were identified by FT-ICR MS, solid-state MAS NMR and atomic pair distribution function analyses. In combination with various designed experiments, it is revealed that both the formation of small species containing Si-O-Al bonds and reaching a certain concentration, is crucial for driving the crystallization of SAPO-34, rather than structural units with specific spatial conformation. This work provides an important understanding on the (pre)nucleation of SAPO-34 and sheds light on the synthesis control of SAPO molecular sieves.

Synthesis of Catalytic Precursors Based on Mixed Ni-Al Oxides by Supercritical Antisolvent Co-Precipitation

Mixed Ni-Al oxide catalytic precursors with different elemental ratios (20, 50, and 80 wt.% Ni0) were synthesized using green supercritical antisolvent co-precipitation (SAS). The obtained oxide precursors and metal catalysts were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, CO adsorption, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that the composition and structure of the Ni-Al precursors are related to the Ni content. The mixed Ni1−xAlxO oxide with NiO-based crystal structure was formed in the Ni-enriched sample, whereas the highly dispersed NiAl2O4 spinel was observed in the Al-enriched sample. The obtained metal catalysts were tested in the process of anisole H2-free hydrogenation. 2-PrOH was used as a hydrogen donor. The catalyst with 50 wt.% Ni0 demonstrated the highest activity in the hydrogenation process.

Mapping structural heterogeneity at the nanoscale with scanning nano-structure electron microscopy (SNEM)

Here we explore the use of scanning electron diffraction (also known as 4D-STEM) coupled with electron atomic pair distribution function analysis (ePDF) to understand the local order (structure and chemistry) as a function of position in a complex multicomponent system, a hot rolled, Ni-encapsulated, Zr65Cu17.5Ni10Al7.5 bulk metallic glass (BMG), with a spatial resolution of 3 nm. We show that it is possible to gain insight into the chemistry and chemical clustering/ordering tendency in different regions of the sample, including in the vicinity of nano-scale crystallites that are identified from virtual dark field images and in heavily deformed regions at the edge of the BMG. In addition to simpler analysis, unsupervised machine learning was used to extract partial PDFs from the material, modeled as a quasi-binary alloy, and map them in space. These maps allowed key insights not only into the local average composition, as validated by EELS, but also a unique insight into chemical short-range ordering tendencies in different regions of the sample during formation. The experiments are straightforward and rapid and, unlike spectroscopic measurements, don’t require energy filters on the instrument. We spatially map different quantities of interest (QoI’s), defined as scalars that can be computed directly from positions and widths of ePDF peaks or parameters refined from fits to the patterns. We developed a flexible and rapid data reduction and analysis software framework that allows experimenters to rapidly explore images of the sample on the basis of different QoI’s. The power and flexibility of this approach are explored and described in detail. Because of the fact that we are getting spatially resolved images of the nanoscale structure obtained from ePDFs we call this approach scanning nano-structure electron microscopy (SNEM), and we believe that it will be powerful and useful extension of current 4D-STEM methods.

Local Structure Manipulates Nonlinear Optical Properties in Non-stoichiometric Lithium Niobate

As a typical and commercial nonlinear optical (NLO) material, LiNbO3 usually suffers from non-stoichiometric compositions, but the role of non-stoichiometry in second harmonic generation (SHG) remains unclear. In this study, we prepared non-stoichiometric LiNbO3 with a Li mole percentage amount covering critical ranges from 47 to 50. We found that a 47 mol % Li amount can remarkably weaken the SHG response by 50% without an obvious change of the band gap. A detailed structural analysis indicates that reducing the Li content brings anti-occupied Nb (NbLi4·) together with Li vacancies (VLi′), which decreases local distortions and local polarizations of both NbO6 and LiO6 octahedra and ultimately lead to the decline of the SHG response. Such effects are discussed in terms of the looser and less anisotropic structure character of LiNbO3. The above results are supported by joint synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction, atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and theoretical calculations. These insights are helpful to the future design of functional materials in non-stoichiometric compositions.

In Situ Visualization of Local Distortions in the High-Tc Molecule-Intercalated Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe2 Superconductor.

A time-resolved synchrotron X-ray total scattering study sheds light on the evolution of the different structural length scales involved during the intercalation of the layered iron-selenide host by organic molecular donors, aiming at the formation of the expanded-lattice Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe2 hybrid superconductor. The intercalates are found to crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure at the average level, however, with an enhanced interlayer iron-selenide spacing (d = 16.2 Å) that accommodates the heterocyclic molecular spacers. Quantitative atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis at variable times suggests distorted FeSe4 tetrahedral local environments that appear swollen with respect to those in the parent β-FeSe. Simultaneously acquired in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data disclose that secondary phases (α-Fe and Li2Se) grow significantly when a higher lithium concentration is used in the solvothermal reaction or when the solution is aged. These observations are in line with the strongly reducing character of the intercalation medium's solvated electrons that mediate the defect chemistry of the expanded-lattice superconductor. In the latter, intralayer correlated local distortions indicate electron-donating aspects that reflect in somewhat enlarged Fe-Se bonds. They also reveal a degree of relief of chemical pressure associated with a large distance between Fe and Se sheets ("taller" anion height) and a stretched Fe-Fe square planar topology. The elongation of the latter, derived from the in situ PDF study, speaks for a plausible increase in the Fe-site vacancy concentration. The evolution of the local structural parameters suggests an optimum reaction window where kinetically stabilized phases resemble the distortions of the edge-sharing Fe-Se tetrahedra, required for a high-Tc in expanded-lattice iron-chalcogenides.

Lattice Strain and Surface Activity of Ternary Nanoalloys under the Propane Oxidation Condition.

The ability to harness the catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons is critical for both clean energy production and air pollutant elimination, which requires a detailed understanding of the dynamic role of the nanophase structure and surface reactivity under the reaction conditions. We report here findings of an in situ/operando study of such details of a ternary nanoalloy under the propane oxidation condition using high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction coupled to atomic pair distribution function (HE-XRD/PDF) analysis and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The catalysts are derived by alloying Pt with different combinations of second (Pd) and third (Ni) transition metals, showing a strong dependence of the catalytic activity on the Ni content. The evolution of the phase structure of the nanoalloy is characterized by HE-XRD/PDF probing of the lattice strain, whereas the surface activity is monitored by DRIFTS detection of the surface intermediate formation during the oxidation of propane by oxygen. The results reveal the dominance of the surface intermediate species featuring a lower degree of oxygenation upon the first C-C bond cleavage on the lower-Ni-content nanoalloy and a higher degree of oxygenation upon the second C-C bond cleavage on the higher-Ni-content nanoalloy. The face-centered-cubic-type phase structures of the nanoalloys under the oxidation condition are shown to exhibit Ni-content-dependent changes of lattice strains, featuring the strongest strain with little variation for the higher-Ni-content nanoalloy, in contrast to the weaker strains with oscillatory variation for the lower-Ni-content nanoalloys. This process is also accompanied by oxygenation of the metal components in the nanoalloy, showing a higher degree of oxygenation for the higher-Ni-content nanoalloy. These subtle differences in phase structure and surface activity changes correlate with the Ni-composition-dependent catalytic activity of the nanoalloys, which sheds a fresh light on the correlation between the dynamic change of atomic strains and the surface reactivity and has significant implications for the design of oxidation catalysts with enhanced activities.

The solution-phase molecular structure of five redox- and photo-active bimetallic complexes was directly probed using high-energy X-ray scattering and atomic pair distribution function analysis in the Research Article by Xiaosong Li, Karen L. Mulfort et al. (e202111764). The analysis reveals significant conformational differences between the solution-phase and solid-state structures of these complexes that may be relevant for interactions between the two metal centers.
