Investigation of Erosion and Deposition Due to Flows with Particles.

In this work, we employed experimental technique to study the issue of particle erosion and deposition in multiphase flows involving both particles of micro/meso- and nanoscale (sand particles and iron oxide particles). Especially, liquids with immersed nanoparticles gained a lot of interest in the recent years due to their enhanced thermal properties. At the same time, this type of fluids is still not widely used in practical and engineering applications, and one of the reasons is a risk of leading to erosion and deposition on, for instance, pipe walls. In our experiments, an aluminum plate was subjected to a flow with particles by immersing it in a beaker with a rotating fluid for 530 h. After this, the plate was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), followed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. According to our observations, the erosion was mainly caused by the largest particles (sand particles), while the nanoparticles did not lead to clear erosion but resulted in significant deposition due to strong adhesion, as well as corrosion, resulting in aluminum oxide formation. This issue was also confirmed through theoretical analysis by comparing the momentum response time and the characteristic time of the flow, as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Design and Optimization of PEDOT/Graphene Oxide and PEDOT/Reduced Graphene Oxide Electrodes to Improve the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cells, Accompanied by Comprehensive Electrochemical Analysis

A comprehensive investigation into the design and electrochemical optimization of composite electrodes consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/graphene oxide (GO)/Methanococcus deltae and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Methanococcus deltae hybrids, anchored onto stainless-steel (SS) substrates, has been conducted. The GO and rGO materials were synthesized using a modified Hummer method. The resulting SS/PEDOT/GO and SS/PEDOT/rGO composite electrodes were subjected to systematic electrochemical characterization, focusing on the PEDOT p-type and n-type doping/undoping processes within diverse solvent environments (CH3CN and H2O) and electrolyte compositions (LiClO4 and KCl). Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the successful integration of graphene derivatives into the electrode structures, while field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed increased surface roughness upon GO and rGO incorporation. This increase in surface roughness is believed to enhance the adhesion of Methanococcus deltae microorganisms and facilitate efficient electron transport. Electrochemical measurements showed that the resulting SS/PEDOT/GO and SS/PEDOT/rGO anodes exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity. The SS/PEDOT/GO electrode achieved a maximum power density of 1014.420 mW/cm2, while the SS/PEDOT/rGO electrode reached 632.019 mW/cm2.

Myrrh Oleo‐Gum Resin as a Functional Additive in Pectin and κ‐Carrageenan Composite Films for Food Packaging

ABSTRACTMyrrh oleo‐gum‐resin (MOGR) is a natural substance that has a rich history of medicinal use due to its anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The present study reports on the fabrication and assessment of pectin and K‐carrageenan composite films infused with varying proportions (0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7%) of MOGR. Morphological analysis of the film samples was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the introduction of MOGR led to a notable increase in surface roughness. The SEM micrographs of the films showed that the MOGR addition had an important effect on the microstructure of the film. The surface hydrophobicity of the MOGR‐loaded films increased, as confirmed by the rise in the contact angle. Moreover, there was an increase in the thickness (0.062 ± 0.004–0.095 ± 0.006 mm) and opacity (1.24 ± 0.07–9.41 ± 0.24) of the films with the addition of MOGR; however, tensile strength (7.30 ± 0.50–4.92 ± 0.34 MPa), elongation at break (32.41% ± 1.0%–29.70% ± 0.24%), and barrier properties decreased. Additionally, a rise in MOGR concentration corresponded to a rise in overall color difference ΔE (0.77 ± 0.03–5.09 ± 0.49) of the films. Notably, the incorporation of MOGR led to an increase in the antioxidant activity of the composite films, indicating potential applications in functional packaging materials.

Electrophoretic deposition of novel antibacterial and biocompatible polydopamine and ZIF-8 hybrid composite coating on anodized Ti-6Al-4V alloy with silane primary substrate

Production of biocompatible and corrosion resistance dental implant is a requirement in the modern dental science. In this work, the Ti-6Al-4V was used alloy for the dental implant application that has investigated to make it more corrosion resistive and antibacterial with electrophoretic deposition of silane precursor solution that made of acidic solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and methyl three ethoxy silane (MTES). The optimized silane coating has been achieved with 30 V, 30 min and at 100 °C ramped annealing by comparison of Taffel analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Also, a new nanocomposite including polydopamine (PDA) and zeolite imidazole frame work composed from Zn (NO3)2 .6H2O and 2-methylimidazole (ZIF-8) that name PDA@ZIF-8 has been used as biocompatible and corrosion resistance amplifier to the precursor solution and used in the multilayer deposition process. The morphology analysis including atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) imaging and the obtained parameters show that coating has appropriate roughness that could increase the bounding of implant. A good adhesion strength has been determined for the two-layers silane coating with PDA@ZIF-8 according to the pull- off test. On the other hand, the antibacterial analysis indicate that the coating is an effective material for S. mutans and E. coli reduction that is another criterion for the dental implant materials. The results was introduced the coated Ti-6Al-4V could be used as corrosion resistive and antibacterial dental implant material.

Mechanism of action of the novel reagent dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride on magnesite and quartz surfaces

Silica impurities are one of the key factors that reduce the quality of magnesite. In this experiment, dodecyl trimethylammonium chloride (KDMP) was used as a quartz collector for silica-magnesium separation, and mineral flotation tests demonstrated that KDMP can effectively desiliconize and purify magnesite under the conditions of 20 mg/L and pH 5.0. Contact angle and Zeta potential measurements show that KDMP alters quartz’s characteristics more than magnesite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests show that KDMP works on quartz and adsorbs solely on its surface, not on magnesite. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images revealed that the KDMP collector adsorbed exclusively on the quartz surface, forming a layer of adsorption structure, but was weak on the magnesite surface. As a result, the KDMP collector is a highly intriguing flotation collector that can efficiently separate magnesite from quartz while also introducing a new form of collector for the separation and purification of low-grade magnesite.

Recent Progress of Imaging Chemical Bonds by Scanning Probe Microscopy: A Review.

In the past decades, the invention of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) as the versatile surface-based characterization of organic molecules has triggered significant interest throughout multidisciplinary fields. In particular, the bond-resolved imaging acquired by SPM techniques has extended its fundamental function of not only unraveling the chemical structure but also allowing us to resolve the structure-property relationship. Here, we present a systematical review on the history of chemical bonds imaged by means of noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (BR-STM) techniques. We first summarize the advancement of real-space imaging of covalent bonds and the investigation of intermolecular noncovalent bonds. Beyond the bond imaging, we also highlight the applications of the bond-resolved SPM techniques such as on-surface synthesis, the determination of the reaction pathway, the identification of molecular configurations and unknown products, and the generation of artificial molecules created via tip manipulation. Lastly, we discuss the current status of SPM techniques and highlight several key technical challenges that must be solved in the coming years. In comparison to the existing reviews, this work invokes researchers from surface science, chemistry, condensed matter physics, and theoretical physics to uncover the bond-resolved SPM technique as an emerging tool in exploiting the molecule/surface system and their future applications.

Evaluation of AlN insertion layer on the properties of heterogeneous integrated Ga2O3 films on sapphire

Integration of gallium oxide (Ga2O3) with highly thermal conductive AlN/sapphire substrate is more effective to dissipate heat in the Ga2O3-based devices. In this work, the properties of Ga2O3 films grown on sapphire and AlN/sapphire substrates via MOCVD were both examined via various experimental methods. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed good crystallinity and different orientations of Ga2O3 and AlN thin films. The absorption properties and band gaps were extracted from UV/Vis spectra. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) scanning images showed smooth Ga2O3 surfaces on sapphire and AlN/sapphire substrates (RMSs of 2.4 nm and 4.8 nm, respectively). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) highlighted well-defined grains of Ga2O3 and distinct boundaries of both heterostructures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis depicted the distributions of various components throughout the films. Finally, by using the time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method, the thermal conductivity and the thermal boundary conductivity of Ga2O3 without AlN interlayer were found to be 3.1 W/(m·K) and 70.1 MW/(m2·K) respectively. By comparison, adding AlN interlayer made the thermal conductivity and thermal boundary conductivity rise to 3.3 W/(m·K) and 111.5 MW/(m2·K) respectively. These findings have demonstrated the high-quality Ga2O3/AlN integration and good heat dissipation provided by AlN interlayer, opening up new prospects for Ga2O3/AlN devices in the future.

Ultrasonic Production of Chitosan Nanoparticles and Their Application Against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Present in the Ataulfo Mango.

In Mexico, the Ataulfo mango crop faces significant challenges due to anthracnose, a disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The need to use eco-friendly fungicides is crucial to avoid the use of harmful synthetic chemicals. This study aimed to prepare chitosan nanoparticles through a simple and effective ultrasound-assisted top-down method, with high antifungal efficiency. The nanoparticles were prepared from chitosan (DD = 85%, MW = 553 kDa) and Tween 20 under constant sonication. The formation of the nanoparticles was initially confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy; and their physicochemical properties were subsequently characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The antifungal potential of the chitosan nanoparticles against the phytopathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was evaluated with isolated fungi obtained directly from mango tissues showing anthracnose symptoms in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. The fungus was identified through SEM imaging, showing a regular and smooth conidial layer, with cylindrical shape (r = 2 µm, h = 10 µm). In vitro tests were conducted with three different concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles to assess their inhibitory effects. After seven days of incubation, a maximum inhibition rate of 97% was observed with the 0.5% nanoparticle solution, corresponding to a fungal growth rate of 0.008 cm/h. At this time, the control mycelial growth was 7 cm, while the treated sample reached a radius of 0.55 mm. These results demonstrated the antifungal effect of the nanoparticles on the membrane and cell wall of the fungus, suggesting that their composition could induce a resistance response. The inhibitory effect was also influenced by the particle size (30 nm), as the small size facilitated penetration into fungal cells. Consequently, the parent compound could be formulated and applied as a natural antifungal agent in nanoparticle form to enhance its activity. The method described in this study offers a viable alternative for the preparation of chitosan nanoparticles, by avoiding the use of toxic reagents.

Multi-frequency power ultrasound (MFPU) pretreatment of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii): Effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis process and subsequent Maillard reaction

Crayfish, as a new consumer trend, has become one of the most popular freshwater aquatic foods in China, and its processed product output has been increasing year by year. In this study, the effect of multi-frequency power ultrasound (MFPU) pretreatment in various working modes including mono-, dual- and tri-frequency on the enzymatic hydrolysis and Maillard reaction of crayfish was investigated. Additionally, the underlying mechanism was also explored. Results showed that the degree of hydrolysis (DH) of crayfish was 23.89 %, while it increased to 40.78 % after MFPU pretreatment at 20/40 kHz dual-frequency, indicating that MFPU pretreatment significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the enzymatic hydrolysis of crayfish. The crayfish protein after MFPU pretreatment exhibited a decrease in α-helix and increase in β-fold content, and the occurrence in the unfolding of the protein structure and alteration of tertiary structure. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses, the MFPU pretreatment resulted in the fragmentation of crayfish protein. During the analyses of subsequent Maillard reaction, the composition and quantity of volatiles detected by the electronic nose and GC–MS indicated that MFPU pretreatment enhanced flavor of the Maillard reaction products. In conclusion, MFPU pretreatment is a promising technology for improving the degree of hydrolysis of crayfish protein and enhancing the flavor of Maillard reaction products.

Supercapacitor performance of pure and Ni-doped CuO electrodes prepared by USP

Abstract In this study, the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) technique was employed to fabricate pure and 3% Ni-doped copper oxide (CuO) thin films (TFs) on In2O3/SnO2 (ITO) coated glass substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that both pure and 3% Ni-doped CuO TFs exhibit a polycrystalline structure with the tenorite phase oriented preferentially along the (111) plane. The morphological properties of these TFs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed that the deposited TFs achieved the desired stoichiometry. The electrochemical properties of both pure and 3% Ni-doped CuO TFs were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). At a current density of 1 A g−1, the specific capacitance of pure CuO TFs was found to be 78 F g−1, decreasing to 2 F g−1 at 10 A g−1. In contrast, Ni-doped CuO TFs exhibited a specific capacitance of 722 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and 20 F g−1 at 10 A g−1. These results indicate that Ni-doping significantly enhances the specific capacitance values. The superior performance of Ni-doped CuO electrodes is attributed to their uniformly high porosity and improved electrical conductivity, demonstrating Ni-doped CuO as an optimal electrode material for pseudocapacitors.

The Effect of Doping Zinc Oxide Thin Films With (0.5 wt. %) Carbon Nanotubes by Vacuum Evaporation

The study included the production of nano-thin films made of zinc oxide doped with carbon nanotubes (ZnO:CNTs) at a doping ratio of 0.5 wt%. The materials are applied onto glass substrates using the vacuum evaporation process. The structural characteristics of the thin films of undiluted and doped ZnO were assessed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, the surface properties of the films were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The optical characteristics of the thin films were analyzed and described using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The ZnO thin films exhibited crystalline formations. The thin films exhibited significant orientations along the (100), (002), and (101) crystallographic planes, indicating their hexagonal phase structures. The crystal size of ZnO thin films exhibited a range of 30.87 nm to 19.96 nm after the process of doping. The study findings demonstrate that the addition of carbon nanotubes leads to an increase in the absorption ratio. Zinc-doped carbon nanotube thin films has features that make them suitable for many applications, such as gas detectors and UV detectors.

Particle size and band gap evaluation of green gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with potential applications

Abstract The present study was aimed towards green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using fungal strain (SGSK-7) with assessment of their size using different techniques viz., X-ray diffractormeter, Dynamic light scattering, Atomic force microscopy, FE-Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The intense characteristic diffraction peaks at angle 2Ѳ (38.13˚) presented the crystalline nature of the reduced gold solution and calculation of crystalline size (12 nm) using Scherer’s equation further confirmed synthesis of gold nanoparticles while dynamic light scattering analysis indicated the particle size range of gold nanoparticles between 2 nm to 50 nm. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis of extracellular gold nanoparticles depicts spherical shape of AuNPs of approximately 40 nm. Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy depicted the presence of the gold nanoparticles along with the other biomolecules secreted by fungus which plays vital role in reduction, capping and stabilization of gold nanoparticles. Energy dispersive X-ray, mapping analysis, Zeta potential and UV-Vis spectrophotometery analysis further confirmed the presence and stability of gold nanoparticles, respectively. Zeta potential of gold nanoparticles leads to conclude the neutral nature (-10 mV to 10mV) of the particles. The UV-Visible spectrophotometeric analysis also confirmed the formation of gold nanoparticles with an absorption peak at 547 nm. On the basis of UV-Visible spectra the optical band gap of 2.44 eV is examined. The phylogenetic relatedness of SGSK-7 revealed 99% homology with Aspergillus tamari after sequencing of the ITS region followed by BLAST.

Manipulative Single Electric Dipole with Spontaneous Translational Symmetry Breaking in a Two-Dimensional Crystal.

It is widely acknowledged that quantum entities with minimal mass cannot undergo spontaneous symmetry breaking due to strong quantum fluctuations. Here, we report the discovery of a positionally settled single electric dipole that can be manipulated and electrically polarized in a monolayer CoCl2-graphite heterostructure, which demonstrates an unprecedented example of spontaneous lattice-translational-symmetry breaking. Scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy show that the solitons are intrinsic paraelectric dipoles driven by synchronous charge-lattice distortion around individual CoCl6 octahedrons. Both the dipole moment and lateral position of the soliton can be manipulated by the electric field exerted from the tip, which offers polarity-switchable and layout-designable electrostatic potential landscapes that determine the band bending configuration. This study exemplifies a brand-new type of local charge-lattice order, appealing for further research on the mechanism underlying the soliton robustness, and the electrically and positionally controllable single dipole supports the feasibility of band tailoring in device applications.

Effects of Acid Etching on the Microstructure and Stiffness of Human Teeth

Abstract The mechanical properties of acid-etched enamel and dentin are important for understanding tooth erosion and developing innovative dental restorative materials. In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of both enamel and dentin were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to quantify the impact of acid etching. SEM images demonstrated that enamel rods have a diameter of approximately 5 μm, while dentinal tubules have a diameter of around 2 μm. After acid etching, the intertubular and peritubular regions were exposed, with the peritubular regions showing a thickness of approximately 1 μm. AFM measurements showed that the stiffness of enamel at the bottom, middle, and top layers is 26.28±4.24 GPa, 32.03±8.68 GPa, and 23.94±3.53 GPa, respectively. For dentin, the stiffness is 16.28±2.76 GPa at the bottom layer and 17.59±5.33 GPa at the middle layer. AFM morphology and stiffness maps illustrated the microstructures of enamel rod and sheaths, as well as dentin tubules in both unetched and acid-etched tooth sections. The stiffness of the acid-etched enamel rod and peritubular dentin decreased by 7-fold and 3.6-fold, respectively, compared to the unetched enamel rod and peritubular dentin.

Na2SO4-assisted shift in the nucleation mechanism of copper-electrocrystallization from an acidic bath

In this study, the effect of sodium sulphate (Na2SO4) on the nucleation mechanism of copper films during electrodeposition was investigated. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric studies were employed to analyze the kinetics of electrochemical nucleation. Phase analysis of the nucleated copper was performed via X-ray diffraction, while morphological and topographical studies were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to further validate the electrochemical findings. The deposits obtained in the presence of Na2SO4 were finer and more closely packed compared to those formed without Na2SO4. Additionally, the roughness of the deposits varied between the two conditions, with films formed in the presence of Na2SO4 being slightly smoother. The results indicate that the addition of Na2SO4 changed the nucleation mechanism from charge transfer controlled to mass transfer controlled.

Surface modification of ilmenite with sodium persulfate and its effect on flotation performance

Ilmenite is a challenging mineral to float, making the improvement of its floatability a prominent research focus. This study proposes a novel surface modification method using sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) activation in the sodium oleate system for ilmenite. The activation mechanism was investigated using micro-flotation, zeta potential analysis, adsorption measurement, contact angle measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), flotation kinetics calculation, and thermodynamic analysis. Flotation tests demonstrated a significant increase in ilmenite recovery after Na2S2O8 activation under weakly acidic conditions, particularly at pH 4.0, where recovery increased from 12.41 % to 67.24 %. Zeta potential, contact angle, and adsorption tests revealed that Na2S2O8 activation positively shifted the surface potential of ilmenite, enhancing sodium oleate adsorption and increasing hydrophobicity. FT-IR, XPS, and thermodynamic analyses showed that Na2S2O8 facilitated the conversion of Fe2+ to Fe3+ on the ilmenite surface. Additionally, activation with sodium persulfate increased the Fe3+ content on the surface from 20.13 % to 43.50 %, leading to the formation of a more stable ferric iron oleate. AFM scans confirmed that Na2S2O8 activation significantly increased the area and thickness of sodium oleate adsorbed on the ilmenite surface compared to unactivated ilmenite.

Scaling analysis of electrodeposited copper and the influence of a modified polysaccharide on surface roughness

The influence of a commercially available modified polysaccharide (HydroStar®, Chemstar Chemical Products) on the roughness of short-term and small-scale copper electrodeposits was investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), linear scan profilometry and scaling analysis. Copper was deposited on a 316L stainless steel cathode at 40 °C and 300 A m−2 from an electrolyte containing 40 g L−1 Cu2+, 170 g L−1 H2SO4, 1.5 g L−1 Fe3+, 15 mg L−1 Cl− and either 0, 10, 50 or 100 mg L−1 of HydroStar. Copper deposits produced between 15 and 25 min were imaged using AFM and 2D linear scan profilometry was used to gather surface features of copper samples produced in the range of 120 and 240 min. Scaling analysis was applied to quantify the surface characteristics of limiting roughness (δ) and critical length (LC) from which δ/LC was computed and related to the aspect ratio of surface features. All copper deposits showed a general rise in δ and LC with deposition time but the growth rates decreased when HydroStar was included in the electrolyte indicating that the additive lowers the vertical height of surface features as well as their widths. Furthermore, copper deposits were more consistently produced in the presence of HydroStar and, for a given value of limiting roughness, had surface features with wider base than those created in the absence of the additive. The results show that the modified polysaccharide acts to create smooth copper deposits by generating surface features with lower aspect ratios.

Amorphous to Polycrystalline Phase Transition of In Situ Annealed Ge Films: Structural, Morphological, Optical, and Electrical Characteristics

AbstractRadio Frequency (RF) sputtered germanium (Ge) thin films were deposited on glass substrate at in situ annealing temperatures of 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the Ge films were initially amorphous but transformed to polycrystalline after annealing at 450 °C. Further annealing up to 600 °C resulted in improved crystallinity. Strain studies of the films using XRD and Raman showed compressive (out‐of‐plane) and tensile (in‐plane) strains, respectively, throughout all the annealing temperatures. The surface morphology of the films was recorded using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), which showed grain growth with annealing temperatures. The optical energy gap evaluated from absorption spectra for crystalline films decreased with annealing temperature, indicating improvement in crystallinity of films. The resistivity of the films deduced using current‐voltage measurements was found to decrease with annealing temperature, which can be attributed to enhancement in grain size. This study establishes a correlation between strain, grain size, optical energy gap, and electrical resistivity with temperature for Ge films deposited on glass substrates. Thus, the present study provides insights into variation in physical and electrical properties of films with in situ annealing temperature for their applicability in optoelectronic devices.

Effects of carbon nanoparticle insertion on stress reduction in hydrogenated amorphous carbon films using plasma chemical vapor deposition

Stress reduction in hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films is of considerable interest for improving their performance as protective films. Herein, we reduced the compressive stress of the films by inserting carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) between two a-C:H layers to form an a-C:H/CNP/a-C:H sandwich structure using a system of plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We measured the deposition features of the CNPs via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and assessed the dependence of the stress on the thickness of the second a-C:H layer as a parameter of surface coverage, Cp. We represented the stress reduction as a function of Cp; mean size of large CNPs, and thickness of the first and second a-C:H layers. In addition, the surface and film morphologies were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with films without CNPs, those containing CNPs with 8.9 % Cp showed 36 % lower stress when the thickness of the second a-C:H layer was similar to that of the first (154 nm). The deposited CNPs exhibited two size groups, with mean sizes of the small and large CNPs of 5 and 16 nm, respectively. Stress reduction was strongly correlated with the distance between large CNPs. The insertion of CNPs between a-C:H films affects the surface morphology of the second layer, and the stress decreases when the growth stage of the film starts transitioning from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D).

Fluid confinement within a branched polymer structure enhances tribological performance of a poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine)-surface-modified contact lens.

The poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC)-modified, silicone hydrogel, contact lens (CL) material lehfilcon A has previously been demonstrated to have a lubricious, antifouling and ultra-soft surface. This study provides confirmatory identification of the outer polymer structures on this CL surface as branched PMPC structures. It further aims to understand their role in providing enhanced tribological performance via fluid confinement. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy infrared spectroscopy has been used to achieve both morphological and chemical confirmation of branched PMPC structures resembling the polysaccharide species present on the surface of the cornea. Measurements of the fluid-confinement behaviour of this layer, by means of nanoindentation experiments, show it to resist squeeze-out of the interstitial fluid, thereby boosting lubrication by virtue of a fluid-load-support mechanism. Tribological testing of CLs showed this effective lubrication to be maintained after one month of daily wearing.
