Studying the Photoactivity of Ag-Decorated TiO2 Nanotubes with Combined AFM and Raman Spectroscopy

The drive for the development of systems that can simultaneously investigate chemical and morphological information comes from the requisite to fully understand the structure and chemical reactivity relationships of materials. This is particularly relevant in photocatalysis, a field ruled by surface interactions. An in-depth understanding of these complex interactions could lead to significant improvements in materials design, and consequently, in photocatalytic performances. Here, we present a first approach to a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy characterization of anodic TiO2 nanotubes arrays decorated with Ag nanoparticle electrodeposition from either the same anodizing organic electrolyte or from an aqueous one. Photocatalytic substrates were used in up to 15 consecutive photocatalysis tests to prove their possible deterioration with reuse. Sample aging can, in principle, produce changes in both the morphology and the chemical compounds that characterize the photocatalyst surface. Adopting multiple characterization techniques, such as a combination of AFM and Raman spectroscopy in an original setup, can profitably enable the observation of surface contamination. A significant drop in photocatalytic activity was observed after 10 cycles on samples where silver was deposited from the organic electrolyte, while the others remained stable. Such a drop was ascribed to photocatalyst deactivation. While in other cases, a simple recovery treatment allowed the initial photoactivity to be restored, this deactivation was not restored even after chemical and thermal cleaning treatments.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence: Enabling the clinical translation of atomic force microscopy-based biomarkers for cancer diagnosis

The influence of biomechanics on cell function has become increasingly defined over recent years. Biomechanical changes are known to affect oncogenesis; however, these effects are not yet fully understood. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the gold standard method for measuring tissue mechanics on the micro- or nano-scale. Due to its complexity, however, AFM has yet to become integrated in routine clinical diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have the potential to make AFM more accessible, principally through automation of analysis. In this review, AFM and its use for the assessment of cell and tissue mechanics in cancer is described. Research relating to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the analysis of AFM topography and force spectroscopy of cancer tissue and cells are reviewed. The application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to AFM has the potential to enable the widespread use of nanoscale morphologic and biomechanical features as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in cancer treatment.

Investigating the role of extracellular polymeric substances produced by Parachlorella kessleri in Zn(II) bioremediation using atomic force microscopy

Microalgae, such as Parachlorella kessleri, have significant potential for environmental remediation, especially in removing heavy metals like zinc from water. This study investigates how P. kessleri, isolated from a polluted river in Argentina, can remediate zinc. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the research examined the interactions between Zn particles and cells grown with different nitrogen sources—nitrate or ammonium. The results showed that cells grown with nitrate produced extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), while those grown with ammonium did not. Raman spectroscopy revealed distinct metabolic responses based on the nitrogen source, with nitrate-grown cells showing altered profiles after zinc exposure. Zinc exposure also changed the surface roughness and nanomechanical properties of the cells, particularly in those producing EPS. AFM force spectroscopy experiments then confirmed strong Zn binding to EPS in nitrate-grown cells, while interactions were weaker in ammonium-grown cells that lacked EPS. Overall, our results elucidate the critical role of EPS in Zn removal by P. kessleri cells and show that Zn remediation is mediated by EPS adsorption. This study underscores the significance of regulating nitrogen sources to stimulate EPS production, offering insights that are essential for subsequent bioremediation applications.

Biomechanics Model to Characterize Atomic Force Microscopy-Based Virus-Host Cell Adhesion Measurements.

We present a model for virus-cell adhesion that can be used for quantitative extraction of adhesive properties from atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based force spectroscopy measurements. We extend a previously reported continuum model of viral cell interactions based on a single parameter representing adhesive energy density by using a cohesive zone model in which adhesion is represented by two parameters, a pull-off stress and associated characteristic displacement. This approach accounts for the deformability of the adhesive receptors, such as the Spike protein and transmembrane immunoglobulin and mucin domain (TIM) family that mediate adhesion of SARS-CoV-2 and Ebola viruses, and the omnipresent glycocalyx. Our model represents receptors as a Winkler foundation and aims to predict the pull-off force needed to break the adhesion between the virus and the cell. By comparing the force-separation curves simulated by the model and experimental data, we found that the model can effectively explain the AFM pull-off force trace, thus allowing quantification of the adhesion parameters. Our model provides a more refined understanding of viral cell adhesion and also establishes a framework for interpreting and predicting AFM force spectroscopy measurements.

Nanoscale Perturbations of Lipid Bilayers Induced by Magainin 2: Insights from AFM Imaging and Force Spectroscopy

This study explores the impact of the antimicrobial peptide magainin 2 (Mag2) on lipid bilayers with varying compositions. We employed high-resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) to reveal a dynamic spectrum of structural changes induced by Mag2. Our AFM imaging unveiled distinct structural alterations in zwitterionic POPC bilayers upon Mag2 exposure, notably the formation of nanoscale depressions within the bilayer surface, which we term as "surface pores" to differentiate them from transmembrane pores. These surface pores are characterized by a limited depth that does not appear to fully traverse the bilayer and reach the opposing leaflet. Additionally, our AFM-based force spectroscopy investigation on POPC bilayers revealed a reduction in bilayer puncture force (FP) and Young's modulus (E) upon Mag2 interaction, indicating a weakening of bilayer stability and increased flexibility, which may facilitate peptide insertion. The inclusion of anionic POPG into POPC bilayers elucidated its modulatory effects on Mag2 activity, highlighting the role of lipid composition in peptide-bilayer interactions. In contrast to surface pores, Mag2 treatment of E. coli total lipid extract bilayers resulted in increased surface roughness, which we describe as a fluctuation-like morphology. We speculate that the weaker cohesive interactions between heterogeneous lipids in E. coli bilayers may render them more susceptible to Mag2-induced perturbations. This could lead to widespread disruptions manifested as surface fluctuations throughout the bilayer, rather than the formation of well-defined pores. Together, our findings of nanoscale bilayer perturbations provide useful insights into the molecular mechanisms governing Mag2-membrane interactions.

Local probing of the nanoscale hydration landscape of kaolinite basal facets in the presence of ions

The interface between aqueous solutions and the facets of kaolinite plays an important role in a wide range of technological applications including tribology, paper production, oil recovery, waste water treatment and medical devices. This is made possible by kaolinite's layered structure, with its two basal surfaces -aluminol and siloxane-exhibiting different properties and reactivity. Using a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we probe in situ the hydration structure over both facets, in water and in the presence of added NaCl. The AFM images reflect the facets' first hydration layer, as confirmed from simulations. Complementary AFM spectroscopy measurements show an excellent agreement between the conservative component and MD's water density profiles, with discrete hydration layers on both facets and little sensitivity to added ions. The dissipative component of the measured tip-sample interactions is more sensitive to the presence of ions, with MD suggesting a link with the local water dynamics and transient instabilities between stable hydration layers. These effects are facet-dependant and more pronounced on the aluminol facet where the first water layer is better defined. Increasing the salt concentration allows hydrated ions to form more stable layers, with hints of organised ionic domains. The results provide unique insights into both the equilibrium molecular structure and dynamics of the kaolinite facets, potentially informing applications involving interfacial processes.

Characterization of Nanocrystalline SnS Thin Film Fabricated used PLD Method for Photodetection Applications

Pulsed laser deposition was used to create tin sulfide (SnS) nanoparticles with a Nd:YAG laser (700 mJ) with laser pulses of (200, 250, 300, and 350 pulses). Nanoparticles were created and investigated using XRD, AFM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy to understand their optical, topographical, and electrical properties. After that, a SnS photodetector was built for the first time, and its performance, photoresponse, and sensitivity were evaluated. The development of monocrystalline SnS films was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) examination. Clear crystallization with increased crystalline size and the optimum orientation was observed in the sample synthesized SnS thin film treated with 300 pulses. The crystallite size increased from 44 at 200 to 77 nm for 350 pulses. These films were characterized by better surface morphology with (111) preferred crystals. In addition, atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies showed that the average diameter of generated SnS nanoparticles rose from (39.4 nm to 64.7) nm when the laser pulses increased in pulsed laser deposition. Transmission measurements were used to determine the films' absorption coefficient energy gap (Eg), and they showed that the optical transition was direct and that the transmittance value dropped with increasing laser pulses. Band gap energy is reduced from 2.139 to 1.773 eV. Moreover, Hall Effect measurements on all samples demonstrate that all thin films were n-type, with charge carrier concentration increasing with increased pulses and carrier mobility decreasing with increased pulses. The photodetectors ' photosensitivity was evaluated in the dark after depositing Al contacts on SnS thin films through a metal mask. The Pulses of enhancement cause a red shift in the values of particular detectivity and quantum efficiency. The highest responsivity was obtained at 350 pulses, 6.72×10−1 AW−1. The high (QE) of 150% at 200 p and detectivity of 2.9×1011 cm, Hz1/2.W-1 at 300p.

Probing the interactions of the HIV-1 matrix protein-derived polybasic region with lipid bilayers: insights from AFM imaging and force spectroscopy.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) matrix protein contains a highly basic region, MA-HBR, crucial for various stages of viral replication. To elucidate the interactions between the polybasic peptide MA-HBR and lipid bilayers, we employed liquid-based atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and force spectroscopy on lipid bilayers of differing compositions. In 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) bilayers, AFM imaging revealed the formation of annulus-shaped protrusions upon exposure to the polybasic peptide, accompanied by distinctive mechanical responses characterized by enhanced bilayer puncture forces. Importantly, our AFM-based force spectroscopy measurements unveiled that MA-HBR induces interleaflet decoupling within the cohesive bilayer organization. This is evidenced by a force discontinuity observed within the bilayer's elastic deformation regime. In POPC/cholesterol bilayers, MA-HBR caused similar yet smaller annular protrusions, demonstrating an intriguing interplay with cholesterol-rich membranes. In contrast, in bilayers containing anionic 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (POPS) lipids, MA-HBR induced unique annular protrusions, granular nanoparticles, and nanotubules, showcasing its distinctive effects in anionic lipid-enriched environments. Notably, our force spectroscopy data revealed that anionic POPS lipids weakened interleaflet adhesion within the bilayer, resulting in interleaflet decoupling, which potentially contributes to the specific bilayer perturbations induced by MA-HBR. Collectively, our findings highlight the remarkable variations in how the polybasic peptide, MA-HBR, interacts with lipid bilayers of differing compositions, shedding light on its role in host membrane restructuring during HIV-1 infection.

Quantifying the Viscosity of Individual Submicrometer Semisolid Particles Using Atomic Force Microscopy.

Atmospheric aerosols' viscosities can vary significantly depending on their composition, mixing states, relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The diffusion time scale of atmospheric gases into an aerosol is largely governed by its viscosity, which in turn influences heterogeneous chemistry and climate-relevant aerosol effects. Quantifying the viscosity of aerosols in the semisolid phase state is particularly important as they are prevalent in the atmosphere and have a wide range of viscosities. Currently, direct viscosity measurements of submicrometer individual atmospheric aerosols are limited, largely due to the inherent size limitations of existing experimental techniques. Herein, we present a method that utilizes atomic force microscopy (AFM) to directly quantify the viscosity of substrate-deposited individual submicrometer semisolid aerosol particles as a function of RH. The method is based on AFM force spectroscopy measurements coupled with the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model. Using glucose, sucrose, and raffinose as model systems, we demonstrate the accuracy of the AFM method within the viscosity range of ∼104-107 Pa s. The method is applicable to individual particles with sizes ranging from tens of nanometers to several micrometers. Furthermore, the method does not require prior knowledge on the composition of studied particles. We anticipate future measurements utilizing the AFM method on atmospheric aerosols at various RH to aid in our understanding of the range of aerosols' viscosities, the extent of particle-to-particle viscosity variability, and how these contribute to the particle diversity observable in the atmosphere.

Effect of cholesterol on the mechanical stability of gel-phase phospholipid bilayers studied by AFM force spectroscopy.

The remarkably low sliding friction of articular cartilage in the major joints such as hips and knees, which is crucial for its homeostasis and joint health, has been attributed to lipid bilayers forming lubricious boundary layers at its surface. The robustness of such layers, and thus their lubrication efficiency at joint pressures, depends on the lipids forming them, including cholesterol which is a ubiquitous component, and which may act to strengthen of weaken the bilayer. In this work, a systematic study using an atomic force microscope (AFM) was carried out to understand the effect of cholesterol on the nanomechanical stability of two saturated phospholipids, DSPC (1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidlycholine) and DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero- phosphatidylcholine), that differ in acyl chain lengths. Measurements were carried out both in water and in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The nanomechanical stability of the lipid bilayers was quantitatively evaluated by measuring the breakthrough force needed to puncture the bilayer by the AFM tip. The molar fractions of cholesterol incorporated in the bilayers were 10% and 40%. We found that for both DSPC and DPPC, cholesterol significantly decreases the mechanical stability of the bilayers in solid-ordered (SO) phase. In accordance with the literature, the strengthening effect of salt on the lipid bilayers was also observed. For DPPC with 10mol % cholesterol, the effect of tip properties and the experimental procedure parameters on the breakthrough forces were also studied. Tip radius (2-42nm), material (Si, Si3N4, Au) and loading rate (40-1000nm/s) were varied systematically. The values of the breakthrough forces measured were not significantly affected by any of these parameters, showing that the weakening effect of cholesterol does not result from such changes in experimental conditions. As we have previously demonstrated that mechanical robustness improves the tribological performance of lipid layers, this study helps to shed light on the mechanism of physiological lubrication. Customization of an atomic force microscope for multidimensional measurements under environmental conditions.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an analytical surface characterization tool that reveals the surface topography at a nanometer length scale while probing local chemical, mechanical, and even electronic sample properties. Both contact (performed with a constant deflection of the cantilever probe) and dynamic operation modes (enabled by demodulation of the oscillation signal under tip-sample interaction) can be employed to conduct AFM-based measurements. Although surface topography is accessible regardless of the operation mode, the resolution and the availability of the quantified surface properties depend on the mode of operation. However, advanced imaging techniques, such as frequency modulation, to achieve high resolution, quantitative surface properties are not implemented in many commercial systems. Here, we show the step-by-step customization of an atomic force microscope. The original system was capable of surface topography and basic force spectroscopy measurements while employing environmental control, such as temperature variation of the sample/tip, etc. We upgraded this original setup with additional hardware (e.g., a lock-in amplifier with phase-locked loop capacity, a high-voltage amplifier, and a new controller) and software integration while utilizing its environmental control features. We show the capabilities of the customized system with frequency modulation-based topography experiments and automated voltage and/or distance spectroscopy, time-resolved AFM, and two-dimensional force spectroscopy measurements under ambient conditions. We also illustrate the enhanced stability of the setup with active topography and frequency drift corrections. We believe that our methodology can be useful for the customization and automation of other scanning probe systems.

Disentangling Electronic Transport and Hysteresis at Individual Grain Boundaries in Hybrid Perovskites via Automated Scanning Probe Microscopy

Underlying the rapidly increasing photovoltaic efficiency and stability of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) is the advancement in the understanding of the microstructure of polycrystalline MHP thin film. Over the past decade, intense efforts have been aimed at understanding the effect of microstructures on MHP properties, including chemical heterogeneity, strain disorder, phase impurity, etc. It has been found that grain and grain boundary (GB) are tightly related to lots of microscale and nanoscale behavior in MHP thin films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is widely used to observe grain and boundary structures in topography and subsequently to study the correlative surface potential and conductivity of these structures. For now, most AFM measurements have been performed in imaging mode to study the static behavior; in contrast, AFM spectroscopy mode allows us to investigate the dynamic behavior of materials, e.g., conductivity under sweeping voltage. However, a major limitation of AFM spectroscopy measurements is that they require manual operation by human operators, and as such only limited data can be obtained, hindering systematic investigations of these microstructures. In this work, we designed a workflow combining the conductive AFM measurement with a machine learning (ML) algorithm to systematically investigate grain boundaries in MHPs. The trained ML model can extract GBs locations from the topography image, and the workflow drives the AFM probe to each GB location to perform a current-voltage (IV) curve automatically. Then, we are able to have IV curves at all GB locations, allowing us to systematically understand the property of GBs. Using this method, we discovered that the GB junction points are less conductive, potentially more photoactive, and can play critical roles in MHP stability, while most previous works only focused on the difference between GB and grains.

Investigating the activation of passive metals by a combined in-situ AFM and Raman spectroscopy system: a focus on titanium

Understanding the main steps involved in the activation of passive metals is an extremely important subject in the mechanical and energy industry and generally in surface science. The titanium-H2SO4 system is particularly useful for this purpose, as the metal can either passivate or corrode depending on potential. Although several studies tried to hypothesise the surface state of the electrode, there is no general consensus about the surface state of Ti in the active–passive transition region. Here by combining in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy, operating in an electrochemical cell, we show that the cathodic electrification of Ti electrodes causes the dissolution of the upper TiO2 portion of the passive film leaving the electrode covered by only a thin layer of titanium monoxide. Fast anodic reactions involved the acidification of the solution and accumulation of sulphur containing anions. This produces a local increase of the solution turbidity, allowing to distinguish favourable regions for the precipitation of TiOSO4·2H2O. These results give a clear answer to the long-stated question of the physical origin behind the formation of negative polarization resistances, sometimes occurring in corroding systems, and a rationale about the proton-induced degradation of passive surfaces in presence of sulphur containing species.

Direct CVD Growth of Transferable 3D Graphene for Sensitive and Flexible SERS Sensor

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene (Gr) has been successfully grown on a patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) with very low mismatch between Gr and the sapphire nanostructure through metal-catalyst-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, the transfer of the 3D Gr film without compromising the structural integrity of Gr is challenging because of the low etching rate of PSS. For easy and high-quality transfer of 3D Gr, we propose to coat a transfer-support layer (TSL) on PSS before direct CVD growth of 3D Gr. The TSL is directly deposited on PSS by atomic layer deposition without causing any structural changes in the substrate, as verified through atomic force microscopy (AFM). Few-layer 3D Gr is conformally produced along the surface of the TSL/PSS and successfully transferred onto a flexible substrate through wet-etching transfer, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy studies. We also present the fabrication of a sensitive and flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor based on 3D Gr on PMMA with high detection performance for low concentrations of R6G (10-9 M). The proposed transfer method with TSL is expected to broaden the use of 3D graphene in next-generation device applications.

Polymerization of aromatic dinitroso derivatives initiated by nitroso-terminated monolayer on Au(111) surface: Insights from ellipsometry, AFM and nano-FTIR spectroscopy

The possibility of on-surface intermolecular interactions of aromatic C-nitroso derivatives and the formation of azodioxy polymer thin films were studied by ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoscale Fourier transform infrared (nano-FTIR) spectroscopy. The nitroso terminal groups of monolayers of 3-thiocyanatopropyl-4-nitrosobenzoate on Au(111) surface were used as initiation sites for formation of azodioxy linkages by interactions with the six structurally different aromatic dinitroso derivatives prone to polymerization. Ellipsometry showed increased thicknesses of films formed by interactions of nitroso groups at the monolayer interface and aromatic dinitroso derivatives in solution suggesting the formation of azodioxy oligomer films. The obtained thickness values indicated that the films are composed of only a few monomeric subunits or that poorly organized surface structures are formed with possibly tilted and intertwined chains. Ellipsometry data were corroborated with AFM topography images which revealed the appearance of a high number of islands, attributed to domains of azodioxy oligomers, and increased local RMS roughness values. Both ellipsometry and AFM indicated a greater tendency towards the azodioxy oligomers on the Au(111) surface at longer adsorption times. Nano-FTIR spectroscopy enabled chemical identification of the films at the nanoscale. Bands attributed to the E-azodioxy groups were detected in nano-FTIR spectra, which strongly supported the conclusion that the islands in the AFM images represent azodioxy oligomers, the formation of which was initiated by interactions of nitroso groups at the monolayer interface with dinitroso derivatives in solution.

Identification of a nitrogen vacancy in GaN by scanning probe microscopy

Gallium nitride (GaN) is a material with important applications in optoelectronics, wireless communications, and power electronics. Devices for such applications are normally made with GaN single-crystal wafers. Yet an infinitesimal amount of atomic defects in these single crystals considerably hinders the electronic performance of GaN. One kind of atomic defect in GaN crystals that has been theoretically predicted but eludes direct experimental observation is nitrogen (N) vacancies. Here, we unambiguously identify a single N vacancy on a cleaved $m$-plane surface of GaN by direct visualization in real space with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The presence of a vacancy is established by AFM imaging and force spectroscopy measurements. The identification is accomplished by the analysis of STM images, tunneling current spectroscopy, and comparison with the outcomes from the quantification of band bending near the surface, current calculations, and first-principles simulations. All this information provides insight into the electronic perturbation of a single N vacancy at the surface band structure of GaN. Our results provide further understanding of the effect that point defects have on GaN, and will hopefully contribute to tune the behavior of this technologically relevant material in electronic devices.

Quantification of bush-cricket acoustic trachea mechanics using Atomic Force Microscopy nanoindentation

Derived from the respiratory tracheae, bush-crickets’ acoustic tracheae (or ear canals) are hollow tubes evolved to transmit sounds from the external environment to the interior ear. Due to the location of the ears in the forelegs, the acoustic trachea serves as a structural element that can withstand large stresses during locomotion. In this study, we report a new Atomic Force Microscopy Force Spectroscopy (AFM-FS) approach to quantify the mechanics of taenidia in the bush-cricket Mecopoda elongata. Mechanical properties were examined over the longitudinal axis of hydrated taenidia, by indenting single fibres using precision hyperbolic tips. Analysis of the force-displacement (F-d) extension curves at low strains using the Hertzian contact model showed an Elastic modulus distribution between 13.9 MPa to 26.5 GPa, with a mean of 5.2 ± 7 GPa and median 1.03 GPa. Although chitin is the primary component of stiffness, variation of elasticity in the nanoscale suggests that resilin significantly affects the mechanical properties of single taenidia fibres (38% of total data). For indentations up to 400 nm, an intricate chitin-resilin response was observed, suggesting structural optimization between compliance and rigidity. Finite-element analysis on composite materials demonstrated that the Elastic modulus is sensitive to the percentage of resilin and chitin content, their location and structural configuration.Based on our results, we propose that the distinct moduli of taenidia fibres indicate sophisticated evolution with elasticity playing a key role in optimization. Statement of significanceIn crickets and bush-crickets, the foreleg tracheae have evolved into acoustic canals, which transport sound to the ears located on the tibia of each leg. Tracheae are held open by spiral cuticular micro-fibres called taenidia, which are the primary elements of mechanical reinforcement. We developed an AFM-based method to indent individual taenidia at the nanometre level, to quantify local mechanical properties of the interior acoustic canal of the bush-cricket Mecopoda elongata, a model species in hearing research. Taenidia fibres were immobilized on a hard substrate and the indenter directly approached the epicuticle surface. This is the first characterization of the nano-structure of unfixed tracheal taenidia, and should pave the way for further in vivo mechanical investigations of auditory structures.

Mechanism by which a cyclic-nucleotide gated ion channel discriminates between nucleotides revealed by AFM force spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations

Cyclic nucleotide (cN) gated ion channels such as the SthK channel are crucial in many physiological processes. Strangely, and despite their chemical similarity, cAMP acts as an activator while cGMP as an inhibitor of the SthK channel. We combined atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the mechanism of cyclic nucleotide binding domain (CNBD) discrimination between cAMP and cGMP. While short contact time AFM measurements revealed similar binding strengths of cAMP and cGMP, from longer contact times results suggest that ligand detection originates from the difference in binding modes of cAMP and cGMP.

An environmental approach for the photodegradation of toxic pollutants from wastewater using Pt–Pd nanoparticles: Antioxidant, antibacterial and lipid peroxidation inhibition applications

BackgroundGreen synthesis is an effective and friendly method for the environment, especially in recent years has been used in many areas. It finds application opportunities in many fields such as physics, chemistry, electronics, food, and especially health and is the subject of intensive studies in this field. ObjectivesThe synthesized Pt–Pd NPs were aimed to be used as a bio-based photocatalyst under sunlight to prevent wastewater pollution. In addition, it is aimed to use Pt–Pd NPs as biological agents in different applications in the future. MethodsIn this study, the platinum-palladium nanoparticles were synthesized by the extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa, the characterization of the nanoparticles was carried out by different methods (ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared transform spectroscopy atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ray diffraction (XRD) analysis). And we discussed several different parameters related to human health by obtaining platinum-palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt–Pd NPs) with a green synthesis method. These parameters are antioxidant properties (total phenolic, flavonoid, and DPPH scavenging activity), antibacterial activity, and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity. Gallic acid was used as standard phenolic, and quercetin was used as standard flavonoid reagents. The newly synthesized Hibiscus sabdariffa mediated green synthesized Pt–Pd NPs were compared with gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, the high antibacterial activity was shown by gram-positive bacteria. The photodegradation of Pt–Pd NPs was carried out against MB dye for 180 min. ResultsTEM results show that the average size of Pt–Pd NPs is around 4.40 nm. The total amount of phenolic compounds contained in 0.2 mg/ml of Pt-Pd NPs was equivalent to 14.962 ± 7.890 μg/ml gallic acid and the total amount of flavonoid component was found to be equal to 28.9986 ± 0.204 μg/ml quercetin. Hibiscus sabdariffa mediated green synthesized Pt–Pd NPs was found to have very effective for lipid peroxidation inhibition activity in the FeCl2–H2O2 system. The maximum DPPH scavenging activity was determined as 97.35% at 200 μg/ml. The photocatalytic activity of Pt–Pd NPs was analysed against Methylene blue (MB) and the maximum degradation percentage was observed to be 83.46% at 180 min. ConclusionsThe biogenic Pt–Pd NPs showed a high effective photocatalytic and biological activity.

Photoluminescence based humidity sensing characteristics of potassium doped magnesium ferrite nanoparticles

The present study investigates the humidity sensitivity of KxMg1-xFe2O4 (x = 0.00, x = 0.05, x = 0.10, and x = 0.15) samples prepared by sol–gel reaction of inorganic precursors. The ferrite samples were calcinated at 800 °C for 3 h. Specimens prepared by this technique exhibits spinel structure by X-ray diffraction studies. Composition, crystallite size, surface area, and porosity all have a role in the material’s humidity sensitivity, according to our findings. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) shows the distribution of nano-sized grains. The grain size grew from 32.1 nm to 71.6 nm with the substitution of potassium ions, as determined by atomic force microscope spectroscopy. From X-ray Diffraction analysis it is observed that particle size increases when K doping is introduced. The sensitivity measured through Photoluminescence technique is found to be prominence which increases with the increase in concentration of K. It is instigating that PL Sensing method is fast and sensor can be recovered rapidly.
