Isomer-resolved unimolecular dynamics of the hydroperoxyalkyl intermediate (•QOOH) in cyclohexane oxidation

The oxidation of cycloalkanes is important in the combustion of transportation fuels and in atmospheric secondary organic aerosol formation. A transient carbon-centered radical intermediate (•QOOH) in the oxidation of cyclohexane is identified through its infrared fingerprint and time- and energy-resolved unimolecular dissociation dynamics to hydroxyl (OH) radical and bicyclic ether products. Although the cyclohexyl ring structure leads to three nearly degenerate •QOOH isomers (β-, γ-, and δ-QOOH), their transition state (TS) barriers to OH products are predicted to differ considerably. Selective characterization of the β-QOOH isomer is achieved at excitation energies associated with the lowest TS barrier, resulting in rapid unimolecular decay to OH products that are detected. A benchmarking approach is employed for the calculation of high-accuracy stationary point energies, in particular TS barriers, for cyclohexane oxidation (C6H11O2), building on higher-level reference calculations for the smaller ethane oxidation (C2H5O2) system. The isomer-specific characterization of β-QOOH is validated by comparison of experimental OH product appearance rates with computed statistical microcanonical rates, including significant heavy-atom tunneling, at energies in the vicinity of the TS barrier. Master-equation modeling is utilized to extend the results to thermal unimolecular decay rate constants at temperatures and pressures relevant to cyclohexane combustion.

Reactive Oxygen Species Formation and Peroxide and Carbonyl Decomposition in Aqueous Photolysis of Secondary Organic Aerosols.

The mechanism and kinetics of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation when atmospheric secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is exposed to solar radiation are poorly understood. In this study, we combined an in situ UV-vis irradiation system with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to characterize the photolytic formation of ROS in aqueous extracts of SOA formed by the oxidation of isoprene, α-pinene, α-terpineol, and toluene. We observed substantial formation of free radicals, including •OH, superoxide (HO2•), and organic radicals (R•/RO•) upon irradiation. Compared to dark conditions, the radical yield was enhanced by a factor of ∼30 for •OH and by a factor of 2-10 for superoxide radicals, and we observed the emergence of organic radicals. Total peroxide measurements showed substantial decreases of peroxide contents after photoirradiation, indicating that organic peroxides can be an important source of the observed radicals. A liquid chromatography interfaced with high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect a number of organic radicals in the form of adducts with a spin trap, BMPO. The types of detected radicals and aqueous photolysis of model compounds indicated that photolysis of carbonyls by Norrish type I mechanisms plays an important role in the organic radical formation. The photolytic ROS formation serves as the driving force for cloud and fog processing of SOA.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation Potential from Vehicular Non-tailpipe Emissions under Real-World Driving Conditions.

Traffic emissions are a dominant source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban environments. Though tailpipe exhaust has drawn extensive attention, the impact of non-tailpipe emissions on atmospheric SOA has not been well studied. Here, a closure study was performed combining urban tunnel experiments and dynamometer tests using an oxidation flow reactor in situ photo-oxidation. Results show a significant gap between field and laboratory research; the average SOA formation potential from real-world fleet is 639 ± 156 mg kg fuel-1, higher than the reconstructed result (188 mg kg fuel-1) based on dynamometer tests coupled with fleet composition inside the tunnel. Considering the minimal variation of SOA/CO in emission standards, we also reconstruct CO and find the critical role of high-emitting events in the real-world SOA burden. Different profiles of organic gases are detected inside the tunnel than tailpipe exhaust, such as more abundant C6-C9 aromatics, C11-C16 species, and benzothiazoles, denoting contributions from non-tailpipe emissions to SOA formation. Using these surrogate chemical compounds, we roughly estimate that high-emitting, evaporative emission, and asphalt-related and tire sublimation share 14, 20, and 10% of the SOA budget, respectively, partially explaining the gap between field and laboratory research. These experimental results highlight the importance of non-tailpipe emissions to atmospheric SOA.

Barrierless reactions of C2 Criegee intermediates with H2SO4 and their implication to oligomers and new particle formation

The formation of oligomeric hydrogen peroxide triggered by Criegee intermediate maybe contributes significantly to the formation and growth of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, to date, the reactivity of C2 Criegee intermediates (CH3CHOO) in areas contaminated with acidic gas remains poorly understood. Herein, high-level quantum chemical calculations and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations are used to explore the reaction of CH3CHOO and H2SO4 both in the gas phase and at the air-water interface. In the gas phase, the addition reaction of CH3CHOO with H2SO4 to generate CH3HC(OOH)OSO3H (HPES) is near-barrierless, regardless of the presence of water molecules. BOMD simulations show that the reaction at the air-water interface is even faster than that in the gas phase. Further calculations reveal that the HPES has a tendency to aggregate with sulfuric acids, ammonias, and water molecules to form stable clusters, meanwhile the oligomerization reaction of CH3CHOO with HPES in the gas phase is both thermochemically and kinetically favored. Also, it is noted that the interfacial HPES− ion can attract H2SO4, NH3, (COOH)2 and HNO3 for particle formation from the gas phase to the water surface. Thus, the results of this work not only elucidate the high atmospheric reactivity of C2 Criegee intermediates in polluted regions, but also deepen our understanding of the formation process of atmospheric SOA induced by Criegee intermediates.

On the sources of ambient SOA in PM2.5: An integrated analysis over Jinan city of China

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) accounts for a significant fraction of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and is a crucial component that affects climate and public health. However, the formation of SOA in urban areas remains unclear and sources contributed to SOA are poorly characterized. In this study, we combined ambient measurements and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system to investigate the evolution of SOA during winter over Jinan city in China. Relative contributions of different anthropogenic sources to ambient SOA were subsequently probed by the Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM) to explore the impact of anthropogenic emissions. The mean concentration of SOA was 11.2 μg m−3, accounting for 29.4% in PM2.5, and SOA concentrations on clean days (4.9 μg m−3) increased by 4.8 times on polluted days (23.3 μg m−3), and strong correlation between the elevated PM2.5 episodes and increased SOA concentrations was found (R2 > 0.5). In addition, SOA concentrations and the proportion of SOA in PM2.5 were higher during the daytime (24.9 μg m−3, 32.4%) compared to nighttime (21.9 μg m−3, 25.1%) on polluted days, which is primarily attributed to the intense atmospheric photochemical reactions and anthropogenic activities. Mobile sources act as the dominant contributor to SOA (57.6%) and road diesel emissions (30.9%) made the largest contribution to SOA, followed by non-road mobile sources (17.4%) among subsectors in mobile sources. This study sheds new insights into ambient SOA formation and SOA source apportionment for typical megacities in China, guiding the design of source-oriented regulation efforts on SOA mitigation.

Effects of isoprene on the ozonolysis of Δ3-carene and β-caryophyllene: Mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol formation and cross-dimerization

Elucidating the mutual effects between the different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial for comprehending the formation mechanism of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Here, the mixed VOCs experiments of isoprene and Δ3-carene/β-caryophyllene were carried out in the presence of O3 using an indoor smog chamber. The suppression effect of isoprene was recognized by the scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, online vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations. The results indicate that the suppression effect of isoprene on the ozonolysis of Δ3-carene and β-caryophyllene shows fluctuating and monotonous trends, respectively. The carbon content of the precursor could be the main factor for regulating the strength of the suppression effect. Plausible structures and formation mechanisms of several new products generated from the single VOC precursor and VOC-cross-reaction are proposed, which enrich the category of VOC oxidation products. Meanwhile, a new dimerization mechanism of the RO2 + R'O2 reaction is suggested, which offers an intriguing perspective on the gas phase formation process of particle phase accretion products. The present findings provide valuable insights into clarifying the pivotal roles played by isoprene in the interplay between different VOCs and understanding of SOA formation mechanisms of VOC mixtures, especially nearby the emission origins.

Particle-phase accretion forms dimer esters in pinene secondary organic aerosol.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is ubiquitous in the atmosphere and plays a pivotal role in climate, air quality, and health. The production of low-volatility dimeric compounds through accretion reactions is a key aspect of SOA formation. However, despite extensive study, the structures and thus the formation mechanisms of dimers in SOA remain largely uncharacterized. In this work, we elucidate the structures of several major dimer esters in SOA from ozonolysis of α-pinene and β-pinene-substantial global SOA sources-through independent synthesis of authentic standards. We show that these dimer esters are formed in the particle phase and propose a mechanism of nucleophilic addition of alcohols to a cyclic acylperoxyhemiacetal. This chemistry likely represents a general pathway to dimeric compounds in ambient SOA.

Unexpected moderate contribution of intermediate volatility organic compounds from gasoline vehicle emission to secondary organic aerosol formation in summer of Beijing

Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) have been proposed to be important contributors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. In this study, we characterized ambient IVOCs in Beijing and performed a comprehensive closure study of ambient SOA production using top-down (photochemical-age-based parameterization method to apportion OA) and bottom-up (estimation of SOA from detailed speciation of IVOCs and VOCs) approaches. The IVOCs in Beijing were more oxidized and had a high abundance (62.5 ± 45.2 μg m−3), significantly higher than in the US. Unlike the US, the IVOCs in Beijing shows a hybrid characteristic of gasoline and vehicle exhausts and are influenced by complicated sources. A ∼ 80% SOA mass closure could be reached between the top-down and bottom-up methods, in which IVOCs was the dominant contributor (75.5%). Furthermore, we established a parametric method (SOA/CO vs. photochemical age) to estimate the contribution of vehicular SOA to ambient OA. Unexpectedly, the contributions of gasoline vehicles to ambient OA are only 7.3% for POA and 13.0% for SOA. Our results imply that IVOCs from other sources, e.g., diesel vehicles and cooking emissions, may be important precursors to secondary organic aerosol in Beijing. In addition, this study highlights the importance of comprehensively performing the molecular identification of IVOCs from different emissions in China. Plain language summarySecondary organic aerosol (SOA), formed by multigenerational oxidation of gas-phase compounds, represents a significant fraction of organic aerosol. However, current models often underestimate the measured SOA mass. One of the ubiquitous reasons is the missing measurement of the intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs). Here we quantified and qualified the IVOCs in Beijing and performed a comprehensive SOA study using bottom-up and top-down methods. Besides, we estimate the SOA formation by gasoline vehicles. Marked impacts of transient conditions on potential secondary organic aerosol production during rapid oxidation of gasoline exhausts

Vehicle emission is a major source of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Driving condition is a critical influencing factor for vehicular SOA production, but few studies have revealed the dependence on rapid-changing real-world driving conditions. Here, a fast-response oxidation flow reactor system is developed and deployed to quantify the SOA formation potential under transient driving conditions. Results show that the SOA production factor varies by orders of magnitude, e.g., 20–1500 mg kg-fuel−1 and 12–155 mg kg-fuel−1 for China V and China VI vehicles, respectively. High speed, acceleration, and deceleration are found to considerably promote SOA production due to higher organic gaseous emissions caused by unburned fuel emission or incomplete combustion. In addition, China VI vehicles significantly reduce SOA formation potential, yield, and acceleration and deceleration peaks. Our study provides experimental insight and parameterization into vehicular SOA formation under transient driving conditions, which would benefit high time-resolved SOA simulations in the urban atmosphere.

Identification and quantification of IEPOX in ambient aerosols, using electron and chemical ionization sources GC/MS as their trimethylsilyl ethers, and using H-NMR

Isoprene is the most abundant non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) emitted by vegetation, and the precursor that makes the greatest contribution to secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the troposphere. Atmospheric oxidation of isoprene produces a series of reactive intermediates, isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX). The reactive uptake of IEPOX is the significant formation pathway of atmospheric SOA. In this work, four isomers of IEPOX were synthesized, derivatized by silylation reagents, and measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The electron-impact (EI) and methane chemical ionization (CI) sources mass spectra of trimethylsilyl ester (TMS) derivatives of IEPOX isomers were obtained and the fragmentation behaviors of the derivatives were examined. Moreover, the hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) spectra of IEPOX isomers were also obtained and the peak intensities in the H-NMR spectra were analyzed. Based on the standard spectra, IEPOX isomers were identified in ambient PM2.5 aerosols in the Gongga Mountain (China). The peak sequence of TMS derivatives of IEPOX isomers in GC/MS chromatogram was δ4-IEPOX, δ1-IEPOX, cis-β-IEPOX and trans-β-IEPOX. The isomers with the highest concentrations were δ1-IEPOX (threo- and erythro-). The mass ratios of IEPOX to 2-methyltetrols were 0.02–6.0 and the concentrations of IEPOX were 0.8–41.6 ng/m3 in the PM2.5 aerosols. The current study verified the core roles of IEPOX as active intermediates in photo oxidation of isoprene in ambient atmosphere.

Modeling of wintertime regional formation of secondary organic aerosols around Beijing: sensitivity analysis and anthropogenic contributions

Modeling of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) has remained a big challenge due to the various precursors and complex processes involved. In this study, the WRF-CAMx model was used to predict the ambient SOA concentrations in urban Beijing as well as the North China Plain (NCP) during a polluted period in winter. To identify the major uncertainties and improve the model performance, a series of model tests were performed to assess the sensitivity of model prediction to the key factors. Then the sources of SOA in Beijing were identified using the optimized model. Both the volatility basis set (VBS) approach and the two-product approach were used for SOA simulation. Although the modeled SOA was underpredicted compared with the SOA estimated through filter-based measurements, the VBS scheme produced higher SOA than the traditional two-product scheme. According to the sensitivity tests with the VBS scheme, the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOC) as well as the oxidant levels were the key factors that affected SOA prediction. Based on the optimized simulation scenario, the potential contributions from different anthropogenic sources and source areas were identified, with over 80% of SOA in urban Beijing from regional transport of SOA or its precursors from the surrounding areas during the polluted period. Comparison of the Yield and Chemical Composition of Secondary Organic Aerosol Generated from the OH and Cl Oxidation of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane

Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) that are emitted from industrial processes and consumer products often dominate the burden of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in occupied spaces. cVMS may contribute to oxygenated VOC and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation following oxidation by gas-phase radicals in both indoor and outdoor source regions. Several recent studies examined the SOA formation potential of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) following exposure to hydroxyl radicals (OH) and found that this reaction generates SOA in high yield following multiple days of oxidative aging. Chlorine atoms (Cl) may compete with OH for the oxidative loss of D5 in indoor and outdoor source regions with active chlorine chemistry, but the SOA formation potential of D5 + Cl reactions has not been studied. Here, we characterized the yield and chemical composition of SOA generated from Cl oxidation of D5 in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) under dry [relative humidity (RH) < 5%] and humid (RH = 40%) conditions and compared results to the yield and composition of SOA generated from OH oxidation of D5. D5 was oxidized using integrated OH and Cl exposures (OHexp and Clexp) ranging from 1.1 × 1012 to 8.2 × 1012 cm–3 s and from 1.6 × 1010 to 1.6 × 1012 cm–3 s, respectively. Like OH, Cl facilitated multistep SOA oxidative aging over the range of OFR conditions that were studied, with maximum SOA mass yields of 1.5 and 1.3 obtained following OH and Cl oxidation of D5 under humid conditions. These results suggest that indoor and outdoor source regions that are significantly influenced by chlorine chemistry may enhance the atmospheric SOA formation potential of D5.

Kinetics of oligomer-forming reactions involving the major functional groups present in atmospheric secondary organic aerosol particles.

Atmospheric organic aerosol particles impact climate as well as human and environmental health. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA), which is formed by the gas-to-particle partitioning of products of the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from biogenic or anthropogenic sources, contributes a large fraction of this material. In the particle phase, these products can undergo accretion reactions to form oligomers that impact the formation, composition, and chemical-physical properties of aerosols. While these reactions are known to occur in the atmosphere, data and models describing their kinetics and equilibria are sparse. Here, reactions of compounds containing potentially reactive hydroperoxide, hydroxyl, carboxyl, aldehyde, and ketone groups were investigated in single and phase-separated organic/aqueous mixtures in the absence and presence of a sulfuric acid catalyst. Compounds containing these groups and a nonreactive UV-absorbing nitrate group were synthesized and their reactions and products were monitored and characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Reactions were observed between hydroperoxides and aldehydes to form peroxyhemiacetals, and between carboxylic acids and alcohols to form esters, and their rate and equilibrium constants were determined. No reactions were observed in other mixtures, indicating that under the conditions of these experiments only a few reaction pathways form oligomers. Reactions were also conducted with probe compounds and SOA formed in an environmental chamber reaction of α-pinene with O3. Whereas in a previous study we observed a rapid hydroperoxide reaction in this SOA, among the other compounds studied here only alcohols reacted. These results provide insight into the types of accretion reactions that are likely to occur in atmospheric aerosols, and the rate and equilibrium constants can be used to better model SOA chemistry.

Diversity of organic components in airborne waste discharged from sewer pipe repairs.

Air-discharged waste from commonly used trenchless technologies of sewer pipe repairs is an emerging and poorly characterized source of urban pollution. This study reports on the molecular-level characterization of the atmospherically discharged aqueous-phase waste condensate samples collected at four field sites of the sewer pipe repairs. The molecular composition of organic species in these samples was investigated using reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector and a high-resolution mass spectrometer equipped with interchangeable atmospheric pressure photoionization and electrospray ionization sources. The waste condensate components comprise a complex mixture of organic species that can partition between gas-, aqueous-, and solid-phases when water evaporates from the air-discharged waste. Identified organic species have broad variability in molecular weight, molecular structures, and carbon oxidation state, which also varied between the waste samples. All condensates contained complex mixtures of oxidized organics, N- and S-containing organics, condensed aromatics, and their functionalized derivatives that are directly released to the atmospheric environment during installations. Furthermore, semi-volatile, low volatility, and extremely low volatility organic compounds comprise 75-85% of the total compounds identified in the waste condensates. Estimates of the component-specific viscosities suggest that upon evaporation of water waste material would form the semi-solid and solid phases. The low volatilities and high viscosities of chemical components in these waste condensates will contribute to the formation of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols and atmospheric solid nanoplastic particles. Lastly, selected components expected in the condensates were quantified and found to be present at high concentrations (1-20 mg L-1) that may exceed regulatory limits.

Secondary organic aerosol formation in China from urban-lifestyle sources: Vehicle exhaust and cooking emission.

An increasing number of people tend to live in cities, where they suffer from serious air pollution from anthropogenic sources. Vehicle exhaust and cooking emission are closely related to daily life of urban residents, and could be defined as "urban-lifestyle sources". The primary emissions of urban-lifestyle sources tend to form abundant secondary organic aerosols (SOA) through complicated atmospheric chemistry processes. The newly formed SOA is a kind of complex mixture and causes considerable health effects with high uncertainty. Most studies focus on formation pathway, mass growth potential and chemical feature of urban-lifestyle SOA under simple laboratory conditions. Few studies have measured the urban-lifestyle SOA in ambient air, let alone verified laboratory findings under complicated atmospheric conditions. In this work, we established a new method that combined laboratory simulation and field observation, which quantified the urban-lifestyle SOA with high time resolution under the real atmospheric condition. The complex SOA was measured and resolved by a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). The multilinear engine model (ME-2) and multilinear correction methods were used to apply laboratory results into ambient SOA apportionment. It was found that the vehicle source dominated the SOA formation during the diurnal photochemical process, and the SOA:POA ratio of vehicle source was about 1.4 times larger than that of cooking source. The vehicle emission may undergo an alcohol/peroxide & carboxylic acid oxidation pathway and form higher oxidized SOA, while the cooking emission may undergo an alcohol/peroxide oxidation pathway and form relatively lower oxidized SOA. The vehicle SOA and cooking SOA contributed 45.6 % and 24.8 % of OA during a local episode in 2021 winter of downtown Beijing. Our findings could not only provide a new way to quantify urban SOA but also demonstrate some laboratory hypotheses, conducing to understand its ambient contributions, chemical features, and environmental effects.

Kinetics Study of Acid-Catalyzed Sulfate Esterification Reactions for Atmospherically Relevant Polyols

Extensive laboratory and field studies have identified organosulfates as important constituents of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, the mechanisms by which these organosulfates form in the atmosphere remain uncertain. The rate constants for the acid-catalyzed sulfate esterification reactions of a series of polyols were measured via bulk kinetics experiments using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The NMR data indicated that while reactions that occurred at a terminal hydroxyl site were somewhat faster than reactions at internal hydroxyl sites, there were no other significant structure–reactivity trends among the series of polyols. These results suggest that neighboring hydroxyl groups do not significantly modify the sulfate esterification rates from those previously determined for monoalcohols. Extrapolation of the kinetics data to typical atmospheric SOA acidities suggests that sulfate esterification reactions of polyols are unlikely to be a significant source of organosulfates. This conclusion is consistent with a previous study of monoalcohols which made similar conclusions about the kinetic infeasibility of this reaction type.

Mobile Sources Are Still an Important Source of Secondary Organic Aerosol and Fine Particulate Matter in the Los Angeles Region.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is a significant component of atmospheric fine particulate matter. Mobile sources have historically been a major source of SOA precursors in urban environments, but decades of regulations have reduced their emissions. Less regulated sources, such as volatile chemical products (VCPs), are of growing importance. We analyzed ambient and emissions data to assess the contribution of mobile sources to SOA formation in Los Angeles during the period of 2009-2019. During this period, air quality in the Los Angeles region has improved, but organic aerosol (OA) concentrations did not decrease as much as primary pollutants. This appears to be largely due to SOA, whose mass fraction in OA increased over this period. In 2010, about half of the freshly formed SOA measured in Pasadena, CA appears to be formed from hydrocarbon (non-oxygenated) precursors. Chemical mass balance analysis indicates that these hydrocarbon SOA precursors (including intermediate volatility organic compounds) can largely be explained by emissions from mobile sources in 2010. Our analysis indicates that continued reduction in emissions from mobile sources should lead to additional significant decreases in atmospheric SOA and PM2.5 mass in the Los Angeles region.

Intermediate‐Volatility Organic Compounds Observed in a Coastal Megacity: Importance of Non‐Road Source Emissions

AbstractIntermediate‐volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) are among the most important precursors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA), yet their sources and contributions to SOA in ambient air are poorly constrained. In this study, IVOCs were collected with sorption tubes in a coastal city in southern China during September–October 2019 and were analyzed by gas chromatography‐mass selective detector after thermo‐desorption. The measured average concentration of IVOCs was 25.0 ± 0.95 μg m−3 (mean ± 95% C.I.), and residual unresolved complex mixtures shared 79.8% ± 1.91% of IVOCs. The estimated SOA production, even only from speciated IVOCs and unspeciated branch‐alkane IVOCs, reached 2.44 ± 1.46 μg m−3, approximately five times that from VOCs during the photochemically active period (12:00–15:00 local time). Based on the positive matrix factorization model with a photochemical‐age‐based parameterization, diesel‐related emission was the largest contributor (46.6%) of IVOCs, followed by ship emission (23.0%), gasoline exhaust (16.8%), and biomass/coal burning (13.6%). Non‐road diesel engines accounted for a dominant part in diesel‐related emission. Ship emission was found to contribute SOA formation potentials (SOAFPs) comparable to that of diesel‐related emission, while biomass/coal burning showed higher SOAFPs than gasoline exhaust. Our results revealed that non‐road sources, such as ship emission, non‐road diesel engines, and biomass/coal burning contributed substantially to IVOCs, and will be of greater importance in producing ambient SOA with the increasingly stringent control on emissions from on‐road vehicles.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation Regulates Cloud Condensation Nuclei in the Global Remote Troposphere

AbstractFormation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) through the atmospheric oxidation of organic vapors has potential to enable particle growth to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN)‐relevant sizes. In this work, we constrain a global aerosol model by using aircraft measurements to reveal the global importance of SOA formation in CCN production. Our improved model, with explicit size‐resolved aerosol microphysics and parametrizations of semivolatile organic oxidation products, presents a state‐of‐the‐art performance in simulating both particle number concentrations and organic aerosol concentrations dominated (80–95%) by SOA in the remote atmosphere, which have been challenges in previous modeling studies. The SOA formation in concert with aerosol nucleation contributes to more than 50% of CCN concentrations in those pristine environments featuring low background aerosol concentrations. We estimate that the SOA‐derived CCN alters the magnitude of cloud radiative forcing by ∼0.1 W m−2. Our findings underscore the necessity for aerosol‐climate models to represent controls on CCN concentrations by SOA production.

Atmospheric fine particulate dicarboxylic acids and related SOA in winter at the background site of Yangtze River Delta: Implication for the long-distance transport of solid fuels burning

To identify the pollution characteristics of dicarboxylic acids in the background of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) during winter, diurnal PM2.5 samples were collected in Chongming Island, a background site of YRD nearby Shanghai and determined for organic compounds including dicarboxylic acids, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), levoglucosan, and related inorganic ions. The total concentration of dicarboxylic acid organics was 433 ± 70 ng/m3, of which oxalic acid was the most abundant species, followed by phthalic acid (Ph), succinic acid (C4), and malonic acid (C3). Four typical pollution events occurred during the campaign (defined as Event 1, Event 2, Event 3, and Event 4) were identified. The organic matters in Event 1 and Event 2 mainly came from the transport of coal burning emissions derived from northern China with space heating such as Inner Mongolia and Shandong, while those in Event 3 and Event 4 periods came from the long distance transport of biomass burning in Anhui and Henan provinces. We found that aqueous phase oxidation, instead of gaseous phase oxidation, dominated the formation of dicarboxylic acids in the region. The dicarboxylic acids followed a mono-modal size distribution pattern in winter, obviously different from that in summer, mainly due to the dominant aerosol aqueous phase formation and the weak volatilization in winter with low ambient temperature. The result obtained by this study was expected to provide novel insight of source, pollution characteristics, and formation mechanism of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the background of YRD and benefit the pollutants control policy formulation.
