Ether and ester formation from peroxy radical recombination: a qualitative reaction channel analysis

Abstract. The least volatile organic compounds participating in atmospheric new-particle formation are very likely accretion products from self- and cross-reactions of peroxy radicals (RO2). It has long been assumed that the only possible accretion product channel in this reaction is that forming a peroxide (RO2+RO2→ROOR+O2), but it has recently been discovered that a rapid alkoxy radical (RO) decomposition may precede the accretion step of the mechanism, forming slightly fragmented but more stable ether (ROR) or ester (RC′(O)OR) accretion products. In this work, the atmospheric implications of this new reaction channel have been explored further by using a modified version of the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A) software to generate a large amount of representative RO2 + RO2 reactive pairs formed from the oxidation of typical primary hydrocarbons and by applying structure–activity relationships (SARs) to predict the potential accretion products. These data are analysed in terms of the formation of low-volatility products, and new discoveries are presented on what types of RO2 are especially efficient (and which are surprisingly inefficient) at forming accretion products. These findings are discussed in terms of the atmospheric relevance of these new RO2 + RO2 reaction channels. As the generation of these data rests on several simplifications and assumptions, many open questions worthy of later studies are also raised.

Indoor Emission, Oxidation, and New Particle Formation of Personal Care Product Related Volatile Organic Compounds.

Personal care products (PCPs) contain diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and routine use of PCPs indoors has important implications for indoor air quality and human chemical exposures. This chamber study deployed aerosol instrumentation and two online mass spectrometers to quantify VOC emissions from the indoor use of five fragranced PCPs and examined the formation of gas-phase oxidation products and particles upon ozone-initiated oxidation of reactive VOCs. The tested PCPs include a perfume, a roll-on deodorant, a body spray, a hair spray, and a hand lotion. Indoor use of these PCPs emitted over 200 VOCs and resulted in indoor VOC mixing ratios of several parts per million. The VOC emission factors for the PCPs varied from 2 to 964 mg g-1. We identified strong emissions of terpenes and their derivatives, which are likely used as fragrant additives in the PCPs. When using the PCPs in the presence of indoor ozone, these reactive VOCs underwent oxidation reactions to form a variety of gas-phase oxidized vapors and led to rapid new particle formation (NPF) events with particle growth rates up to ten times higher than outdoor atmospheric NPF events. The resulting ultrafine particle concentrations reach ∼34000 to ∼200000 cm-3 during the NPF events.

A Surprisingly High Enhancing Potential of Nitric Acid in Sulfuric Acid–Methylamine Nucleation

Nitric acid (NA) has recently been found to enhance sulfuric acid (SA)-driven new particle formation (NPF) at low temperatures (≤240 K). However, studies on the role of NA in atmospheric NPF remain limited. Herein, we explored the enhancement effect of NA on binary SA–methylamine (MA) nucleation by investigating the mechanism and kinetics of (NA)x(SA)y(MA)z (0 ≤ x, 0 ≤ y, x + y ≤ 3, 0 ≤ z ≤ 3) clusters using quantum chemical calculations and cluster dynamics simulations. We found that the mixed ternary NA-SA-MA clusters have lower evaporation rates compared to the corresponding NA-SA–dimethylamine (DMA) and NA-SA–ammonia (A) clusters, indicating the stronger binding ability of NA with respect to SA-MA clusters. At atmospheric conditions (T ≥ 278.15 K), NA can enhance the cluster formation rate of SA-MA by about six orders of magnitude, demonstrating a surprisingly high enhancing potential. Moreover, NA acts as an important participant in the cluster growth pathways of the NA-SA-MA system, as opposed to the “bridging” role of NA in the previously studied NA-SA-A system. This study proposes the first case of NA efficiently enhancing SA–amine nucleation at ambient temperature, suggesting a larger impact of NA in atmospheric NPF than previously expected.

Opinion: A paradigm shift in investigating the general characteristics of atmospheric new particle formation using field observations

Abstract. Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) and associated production of secondary particulate matter dominate aerosol particle number concentrations and submicron particle mass loadings in many environments globally. Our recent investigations show that atmospheric NPF produces a significant amount of particles on days when no clear NPF event has been observed/identified. Furthermore, it has been observed in different environments all around the world that growth rates of nucleation mode particles vary little, usually much less than the measured concentrations of condensable vapors. It has also been observed that the local clustering, which in many cases acts as a starting point of regional new particle formation (NPF), can be described with the formation of intermediate ions at the smallest sizes. These observations, together with a recently developed ranking method, lead us to propose a paradigm shift in atmospheric NPF investigations. In this opinion paper, we will summarize the traditional approach of describing atmospheric NPF and describe an alternative method, covering both particle formation and initial growth. The opportunities and remaining challenges offered by the new approach are discussed.

Organosulfate produced from consumption of SO3 speeds up sulfuric acid–dimethylamine atmospheric nucleation

Abstract. Although sulfuric acid (SA) and dimethylamine (DMA)-driven nucleation mainly dominates the new particle formation (NPF) process in the atmosphere, seeking the involvement of other gaseous species remains crucial for a better understanding of the NPF. Organosulfate has been detected in the gas phase and abundantly in atmospheric fine particles. However, its molecular formation mechanism and its impact on the NPF are still much less understood. Here, we explored the gas-phase reaction of glycolic acid (GA) with SO3 and evaluated the enhancing potential of its products on the SA–DMA-driven NPF using a combination of quantum chemical calculations and kinetics modeling. We found that the considerable concentration of glycolic acid sulfate (GAS) is thermodynamically accessible from the reaction of GA with SO3, efficiently catalyzed by SA or H2O molecules. The produced GAS can form stable clusters with SA and DMA and speeds up the nucleation rate of the SA–DMA system obviously. Notably, the enhancement by GAS in the SA–DMA-based particle formation rate can be up to ∼ 800 times in the region where the concentration of SA is about 104 molec. cm−3. Supported by observations of atmospheric NPF events at Mt. Tai in China, our proposed ternary GAS–SA–DMA nucleation mechanism further indicates that the organosulfates produced from the consumption of SO3 may play an important role in the unexpected high NPF rates observed in areas with relatively low concentrations of SA. The presented reaction and nucleation mechanisms provide a new feasible source of organosulfates in atmospheric new particles. Based on our findings, the impact of organosulfates on the atmospheric NPF in multiple regions around the world was estimated and discussed.

Significant spatial gradients in new particle formation frequency in Greece during summer

Abstract. Extensive continuous particle number size distribution measurements took place during two summers (2020 and 2021) at 11 sites in Greece for the investigation of the frequency and the spatial extent of new particle formation (NPF). The study area is characterized by high solar intensity and fast photochemistry and has moderate to low fine particulate matter levels during the summer. The average PM2.5 levels were relatively uniform across the examined sites. The NPF frequency during summer varied from close to zero in the southwestern parts of Greece to more than 60 % in the northern, central, and eastern regions. The mean particle growth rate for each station varied between 3.4 and 8 nm h−1, with an average rate of 5.7 nm h−1. At most of the sites there was no statistical difference in the condensation sink between NPF event and non-event days, while lower relative humidity was observed during the events. The high-NPF-frequency sites in the north and northeast were in close proximity to both coal-fired power plants (high emissions of SO2) and agricultural areas with some of the highest ammonia emissions in the country. The southern and western parts of Greece, where NPF was infrequent, were characterized by low ammonia emissions, while moderate levels of sulfuric acid were estimated (107 molec. cm−3) in the west. Although the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds were higher in western and southern sectors, they did not appear to lead to enhanced frequency of NPF. The infrequent events at these sites occurred when the air masses had spent a few hours over areas with agricultural activities and thus elevated ammonia emissions. Air masses arriving at the sites directly from the sea were not connected with atmospheric NPF. These results support the hypothesis that ammonia and/or amines limit new particle formation in the study area.

Dynamics of collisions and uptake of alcohol molecules with hydrated nitric acid clusters.

We investigate the collisions of different alcohol molecules with hydrated nitric acid clusters using a molecular beam experiment and molecular dynamics simulations. The uptake cross sections σp for the molecules evaluated from the experiment are in excellent agreement with the simulations. This suggests that (i) the nontrivial assumptions implemented in the evaluation procedure of the experimental data are valid, and (ii) the simulations describe correctly the major processes in the molecule-cluster collisions. We observe that σp decreases with the increasing alkyl chain length of the alcohol, and also with the branching of the molecules that have the same mass but different structures. These systematic trends can be rationalized based on the accessibility of the hydrophilic OH group, which decreases with the increasing chain length and steric hindrance. The observed trends and their interpretation differ significantly from the simple model of hard-sphere collisions. The obtained data shall be beneficial not only for the fundamental understanding of the molecule-cluster collisions, but also in the modelling of atmospheric new-particle formation and aerosol growth.

Nanoparticle ranking analysis: determining new particle formation (NPF) event occurrence and intensity based on the concentration spectrum of formed (sub-5 nm) particles

Abstract. Here we introduce a new method, termed “nanoparticle ranking analysis”, for characterizing new particle formation (NPF) from atmospheric observations. Using daily variations of the particle number concentration at sizes immediately above the continuous mode of molecular clusters, here in practice 2.5–5 nm (i.e. ΔN2.5−5), we can determine the occurrence probability and estimate the strength of atmospheric NPF events. After determining the value of ΔN2.5−5 for all the days during a period under consideration, the next step of the analysis is to rank the days based on this simple metric. The analysis is completed by grouping the days either into a number of percentile intervals based on their ranking or into a few modes in the distribution of log (ΔN2.5−5) values. Using 5 years (2018–2022) of data from the SMEAR II station in Hyytiälä, Finland, we found that the days with higher (lower) ranking values had, on average, both higher (lower) probability of NPF events and higher (lower) particle formation rates. The new method provides probabilistic information about the occurrence and intensity of NPF events and is expected to serve as a valuable tool to define the origin of newly formed particles at many types of environments that are affected by multiple sources of aerosol precursors.

Measurement Report: Wintertime new particle formation in the rural area of the North China Plain – influencing factors and possible formation mechanism

Abstract. The high concentration of fine particles and gaseous pollutants makes polluted areas, such as the urban setting of North China Plain (NCP) of China, a different environment for new particle formation (NPF) compared to many clean regions. Such conditions also hold for other polluted environments in this region (for instance, the rural area of NCP), yet the underlying mechanisms for NPF remain less understood, owing to the limited observations of particles in the sub−3 nm range. Comprehensive measurements, particularly covering the particle number size distribution down to 1.3 nm, were conducted at a rural background site of Gucheng (GC) in the North China Plain (NCP) from 12 November to 24 December 2018. In total, five NPF events during the 39 effective days of measurements for the campaign were identified, with the mean particle nucleation rate (J1.3) and growth rate (GR1.3–2.4) being 22.0 cm−3 s−1 and 3.9 nm h−1, respectively. During these 5 d, NPF concurrently occurred at an urban site in Beijing. Sharing similar sources and transport paths of air masses arriving at our site to that of urban Beijing, we hypothesize that NPF events during these days in this region might be a regional phenomenon. The simultaneous occurrence of NPF in both places implies that H2SO4-amine nucleation, concluded for urban Beijing there, could probably be the dominating mechanism for NPF at our rural site. The higher concentration of sulfuric acid during many non-event days compared to that of event days indicates that the content of sulfuric acid may not necessarily lead to NPF events under current atmosphere. Only when the condensation sink or coagulation sink was significantly lowered, atmospheric NPF occurred, implying that condensation sinks (CSs) and coagulation sinks (CoagSs) are the dominating factors controlling the occurrence of NPF for the present rural environment of the NCP, which is quite similar to the feature seen in urban Beijing.

Measurement report: Atmospheric new particle formation at a peri-urban site in Lille, northern France

Abstract. Formation of ultrafine particles (UFPs) in the urban atmosphere is expected to be less favored than in the rural atmosphere due to the high existing particle surface area acting as a sink for newly formed particles. Despite large condensation sink (CS) values, previous comparative studies between rural and urban sites reported higher frequency of new particle formation (NPF) events over urban sites in comparison to background sites as well as higher particle formation and growth rates attributed to the higher concentration of condensable species. The present study aims at a better understanding the environmental factors favoring, or disfavoring, atmospheric NPF over Lille, a large city in the north of France, and to analyze their impact on particle number concentration using a 4-year long-term dataset. The results highlight a strong seasonal variation of NPF occurrences with a maximum frequency observed during spring (27 events) and summer (53 events). It was found that high temperature (T>295 K), low relative humidity (RH <45 %), and high solar radiation are ideal to observe NPF events over Lille. Relatively high CS values (i.e., ∼2×10-2 s−1) are reported during event days suggesting that high CS does not inhibit the occurrence of NPF over the ATmospheric Observations in LiLLE (ATOLL) station. Moreover, the particle growth rate was positively correlated with temperatures most probably due to higher emission of precursors. Finally, the nucleation strength factor (NSF) was calculated to highlight the impact of those NPF events on particle number concentrations. NSF reached a maximum of four in summer, evidencing a huge contribution of NPF events to particle number concentration at this time of the year.

Enhancing acid-base-water ternary aerosol nucleation with organic acid: a case of tartaric acid.

The new particle formation (NPF) process has been observed globally in clean and polluted environments, where the fundamental mechanisms leading to multicomponent aerosol formation remain elusive. Dicarboxylic acids play an important role in atmospheric NPF. In this study, theoretical calculations are performed to assess the effect of tartaric acid (TA) on the formation of clusters consisting of sulfuric acid (SA), ammonia (AM) or amines (methylamine or dimethylamine, MA/DMA) in the presence of water. Both carboxyl groups and hydroxyl groups in the carbon chain of TA could be involved in hydrogen bonds. The presence of TA triggers proton transfer from SA to the base molecule to form new covalent bonds or strengthens the preexisting covalent bonds, hence, all the hydrated (SA)(TA)(base) cluster formations by adding one TA molecule to the (SA)(base) hydrates are energetically favorable. The dipole-dipole interaction is not only related to the Gibbs energy change for acid affinity reactions to (SA)(W)n and (SA)(base)(W)n (n = 0-4) clusters but also positively related to the reaction rate constant. These results combined with preliminary kinetic results indicate that TA is very likely to participate in clustering and promote subsequent growth involving hydrated SA and (SA)(base) clusters. In addition, our results further indicate that the NPF process can be promoted by multicomponent nucleation involving organic acids, SA, and base species, which will help in understanding NPF in polluted areas and improving global and regional models.

Contribution of Methanesulfonic Acid to the Formation of Molecular Clusters in the Marine Atmosphere.

Because of the lack of long-term measurements, new particle formation (NPF) in the marine atmosphere remains puzzling. Using quantum chemical methods, this study elucidates the cluster formation and further growth of sulfuric acid-methanesulfonic acid-dimethylamine (SA-MSA-DMA) clusters, relevant to NPF in the marine atmosphere. The cluster structures and thermochemical parameters of (SA)n(MSA)m(DMA)l (n + m ≤ 4 and l ≤ 4) systems are calculated using density functional theory at the ωB97X-D/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory, and the single-point energies are calculated using high-level DLPNO-CCSD(T0)/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations. The calculated thermochemistry is used as input to the Atmospheric Cluster Dynamics Code (ACDC) to gain insight into the cluster dynamics. At ambient conditions (298.15 K, 1 atm), we find that the distribution of outgrowing clusters primarily consists of SA and DMA, with a minor contribution from the mixed SA-MSA-DMA clusters. At lower temperature (278.15 K, 1 atm) the distribution broadens, and clusters containing one or more MSA molecules emerge. These findings show that in the cold marine atmosphere MSA likely participates in atmospheric NPF.

Role of gas–molecular cluster–aerosol dynamics in atmospheric new-particle formation

New-particle formation from vapors through molecular cluster formation is a central process affecting atmospheric aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei numbers, and a significant source of uncertainty in assessments of aerosol radiative forcing. While advances in experimental and computational methods provide improved assessments of particle formation rates from different species, the standard approach to implement these data in aerosol models rests on highly simplifying assumptions concerning gas–cluster–aerosol dynamics. To quantify the effects of the simplifications, we develop an open-source tool for explicitly simulating the dynamics of the complete particle size spectrum from vapor molecules and molecular clusters to larger aerosols for multi-compound new-particle formation. We demonstrate that the simplified treatment is a reasonable approximation for particle formation from weakly clustering chemical compounds, but results in overprediction of particle numbers and of the contribution of new-particle formation to cloud condensation nuclei for strongly clustering, low-concentration trace gases. The new explicit approach circumvents these issues, thus enabling robust model–measurement comparisons, improved assessment of the importance of different particle formation agents, and construction of optimal simplifications for large-scale models.

Estimation of sulfuric acid concentration using ambient ion composition and concentration data obtained with atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight ion mass spectrometer

Abstract. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4, SA) is the key compound in atmospheric new particle formation. Therefore, it is crucial to observe its concentration with sensitive instrumentation, such as chemical ionisation (CI) inlets coupled to atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight (APi-TOF) mass spectrometers. However, there are environmental conditions for which and physical reasons why chemical ionisation cannot be used, for example in certain remote places or during flight measurements with limitations regarding chemicals. Here, we propose a theoretical method to estimate the SA concentration based on ambient ion composition and concentration measurements that are achieved by APi-TOF alone. We derive a theoretical expression to estimate the SA concentration and validate it with accurate CI-APi-TOF observations. Our validation shows that the developed estimate works well during daytime in a boreal forest (R2=0.85); however, it underestimates the SA concentration in, e.g. the Antarctic atmosphere during new particle formation events where the dominating pathway for nucleation involves sulfuric acid and a base (R2=0.48).

Contribution of traffic-originated nanoparticle emissions to regional and local aerosol levels

Abstract. Sub-50 nm particles originating from traffic emissions pose risks to human health due to their high lung deposition efficiency and potentially harmful chemical composition. We present a modeling study using an updated European Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions (EUCAARI) number emission inventory, incorporating a more realistic, empirically justified particle size distribution (PSD) for sub-50 nm particles from road traffic as compared with the previous version. We present experimental PSDs and CO2 concentrations, measured in a highly trafficked street canyon in Helsinki, Finland, as an emission factor particle size distribution (EFPSD), which was then used in updating the EUCAARI inventory. We applied the updated inventory in a simulation using the regional chemical transport model PMCAMx-UF over Europe for May 2008. This was done to test the effect of updated emissions at regional and local scales, particularly in comparison with atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). Updating the inventory increased the simulated average total particle number concentrations by only 1 %, although the total particle number emissions were increased to a 3-fold level. The concentrations increased up to 11 % when only 1.3–3 nm sized particles (nanocluster aerosol, NCA) were considered. These values indicate that the effect of updating overall is insignificant at a regional scale during this photochemically active period. During this period, the fraction of the total particle number originating from atmospheric NPF processes was 91 %; thus, these simulations give a lower limit for the contribution of traffic to the aerosol levels. Nevertheless, the situation is different when examining the effect of the update closer spatially or temporally or when focusing on the chemical composition or the origin of the particles. For example, the daily average NCA concentrations increased by a factor of several hundred or thousand in some locations on certain days. Overall, the most significant effects – reaching several orders of magnitude – from updating the inventory are observed when examining specific particle sizes (especially 7–20 nm), particle components, and specific urban areas. While the model still has a tendency to predict more sub-50 nm particles compared to the observations, the most notable underestimations in the concentrations of sub-10 nm particles are now overcome. Additionally, the simulated distributions now agree better with the data observed at locations with high traffic densities. The findings of this study highlight the need to consider emissions, PSDs, and composition of sub-50 nm particles from road traffic in studies focusing on urban air quality. Updating this emission source brings the simulated aerosol levels, particularly in urban locations, closer to observations, which highlights its importance for calculations of human exposure to nanoparticles.

A theoretical study on the formation mechanism of carboxylic sulfuric anhydride and its potential role in new particle formation.

New particle formation (NPF) is the major source of atmospheric aerosol particles. However, the chemical species involved and the exact mechanism are still unclear. Cycloaddition reaction of SO3 to carboxylic acids bas been identified as a possible formation mechanism of carboxylic sulfuric anhydrides which may be involved in NPF. Herein, energy profiles for forming diaterpenylic acetate sulfuric anhydride (DTASA) through cycloaddition of SO3 to diaterpenylic acid acetate (DTAA) and the potential role of DTASA in NPF were studied through computational methods combined with atmospheric cluster dynamics code (ACDC). Gas phase reaction barriers for the two carboxyl groups of DTAA are 0.4 and 0.6 kcal mol−1, respectively, illustrating a feasible formation mechanism for DTASA. According to thermodynamical analysis and dynamical simulations, atmospheric clusters containing DTASA and atmospheric nucleation precursors sulfuric acid (SA), ammonia (NH3) and dimethylamine (DMA) possess both thermodynamically and dynamically higher stabilities than those of DTAA-contained clusters. Furthermore, DTASA–NH3 and DTASA–DMA are more stable than SA–NH3 and SA–DMA, enabling DTASA, even carboxylic sulfuric anhydrides, to become potential participants in the atmospheric NPF process which may hence promote a better understanding of NPF.

Aerosol particle formation in the upper residual layer

Abstract. According to current estimates, atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) produces a large fraction of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei in the Earth's atmosphere, which have implications for health and climate. Despite recent advances, atmospheric NPF is still insufficiently understood in the lower troposphere, especially above the mixed layer (ML). This paper presents new results from co-located airborne and ground-based measurements in a boreal forest environment, showing that many NPF events (∼42 %) appear to start in the topmost part of the residual layer (RL). The freshly formed particles may be entrained into the growing mixed layer (ML) where they continue to grow in size, similar to the aerosol particles formed within the ML. The results suggest that in the boreal forest environment, NPF in the upper RL has an important contribution to the aerosol load in the boundary layer (BL).

Roll vortices induce new particle formation bursts in the planetary boundary layer

Abstract. Recent studies have shown the importance of new particle formation (NPF) to global cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) production, as well as to air pollution in megacities. In addition to the necessary presence of low-volatility vapors that can form new aerosol particles, both numerical and observational studies have shown that the dynamics of the planetary boundary layer (BL) plays an important role in NPF. Evidence from field observations suggests that roll vortices might be favorable for inducing NPF in a convective BL. However, direct observations and estimates of the potential importance of this phenomenon to the production of new aerosol particles are lacking. Here we show that rolls frequently induce NPF bursts along the horizontal circulations and that the small clusters and particles originating from these localized bursts grow in size similar to particles typically ascribed to atmospheric NPF that occur almost homogeneously at a regional scale. We outline a method to identify roll-induced NPF from measurements and, based on the collected data, estimate the impact of roll vortices on the overall aerosol particle production due to NPF at a boreal forest site (83 % ± 34 % and 26 % ± 8 % overall enhancement in particle formation for 3 and 10 nm particles, respectively). We conclude that the formation of roll vortices should be taken into account when estimating particle number budgets in the atmospheric BL.

Size-dependent influence of NOx on the growth rates of organic aerosol particles.

Atmospheric new-particle formation (NPF) affects climate by contributing to a large fraction of the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) drive the early particle growth and therefore substantially influence the survival of newly formed particles to CCN. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is known to suppress the NPF driven by HOMs, but the underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. Here, we examine the response of particle growth to the changes of HOM formation caused by NOx. We show that NOx suppresses particle growth in general, but the suppression is rather nonuniform and size dependent, which can be quantitatively explained by the shifted HOM volatility after adding NOx. By illustrating how NOx affects the early growth of new particles, a critical step of CCN formation, our results help provide a refined assessment of the potential climatic effects caused by the diverse changes of NOx level in forest regions around the globe.

Diurnal cycle of iodine, bromine, and mercury concentrations in Svalbard surface snow

Abstract. Sunlit snow is highly photochemically active and plays a key role in the exchange of gas phase species between the cryosphere and the atmosphere. Here, we investigate the behaviour of two selected species in surface snow: mercury (Hg) and iodine (I). Hg can deposit year-round and accumulate in the snowpack. However, photo-induced re-emission of gas phase Hg from the surface has been widely reported. Iodine is active in atmospheric new particle formation, especially in the marine boundary layer, and in the destruction of atmospheric ozone. It can also undergo photochemical re-emission. Although previous studies indicate possible post-depositional processes, little is known about the diurnal behaviour of these two species and their interaction in surface snow. The mechanisms are still poorly constrained, and no field experiments have been performed in different seasons to investigate the magnitude of re-emission processes Three sampling campaigns conducted at an hourly resolution for 3 d each were carried out near Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard) to study the behaviour of mercury and iodine in surface snow under different sunlight and environmental conditions (24 h darkness, 24 h sunlight and day–night cycles). Our results indicate a different behaviour of mercury and iodine in surface snow during the different campaigns. The day–night experiments demonstrate the existence of a diurnal cycle in surface snow for Hg and iodine, indicating that these species are indeed influenced by the daily solar radiation cycle. Differently, bromine did not show any diurnal cycle. The diurnal cycle also disappeared for Hg and iodine during the 24 h sunlight period and during 24 h darkness experiments supporting the idea of the occurrence (absence) of a continuous recycling or exchange at the snow–air interface. These results demonstrate that this surface snow recycling is seasonally dependent, through sunlight. They also highlight the non-negligible role that snowpack emissions have on ambient air concentrations and potentially on iodine-induced atmospheric nucleation processes.
