Assessment of single- and dual-PUF-containing passive air samplers for the collection of atmospheric PAHs

In this study, atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in fifteen individual, consecutive sampling events conducted in a semi-urban area of Bursa between June 2021 and February 2022 using passive air samplers (PASs). In this study, PASs containing single and dual PUF disks were used simultaneously and side by side. The aim of this study was to compare the results obtained from PASs containing single and dual PUF disks in terms of mass and number of PAH compounds. To our knowledge, the use of PASs containing dual PUF disks was applied for the first time in the literature. Because of the extended surface area, dual PUFs containing PAS can sample and detect more atmospheric PAHs. PAH masses in both samplers had a decreasing relationship with temperature. During the sampling period, the total masses of PAHs (∑16 PAH) were calculated as 1058 ± 1042 ng (117–3380 ng) on single-PUF disks and 1930 ± 1749 ng (279–5640 ng) on dual-PUF disks. The ratio of the dual-PUF value to the single-PUF value for ∑16 PAH in the samples varied between 1.41 and 3.45 (1.99 ± 0.50). Moreover, when the single and dual PUF mass results were evaluated on a compound basis, high correlation results were obtained. The sampling characteristics of both samplers were interpreted with the effect of possible PAH sources. It was determined that both samplers were affected by the same sources in the region due to the high similarities in diagnostic ratios. The main sources of PAHs were primarily residential heating and vehicle emissions.

Temporal Trend of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Atmosphere: A Case Study within 24h after Snowfall.

Based on air samples within 24h after snowfall, gaseous and particulate concentrations of 16 priority PAHs were obtained, which provided a good opportunity to study the temporal trend of atmospheric PAHs. An obvious temporal trend with atmospheric concentration was observed, which was mainly influenced by emission sources. It was found that the maximum concentration (Σ16PAHs) was 272.8 ng/m3, appeared in the rush hour of traffic. To the contrary, the minimum concentration was 82.39 ng/m3 at the period with the least anthropogenic activities. The values of particle-phase fraction[Formula: see text]) and G/P partitioning quotient (log K P) were increased along with molecular weight of PAHs. However, for individual PAHs, the differences with [Formula: see text] and log K P were not obvious within 24h. Furthermore, similar statistically significant positive correlations were found between log K P and log K OA among different periods. According to the short sampling program, chemical properties should be the major influencing factor for the temporal trend of G/P partitioning. The results of the case study provided new insights into the research field of G/P partitioning of PAHs.

Characteristics, Atmospheric Reactivity, and Source Apportionment of Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds in Wuhu

In this study, the pollution characteristics, photochemical effects, and sources of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the urban areas of Wuhu were investigated from September 2018 to August 2019. The results showed that the annual average mixing ratio of ambient VOCs in Wuhu was 27.86×10-9, with the highest values in fall (31.16×10-9), followed by summer (28.70×10-9), winter (24.75×10-9), and spring (24.04×10-9). The diurnal patterns showed two VOC peaks, due to traffic exhaust, at 08:00-09:00 and 18:00-19:00. The estimated total OFP of VOCs was 255.29 μg·m-3, and aromatics, olefins, alkanes, OVOCs, and halocarbons contributed 48.83%, 21.04%, 18.32%, 11.47%, and 0.35% to the average OFP, respectively. The total AFP was 1.84 μg·m-3, among which aromatics and alkanes accounted for 87.69% and 12.31%, respectively. The ratios of B/T/E indicated that atmospheric aromatic hydrocarbons were mainly derived from vehicle exhaust, as well as industry emission and solvent usage. Source apportionment indicated that petroleum evaporation, vehicle exhaust, solvent evaporation, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), biogenic source, and secondary source shared 11.57%, 34.53%, 16.63%, 20.76%, 3.54%, and 12.97% of ambient VOCs during the sampling period, respectively.

Occurrence and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmosphere and soil from 2013 to 2019 in the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

Long-term monitoring is essential for revealing pollution trends, but relevant studies in the Antarctic remain limited. In this study, a seven-year continuous monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere and soil was carried out at the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. Average concentrations of Σ15PAHs were 7134.491 pg/m3 and 61.093 ng/g in air and soil, respectively. A declining trend was observed for Σ15PAHs in air during the 2013–2019 summer, but this was not found in soil. Potential sources of PAHs in the Fildes Peninsula were identified by PMF modeling, correlation analysis, air mass back-trajectories and component analysis. The results showed that PAHs in the gas phase were more easily influenced by long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) than in the particle phase. Moreover, temperature played a key role in the PAHs concentration in particle phase. Occurrence of Σ15PAHs in soil was mainly attributed to local sources including fossil fuel combustion and spilling.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Urban and Suburban Atmospheres in Central China: Spatiotemporal Patterns, Source Implications, and Health Risk Assessment

: Ambient aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) are hazardous air pollutants and the main precursors of ozone (O3). In this study, the characteristics of ambient AHs were investigated at an urban site (Ziyang, ZY) and a suburban site (Jiangxia, JX) in Wuhan, Central China, in 2017. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was used to investigate the sources of AHs, and a health risk assessment was applied to estimate the effects of AHs on human health. The concentrations of total AHs at ZY (2048 ± 1364 pptv) were comparable (p > 0.05) to that (2023 ± 1015 pptv) at JX. Source apportionment results revealed that vehicle exhaust was the dominant source of both, total AHs, and toluene, contributing 51.9 ± 13.1% and 49.3 ± 9.5% at ZY, and 44.7 ± 12.6% and 43.2 ± 10.2% at JX, respectively. Benzene was mainly emitted from vehicle exhaust at ZY (50.2 ± 15.5%), while it was mainly released from biomass and coal burning sources at JX (50.6 ± 16.7%). The health risk assessment results indicated that AHs did not have a significant non-carcinogenic risk, while the carcinogenic risks of benzene exceeded the regulatory limits set by the USEPA for adults (1 × 10−6) at both sites. Hence, controlling the emissions of vehicular and biomass/coal burning sources will be an effective way to reduce ambient AHs and the health risk of benzene exposure in this region. These findings will enhance our knowledge of ambient AHs in Central China and be helpful for local governments to formulate air pollution control strategies.

Congener-specific determination of ultratrace levels of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmosphere and industrial stack gas by isotopic dilution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry method

Isotopic dilution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS) has overwhelming advantages with respect to the accuracy of congener-specific ultratrace analysis of complex persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in environmental matrices. However, an isotopic dilution GC/HRMS method for analysis of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs) using 13C-labelled congeners as internal standards has not been established. In this study, a method for identification and quantification of 38 congeners of Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs in atmosphere and stack gas samples from waste incinerators was developed using the isotopic dilution GC/HRMS technique. The instrumental detection limits of the GC/HRMS method ranged from 0.2pg to 1.8pg for Cl-PAH congeners, and 0.7pg to 2.7pg for Br-PAH congeners, which were about three orders of magnitude lower than those of the GC/quadrupole MS method. This new method developed was also the first to enable determination of Cl-PAH and Br-PAH homologs comprising congeners with the same molecular skeleton and chlorine or bromine substitution numbers. Among the detected congeners, seven Cl-PAH congeners and thirteen Br-PAH congeners that were abundant in the atmosphere and stack gases released from waste incinerators were firstly detected in real samples and reported using the established isotopic dilution GC/HRMS method. The developed isotopic dilution GC/HRMS is significant and needed for better studying the environmental behavior and health risk of Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs.

Spatiotemporal patterns and source implications of aromatic hydrocarbons at six rural sites across China's developed coastal regions

AbstractAromatic hydrocarbons are important anthropogenic precursors of tropospheric ozone and secondary organic aerosols. Here we measured ambient aromatic hydrocarbons from March 2012 to February 2014 at six rural sites in China's developed coastal regions. On average, benzene (B) comprised > 50% of total benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), and xylenes (X) (BTEX) at sites in the Northeast China Plain (NECP) or in the North China Plain (NCP), whereas T, E, and X accounted for > 77% of total BTEX at sites in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta in the south. BTEX at the northern sites was significantly correlated (p < 0.01) with combustion tracer‐carbon monoxide (CO) but weakly correlated with traffic marker‐methyl tert‐butyl ether (MTBE), suggesting that their main sources were coal and biofuel/biomass burning with substantially elevated B levels during the winter heating period. In contrast, BTEX at the southern sites originated mainly from traffic‐related and/or industrial emission sources, as indicated by the poor correlations with CO but highly significant (p < 0.01) correlations with MTBE and tetrachloroethylene, an industrial emission tracer. The B/CO emission ratios from measurement agreed within a factor of 2 with that of a previous widely used emission inventory of China, but the T/CO ratio at the NECP site and the o‐X/CO ratio at the NCP site were 29% and 38% of that in the inventory, respectively; the E/CO and X/CO ratios at the YRD site were 3.2–3.5 fold that in the emission inventory.

A method for stable carbon isotope ratio and concentration measurements of ambient aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract. A technique for compound-specific analysis of stable carbon isotope ratios and concentration of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is presented. It is based on selective VOC sampling onto adsorbent-filled cartridges by passing large volumes of air (up to 80 L) through the cartridge. The hydrocarbons are recovered by thermal desorption followed by two-step cryogenic trapping and then are separated by gas chromatography in the laboratory. Once separated, individual VOCs are subjected to online oxidation in a combustion interface and isotope ratio analysis by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The method allows measurements of stable carbon isotope ratios of ambient aromatic VOCs present in low pptV to ppbV levels with an accuracy of typically better than 0.5 ‰. The precision of concentration measurements is better than 10%. Examples of measurements conducted as part of a joint Environment Canada–York University (EC-YU) measurement campaign at a semi-rural location demonstrate that the ability to make accurate measurements in air with low VOC mixing ratios is important to avoid bias from an overrepresentation of samples that are strongly impacted by recent emissions.

Aromatic hydrocarbons in the atmosphere transported over long distances, were measured in rural and urban areas in order to determine their source characterization and chemical behavior. The aromatic hydrocarbons emitted from different sources with characteristic ratios are chemically changed depending on their reactivity with OH radicals. Comparing the observed relative contents of Cs aromatic hydrocarbons with the characteristic ratios of each source, photochemical aging was observed in field measurements performed on the top of a mountain, in a coastal area, and on the meteorological observation tower.
