Mesospheric Nitric Oxide Transport in WACCM

AbstractEnergetic particle precipitation (EPP) causes ionization of the main constituents of the Earth's atmosphere which leads to the production of nitric oxide (NO) throughout the polar mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Due to the long lifetime of NO during winter, it can also be transported deeper into the atmosphere by the mesospheric residual circulation (the indirect EEP effect). This study investigates the mesospheric indirect NO response to EEP using Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) version 6. In comparison to observations from the instrument Solar Occultation For Ice Experiment (SOFIE) on the AIM (Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere) satellite, a wintertime underestimation is found in the modeled mesospheric NO amount. WACCM's temperature profile is found to be vertically shifted compared to observations by SOFIE and by The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry instrument on the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics Dynamics satellite (SABER). The discrepancies in NO are therefore attributed to the model's ability to simulate the dynamics responsible for the indirect EEP effect. The drivers of this transport are investigated by sensitivity runs of WACCM's gravity wave forcing. Changing the amplitude of the non‐orographic gravity waves and the Prandtl number improves the modeled vertical distribution of NO and temperature in the MLT region.

Improving the Thermosphere Ionosphere in a Whole Atmosphere Model by Assimilating GOLD Disk Temperatures

AbstractGlobal‐Scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) disk measurements of far ultraviolet molecular nitrogen band emissions are used to retrieve column integrated disk temperatures (Tdisk), which are representative of the lower‐and‐middle thermosphere. The present work develops a new approach to assimilate the Tdisk in the whole atmosphere community climate model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension using the data assimilation research testbed ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. Nine days of data, 1–9 November 2018, are assimilated. Analysis state variables such as thermospheric effective temperature (Teff, airglow layer integrated temperature), ratio of atomic oxygen to molecular nitrogen column densities (O/N2), and column electron content are compared with a control simulation that is only constrained up to ∼50 km. It is observed that assimilation of the GOLD Tdisk improves the analysis states when compared with the control simulation. The analysis and model states, particularly, Teff, O/N2, and electron column density (ECD) are compared with their measurement counterparts for a validation of the assimilation. Teff and O/N2 are compared with GOLD Tdisk and O/N2. While, the ECD is compared with ground based total electron content measurements from global navigational satellite system receivers. Root mean square error (RMSE) improvements in Teff and O/N2 are about 10.8% and 22.6%, respectively. The RMSE improvement in analyses ECD is about 10% compared to the control simulation.

Ionospheric Variability during the 2020–2021 SSW: COSMIC-2 Observations and WACCM-X Simulations

Variability in the ionosphere during the 2020–2021 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is investigated using a combination of Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate-2 (COSMIC-2) observations and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere–ionosphere eXtension (WACCM-X) simulations. The unprecedented spatial–temporal sampling of the low latitude ionosphere afforded by COSMIC-2 enables investigating the short-term (<5 days) variability in the ionosphere during the SSW event. The COSMIC-2 observations reveal a reduction in the diurnal and zonal mean ionosphere total electron content (ITEC) and reduced amplitude of the diurnal variation in the ionosphere during the SSW. Enhanced ITEC amplitudes of the semidiurnal solar and lunar migrating tides and the westward propagating semidiurnal tide with zonal wavenumber 3 are also observed. The WACCM-X simulations demonstrate that these variations are driven by variability in the stratosphere–mesosphere during the 2020–2021 SSW event. The results show the impact of the 2020–2021 SSW on the mean state, diurnal, and semidiurnal variations in the ionosphere, as well as the capabilities of the COSMIC-2 mission to observe short-term variability in the ionosphere that is driven by meteorological variability in the lower atmosphere.

The influence of iodine on the Antarctic stratospheric ozone hole

The catalytic depletion of Antarctic stratospheric ozone is linked to anthropogenic emissions of chlorine and bromine. Despite its larger ozone-depleting efficiency, the contribution of ocean-emitted iodine to ozone hole chemistry has not been evaluated, due to the negligible iodine levels previously reported to reach the stratosphere. Based on the recently observed range (0.77 ± 0.1 parts per trillion by volume [pptv]) of stratospheric iodine injection, we use the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model to assess the role of iodine in the formation and recent past evolution of the Antarctic ozone hole. Our 1980-2015 simulations indicate that iodine can significantly impact the lower part of the Antarctic ozone hole, contributing, on average, 10% of the lower stratospheric ozone loss during spring (up to 4.2% of the total stratospheric column). We find that the inclusion of iodine advances the beginning and delays the closure stages of the ozone hole by 3 d to 5 d, increasing its area and mass deficit by 11% and 20%, respectively. Despite being present in much smaller amounts, and due to faster gas-phase photochemical reactivation, iodine can dominate (∼73%) the halogen-mediated lower stratospheric ozone loss during summer and early fall, when the heterogeneous reactivation of inorganic chlorine and bromine reservoirs is reduced. The stratospheric ozone destruction caused by 0.77 pptv of iodine over Antarctica is equivalent to that of 3.1 (4.6) pptv of biogenic very short-lived bromocarbons during spring (rest of sunlit period). The relative contribution of iodine to future stratospheric ozone loss is likely to increase as anthropogenic chlorine and bromine emissions decline following the Montreal Protocol.

A Comparison of the Midlatitude Nickel and Sodium Layers in the Mesosphere: Observations and Modeling

AbstractA dual‐wavelength resonance fluorescence lidar facility, operating at 341 and 589 nm, was used to observe simultaneously the Ni and Na layers in the upper atmosphere over Yanqing station, Beijing (40.41°N, 116.01°E). Lidar measurements were performed on 126 nights (1090 hr in total) from April 2019 to March 2020 and April 2021 to August 2021, so that the full seasonal cycle of the Ni layer was observed for the first time. The Ni and Na layers exhibit a similar annual cycle, increasing by a factor of ∼3 from a mid‐summer minimum to a midwinter maximum. The annual mean column densities of Ni and Na are 3.1 × 108 and 2.5 × 109 cm−2, respectively, giving a mean Na:Ni ratio of 8.1, which is significantly larger than their CI chondritic ratio of 1.2. This is explained by the more efficient ablation of Na from cosmic dust particles by a factor of 3, and the more rapid neutralization of Na+ between 90 and 100 km, where the measured Na+:Ni+ ratio is only 2.2. The Ni layer peak occurs around 84 km, 8 km below that of Na. These features are simulated satisfactorily by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) and are explained by significant differences in the neutral chemistry of the two metals below 90 km and their ion‐molecule chemistry between 90 and 100 km.

Impacts of Lower Thermospheric Atomic Oxygen and Dynamics on the Thermospheric Semiannual Oscillation Using GITM and WACCM‐X

AbstractThe latitudinal and temporal variation of atomic oxygen (O) is opposite between the empirical model, NRLMSISE‐00 (MSIS) and the whole atmosphere model, whole atmosphere community climate model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) at 97–100 km. Atomic Oxygen from WACCM‐X has maxima at solstices and summer mid‐high latitudes, similar to [O] from Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER). We use the densities and dynamics from WACCM‐X to drive the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (GITM) at its lower boundary and compare it with the MSIS driven GITM. We focus on the differences in the modeling of the thermospheric and ionospheric semiannual oscillation (T‐I SAO). Our results reveal that driving GITM with WACCM‐X causes the T‐I SAO to maximize around solstices, opposite to when MSIS is used. This is because the global mixing in GITM during solstices is not strong enough to decrease the solstitial [O] densities below the equinoctial values between mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) and upper thermosphere. Larger summer [O] in the MLT leads to the accumulation of [O] at lower latitudes in the thermosphere due to weaker meridional transport, which further increases the amplitude of the oppositely phased SAO. WACCM‐X itself has the right phase of SAO in the upper thermosphere but wrong at lower altitudes. The exact mechanisms that can correct the phase of T‐I SAO in GITM while using SABER‐like [O] in the MLT are currently unknown and warrant further investigation. We suggest mechanisms that can reduce the solstitial maxima in the lower thermosphere, for example, stronger interhemispheric meridional winds, stronger residual circulation, seasonal variations in eddy diffusion, and momentum from breaking gravity waves.

Comparative Study of the Variability of the Non‐Migrating Tide DE3 Using WACCM‐X Simulations and TIMED/SABER Observations

AbstractBased on the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) model outputs and Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED)/Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) observations, we examine the global structures and temporal variations, that is, climatological and meteorological characteristics, of the daily diurnal eastward propagating non‐migrating temperature tide with zonal wavenumber 3 component (DE3), which could drive the ionospheric longitudinal structure wavenumber 4 structure (WN4), from 2003 to 2012 within the ±45° latitudes in the Mesosphere and low thermosphere (MLT) region (with altitude of 75–108 km). For the climatological characteristics (i.e., long‐term variability such as inter‐ and intra‐annual variations), both the WACCM‐X model outputs and TIMED/SABER observations show that the DE3 tides have stronger amplitudes during boreal later summer and early autumn (July, August, and September), and show Quasi‐biennial oscillation phenomenon. Meanwhile, only the WACCM‐X model presents a weak peak of the DE3 in boreal winter (December, January, and February). As to the meteorological characteristics (i.e., short‐term variability such as day‐to‐day variations), it is found that: (a) the short‐term variabilities from both the model outputs and observations are stronger at low‐latitudes (<30°) and high altitudes (>100 km); (b) the two datasets display an obvious semi‐annual variation of the DE3 day‐to‐day variabilities with the monthly standard deviations larger during the solstices; (c) only from the WACCM‐X model outputs, the short‐term variability of the DE3 exhibit an annual variation with the monthly standard deviations larger in boreal winter, which is related to the small peak in the DE3 tidal amplitudes. Comparing the absolute amplitudes, the contribution of the wave phases play more important roles in the short‐term variation of the temperature DE3 tidal component from both the WACCM‐X model outputs and TIMED/SABER observations. Overall, the WACCM‐X model outputs can well reproduce the temporal variation of the non‐migrating tide DE3 in the MLT region, especially the day‐to‐day variability.

Variability of the Aerosol Content in the Tropical Lower Stratosphere from 2013 to 2019: Evidence of Volcanic Eruption Impacts

This paper quantifies the tropical stratospheric aerosol content as impacted by volcanic events over the 2013–2019 period. We use global model simulations by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) which is part of the Community Earth System Model version 1.0 (CESM1). WACCM is associated with the Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA) sectional aerosol microphysics model which includes full sulphur chemical and microphysical cycles with no a priori assumption on particle size. Five main volcanic events (Kelud, Calbuco, Ambae, Raikoke and Ulawun) have been reported and are shown to have significantly influenced the stratospheric aerosol layer in the tropics, either through direct injection in this region or through transport from extra-tropical latitudes. Space-borne data as well as ground-based lidar and balloon-borne in situ observations are used to evaluate the model calculations in terms of aerosol content, vertical distribution, optical and microphysical properties, transport and residence time of the various volcanic plumes. Overall, zonal mean model results reproduce the occurrence and vertical extents of the plumes derived from satellite observations but shows some discrepancies for absolute values of extinction and of stratospheric aerosol optical depth (SAOD). Features of meridional transport of the plumes emitted from extra-tropical latitudes are captured by the model but simulated absolute values of SAOD differ from 6 to 200% among the various eruptions. Simulations tend to agree well with observed in situ vertical profiles for the Kelud and Calbuco plumes but this is likely to depend on the period for which comparison is done. Some explanations for the model–measurement discrepancies are discussed such as the inaccurate knowledge of the injection parameters and the presence of ash not accounted in the simulations.

Day‐To‐Day Variability of the MLT DE3 Using Joint Analysis on Observations From TIDI‐TIMED and a Meteor Radar Meridian Chain

AbstractIn the present work, daily variation of eastward propagating diurnal tide with zonal‐wave number 3 (DE3) is derived from joint analysis on observations from Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics Doppler Interferometer and a meteor radar chain around meridian 120°E during years of 2012–2015 and 2018–2020 via a novel method. Together with empirical tidal modes (ETMs), which are based on the Global Scale Wave Model, daily DE3 in horizontal winds are extracted. ETMs characterize the two‐dimensionally latitude‐altitudinal tidal structure with consideration of tidal dissipation, and thus makes it possible to obtain the DE3 tide extending to pole‐to‐pole in latitudes and covering 80–140 km on altitudes. Quantitatively analyzing day‐to‐day variability of mesosphere and lower thermosphere DE3 reveals that the variation of tidal phase is the main contributor to the DE3 day‐to‐day variability for both zonal and meridional winds. The strength of tidal‐phase induced variability has a clear seasonal dependence that is strong around June and December solstices. Prominent semiannual oscillation (SAO) for zonal (∼16%) and meridional (∼24%) winds are revealed, and annual oscillation (AO) is superposed on the SAO for the DE3 in meridional winds (∼9%). Tidal‐phase induced variability is generally stronger in solar minima (2018–2020) than that in solar maxima (2013–2015). Furthermore, a comparison with simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model eXtended is discussed. The simulations confirm that the primary role of tidal‐phase variations on the day‐to‐day variability. The model does not reproduce the SAO as shown in observations, while the AO in meridional winds is simulated well.

The Mid‐ to High‐Latitude Migrating Semidiurnal Tide: Results From a Mechanistic Tide Model and SuperDARN Observations

AbstractSimulations of the solar thermal migrating semidiurnal (SW2) tide in the mesosphere‐lower‐thermosphere (MLT) are compared against meteor wind observations from a longitudinal chain of high‐latitude Super Dual Auroral Radar Network radars. The simulations span the year 2015 and are performed using a mechanistic primitive equation model. The model employs a whole‐atmosphere tide forcing based on temperature tendency fields from the Specified Dynamics Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with Thermosphere and Ionosphere Extension, and a background atmospheric specification based on zonal wind and temperature data from the Navy Global Environmental Model‐High Altitude meteorological analysis system. Results show that the model accurately reproduces the observed seasonal variability of the SW2 tide in both the amplitude and phase. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate how the tidal forcing, dissipation terms, and seasonal variations in the background atmosphere shape the seasonal variations of the simulated SW2 tide. Notable results are that the background atmosphere most strongly impacts the SW2 tide forced in the troposphere, and that the specification of a narrow surface friction profile enhances the net SW2 amplitude in the MLT between April and October. Eddy diffusion is found to damp the simulated tide predominantly around summer solstice and in December.

Specified dynamics scheme impacts on wave-mean flow dynamics, convection, and tracer transport in CESM2 (WACCM6)

Abstract. Specified dynamics schemes are ubiquitous modeling tools for isolating the roles of dynamics and transport on chemical weather and climate. They typically constrain the circulation of a chemistry–climate model to the circulation in a reanalysis product through linear relaxation. However, recent studies suggest that these schemes create a divergence in chemical climate and the meridional circulation between models and do not accurately reproduce trends in the circulation. In this study we perform a systematic assessment of the specified dynamics scheme in the Community Earth System Model version 2, Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (CESM2 (WACCM6)), which proactively nudges the circulation toward the reference meteorology. Specified dynamics experiments are performed over a wide range of nudging timescales and reference meteorology frequencies, with the model's circulation nudged to its own free-running output – a clean test of the specified dynamics scheme. Errors in the circulation scale robustly and inversely with meteorology frequency and have little dependence on the nudging timescale. However, the circulation strength and errors in tracers, tracer transport, and convective mass flux scale robustly and inversely with the nudging timescale. A 12 to 24 h nudging timescale at the highest possible reference meteorology frequency minimizes errors in tracers, clouds, and the circulation, even up to the practical limit of one reference meteorology update every time step. The residual circulation and eddy mixing integrate tracer errors and accumulate them at the end of their characteristic transport pathways, leading to elevated error in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere and in the polar stratosphere. Even in the most ideal case, there are non-negligible errors in tracers introduced by the nudging scheme. Future development of more sophisticated nudging schemes may be necessary for further progress.

Inter‐Hemispheric Coupling During Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events With Elevated Stratopause

AbstractSudden stratospheric warmings (SSW) are large‐scale disruptions of the wintertime state of the stratosphere that can affect the circulation at synoptic and global scales, including altitudes up to the mesopause in both winter and summer hemispheres. In this study, the response of the summer mesosphere is analyzed during the SSW in the winter stratosphere. In particular, we focus on major SSW events where the climatological stratopause disappears and subsequently reforms at higher altitude, which we refer to as “extreme SSW” in this article. The summer mesosphere response to such extreme SSW events is analyzed in three different phases: (a) stratosphere warming phase, (b) stratopause discontinuity phase, and (c) stratopause reformation phase. Composites of anomalies with respect to climatology derived from the Microwave Limb Sounder and the extended version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with specified dynamics are analyzed. The polar summer mesosphere cools during the stratospheric warming phase and warms in subsequent phases. A detailed lag‐correlation analysis shows strong negative correlation of −0.6 to −0.8 between the summer mesosphere and the winter stratosphere during the stratosphere warming phase, and a positive correlation of 0.4–0.6 in the phases thereafter. An attempt is made to explain the apparent drivers and dynamics responsible for these couplings, supported with evidence from observations and model output.

A Comparison of MLT Wind between Meteor Radar Chain and SD-WACCM Results

A meteor radar chain located along the 120°E meridian in the Northern Hemisphere from low to middle latitudes provides long-term horizontal wind observations of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. In this study, we report a seasonal variation and its latitudinal feature in the horizontal mean wind in the MLT region observed by 6 meteor radars located at Mohe (53.5°N, 122.3°E), Beijing (40.3°N, 116.2°E), Mengcheng (33.4°N, 116.5°E), Wuhan (30.6°N, 114.4°E), Kunming (25.6°N, 108.3°E) and Fuke (19.5°N, 109.1°E) stations. In addition, we compare the MLT wind measured by the meteor radars and the simulated by Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). In general, the WACCM appears to well capture the seasonal and latitudinal variations in the zonal wind component. Especially, the temporal evolution of the eastward zonal wind maximum shifts from July to May as the latitude decreases. However, the WACCM meridional wind show differences with the meteor radar observations.

The Impact of Assimilating COSMIC‐2 Observations of Electron Density in WACCMX

AbstractThe present study investigates the impact of assimilating electron density profiles from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate‐2 (COSMIC‐2) mission in a whole atmosphere data assimilation system. The observations are assimilated into the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension (WACCMX) using the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. Assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles during the evaluation time period of 25–30 April 2020 leads to improvement in both the 1 hr forecast and analysis electron densities in WACCMX + DART. Compared to a control experiment that does not assimilate COSMIC‐2 observations, the assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles reduces the 1 hr forecast root mean square error (RMSE) and bias with respect to COSMIC‐2 observations at 300 km by 6.76% and 24.91%, respectively. Assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles does not significantly influence the RMSE and bias with respect to ground‐based Global Navigation Satellite System vertical total electron content observations. The equatorial vertical plasma drift velocity in WACCMX + DART is changed by ±5–10 ms−1 due to the assimilation of the COSMIC‐2 electron density profiles, indicating that the model representation of the electrodynamics of the low latitude ionosphere are significantly impacted by the assimilation of COSMIC‐2 observations.

HEPPA III Intercomparison Experiment on Electron Precipitation Impacts: 1. Estimated Ionization Rates During a Geomagnetic Active Period in April 2010

AbstractPrecipitating auroral and radiation belt electrons are considered an important part of the natural forcing of the climate system. Recent studies suggest that this forcing is underestimated in current chemistry‐climate models. The High Energy Particle Precipitation in the Atmosphere III intercomparison experiment is a collective effort to address this point. Here, eight different estimates of medium energy electron (MEE) ionization rates are assessed during a geomagnetic active period in April 2010. The objective is to understand the potential uncertainty related to the MEE energy input. The ionization rates are all based on the Medium Energy Proton and Electron Detector (MEPED) on board the NOAA/POES and EUMETSAT/MetOp spacecraft series. However, different data handling, ionization rate calculations, and background atmospheres result in a wide range of mesospheric electron ionization rates. Although the eight data sets agree well in terms of the temporal variability, they differ by about an order of magnitude in ionization rate strength both during geomagnetic quiet and disturbed periods. The largest spread is found in the aftermath of enhanced geomagnetic activity. Furthermore, governed by different energy limits, the atmospheric penetration depth varies, and some differences related to latitudinal coverage are also evident. The mesospheric NO densities simulated with the Whole Atmospheric Community Climate Model driven by highest and lowest ionization rates differ by more than a factor of eight. In a follow‐up study, the atmospheric responses are simulated in four chemistry‐climate models (CCM) and compared to satellite observations, considering both the CCM structure and the ionization forcing.

Contrasting Effects of Indian Ocean Basin and Dipole Modes on the Stratosphere

AbstractThe stratospheric impact of the sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the Indian Ocean has attracted extensive attention. Recent warming of the tropical Indian Ocean is characterized by increases in both the magnitude and zonal gradient, which is related to the variability in the positive phase of the Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) and Indian Ocean dipole mode (IOD). Yet, previous studies mainly focused on the stratospheric impact of the IOBM. Using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (version 4), this study explores the impact of positive IOD events on the stratosphere and compares it with the IOBM. Results show that the IOBM (IOD) serves to dry (moisten) the tropical lower stratosphere on the annual average. The moistening (drying) of the lower stratosphere in response to IOBM occurs mainly in winter and spring (autumn), while the IOD exerts a moistening effect in winter. Both modes can enhance the northern stratospheric polar vortex, and the effect of IOD is close to that of IOBM, although SST anomalies associated with the IOD are smaller. This implies that the Indian Ocean SST gradient exerts a greater influence on the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere than does the Indian Ocean SST magnitude. Moreover, both modes weaken the southern stratospheric polar vortex, but the effect of IOD is much smaller since its impact on stationary waves is weak. Contrary to the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere, the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere is more sensitive to the Indian Ocean SST magnitude than to the SST gradient.

Impact of Thermospheric Wind Data Assimilation on Ionospheric Electrodynamics Using a Coupled Whole Atmosphere Data Assimilation System

AbstractThe upward plasma drift and equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) in the Earth's ionosphere are strongly influenced by the zonal electric field, which is generated by the wind dynamo. Specification and forecasting of thermospheric winds thus plays an important role in ionospheric weather prediction. In this study, we assess the impact of assimilating thermospheric wind observations from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument on NASA's Ionospheric CONnection (ICON) explorer satellite on the ionospheric electrodynamics. Empirical localization functions (ELFs) of ICON/MIGHTI zonal and meridional winds are also computed and applied to our data assimilation experiments, enabling improved assimilation of the ICON/MIGHTI wind observations. A set of observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) are performed using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension (WACCMX) with data assimilation provided by the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. The results show that assimilating the ICON/MIGHTI wind observations with the ELF improves the zonal and meridional wind root mean square error (RMSE) by 16%–18% and 7%–10%, respectively. The improved wind specification further improves the low‐latitude E × B vertical drift RMSE by about 18%. The response of electron densities is slower, and the overall impact is smaller. The improvement of the ionosphere F‐region maximum electron density (NmF2) between ±45° is about 8% after 18 days of data assimilation.

A New MEPED‐Based Precipitating Electron Data Set

The work presented here introduces a new data set for inclusion of energetic electron precipitation (EEP) in climate model simulations. Measurements made by the medium energy proton and electron detector (MEPED) instruments onboard both the Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites and the European Space Agency Meteorological Operational satellites are used to create global maps of precipitating electron fluxes. Unlike most previous data sets, the electron fluxes are computed using both the 0° and 90° MEPED detectors. Conversion of observed, broadband electron count rates to differential spectral fluxes uses a linear combination of analytical functions instead of a single function. Two dimensional maps of electron spectral flux are created using Delaunay triangulation to account for the relatively sparse nature of the MEPED sampling. This improves on previous studies that use a 1D interpolation over magnetic local time or L‐shell zonal averaging of the MEPED data. A Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) simulation of the southern hemisphere 2003 winter using the new precipitating electron data set is shown to agree more closely with observations of odd nitrogen than WACCM simulations using other MEPED‐based electron data sets. Simulated EEP‐induced odd nitrogen increases led to ozone losses of more than 15% in the polar stratosphere near 10 hPa in September of 2003.

Impact of Solar Activity on Global Atmospheric Circulation Based on SD-WACCM-X Simulations from 2002 to 2019

In this study, a global atmospheric model, Specified Dynamics Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere eXtension (SD-WACCM-X), and the residual circulation principle were used to study the global atmospheric circulation from the lower to upper atmosphere (~500 km) from 2002 to 2019. Our analysis shows that the atmospheric circulation is clearly influenced by solar activity, especially in the upper atmosphere, which is mainly characterized by an enhanced atmospheric circulation in years with high solar activity. The atmospheric circulation in the upper atmosphere also exhibits an ~11 year period, and its variation is highly correlated with the temporal variation in the F10.7 solar index during the same time series, with a maximum correlation coefficient of up to more than 0.9. In the middle and lower atmosphere, the impact of solar activity on the atmospheric circulation is not as obvious as in the upper atmosphere due to some atmospheric activities such as the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), sudden stratospheric warming (SSW), volcanic forcing, and so on. By comparing the atmospheric circulation in different latitudinal regions between years with high and low solar activity, we found the atmospheric circulation in mid- and high-latitude regions is more affected by solar activity than in low-latitude and equatorial regions. In addition, clear seasonal variation in atmospheric circulation was detected in the global atmosphere, excluding the regions near 10−4 hPa and the lower atmosphere, which is mainly characterized by a flow from the summer hemisphere to the winter hemisphere. In the middle and low atmosphere, the atmospheric circulation shows a quasi-biennial oscillatory variation in the low-latitude and equatorial regions. This work provides a referable study of global atmospheric circulation and demonstrates the impacts of solar activity on global atmospheric circulation.

Observations and Modeling of Strong Thermospheric Winds at High Latitudes and Their Impact on the Lower Thermosphere

AbstractA strong westward wind pattern at altitudes of ∼140–250 km at high latitudes (∼65°) in the approximate longitude range of 100°E–200°E in the Southern Hemisphere, and from 200°E to 300°E in the Northern Hemisphere, known as a “wind wall,” is investigated. Simulations from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) and the Global Airglow (GLOW) model, along with Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) observations, allowed the description of most of the wind wall features. The results indicate that the wind wall is linked to the well‐known high‐latitude wind convection pattern. This atmospheric circulation is significantly stronger during active geomagnetic conditions, where its dusk anticyclonic circulation cell is also enhanced, which results in the origin of the wind wall. The study also reveals the impacts of the wind wall on the vertical velocity and its consequences for the O(1S) green line emission on the lower thermosphere, as well as its influence on the atomic oxygen depletion at high latitudes, which is mainly a response to the complex high‐latitude wind convection pattern and its spatial and temporal variation.
