Rapid high-latitude cooling in the southeastern Pacific sector driven by North Atlantic warming during 1979–2013 in CESM1

During the 1979–2013 satellite observation period, the sea surface temperature (SST) has cooled substantially in the high-latitude Southern Ocean, with the most pronounced cooling tendency centered in the southeastern Pacific domain. Previous hypotheses have commonly ascribed the recent Southern Ocean cooling to either the tropical eastern Pacific cooling or North Atlantic and tropical Indian Ocean SST warming. However, the mechanisms underpinning significant cooling in the southeastern Pacific sector remain debatable. By diagnosing three pacemaker experiments with a state-of-the-art global climate model in which SSTs in the North Atlantic, tropical central-eastern Pacific, and tropical Indian Ocean-western Pacific are individually nudged to mimic the observed trajectory, we show that the North Atlantic dominates in the cold SST response of the southeastern Pacific sector during 1979–2013. Anomalous North Atlantic warming initiates a quasi-stationary Rossby wave response to a south-to-north cross-equatorial Hadley circulation strengthening, leading to an enhanced Amundsen Sea Low. As a result, due primarily to the increased low-level marine cloud cover, the net surface shortwave radiation reduction triggers rapid SST cooling in the southeastern Pacific domain. The southeastern Pacific cold SST anomalies are further maintained via the shortwave radiation-low-cloud-SST positive feedback on decadal timescales. Our results suggest that the shortwave radiation-low-cloud SST feedback is fundamental to the observed long-term cooling of the high-latitude Southern Ocean, with profound climate consequences worldwide.

Wide range of possible trajectories of North Atlantic climate in a warming world.

Decadal variability in the North Atlantic Ocean impacts regional and global climate, yet changes in internal decadal variability under anthropogenic radiative forcing remain largely unexplored. Here we use the Community Earth System Model 2 Large Ensemble under historical and the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 3-7.0 future radiative forcing scenarios and show that the ensemble spread in northern North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) more than doubles during the mid-twenty-first century, highlighting an exceptionally wide range of possible climate states. Furthermore, there are strikingly distinct trajectories in these SSTs, arising from differences in the North Atlantic deep convection among ensemble members starting by 2030. We propose that these are stochastically triggered and subsequently amplified by positive feedbacks involving coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice interactions. Freshwater forcing associated with global warming seems necessary for activating these feedbacks, accentuating the impact of external forcing on internal variability. Further investigation on seven additional large ensembles affirms the robustness of our findings. By monitoring these mechanisms in real time and extending dynamical model predictions after positive feedbacks activate, we may achieve skillful long-lead North Atlantic decadal predictions that are effective for multiple decades.

The Impact of Interactive Ocean Dynamics on Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature Variability

Abstract The impact of interactive ocean dynamics on internal variations of Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) is investigated by comparing preindustrial control simulations of a fully coupled atmosphere–ocean–ice model to the same atmosphere–ice model with the ocean replaced by a motionless slab layer (henceforth slab ocean model). Differences in SST variability between the two models are diagnosed by an optimization technique that finds components whose variance differs as much as possible. This technique reveals that Atlantic SST variability differs significantly between the two models. The two components with the most extreme enhancement of SST variance in the slab ocean model resemble the tripole SST pattern associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) pattern. This result supports previous claims that ocean dynamics are not necessary for the AMV, although ocean dynamics lead to slight increases in the memory of both the AMV and the NAO tripole. The component with the most extreme enhancement of SST variance in the fully coupled model resembles the Atlantic Niño pattern, confirming the ability of our technique to isolate physical modes known to require ocean dynamics. The second component with more variance in the fully coupled model is a mode of subpolar SST variability. Both the reemergence of SST anomalies and changes in ocean heat transport lead to increased SST variance and memory in the subpolar Atlantic. Despite large differences in the mean and variability of SST, atmospheric variability is quite similar between the two models, confirming that most atmospheric variability is generated by internal atmospheric dynamics.

The role of the North Atlantic Ocean on the increase in East Asia’s spring extreme hot day occurrences across the early 2000s

The occurrence frequency of East Asia’s extreme hot day in boreal spring has increased since 1979. Using observational data and a Linear baroclinic model experiment, our study suggests that the occurrence of hot day is mainly due to anomalous high pressure over East Asia associated with a horizontal stationary wave train originating from a positive phase of the North Atlantic Tripole (NAT) sea surface temperature (SST) in spring. The effect of a positive phase of the NAT SST is evident in the 2000s, apparently associated with the linear trend of the North Atlantic SST like a positive phase of the NAT SST. Before 2000s, in contrast, SST forcing in the Indian Ocean and eastern tropical Pacific, which is associated with a negative phase of the NAT SST, may contribute to induce the East Asian hot days through atmospheric teleconnections. This implies that the relationship between a positive phase of the NAT SST and the occurrence of hot days in East Asia has been changed during the 2000s.

Joint influence of the North Atlantic sea surface temperature and the Barents sea-ice concentration on the dipole pattern of Eurasian surface air temperature in March

In recent decades, an increase in the frequency of extreme events in early spring across Eurasia has resulted in significant impacts on crop yields and socio-economic development. However, the variations of March surface air temperature (SAT) over Eurasia and mechanisms are still unclear. This study aims to investigate the dominant mode of the March surface air temperature (SAT) over Eurasia during 1979–2022, and its relationship with sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice concentration (SIC). The results reveal the prevalence of a dipole mode of the Eurasian SAT anomalies (SATAs) in March characterized by positive SATAs in northern (50°N–80°N) Eurasia and negative ones in southern (10°N–45°N) region. Further analyses demonstrate that this dipole mode of Eurasian SATAs shows significant relationships with a positive phase of the North Atlantic tripole SST anomalies (NAT SSTAs), as well as with the decline of Barents Sea SIC anomalies (SICAs). Associated with the NAT SSTAs and the Barents Sea SICAs during March, two Rossby wave trains propagate towards Eurasia through different ways, one is propagating eastwards from the mid-latitude of the North Atlantic to Eurasia, and another one spreads from the polar region to Eurasia. Modulated by these two wave trains, anomalous near-surface southwesterly (northeasterly) wind induces more (less) warm air towards northern Eurasia, while more (less) cloud emerges in southern Eurasia and causes less (more) solar radiation reaching southern Eurasia, leading to the dipole mode of the Eurasian SATAs in March. These results are further confirmed by numerical experiments from the version 5 of the Community Atmosphere Model forced by the above mentioned SSTAs and SICAs.

Relation between Central European Climate Change and Eifel Volcanism during the Last 130,000 Years: The ELSA-23-Tephra-Stack

The analysis of tephra layers in maar lake sediments of the Eifel shows 14 well-visible tephra during the last glacial cycle from the Holocene to the Eemian (0–130,000 yr b2k). These tephra were analyzed for their petrographic composition, which allows us to connect several tephra to eruption sites. All tephra were dated by application of the ELSA-20 chronology, developed using the late Pleistocene infilled maar lake of Auel and the Holocene lake Holzmaar (0–60,000 yr b2k). We extend the ELSA-20 chronology with this paper for the millennia of 60,000–130,000 yr b2k (ELSA-23 chronology), which is based on the infilled maar lake records from Dehner, Hoher List, and Jungferweiher. The evaluation of the tephra from the entire last glacial cycle shows that all 14 tephra were close to interstadial warming of the North Atlantic sea surface temperatures. In particular, phreatomagmatic maar eruptions were systematically associated with Heinrich events or C-events. These events represent times of warming of the Southern Hemisphere, global sea level rise, and CO2 increase, which predate the abrupt interstadial warming events of the Northern Hemisphere. This synchroneity indicates a physical relationship between endogenic and exogenic processes. Changes in the lithospheric stress field in response to changes in continental ice loads have already been suggested as a potential candidate to explain the exogenic forcing of endogenic processes. The chronology of volcanic activity in the Eifel demonstrates that intraplate mantle plumes are also affected by the exogenic forcing of endogenic processes.

Interannual synchronization of the North American summer monsoon and the North Atlantic tropical cyclone genesis frequency

Variations of the North American summer monsoon (NASM) and North Atlantic tropical cyclone (NATC) activities strongly influence climate anomalies in North America, with serious potential risk to life and property. Despite the scientific importance of this topic, the possible linkage between the NASM and the NATC genesis frequency remains unexplored. Here, we aim to examine the relationship between interannual variations of the NASM intensity and the NATC genesis frequency based on observations and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. Our results show a strong association between the NASM intensity and the NATC genesis frequency during the extended boreal summer, with a good synchronization between their interannual variations. In years with stronger (weaker) NASM intensity, the NATC genesis frequency tends to be higher (lower). The observed NASM–NATC synchronization may be explained by two pathways: tropical-ocean-driven pathway and monsoon-heating-driven pathway. In the tropical-ocean-driven pathway, the tropical Pacific and Atlantic interbasin sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies play a critical role in bridging the NASM and NATC, by modulating the cross-Central American wind. Simulations of the tropical Pacific–Atlantic interbasin SST anomalies are critical for CMIP6 models to capture the observed linkage between the NASM and the vertical wind shear over the NATC main development region (MDR). In the monsoon-heating-driven pathway, the heating source due to the rainfall anomalies associated with the NASM can trigger atmospheric circulation anomalies through the Gill-type response, thereby affecting the NATC by changing the vertical wind shear over the MDR. This study demonstrates a connection between interannual variations of the NASM and the NATC genesis frequency, results of which can be used to advance our understanding of the monsoon–TC relationship and increase research focus on the interannual NASM–NATC synchronization in climate prediction.

Seasonal influence of tropical Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature on streamflow variability in the patia river basin

AbstractThis research presents a seasonal analysis of the variability of streamflows in the Patía River Basin (PRB) between 1984 and 2018 and the influence exerted by the large-scale climate variability using non-linear principal component analysis (NLPCA), Pearson's correlation, and composite analysis. The study was conduced during the minimum (July–August–September, JAS) and maximum (October–November–December, OND) streamflow periods. The NLPCA depicted a single significant mode of variability for each season with explained variances greater than 75%. The correlation analysis between the main mode of variability during OND and climate indices showed significant results, mainly with the Pacific Ocean and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In contrast, for JAS, the correlations were significant for the indices linked to the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, the composite analysis indicated that the positive (negative) events during JAS, which show the increase (decrease) of streamflow in PRB, are related to negative (positive) anomalies in the Tropical Northern Atlantic band, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. In comparison, the positive (negative) events during OND are related to negative (positive) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Pacific, corresponding to La Niña (El Niño) events. The results provide evidence of the strong influence of climate indices and tropical Pacific and Atlantic SST on seasonal streamflow in the PRB and establish the foundations for seasonal streamflow modelling, relevant for prevention and risk management as well as for adequate planning and management of water resources in the region.

The new record of drought and warmth in the Amazon in 2023 related to regional and global climatic features

In 2023 Amazonia experienced both historical drought and warm conditions. On October 26th 2023 the water levels at the port of Manaus reached its lowest record since 1902 (12.70 m). In this region, October monthly maximum and minimum temperature anomalies also surpassed previous record values registered in 2015 (+ 3 °C above the normal considering the 1981–2020 average). Here we show that this historical dry and warm situation in Amazonia is associated with two main atmospheric mechanisms: (i) the November 2022–February 2023 southern anomaly of vertical integrated moisture flux (VIMF), related to VIMF divergence and extreme rainfall deficit over southwestern Amazonia, and (ii) the June–August 2023 downward motion over northern Amazonia related to extreme rainfall deficit and warm conditions over this region. Anomalies of both atmospheric mechanisms reached record values during this event. The first mechanism is significantly correlated to negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the equatorial Pacific (November–February La Niña events). The second mechanism is significantly correlated to positive SST anomalies in the equatorial Pacific, related to the impacts of June–September El Niño on the Walker Circulation. While previous extreme droughts were linked to El Niño (warmer North Tropical Atlantic SST) during the austral summer (winter and spring), the transition from La Niña 2022–23 to El Niño 2023 appears to be a key climatic driver in this record-breaking dry and warm situation, combined to a widespread anomalous warming over the worldwide ocean.

Recent autumn sea ice loss in the eastern Arctic enhanced by summer Asian-Pacific Oscillation

Recent rapid Arctic sea ice loss was documented as combined results from anthropogenic forcing and climate system internal variability. However, the role of internal variability is not well understood. Here, we propose that the Asian-Pacific Oscillation (APO), an intrinsic atmospheric mode featuring out-of-phase variations in upper-tropospheric temperatures between Asia and the North Pacific, is one driver for autumn sea ice variability in the eastern Arctic. The positive summer APO favors warming of the mid-latitude North Atlantic sea surface temperatures. This warming persists to autumn and in turn triggers strong anticyclonic anomalies over the Barents-Kara-Laptev Seas and weak lower-tropospheric cyclonic anomalies over the East Siberian Sea, enhancing moisture transport into the eastern Arctic. Such changes consequently increase lower-tropospheric humidity, downwelling longwave radiation, and surface air temperature in the eastern Arctic, thereby melting sea ice. Hence, a recent tendency of the summer APO towards the positive phase accelerates autumn sea ice loss in the eastern Arctic.

Reversal of Projected European Summer Precipitation Decline in a Stabilizing Climate

AbstractPrecipitation projections in transient climate change scenarios have been extensively studied over multiple climate model generations. Although these simulations have also been used to make projections at specific Global Warming Levels (GWLs), dedicated simulations are more appropriate to study changes in a stabilizing climate. Here, we analyze precipitation projections in six multi‐century experiments with fixed atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, conducted with the UK Earth System Model and which span a range of GWLs between 1.5 and 5°C of warming. Regions are identified where the sign of precipitation trends in high‐emission transient projections is reversed in the stabilization experiments. For example, stabilization reverses a summertime precipitation decline across Europe. This precipitation recovery occurs concurrently with changes in the pattern of Atlantic sea surface temperature trends due to a slow recovery of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in the stabilization experiments, along with changes in humidity and atmospheric circulation.

Connections between low- and high- frequency variabilities of stratospheric northern annular mode and Arctic ozone depletion

Previous studies have demonstrated a dynamical linkage between the ozone and stratospheric polar vortex strength, but only a few have mentioned the persistence of the anomalous vortex. This study uses the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise to decompose the winter stratospheric northern annular mode (NAM) variabilities into relatively low frequencies (>4 months) and high frequencies (<2 months) (denoted as NAML and NAMH) and investigates their relationship with the Arctic ozone concentration in March. A closer relationship is found between the Arctic ozone and the NAML, i.e. a persistently strong stratospheric polar vortex in winter (especially February–March) is more critical than a short-lasting extremely strong vortex in contributing to Arctic ozone depletion. We find that a negative NAMH or major stratospheric sudden warming event in early winter could be a precursor for the anomalous depletion of Arctic ozone in March. The NAML changes are further related to the warm North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and ‘central-type’ El Niño-like or La Niña-like SST anomalies in early winter months, as well as cold North Atlantic SST anomalies and higher sea ice concentration in the Barents–Kara Sea from late-autumn to early-spring.

Combined Effects of Multiple Forcing Factors on Extreme Summer Multivariate Compound Heatwaves Over Western Europe

AbstractThe Multivariate compound heatwaves (MCHWs) present a significant risk to human health and ecological diversity, which attract widespread attention from researchers and society. The intensity and variability of summer MCHWs over Western Europe (WE) (MCHWs_WE) have substantially increased over the last two decades. The growing chance of such events is likely related to human activity‐induced climate change. However, the possible contributions from multiple atmospheric boundary forcing remain unclear. This study investigates the combined effects of North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST), Tibetan Plateau (TP) snow cover (SC), and Arctic sea ice (SIC) on the variability of extreme summer MCHWs_WE. Observational analysis shows that an intensified anticyclonic system prevailing over WE, one of the centers of an atmospheric wave train dominating the North Atlantic‐Europe sector and persists from late spring to summer, is the essential system contributing to the extreme MCHWs_WE. Spring North Atlantic SST anomalies in the form of a dipole pattern persist from spring to summer and contribute to the summer extreme MCHWs_WE by exciting a downward propagating Rossby wave train pattern. Additionally, excessive late spring SC over the western TP and SIC over the Arctic, which are stimulated by the North Atlantic anomalous SST‐related wave train, can intensify the MCHWs_WE‐related anticyclonic system through vertical circulation and wave energy transport. The study further quantifies the relative contributions of the aforementioned factors. The findings of this study could potentially offer valuable insights for improving the prediction skill of summer extreme MCHWs_WE.

Exploring the Factors Controlling the Annual Range of Amazon Precipitation

Abstract The annual range (AR) of precipitation in the Amazon River basin has increased steadily since 1979. This increase may have resulted from natural variability and/or anthropogenic forcing, such as local land-use changes and global warming, which has yet to be explored. In this study, climate model experiments using the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2) were conducted to examine the relative contributions of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) variability and anthropogenic forcings to the AR changes in the Amazon rainfall. With CESM2, we design several factorial simulations, instead of actual model projection. We found that the North Atlantic SSTs fluctuation dominantly decreases the precipitation AR trend over the Amazon by −85%. In contrast, other factors, including deforestation and carbon dioxide, contribute to the trend changes, ranging from 25∼35%. The dynamic component, specifically the tendency of vertical motion, made negative contributions, along with the vertical profiles of moist static energy (MSE) tendency. Seasonal-dependent changes in atmospheric stability could be associated with variations in precipitation. It is concluded that surface ocean warming associated with the North Atlantic natural variability and global warming is the key factor in the increased precipitation AR over the Amazon from 1979 to 2014. The continuous local land use changes may potentially influence the precipitation AR in the future.

Hydroclimate Changes Based on Testate Amoebae in the Greater Khingan Mountains’ Peatland (NE China) during the Last Millennium

The driving force of climate change in the monsoon margin is complex, making it a key area for regional and global climate change research. Palaeohydrological studies in the monsoon margin have increased the resolution of research in the long term, transitioning from qualitative to quantitative studies to comprehend climate change processes, patterns, and mechanisms. Testate amoebae (TA) in peat sediments are used as a proxy indicator organism for quantitative reconstruction of palaeohydrology. Thus, their community changes are directly related to precipitation, and widely used to reconstruct the patterns of summer precipitation globally. We investigated TA species and reconstructed palaeohydrological changes in the Greater Khingan Mountains’ Hongtu (HT) peatland, located in the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) margin. The result showed that the most abundant TA species were Assulina muscorum (12.4 ± 5.0%) and Nebela tincta (8.9 ± 4.9%) in the HT peat core. The increase in dry indicator species (e.g., A. muscorum and Alabasta militaris) indicated a drying pattern in the HT peatland since 150 cal yr BP. Principal component analysis (PCA) explained 47.6% of the variation in the selected TA assemblages. During 400 to 250 cal yr BP, PCA axis 1 scores ranged from 0.2 to −1.3 (reflecting a drier climate), associating with the Little Ice Age. The paleohydrology of the northern part of the Greater Khingan Mountains was mainly controlled by the EASM, which was associated with changes in North Atlantic Sea surface temperature and solar radiative forcing. The apparent drying pattern may be the result of the gradual intensification of anthropogenic activities and the increase in EASM intensity.

Flash Drought in the South of Yangtze River and the Potential Impact of North Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature

AbstractFlash droughts (FDs), a type of drought with rapid onset, occurred in growing season have damaging impacts on crops, ecosystem and hence livelihoods. However, the associated physical mechanism were not well understood, which prohibits a skillful early warning. Based on the reanalysis data for 1961–2022, we diagnosed the characteristics, antecedent meteorological conditions and large‐scale atmospheric circulation of FDs over the region south of Yangtze River (SYR), a hotspot region of FDs. The FDs tend to occur during the periods before (i.e., from April to mid‐June) and after (i.e., early July–September) Meiyu season (B‐Meiyu and A‐Meiyu periods). Large precipitation deficits and rapid elevated temperature caused by anomalous subsidence and moisture divergence are responsible for the onset of FDs during the two periods. The North Atlantic tripole‐like sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) modes have potential impact on the anomalous circulations via modulating Rossby wave trains, but with different locations among the two periods. During B‐Meiyu period, the SSTA mode is characterized by positive SSTA over subtropical North Atlantic and negative SSTAs over the tropical and mid‐latitude ocean, triggering a “+ − + − + −” circulation pattern over North Atlantic–Eurasia, which reinforces the East Asian trough (EAT). Anomalous northeasterly winds dominate the SYR suppressing moisture transport from the tropics. The SSTA mode locates farther to the north during A‐Meiyu period, inducing a “+ − + − +” wave train over mid‐latitude North Atlantic‐Eurasia, leading to the strengthening of the western Pacific subtropical high. The high‐pressure anomalies control the SYR, resulting in anomalous subsidence and hence negative precipitation anomalies.

The Important Role of Reduced Moisture Supplies from the Monsoon Region in the Formation of Spring and Summer Droughts over Northeast China

Abstract Anomalies in atmospheric moisture transport are critical for drought formation, with East Asian monsoon anomalies identified as the primary driver of droughts in East Asia. However, the drought mechanism for the border region between monsoon and nonmonsoon land areas remains unclear due to complex interactions between latitudinal circulation patterns. Using a Lagrangian framework, we quantify moisture supply (MS) during spring and summer drought events within the border region, specifically Northeast China (NEC). Our results reveal that decreased MS from monsoon land areas is more crucial than nonmonsoon land areas and local areas for NEC droughts, with the local water recycling playing a more substantial role in summer than in spring. On average, summer droughts are 4 times more intense than spring droughts. Contributions to MS deficits from monsoon land areas, nonmonsoon land areas, and local areas during spring (summer) droughts are 43.2% (43.8%), 25.1% (19.2%), and 22% (33.8%), respectively. The weakened atmospheric circulation from source regions to NEC contributes to over 80% of MS deficits during droughts. Atmospheric wave trains triggered by North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) gradients, along with the weakening of the East Asian subtropical westerly jet in spring and a positive phase of the polar–Eurasian teleconnection in summer, contribute to spring and summer droughts, respectively. A sustained, record-breaking positive SSTA along the western European coast from the spring to summer excited a wave train, and resulted in the extreme 2017 spring–summer drought. These findings provide valuable insights into the drought mechanism within the interaction zone of circulation systems from different latitudes. Significance Statement The complex interactions between atmospheric circulation patterns at different latitudes have led to an insufficient understanding of the mechanisms causing extreme drought in the border region between the monsoon and nonmonsoon land areas. This study aims to investigate the drought mechanisms in the border region from the perspective of moisture tracking. Results indicate a moisture supply deficit from the monsoon region contributes the most (approximately half) to droughts, although the majority of air parcels reaching this region originate from the nonmonsoon region. The weakening of circulation contributes to more than 80% of the moisture supply deficit during droughts, far exceeding the impact of reduced evaporation from the moisture source regions. These findings are conducive to understanding the mechanisms of extreme drought.

Sea surface temperature driven modulation of decadal co-variability in mean and extreme precipitation

This study investigates the role that sea surface temperature (SST) variability plays in modulating the relationship between decadal-scale mean precipitation and monthly-scale extreme precipitation using the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator Earth System model (ACCESS ESM1.5) climate model. The model large ensemble successfully reproduces the observed strong co-variability between monthly mean rainfall and wet extreme rainfall, defined as monthly rainfall totals above the 95th percentile. Removing SST variability in the ACCESS ESM1.5 model significantly weakens the co-variability between mean and wet extremes over most of the globe, showing that SSTs play a key role in modulating this co-variability. The study identifies Pacific and Atlantic SST patterns as the main drivers of the decadal scale co-variability in mean and extreme wet precipitation. On the other hand, observations and model results show that co-variability between mean and dry extremes is generally weaker than for wet extremes, with highly regional signals. Model experiments also show that SST variability plays a weaker role in modulating the co-variability between the mean precipitation and dry extremes as compared to wet extremes. These results suggest that stochastic atmospheric variability plays a stronger role in generating dry precipitation extremes compared SST forcing.

Exploring covariabilities of the high-summer subtropical upper-level pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere

The Northern Hemisphere subtropical upper-tropospheric pressure systems, i.e., South Asian high (SAH), mid-Pacific Trough (MPT), and mid-Atlantic Trough (MAT), play key roles in regulating the Eurasian–Pacific–North American climate, but their covariabilities and drivers remain unclear. Here, we reveal two seesaw-like teleconnections between MPT and western SAH (WSAH) and between MPT and MAT during the boreal high summer, respectively, and explore their associations with the tropical Pacific and Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. The MPT-WSAH teleconnection, featured by coherent variations between WSAH and MPT, is coupled with enhanced western Pacific subtropical high and Asian mid-latitude low in the low-level troposphere. In contrast, the MPT-MAT teleconnection features an out-of-phase relationship between MPT and MAT, which is associated with westward expanded western Pacific subtropical high but weakened North Atlantic subtropical high. Both two teleconnections are closely linked to Pacific SST anomalies. However, the former is mainly driven by the hybrid La Niña in the tropical Pacific, where cold SST anomalies spreading eastward since preceding winter. Whereas the latter corresponds to the central Pacific La Niña since late-spring mainly driven by preceding successive SST warming in the tropical North Atlantic. Above conclusions are further confirmed by the simulated results from the numerical experiments, which are performed using the US National Center for Atmospheric Research global Community Atmosphere Model version 4.
