The effect of downstream translocation on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt outmigration success.

Trap and transport, the capture and subsequent translocation of fish during the freshwater phase of their migration, is becoming more common as a management intervention. Although the technique can be successful, it is costly and can have unintended effects on the fish being transported. This study investigates whether trap and transport can be used to increase the migration success of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, smolts in naturally flowing rivers. Seaward-migrating S. salar (n = 294) from two UK rivers were tracked using acoustic telemetric techniques. Outmigration success and timing were compared between non-transported (released at the original in-river capture site) and transported (released ca. 23 km downstream of the capture site) individuals. Downstream translocation increased the proportion of fish that successfully migrated to marine waters, and there was no indication that transport reduced post-release survival. The post-release migration speed of transported fish was slower than expected but this was likely a function of their advanced migration timing rather than an inhibition of their capacity to migrate. These results suggest that trap and transport can increase the outmigration success of S. salar smolts, but the earlier river exit dates of transported fish could negatively affect their survival at sea.

Tagger effects in aquatic telemetry: Short‐term and delayed effects of surgery in Atlantic Salmon smolts

AbstractObjectiveAn assumption of biotelemetry is that animal performance is unaffected by the tagging process and tag burden, yet this assumption is often untested or not thoroughly explored. Our objective was to explore how transmitter implantation procedures influenced Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar smolt survival and migratory performance.MethodsWe monitored radio‐tagged smolts, first in the hatchery and then in a river with a receiver array. We assessed survival and in‐river performance in relation to surgeon, surgery duration, processing order, and fish size.ResultMortality was 13.3% during an 8‐day hatchery‐observation period but was higher for fish that were processed by one of two experienced surgeons (25% vs. 2%). Mortality peaked 3 days postsurgery and was higher for smaller fish and fish that were tagged during morning tagging sessions (versus afternoons). The size effect changed over time, being greatest during the first 2 days postsurgery and continuing thereafter at a diminished level. Fish performance once released into a river also differed between surgeons (migration initiation 66% vs. 82%; to‐lake migration success 22% vs. 43%) and, consistent with hatchery observations fish that were tagged in the morning by one surgeon, performed poorly once released.ConclusionWe highlight the immediate and lingering effects of surgical procedures on smolt survival that, if not accounted for, could bias inferences about the study population. Researchers should anticipate tagger effects during study design to ensure potential tagger effects (i.e., surgeon, order tagged, conditions during tagging) are balanced across study groups of interest. Testing for a fixed tagger effect in analyses may not always be adequate because a tagger effect may covary with processing order and fish size and may change over time.

Downstream bypass efficiency of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts in relation to bypass cobble substrate and flow velocity

River connectivity is a major environmental factor affecting fish migration through river systems. Anthropogenic barriers cause substantial delays and mortality to long-migrating diadromous fish, such as salmonids. Downstream bypasses have received little attention over the years and can be constructed in several ways, with bypass acceptance by fish shown to be problematic in many cases. This experiment investigated whether the addition of cobble in the passageway of a surface bypass could facilitate downstream movement of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts. The experiment also determined if the addition of cobble substrate functioned similarly under five varying flow velocities, as this can directly interact with bypass design and impact bypass acceptance. Surface bypasses were constructed in large experimental flumes, into which the smolts were released and monitored for bypass passage using PIT-telemetry through 3-h night-trials. Behavior was scored using two continuously-recording video cameras at the bypass construction. No clear positive effects on passage efficiency could be detected from the addition of cobble substrate in the passageway of the bypass. Based on these results, the addition of cobble substrate in a surface bypass passageway cannot be recommended as a measure to facilitate the downstream passage performance of Atlantic salmon smolts through surface bypasses. With respect to flow velocity, higher velocities within the tested range (0.48–0.75 m ∙ s−1) led to faster passage.

Phytogenics From Sage and Lemon Verbena Promote Growth, Systemic Immunity and Disease Resistance in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

The transcriptomic response of the head kidney, the main lymphohematopoietic tissue of the body, was evaluated in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts fed a functional feed containing a phytogenic rich in verbascoside and triterpenic compounds like ursolic acid. Fish (initial body weight = 55.0 ± 0.1 g) were fed two experimental diets (40% crude protein, 22% crude fat; 21.6 MJ/kg gross energy) that only differed in the phytogenic content (0.1% inclusion). Each diet has six replicates and was tested over a period of 133 days. The tested zootechnical feed additive a medicinal plant leaf extract (MPLE) obtained from sage (Salvia officinalis) and lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora). At the end of the trial, smolts fed the MPLE diet were heavier than their congeners from the control group (271.5 ± 7.9 g vs. 240.2 ± 19.3 g, respectively; P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) values in fish fed the control diet were higher than those in fish fed the MPLE diet (FCRcontrol diet = 1.27 ± 0.08 vs. FCR0.1% MPLE diet = 1.08 ± 0.05; P < 0.05). The immunomodulatory properties of the functional diet were evaluated by means of an in vivo challenge with Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (1 × 107 CFU mL–1). The microarray analysis of head kidney samples from both dietary groups revealed 1,178 differentially expressed genes (802 upregulated and 376 downregulated). Among them, several biological processes related to immunity were identified in fish fed the MPLE diet (i.e., interferon-gamma-mediated signaling pathway, antigen processing and presentation of peptide antigen via MHC class II, autophagy, regulation of i-kappaB kinase/NF-kappaB signaling, and leukocyte activation). Results from the bacterial challenge showed that survival rates were higher in smolts from the MPLE group (90.6 ± 6.4%) in comparison to the control group (60.7 ± 13.5%), confirming the functional benefits of the phytogenic in terms of host’s immunity and disease resistance. Biological processes such as cytoskeleton organization and regulation of cellular protein metabolic process detected in fish fed the MPLE diet supported the metabolic changes related to increased somatic growth promoted. The present findings showed that the inclusion at 0.1% of the tested MPLE obtained from sage and lemon verbena in diets for Atlantic salmon smolts promoted somatic growth, and enhanced their systemic immune response and reduced mortality when fish were challenged with A. salmonicida cumulative, the causative agent of furunculosis in salmonids.

Movement, Survival, and Delays of Atlantic Salmon Smolts in the Piscataquis River, Maine, USA

AbstractMovement, delays, and survival of hatchery Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar smolts were evaluated through the Piscataquis River, a tributary of the Penobscot River in Maine, USA. We explored the effects of the river’s four dams (Guilford, Dover, Browns Mill, and Howland dams) from 2005 to 2019. During this period, the downstream‐most dam (Howland Dam) transitioned from full hydropower generation to seasonal turbine shutdowns and later was decommissioned with the construction of a nature‐like fish bypass in 2016. We estimated survival through open‐river reaches and at each dam using acoustic telemetry (n = 1,611). Dams decreased survival, with per‐river‐kilometer (rkm) apparent survival averages of 0.972, 0.951, and 0.990 for Guilford, Dover, and Browns Mill dams compared to a per‐rkm survival of 0.999 for open‐river reaches. Turbine shutdowns increased survival at Howland Dam (to around 0.95), which was further increased by the nature‐like fish bypass (0.99). We used radiotelemetry in 2019 (n = 75) and demonstrated that approximately one‐third of the fish used the bypass, while the remaining fish used alternative routes. Smolts successfully passing the three upstream dams had lower apparent survival through Howland Dam than smolts that were released upstream of Howland Dam. Although smolts passing Browns Mill Dam had high survival, the dam caused extended delays, with median delay times surpassing 48 h in most years. Most of the delays caused by Browns Mill Dam occurred after fish had passed the dam and may indicate a sublethal effect of passage. Overall, while survival through Howland Dam has improved, passage and delays at the three upstream dams in aggregate represent a critical impediment to the effective use of the high‐quality spawning habitat found upstream.

Quantifying the effects of post-surgery recovery time on the migration dynamics and survival rates in the wild of acoustically tagged Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar smolts

BackgroundThe experimental effects of surgically implanting fish with acoustic transmitters are likely to have negative effects on survival and behaviour. Measuring the extent of these negative effects is important if we wish to extrapolate inferences from tagged animals to un-manipulated animals. In this study, we examine the effect of surgery and post-tagging recovery time on the survival and migration rate of acoustically tagged wild Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) smolts through freshwater, estuarine and ocean phases of migration. Four treatment groups were used: pre-smolt captured in the fall that overwintered in a hatchery and were tagged either 75 days prior to release (winter hatchery) or within 24 h prior to release (spring hatchery) and smolt captured during the spring smolt run, tagged 24 h prior to release and released during the day (day-released) or night (night-released).ResultsThe spring hatchery treatment group served as a reference treatment group such that recovery time (comparison to winter hatchery treatment) and hatchery effects (comparison to day-released and night-released treatments) could both be discerned. The hatchery effect increased migration rate, whereas short recovery times and captivity in a hatchery negatively affected survival. These effects were most pronounced within the first 5 days and/or 48 km downstream post-release, however, the residual recovery time effects appeared to persist during the transition from the estuary into salt water.ConclusionsEven with smolts originating from the wild and spending relatively little time within the hatchery environment, post-release survival was still negatively affected. Migration speed was faster for hatchery smolts, but is likely only due to their larger size. Recovery time effects were most prominent during the initial migration period in freshwater and again in the transition from the estuary to saltwater which may be due to added stress during these transitional zones. As surgery-related bias will likely never be completely removed from telemetry studies, it is important to quantify and account for these effects in situ when making inferences on the un-manipulated component of the population.

No environmental effect on vaccine-induced reduced growth in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts

Oil-adjuvanted vaccines reduce long-term growth in farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, possibly via an increase in metabolic rate due to the energetic demands of the immune system. We tested this hypothesis by comparing sham-vaccinated to vaccinated smolts (total n = 2096, ca. 80 g) under different scenarios of water temperature (12 vs. 17°C, n = 1048 per temperature) and oxygen (O2) saturation (60, 70, 80, and 100%, n = 524 per O2 saturation level) in order to manipulate metabolic rate and O2 availability. We expected a more severe vaccination effect under conditions of high water temperature and low O2 saturation. Groups were kept in duplicate tanks under controlled temperature and hypoxia conditions for 7 wk post-vaccination before being transferred to uncontrolled common-garden natural conditions for 5 mo in a sea-cage. Body mass and length were recorded at the initiation and end of the controlled and uncontrolled environmental conditions. Vaccination and low O2 saturation at 17°C significantly reduced body mass (13 and 3% through vaccination and 9 and 20% through 60% O2 saturation at the end of the tank and sea-cage periods, respectively). However, there was no interaction between vaccination, temperature, and O2 saturation at the end of the tank or sea-cage period, lending no support to our hypothesis. A secondary observation was that emaciated ‘loser’ fish were mainly associated with the 17°C and low (mainly 60%) O2 saturation treatment. In conclusion, although vaccination led to a reduction in body mass, this effect was not influenced by environmental conditions expected to alter metabolic rate.

Effects of ocean acidification on salinity tolerance and seawater growth of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts.

Human activity has resulted in increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ), which will result in reduced pH and higher levels of CO2 in the ocean, a process known as ocean acidification. Understanding the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on fishes will be important to predicting and mitigating its consequences. Anadromous species such as salmonids may be especially at risk because of their rapid movements between fresh water and seawater, which could minimize their ability to acclimate. In the present study, we examine the effect of future OA on the salinity tolerance and early seawater growth of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts. Exposure to 610 and 1010 μatm CO2 did not alter salinity tolerance but did result in slightly lower plasma chloride levels in smolts exposed to seawater compared with controls (390 μatm). Gill Na+ -K+ -ATPase activity, plasma cortisol, glucose and haematocrit after seawater exposure were not altered by elevated CO2 . Growth rate in the first 2 weeks of seawater exposure was greater at 1010 μatm CO2 than under control conditions. This study of the effects of OA on S. salar during the transition from fresh water to seawater indicates that elevated CO2 is not likely to affect osmoregulation negatively and may improve early growth in seawater.

The effects of a small hydropower scheme on the migratory behaviour of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts

The potential effects of a hydropower scheme on the migratory behaviour of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts was studied on the River Frome, southern England. The potential delay to migration at the intake of the hydropower scheme was assessed, together with the effects of passage through the turbine on the temporal and spatial migration of the fish in the river and estuary. The migratory behaviour of the emigrating S. salar smolts was monitored using miniature acoustic transmitters and an array of acoustic receivers positioned at the hydropower scheme and in the river and estuary. The majority of the smolts bypassed the hydropower scheme with only 8.1% of the fish moving downstream through the turbine. Movement was nocturnal and occurred during elevated river flows. There was no apparent delay at the turbine intake or at the adjacent weir. The subsequent migration of all smolts through the estuary of the River Frome occurred during both day and night and there was a distinct ebb-tide migration through the estuary and into the coastal zone. There was no difference in the rate of migration between smolts that moved through the turbine or over the weir. The detection of smolts during both the freshwater migration and the transition from the freshwater to the marine environments was high (91.8 and 73.3%, respectively). A laboratory investigation on the de-scaling of smolts indicated that removal of 1, 5 and 10% of scales had no significant effect on saltwater survival or the measured physiological parameters (gill Na+ -K+ -ATPase activity, plasma osmolality and chloride concentrations). Smolt passage through the turbine was assessed and resulted in either no damage to the integument or scale loss or between 20 and 80% of total body area of recaptured smolts. It is estimated that 1.53% of the smolt population would suffer significant damage after passage through the turbine. The implications of the hydropower scheme on the population of salmon in the River Frome are discussed.

Timing of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt migration predicts successful passage through a reservoir.

Around 30% of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts successfully survived passage through Loch Meig, a reservoir in the north of Scotland, en route to the sea. However, this survival rate was in turn dependent on the timing of migration, with the earliest migrants in the spring having the best chance of survival. This could have implication for fisheries management, since the estimation of smolt downstream survival may be influenced by which time period of the smolt run is analysed.

Comparison of damage to live v. euthanized Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts from passage through an Archimedean screw turbine.

This study assessed the usefulness of passing euthanized Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts through an Archimedean screw turbine to test for external damage, as compared with live, actively swimming smolts. Scale loss was the only observed effect. Severe scale loss was 5·9 times more prevalent in euthanized turbine-passed fish (45%) than the live fish (7·6%). Additionally, distinctive patterns of scale loss, consistent with grinding between the turbine helices and housing trough, were observed in 35% of euthanized turbine-passed smolts. This distinctive pattern of scale loss was not seen in live turbine-passed smolts, nor in control groups (live and euthanized smolts released downstream of the turbine), which suggests that the altered behaviour of dead fish in turbine flows generates biased injury outcomes.

Effects of individual variation in length, condition and run‐time on return rates of wild‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts

Groups of wild-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts were captured during their seaward migration on a tributary of the River Conon, Scotland, U.K., from 1999 to 2014 and tagged with passive integrated transponders (PIT). Fish that subsequently returned to the river after growing at sea were recorded automatically by a PIT-detector in a fish pass. Return rate was related directly to length and condition and inversely to day of the year that the smolt was tagged. Over years, as the study progressed, there was a significant increase in the proportion of smolts returning after two or more years at sea and no trend in returns of salmon having spent one winter at sea. There was no trend in the date of return of salmon across the study period. Fish that had spent more winters at sea returned earlier in the year.

Is bigger really better? Towards improved models for testing how Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt size affects marine survival.

A general framework is presented that should enhance our understanding of how intrinsic factors, such as body size, and extrinsic factors, such as climate, affect the dynamics and demographics of fish populations. Effects of intrinsic factors, notably studies relating juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar body size to their probability to return as an adult, are often context-dependent and anecdotal, due to data constraints. By merit of its flexible specification, this framework should admit datasets with a range of situation-specific nuances, collected using different approaches, and thereby deliver more general and robust findings for more effective population management.

Manipulation of the energetic state of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar juveniles and the effect on migration speed.

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts were produced with similar energetic states as wild S. salar and the effect of low energetic state on smolt migration was tested. The total energetic state of the fish (body lipids and proteins) in the spring was correlated with Fulton's condition factor (K). Fish at a low energetic state swam slower but migrated further than fish at a higher energetic state when tested in two experimental streams. During a period of starvation throughout the winter and spring, fish conserved their body-lipid reserves at 1·5% by using more protein as an energy source and the metabolic shift occurred between 3·5 and 1·5% body lipids. An energetic state of approximately 3·5kJ g-1 (K ≈ 0·65) appeared to be the critical limit for survival.

Downstream Migration and Multiple Dam Passage by Atlantic Salmon Smolts

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate behavior and survival of radio‐tagged wild and hatchery‐reared landlocked Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar smolts as they migrated past three hydropower dams equipped with fish bypass solutions in the Winooski River, Vermont. Among hatchery‐reared smolts, those released early were more likely to initiate migration and did so after less delay than those released late. Once migration was initiated, however, the late‐released hatchery smolts migrated at greater speeds. Throughout the river system, hatchery‐reared fish performed similarly to wild fish. Dam passage rates varied between the three dams and was highest at the dam where unusually high spill levels occurred throughout the study period. Of the 50 fish that did migrate downstream, only 10% managed to reach the lake. Migration success was low despite the presence of bypass solutions, underscoring the need for evaluations of remedial measures; simply constructing a fishway is not synonymous with providing fish passage.Received July 8, 2016; accepted April 29, 2017 Published online June 30, 2017

Interaction between migration behaviour and estuarine mortality in cultivated Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts.

Migration behaviour and estuarine mortality of cultivated Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts in a 16 km long estuary were studied using two methods: (1) acoustic telemetry and (2) group tagging in combination with trap nets. Progression rates of surviving individuals through the estuary were relatively slow using both methods [0·38 LT (total length) s-1 v. 0·25 LT s-1 ]. In 2012, the progression rate was slow from the river to the estuary (0·55 LT s-1 ) and the first part of the estuary (0·31 LT s-1 ), but increased thereafter (1·45-2·21 LT s-1 ). In 2013, the progression rate was fast from the river to the estuary (4·31 LT s-1 ) but was slower thereafter (0·18-0·91 LT s-1 ). Survival to the fjord was higher in 2012 (47%) compared to 2013 (6%). Fast moving individuals were more likely to migrate successfully through the estuary compared to slower moving individuals. Adult recapture of coded-wire-tagged S. salar was generally low (0·00-0·04%). Mortality hot spots were related to topographically distinct areas such as the river outlet (in 2012) or the sill separating the estuary and the fjord (in 2013). At the sill, an aggregation of cod Gadus morhua predating on cultivated smolts was identified. The results indicate that slow progression rates through the estuary decreases the likelihood of smolts being detected outside the estuary. The highly stochastic and site-specific mortality patterns observed in this study highlight the complexity in extrapolating mortality patterns of single release groups to the entire smolt run of wild S. salar.

Transcriptional effects of metal-rich acid drainage water from the abandoned Løkken Mine on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt

ABSTRACTRunoff of metals represents one of the major environmental challenges related to historic and ongoing mining activity. In this study, transcriptomics (direct RNA sequencing [RNA-seq] and reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction [RT-qPCR]) was used to predict toxicity of metal-rich acid mine drainage (AMD) water collected in the abandoned copper (Cu) mine called Løkken Mine on Atlantic salmon liver and kidney, the main target organs of Cu-induced toxicity in fish. Smolts were exposed to control and diluted AMD water, which contains a mixture of metals but is especially enriched with Cu, at 4 concentrations in freshwater (FW) for 96 h, and then were transferred to and kept in seawater (SW) for another 24 h. Significant accumulation of Cu was observed in the gills, but not liver and kidney tissues, after 96 h of exposure. Short-term exposure to metal-rich ADM (high exposure group) significantly upregulated 3201 transcripts and downregulated 3782 transcripts in liver. The strongest effect attributed to exposure was observed on the KEGG pathway “protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum,” followed by “steroid biosynthesis.” Gene ontology (GO) analysis suggested that exposure predominantly affected “protein folding,” possibly by disrupting disulfide bonds as a result of endoplasmic-reticulum-generated stress, and “sterol biosynthetic processes.” Transfer to uncontaminated SW for 24 h amended the transcription of several genes, suggesting a transient effect of treatment on some mechanisms. In conclusion, the data show that trace metals in AMD from abandoned pyrite mines might disturb molecular mechanisms linked to protein folding in Atlantic salmon smolt endoplasmic reticulum.

The influence of sluice gate operation on the migratory behaviour of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (L.) smolts

ABSTRACTNumerous studies have examined the effects of high-head dams on salmonid smolt migration, but few have examined smolt behaviour at sluices managed to regulate water levels. We quantified passage success and time to passage of wild and hatchery origin juvenile (smolt) Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) migration in relation to sluice operation (for water level and flood risk management) at Bala sluices on the upper River Dee, North Wales, including the occurrence of flow-reversal conditions from the Dee to Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala) immediately upstream. Ninety four smolts (67 wild, 27 hatchery origin) were caught, acoustic tagged, released at the capture site and tracked with a fixed receiver array in April to May 2015. Of the tagged fish, 91.5% successfully reached and passed the sluice gates. Of the tracked smolts that reached the sluices, 6.6% failed to successfully migrate downstream through the sluices and 3.2% took over 4 days to pass. There was no significant difference in travel speed, nor the proportion successfully passing, between wild and hatchery reared fish. Smolts migrated quicker at higher flows. Smolts travelled at lower speeds through the sluices than the preceding section from which they originated, suggesting that migration may have been delayed by the sluice gates. Smolts passed through the sluice reach more quickly with higher discharge. Specifically, smolts moved quicker through the sluice reach when the aperture of the gate nearest the outside bend and thalweg increased, but the heights of the other gates did not significantly affect smolt speed past the structure. Flow reversal episodes occurred only by day, whereas more smolt activity occurred by night (66.5% between dusk and dawn); under these conditions we found little evidence for loss of fish to the lake (three fish [3.2%] visited the lake and did not pass the sluices, but were last detected above the sluices), or contribution to delayed passage, as a result of flow reversal. It is concluded that at sites operating undershot sluices, where smolts migrate, upper water column orientated migration routes should be maximized where the thalweg hits the structure as this is likely to be the main route of transit adopted by smolts.

Does size matter? A test of size-specific mortality in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts tagged with acoustic transmitters.

Mortality rates of wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts implanted with acoustic transmitters were assessed to determine if mortality was size dependent. The routinely accepted, but widely debated, '2% transmitter mass: body mass' rule in biotelemetry was tested by extending the transmitter burden up to 12·7% of body mass in small [mean fork length (LF ) 138·3 mm, range 115-168 mm] downstream migrating S. salar smolts. Over the short timescale of emigration (range 11·9-44·5 days) through the lower river and estuary, mortality was not related to S. salar size, nor was a relationship found between mortality probability and transmitter mass: body mass or transmitter length: LF ratios. This study provides further evidence that smolt migration studies can deviate from the '2% rule' of thumb, to more appropriate study-specific measures, which enables the use of fishes representative of the body size in natural populations without undue effects.
